ISB Class of 2014 aspirants.

Guys,
Have a query - could you please help me out here?

I have 5 yrs of work ex at present - would be 6 by the time I join any institute in 2013....

Now, my work-ex, although in technology is more onto the business side of things - my work never involved coding and all the normal stuff - it was more of mapping financial requirements in technological terms.
Also have worked with international IB brands(on their permanent payrolls) on very niche platforms which are completely into core Investment banking.
Does this make my profile any better than the cliched Indian IT Male?

Hello Puyss..

I'm a reapplicant..I got dinged in the interview last time. I asked the adcom for the feedback. I'm waiting for it.

Well, I'm here to know two specific details

1) How good/bad it is to change the goals essay completely?
2) How good is ISB for global business?

abidshariff

1. Individuals goals keep changing. The adcom understands that. Changing your goal essay is not going to hurt you - especially if your goals have some logical progression and are SMART. Don't fret about changing your goals.

2. Broadly, learning can happen in two ways: In the classroom and outside the classroom. ISB, by virtue of being partnered with Kellogg, Wharton and LBS, has a truly global curriculum. The method of teaching is predominantly case based and as an alum I have studied cases of companies from different corners of the world (America, China, Spain etc. the list goes on). My classmates, while predominantly of Indian origin, worked all over the world. From that perspective you truly get a global business education in-classroom. YOu would understand how business work in the Americas, Europe South East Asia etc among other things. Outside classroom is obviously different - if you are looking to apply the skills you have learned on projects the chances of applying them in a global context are limited. There is the Global Consulting Practicum (where a team comprised of ISB and Wharton students work on a consulting engagement. An e.g. would be an Indian company looking to enter the US or vice versa) and a few global competitions but that's about global exposure you would get. For outside learning a school in the US is better positioned to give more opportunities.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Roshan

Siddharth,

Your profile is surely different from a normal IIM (Indian IT Male) as they are commonly referred to nowadays. Focus on bringing out your unique experiences in your application. You will not be clubbed with a person who has been coding all his life (which is not a bad thing at all) - so do not fret.

Send me a PM if you have any other queries.

Roshan

Hello,
I am a current student at ISB - here to help prospective applicants.

Warm Regards,
Basu.

Adding to what was earlier mentioned my recommendation would be

a) Give one mock test (GMAT prep software) without any prep whatsoever.
b) Start preparing in different sections.
c) Maybe after a month of preparation start giving MGMAT mock tests with a gap of 7-10 days each.
d) By the time you finish these tests, you will be done with 2 months of prep.
e) After giving the first 3 MGMAT tests if you feel that you need more prep, increase the gap of test to around 2 weeks.
f) Finally give the second mock test (GMAT prep software) few days before the actual GMAT date.

You can tweak the above as per your choice.

Hi,

Thanks for the info, by MGMAT do you mean the Manhattan GMAT test series? Do they conduct it in Delhi? :cheerio:

i think they will notice that you have done community service just for the sake of admission in to ISB and thta may have negative impression. just a thought! all the best!

Hi Elbarto,
Admit decisions are made not just on profiles. It evaluates you holistically based on 4 parameters - academics, leadership background, work experience and diversity. Your academics and tenure of work experience is in synch with the ISB averages. You have to use the essays to showcase your diversity and leadership. Essays are an integral part and will be closely read. Since you belong to the IT pool - please expect to face stiff competition. In the next one year, perhaps you could focus on sharpening your uniqueness - be it specific knowledge or skills that would help the classroom discussion and your study group. Adcom would definitely make a note of that.

I would suggest you to work in an NGO only if it means something to you and not for the sake of application - else it might raise questions.

Warm Regards,
Basu.

Hi Basu

How is Mohali campus? Did you visit Hyd campus? I believe you're the first batch of Mohali campus

Hello PS25,
Mohali campus is simply great. Since our batch size is 210 - bonding is pretty strong. Most of us know everybody else in the class and I can very well foresee that this would really help in the future. We are obviously called "Mohali Founders". Academically, we are in the middle of our Term 2 and faculties are fascinating. Career orientation - session to map personal aspirations and take up corresponding LnD - is also in full swing. We do follow the ISB tradition of work hard and play harder - hence partying and sports are in full swing too. Student life is very hectic but at the same time engaging and satisfying. The quads are in the Hyd pattern with married and singles accommodations. We are well integrated with Hyd campus through various joint activities, learning, campus exchange and projects. We had our Aikya Network family meet up last month - and hence we are well immersed in the Mohali community. Many of the families are inviting students and helping them in acclimatising to Chandigarh and Mohali.

Warm Regards,
Basu.

Hi Basu,

Thanks for the reply. When you said "sharpening the uniqueness that will help in the classroom discussions or study groups", could you perhaps provide some example so that I can be clear on this front? It would help me massively.

I have joined the NGO well before I took my GMAT :). Also, being an animal lover, I have been lending a helping hand in some animal shelters for some time now. But animal shelter work counts for nothing, doesn't it?

Hi mate,

I am from Pune. Want to meet up this saturday/sunday?

Hi ,

Anyone going to infosession in bangalore on 24th

Thanks
Abhi

Hello Shravan,
Uniqueness can be the diverse perspective or knowledge that you bring on the table. There can be many instances - say academically knowledge of finance , strong quantitative skills (ie which are not directly related to your field), or exceptional leadership skills thru community service or at work; from diversity perspective - say a unique experience, ex-ccr achievements - things that would make you stand out. Being from IT background - competition would be stiff - hence portraying your uniqueness through your essays would be essential.

The ultimate reason for this is peer learning - in class discussion or thru ELP or study groups. In my study group I have a doctor(who helps us with his healthcare knowledge), a senior IT consultant(he is our data / number cruncher and tells how IT helps in cost control), a manufacturing engg (he brings in knowledge about hi-tech engg and manufacturing industry). Another example, some of us are planning for an ELP with an online-sports retailer. There are people from sports background here in our batch (national level volleyball player, international golf player). Hence, having them the team would definitely help others understand the consumer perspective - say lifetime/tenure of a golf club to understand repeat purchase, or how many golf balls on average a player would need in a month. This diverse knowledge base becomes very imp in case analysis, assignments ELP. etc

Working in community service develops us in a well rounded manner - I am from non-profit background too. Good to hear that you are aligned towards this. It will definitely count - provided you can connect the dots in essays or showcase your learnings and leadership skills.

Hope this helps.

thanks a ton, mate. I am going to work towards this now.

Keep visiting the thread, mate. We need all the help we can get from you guys πŸ˜ƒ

awesome funda basu da!! so guys wassup?

Hi Srinivas,
With a 10 years you would be a member of our Senior Executive club @ ISB. There are separate initiatives by Career Advancement Services dept (CAS) in highlighting the SEC members as they join the mid/senior level management cadre.

You can possible work for Consulting space in Energy or plan to opt for the industry. Regular consulting companies (Mckinsey, Booze, ATK, BCG) recruit for such roles. Among the industry roles in Strategic Planning, Senior Management have been historically offered.

Change in career is also possible - provided you take initiatives in learning / ELP / building a strong case for career switch but you might have to do certain trade offs.

Warm Regards,
Basu.
