ISB Class of 2014 aspirants.

Hi,
Could you tell us about the video that needs to be uploaded. What ad coms are looking for in this video from applicants.

Hey folks, I'm a newbie on this website. Like many of you, I too will be applying to ISB this year and would like to connect with the members of this forum.

Brief Infro:

Education:
10th: 86% (2003) - CBSE
12th: 77% (2005) - CBSE
Undergrad (2009): From a top 10 university in US; majored in Economics

Work-ex:
Worked in the investment management side of an investment bank in US.
Currently working as an equity research analyst in Mumbai.
(Both jobs in front office)

GMAT: 700 (Shall be retaking it in Sept.)

I've met a couple of ISB's Ad-Com reps and they've clarified pretty much every query that I had, so feel free to shoot any questions.

Anyway, just wanted to drop by and say hello to the forum members. Good luck to all!

Hey just wanted to know when should I register if I am aiming for R2?

Hello, Generally one mentions only the last held designation in each organization. Say you worked in 2 organizations, so there should be 2 entries.

However if you think that your different roles were quite significant in the same organization, then please go ahead and create another entry. This will help adcom understand your work experience in a better way.

I was mentioned this when I called them with the same query last year. However I stuck to only one entry per organization. (In my case it was only 1 entry overall)
Hi,

Thanks for the help.. can you suggest me some good GMAT mock test series which I can take up to evaluate my preparation level? Thanks.

Adding to what was earlier mentioned my recommendation would be

a) Give one mock test (GMAT prep software) without any prep whatsoever.
b) Start preparing in different sections.
c) Maybe after a month of preparation start giving MGMAT mock tests with a gap of 7-10 days each.
d) By the time you finish these tests, you will be done with 2 months of prep.
e) After giving the first 3 MGMAT tests if you feel that you need more prep, increase the gap of test to around 2 weeks.
f) Finally give the second mock test (GMAT prep software) few days before the actual GMAT date.

You can tweak the above as per your choice.

Did any one get feedback from ISB? I have asked for it and still waiting to hear on same.

Hi Gaurav,
I had my feedback with ISB adcom...they gave me date n time n i called that lady on that day..it was on 4th and for 15 mins...

I guess they started providing feedback to those who could not make it to ISB post interview. So it might take some time before one, who is rejected without interview, gets feedback .

Registration doesn't mean that you will apply in R1 πŸ˜ƒ Register it whenever you like (definitely before the deadline), even now.

If your intent was to ask about submission, then you can do it even the last day of R2. Take your time to have the best app. Do not hurry on it just because you want to be one of the first to apply in R2. If they like your app then you will get called no matter when you apply πŸ˜ƒ

hi heepstones,

Your profile appears to be good enough to apply with the same GMAT.. I would suggest to save time and effort in reapplying for GMAT to focus on your application, especially essays.

All the best!

Hey guys, ive just created a pagal guy account, so please excuse me if i am posting in the wrong place!

I am considering applying to ISB for the batch of 2013(i guess it is a little too late to be 'considering' now!)

Wanted your views on certain aspects. I graduated with a BMS degree in April 2010. I have been working with KPMG in the M&A; tax team since June 2010 now. I also appeared for the CFA level 2 examination this June. I like the course curriculum and am looking at making a career that involves transaction / deal structuring, investment analysis - basically am open to I-banking, PE related profiles, involving a great deal of analysis, working with numbers, and financial management concepts

My objective behind wanting to pursue a MBA is to break-through to the kind of roles iv described above. However, I was going through the profiles of ISB guys, and i have some concerns:

  1. Average work-ex of the batch- 5 years
  2. a great deal of placements centre arund consulting, sales and marketing and IT
  3. Recruiters seek candidates for mid-management roles
Considering the abovr aspects, i am unsure as to ISB being the right platform for me to achieve my career goals. Moreover, i am wondering if it is too late to start preparing for GMAT now, considering i will be working and also planning on CAT this year to keep my options open as far as MBA is concerned.

Lastly, even if i manage to break-through to ISB, considering my relatively lesser work ex vis-a-vis the average work ex of the batch, i would really lack leverage so as far as the placements are concerned!!

Am pretty confused, request your views.

Thanks a lot in advance πŸ˜ƒ

Hi PriyankaBajaj89,

I would suggest the following:
1) Reach out to the admissions team via the "Connect to Student" link on the ISB PGP website and request to be connected to a current student with a similar background. This should provide you with relevant perspective.
2) Don't worry about the work-ex part for getting an ISB admit. If your application is strong enough in terms of the value you bring to ISB, you will be shortlisted with the current work-ex.
3) Quality and quantity of Finance related placements are a function of the market as well so your observations on the placement trends, while accurate, are not necessarily traceable only to the school. Not sure but perhaps Finance placement trends may be similar across schools at the moment? If not, definitely do your due diligence and consider other schools that you feel will be the right platform.
4) I am not sure it is correct to say that recruiters seek candidates primarily for mid-management roles. There are a variety of roles on offer. What should interest you is whether the roles you would like post MBA are being offered.
5) Your current industry contacts may sometimes be a better bet to source job roles. Irrespective of the school you join, you should be willing to leverage those contacts instead of relying solely on the school's placement body. This is perhaps more relevant given Finance recruitment trends in IB, etc..

Lastly, unless you want to join a course midway, you might want to consider applying for Class of 2014 and not 2013.. Co2013 is already underway since April mid πŸ˜ƒ

2013 Batch is already started and they are in school. The next available batch is 2014

Hi Guys,
This is my very first post on pg though ive been a mute spectator for nearly three years now. I am considering applying to ISB class of 2014. Here are a few details of my profile:
X th: 90%
XII th:93 %
Engg: 68%
GMAT: 730

I passed out in 2009 from Mumbai Univ. and working with Hyundai Motors in an R&D; position. I have been going through this and other forums and read a lot about continuity of career aspirations post MBA. I am particularly interested in Strategy consulting since much of my r&d; work involves market research and adoption of new features in in car entertainment.
Im not very sure what are the specializations within Strategy consulting and which of them would be related to my current job. Although consulting in the auto field is an option, i dnt want to restrictmyself to only that.
I would really appreciate any suggestions about how specific i should be abt my career goals in my essay and more info on options within strategy consulting.

thanks, chottasakeel and nitin, i meant batch starting 2013 - i.e. april 2013 - april 2014, for which id have to apply latest by 30 nov 2012! (second round of applications)

Considering it takes about a month to get your application and reference letters in place, i think the best bet would be to appear for gmat by third week of september at the latest. Assuming the slots are available, id appreciate any guidance you'll could provide with regard to the preparation, whether classes are required, what is the best material to use and how to really go about it considering the very limited time ive got in hand (only weekends!!)

Your help is much appreciated. thanks in advance.

I would like to say that you have an interesting profile.

Regarding your query on GMAT prep, since you have only weekends, better start from now. Classes will keep you connected regularly with GMAT prep. If you think you have a strong will to be regular with ur GMAT study, I think you do not need any classes.

Is anyone working on the video resume part? It would be great if all puys from Bangalore could meet sometime next month and discuss strategy. What say?

1.Leadership Potential
2.Diversity

4.Diverse professional experience

Make sure you touch all the points .....
Rate your essays from 0-10 for every parameter... and try to build your story accordingly...

Get to know about your dream coll as much as you can ....
Talk to people....

AND for God's sake dont waste too much time on GMAT ( its just part of your app )

Personally i feel you need not be a super achiever , an intresting story is enough to convince ISB guys.

i hope it helps....

Guys, amazed to see the ferocity, pride and mental strength in you all ! As luck of the draw would have it, you will get to graduate in an even numbered year

Anyway, I just thought I'd pen some thoughts/introspective questions - these are exactly the questions I'd have asked myself if I were bracing up for another attempt:

GMAT
1. Is my GMAT score up to the mark?
2. Do I feel that it'll keep pulling me down and keep making me nervous?
3. Can I find time and strength to bump it up by 30/40 points and enter the 'next' zone?

Acads
1. Can't be improved. So no point in worrying about them. Yayiee!
2. Am I missing some more interesting and useful activities from my past?
3. Is it possible that some of the stuff I have considered NOT important enough to bring forth in my application, really important while some others that I'm happy about, not so useful after all?

Extra Curriculars
1. Is there something going on right in my backyard that I've been ignoring but that can help tremendously with the application and as a talking point?
2. Is this the time to go on an interesting and challenging trip or picking up a hobby that'll serve me not only from an application point of view but also in life in general?
3. Is there an opportunity to amp up the current extra-curriculars that I'm already proud of?

MBA
1. Now I have a good year to further refine the 'God question' - "WHY MBA". How can I use the now-more-experienced-me to improve the answer?
2. At work, is there something I can do that can be used well during the interviews - low effort-high bullshitting-power-giving-work.
3. Have I been underselling my work and experience - is there a way to spice it up - marketing & branding is everything - am I making sure that my words about my work are imparting the same intensity as my heart?

Options
1. Now that I don't have an ISB admit this year to tie me down, are there other options that I should read up and research further? Is a MS in Management or MS in Finance etc. a better option for me?
2. Recommenders - did I choose the best set of people or the most intimate set of people? Was I able to balance credentials with personal knowledge of my work and capabilities? Am I going with hi-fi recommenders who don't know crap about me - helps with ego, but not with app. Should I switch to perhaps a teammate who appreciates my work and knows me well?

.......
So far, that's all I could think of. But I'm certain that some of you may find yourselves asking the same questions and in my opinion, asking the right questions is the only path to getting the right answers.

Good Luck! I'll be around as always to help !

besides working in oil and gas sector i also do have a startup which is working quite well from one year.. Can this be a part of my EC. or only hobbies, Social work can be a part of EC's. Please do reply if u know...

Thnx in advance.
