ISB Class of 2014 aspirants.

Is there anybody from Pune applyin this year? Please PM

Puys, whats the state of your application as of now? Anyone done any essays?

And video essay, I am not sure what are they going to assess out of it. Should we directly begin with sentence "life to me is..." or some person intro also can be given?

Hey ps25,

I am from Pune but not in Pune at the moment. I am a re-applicant and was dinged last year without an interview. There were a few chinks in my armor most notable of which was my GMAT which was way below the average. I took a gamble considering my profile and unfortunately it did not pay off. So here I am back preparing to appear for the GMAT and working on the application.

I have a few pointers from my last application cycle so will be using them for my essays this time. I am working on adding more point through deeper introspection so that I can bring in a different set of points in my essay this time around. The video sure has a lot of scope of creativity on the topic that can be chosen. I have not thought on it in depth though as of now.

Hi Seniors,

Could you guide us on the award/achievements section. What kind of achievements could be described there.Given the fact that i don't have any national/state level award, can i include things at team/company or school/college level.

Does the tangible benefits e.g., RSU awarded to an employee for good performance can be counted as achievement

Thanks for the help!

Hi Guys,

I'm kindof a newcomer to Pagalguy :)

Can you please lemme know if my profile is good enough to apply for ISB,

BSC Computer Science(First Class)

1) Joined TCS at Campus Placement. Worked there for 3 years a a programmer.
-Six Sigma Certified
-Sun Certified Java Programmer
-Was a member of Fun@Work activities at TCS
-Also was a part of a few CSR activities

2) Worked in JP Morgan India as a programmer for 1 year
-Passed CFA Level 1

Decided to move to Finance( not a sudden decision), so quit JP Morgan

3) Took an Investment Banking Course

4) Currently working in a startup Investment Banking KPO as a senior analyst, since 6 months

GMAT: 730(QA: 50/ VA: 40)

It is a given fact that not everyone is a class will be a national or state award recipient.
You can include team/company awards, but should generally refrain from putting in school awards (unless it is something substantial)
The idea is to demonstrate specific skills/aspects of your personality that were recognized by others.

And yes the good performance award would also be considered.

Hope that helps..

Basu... kudos to you dude.. good to see you take so much time off and help out aspirants.. keep it up πŸ˜ƒ

Good to know that you have started to focus outside work as well!!

All work and no play make Jack a dull boy :splat:

ISB or any other B-School for that matter evaluates applications holistically. If you say that you focused on work all the time, what was the end result of it all?
were you excellent in your work and got promoted out of turn? Got recognition for your efforts that others did not?? If so, then great you have a valid reason for not spending time on other things (not that this is ideal but just valid)

If on the other hand, you did none of these then why should the adcom believe you?? You might just have been lazy!!:wow:

Finally coming to the CSR thing. Everybody thinks its glamorous to talk about giving back to society and stuff like that, but if you are not really sincere and dedicated to the cause, the shallowness will be evident in the interview.
So do not do it,just for the bullet point!!

PS: Do not take it personally, that is just the way a profile is evaluated..

Guys I have very bad extra curicular during my work-ex. I was always more focussed on my work.

However recently I have started engagin myself in CSR activities and extracuricular during schooling are also not that stellar.

Does not having good extra curicular affect my chances at ISB?

Perseverance always rewards... Do keep trying

Just think about it from the interviewer's perspective.
The goal that you have mentioned, would be mentioned by how many of the applicants? If only 1 in 8/10 people get the admit, how will the adcom select that 1 person?

What you have mentioned is your dream for a career, not your aspiration/ambition. :wow:

You say you want to join a Strategy Consulting firm... the first question they will ask is why? what do you knw abt strat consult? what skill do you have that will help you be a successful consultant?
If you have clear ideas and have done your research well you will be in a position to answer these convincingly, else you would just be a dreamer like the vast majority and hence would not get the admit..

:wow:Hope this helps.

Hi,

I am a second time re-applicant. The first time they rejected me, they said that I don't have much experience ( 1 year 10 months), and the second time they rejected me, they said that I am not clear about my goals. Both the times, I was called up for interviews. Before I say anything else, find my profile below:

GMAT- 750 (51 Q, 41 V)
Acads - 8.36 CGPA (IIT)
Work Exp - 3 years 9 months (as of march 2013)
Domain - IT Consulting ( 1 year 7 months with one of the big 4, and then a start up (not mine) )
Extra Curricular - Music (Have won inter-hostel band competitions as the lead singer, rhythm guitarist etc.), Volunteer for Teach for India (for about 4-5 months)

During the feedback, the counselor told me that my essays were fine, but my interview didn't go well as I was not able to explain why I want to do MBA.

So, to be frank, I want to pursue MBA to - learn the "business way" of thinking and to build a life long network of similar minded people. And using this, I want to join a strategy consulting firm initially, and later on, I may chose to start my own venture when I have polished my business skills through years of experience.

Is this goal something non-realistic or is it something for which I don't need an MBA ? Where am I going wrong ?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys,

can someone tell this year essays for ISB ? are they same as last year ?

Hi Seniors,

My goal is clear to land as Operations Manager at Facebook. I have no ifs and buts here. My acads do not support my caliber since I never finished my exams unless they were competitive exams like IIT or GMAT. I owned a dance group for Four Years in engineering, I hit last two balls to the boundary to see my college cricket team winning ( it was tough), I have won a nomination for Short film at International Film Festival , I am working as Operations Team Lead in a technical company. My target is to lead in FB but FB wont allow me unless I have good acads or a degree from a place like ISB.

Guys, can you guide me for this whether the approach is correct or not, coz for the first time I am thinking of end-result which is to land as Operations Manager at Facebook

I'm a reapplicant from the last year (dinged without interview last year). I had asked ISB for feedback. Initially they said they will arrange for a call but today I received an email with their feedback covered in 3 points. Is the norm for feedback such emails or do they generally do the feedback over the phone? Should I be worried that I received feedback over email and that they're not too keen on my re-application which is why the feedback was done over email?

Thanks Nav ! ... Thanks for building confidence. Will call u from ISB next year ! .... till then keep ur Puy profile on ! .... πŸ˜ƒ

i have one peculiar question here. ISB has student intake of around 800 right? Isn't that way too high? Does that affect placement quality?

Given that IIMs have 1 year MBA programs with similar cost and almost same brand but lesser seats (most have less than 100 students per year), is ISB the right choice for people with 7+ years of work-ex.

Anyone who has given some thought on this please comment.

ps 25,

HBS has a class size upward of 900 and it is among the best b-schools you can get. I think a few factors that you may find worth exploring for ISB are:

1. the faculty/student ratio

2. number of students in a core class / elective class

3. your own thoughts about a small class v/s a large one. Some people thrive in a small environment where as some prefer the larger ones. What do you think will be best suited for you?

4. Eventually is the b-school offering the core/ elective courses and other learning opportunities (outside the class) that you want?

5. Another point to consider is that ISB has 2 campuses and about 220 people are at the Mohali campus. So in effect the class size does become smaller.

6. In terms of two many ISBians being out there in the market - well, there are different ways to argue that. You would also have a larger network of alumni, which is another point b-schools like to boast about.

Placements depend a lot on the economy at a given time. From this perspective the class size may not matter all that much- if the economy is robust, people will get good jobs and the other way round.

Since it is the first year for ISB's large batch size, it would be interesting to see their placement figures, when they are out.

Hope that answered some parts of your question.

Not sure about HBS, I am more interested in exploring rather evaluating 1 year MBA courses offered in India

1. i think faculty to student ratio would be less given more number of students per batch/class
2. I will be more comfortable in small class

my question to you as an admission consultant, do you recommend ISB to 7+ years of work-ex over IIM A or IIM B? Given that former has large batch size with varied levels of experience among students whereas later have only experienced candidates with or above 7 years of work-ex.

With weak acads, you'll have a tough time cracking ISB, let alone getting into FB which is a premier recruiter at ISB.

My advice - focus first on getting a great GMAT score + structure your essays well to have a realistic chance for an admit. If you do make it to ISB, be prepared to forget all peace for a year, FB won't even look at the application if your grades are not top-notch. Your batch will probably have 50 IITians, most of them with an academic record that would have made Einstein proud. So please get your priorities right - if you're prepared to go up against this crowd then all the best, otherwise don't kid yourself!

Just my 2 cents - no offence intended!!
