ISB Class of 2014 aspirants.

I have a few queries as a reapplicant for this year:
1. Do the essay topics remain the same (as put forward by Mustang)?
2. For achievements essays , the acheivements are to be changes or can one keep the same instances?
3. For the goal essay , with all probability it would the same. Changing goal in 6 months does not bode well. However, can one keep the essay ditto same as in the last year?
4. Same query for the essay-3 : additional info. May be there can be some addition or subtraction ,but it the essay remains 90% same will it affect?
5. Do the adcom revisit pervious year's essays for a reapplicant? Or do they assess with the current year's essays.
6. Essays for reapplicat - what changes from last application. In fact in six months what change can be ushered in the profile? (in this case feedback from AdCom is important I beleieve).

Reapplicants, please throw some lights..
@akb , aritro , can you please check with our fellow reapplicant puys in CO 2013 threads as well in case folks miss to visit this thread...

I will try to take a shot at this one,

1. In most certainty "yes"

2. The achievements can change. Well in my case, I provided a personal and a professional achievement. Now I have already laid down my plan for a new personal achievement. Professional, will depend in the future at the time of app submission. An achievement is a one that you define as an achievement and not what others define as achievement. So you have to decide yourself.

3. I would suggest not to keep the same essay as last year. Maybe the words change but the intention will be the same. If you copy the essay ditto, then ISB might get a feeling that someone is lazy. And yes, changing goals in 6 months does not happen unless something really interesting happens in one's life.

4. I would request you to wait for the feedback. Depending on the information provided in that you can decide on this later.

5. Adcom will have access to every piece of information that you provided to ISB in your lifetime. Be assured that they will have last years esays, recos and ur application form with them while evaluating this CO2014 application

6. Absolutely, feedback from adcom is one of the most important things as of now. Also by now you must already have an idea what went wrong. So try to build up on that. That should be you content in the reapplicants essay along with feedback improvement content
First, the essays do not change. But for the CO2013, it made the 3rd essay mandatory which was not the case a year before that. Also since we become re-applicants, we have to write one more essay (reapplicant essay). And that makes 4 essays to write.

Secondly, Believe me, ISB is one of the most friendliest reapplicant Bschool. Many disadvantages if u do change things on your profile. At the same time it can be a dual edged sword if no drastic improvements.

Finally, I was thinking the same and this led me to think if I should apply to R2 for which i will have 9 months to fill in the gaps in my profile (i haven't decided yet). The best thing will be to seek a feedback asap. You already have sought one, so I would request all other reapplicants to request one ASAP. That should be the basis of your gameplan. What to do in the next 6 or 9 months. No point thinking over it now until we get our feedback.

Whatever you do , applying in R1 will be wiser I feel..

U absolutely Right ... R1 is any day more advisable .... count me in for the retake as well .... My 680 got me a ding w/o an interview.

But i am not very sure of how kind is ISB to reapplicants especially if its just the GMAT score that shows an improvement. Essays too should be more refined this time around as the this :banghead: process makes u a lot wiser .

Hi, how to ask ISB for the feedback on my app??
Should I reply to the regret mail itself? or something will come up on portal??

Need to know where things went wrong!!

HI Guys

Below is my profile till now.

Gmat: 710
10th: 84.8 %
12th: 81.7%
graduation: 77.8%

work ex till now ( i mean till may-june 2012 when i wish to apply ): 3 years in telecom sector

excellent extracurricular activities.

i want to know 2 things:

1.) should i wait till R2 admit so that my work ex will be more
2.) my graduation college is Amity University so will that make a difference. i mean whether College name does make a difference in selection.

1. You apply when you are ready. R1 or R2 does not make a difference. If you feel you have lots to achieve in terms of ECs or professional stuff. Even I am contemplating on that (R1 vs R2). You need to have that inner calling that you are ready.

2. Many of us here are from one of the top notch colleges of India. It will really have no effect if you do not pack the punch in ur app along with it. so chillax πŸ˜ƒ
ANyone planning to re-take the GMAT?

The 700+ club.. let me know of the good books that can be referred to..
Assuming
1. I can devote 2 hours per day and 3+ on weekends.. and
2. Want to give the exam before June and
3. Am gud in QA (49).. (Mock scores were always in this range..47-49)
am average in Verbal (31).. (Although my English is good, I still don't know how I got 31.. In the mocks I would in the 37 and 40 range) In the exam,I started the section 5 mins late bcoz I was late to get back from my break. :banghead:
4. I am really not happy with the Manhattan/Kaplan/Princeton mocks.. Which are the good mocks to give..??

FINALLYYY,, how do you suggest that I keep my focus in the 4 hour marathon?and what the hell to eat/drink during breaks?

All suggestions welcome.

1.Mock Test - Try Knewton. It is good and scoring is close to GMAT Prep.
Kaplan is on the tougher side. But if you canmanage 620-650 in Kaplan , I believe that can be 730-740 in GMAT. GMATPrep is always there.

2.For focussing 4 hours : Try doing RC for 4 hours at a stretch. It is difficult to concentrate in RC back to back. So if you practice RC with 4-hr sessions that will help you build the mental toughness.
You can practice a few LSAT RC papers..here the passages are longer , it needs more concentration and focus.

3.And pal...dont be 5 min. late for the verbal section....5 min. in verbal is too precious yar...:wow:

Hope this helps..
Few + - Good acads, excellent EC - How much excellent - do you have leadership skills in that? What about professional leadership?

Few - = Not so good GMAT (I mean with IT/telecom 710 is not that great).

Do not wait for R2 - go for kill in R1.
College matters if it is IIT - otherwise everything is same.

In my hubmle opnion, I don't agree with your last point, it's a fierce competition at these top B-Schools, so every single point counts.... So if you are coming from IIT / NIT / BIT or any other college, try to highlight positives, because at Universities (abroad), they do look at your college either IIT or NIT or BIT etc......And, if westerners are wary of such facts then, I'm sure Indian B-Schools would have more info to evaluate about undergrad Engg / Commerce school reputation....

And in the end till the time, there is an official disclosure from ISB or any of these B-schools tht only 2 categories exist "IITs & Rest" then I suppose your guess is as good as mine....

Cheers

Thanks WWNN
Only thing that could have made me happy was to not be in a position of asking for the feedback!
Will shoot a mail at them regarding this and hopefully, shoot a much improved app next time

hi everyone,

well, got the rejection mail yesterday ,finally coming to terms with it
first my profile in brief:

#Work Exp: 5+yrs as Navigating officer in an Italian Shipping Company
#Graduated from premier Nautical Institute in India(Gold Medalist)
Grad Score:78/100
#EC: above average at College Level.was the college captain. No community service.
#GMAT:760

the interview(delhi 6th jan) was short and sweet, lasting 10-12 min with very standard questions.

I'am not very sure what changes I can bring in my profile. Now I'am eagerly looking forward to get a feedback from ISB as to where I went wrong.

I gave my GMAT quiet late this year so did'nt applied to any other college. This year I sure will.Meanwhile plan to go back on ship and make some quick bucks

congrats to all admits specially those who still are willing to help us by contributing to this thread. u guys rock!!!!!!!!

This is a thread for ISB 2014 aspirants πŸ˜ƒ I'm sure there'll be other forums/threads better suited for school selection type of queries.

As far as your profile is concerned, it all looks in place. Shoot for a 720 or higher in gmat and execute well on the essays and recos and you will present a solid case.

Plz evaluate my profile . I am planning to appear for GMAT this year.

Xth 84.8%
X11th 88.00
Grads(engineer) 7.93/10
Work ex- 2 years 2 month as of now with reputed IT firm(working for investment banks as clients
Good Extracurriculars

International internship

Please help. Also any other college that I can apply to within India or Asia. And all the best to everyone

And also when u apply work ex is counted till which month?

In my last app., I had highlighted that I would like to switch to FINANCE from IT..
Reason. I love the stock market (made some money in derivates and shares, helped others make money too) and I had started an Investment bank on paper with 2-3 investors and I dream to open an IB myself where an auto driver and a millionaire could invest.!!:wow:

After I submitted my app,and after talking to a few matured heads in PG, I realized that their was no need for me to harp about my interest in Finance.!:banghead:
I have realized that I could have easily sold the IT consulting idea to ISB.

Should I continue with my dream finance idea in the re-application considering they would have access to my previous essays.

All suggestions welcome.

u shud ask this qn. to VK Menon (there is a thread whr he actively answers queries),- "Do u read the previous attempts' essays while assessing a candidate??"

Its a very valid and pressing point that u hav raised

and Whitenoise, just wanted to correct u, essays do change everyyear, though its always about "YOU"

Copy pasted the question in bold on Mr. VK Menon's thread. Awaiting response.

hi puys, applied to ISB for the first time and got a reject, still coming to terms with it,not so easy when you get a reject with a 700+ class size and 740 on GMAT
my tryst with the elusive MBA is still on,earlier it was CAT and now GMAT, could never manage a ninety niner in CAT,but with 740 on GMAT(50 Q,41 V,5.5) on first attempt i thought i pretty much nailed it this time, but apparently there are a few chinks in the armour left, so will be starting all over again
here goes my profile
IT- 5.5 yrs in ADM with TCS,1yr US stint, good career graph, currently a project lead
12th- 93.7 %
BE - 75.6 % (have a bad feeling that all the fun i had in undergrad is coming back to haunt me now)
EC- nothing outstanding post high school
spent decent time on essays, managed recos from direct managers as well
had a decent i/v interview at isb, hyd.none of the standard questions were asked, was asked about future of e-commerce in india, was very happy to show all my years of business world, business today acquired knowledge, then there was a question about how wud u differentiate urself frm the rest of TCS junta, thought did well on that as well(may be i'm assuming so)
here i committed a faux paus, didnt wear a suit to the interview,i didnt know honestly, thought it wud look like i'm trying hard to impress, but in retrospect it was a mistake if it did matter

so my post match analysis tells me that the EC part did me bad, overall appl was lacking a standout point. so this year its gonna be EC and some fireworks at work, nothing else will do,there is only so much u can do in 6 months

still got XLRI i/v and hopefully NUS i/v coming up,badly want to finish this MBA hunt this year, god willing or as they say inshallah

saw a lot of puys talking about feed back from ISB,how do you get that? anyone?

feeling much better after a sad day yesterday, game on again
-cheers

EC- not very substantial i wud say

Dude.. We are into the 8th page already.. marketing this thread would not be required I guess

My Profile:
Area Manager - ICICI Prudential LIC Ltd
Work Ex - 96 months (Sales and Marketing)
Rapid Career Growth
Decent ECs
Dinged without interview

I will definitely ask for a feedback although I know what the deal breaker was. GMAT - 600 ( Appeared for GMAT as late as 25th November and thus did not have the opportunity to improve on my score )

Cheers
