Thanks for replying @[353763:singhsid].
Since you have taken my question utterly serious. I would like to share my acads. I am not sure how good/bad are these but certainly have a depleting trend.

X : 83%
XII : 70.46%
UG : CGPA : 1.68/4 ( The conversion is not linear) but this counts as 53.6% as per university.

Please share your views on this too. I am trying hard for GMAT scores and ISB Essays but I dont wanna kid living in a dream of cracking ISB. I loved your blunt thoughts .. Please pour in more for this query. Thanks
@preferanonymous said: I'm a reapplicant from the last year (dinged without interview last year). I had asked ISB for feedback. Initially they said they will arrange for a call but today I received an email with their feedback covered in 3 points. Is the norm for feedback such emails or do they generally do the feedback over the phone? Should I be worried that I received feedback over email and that they're not too keen on my re-application which is why the feedback was done over email? > >
@[592443:preferanonymous] Normally ISB gives feedback in email format only(in that bullet point format) .It is the first time i have heard that they also give feedback on phone . So don't get worried , email is just fine.
@ps25 said: Not sure about HBS, I am more interested in exploring rather evaluating 1 year MBA courses offered in India1. i think faculty to student ratio would be less given more number of students per batch/class 2. I will be more comfortable in small classmy question to you as an admission consultant, do you recommend ISB to 7+ years of work-ex over IIM A or IIM B? Given that former has large batch size with varied levels of experience among students whereas later have only experienced candidates with or above 7 years of work-ex.

MBA is a lot about learning from peers ( outside the class) . So think you have an option of being with 550 students who have experience ranging from 2 years to 15 years ( Avg. 5 Years) Or u you will go with a small class of 7+ Year experience people. Because if we go with numbers even then people with 6-7+ years of work ex will be far more in ISB than IIMs total strength.

Could someone shed some light on the social enterprise programme that ISB offers? It got me thinking in an entirely different direction. So far I have been looking at programmes that suit my strengths like Marketing or HR as I like to think I have good aptitude, communication skills and people management skills.

However, after learning that ISB offers social enterprise course, I am in a dilemma. It is something I would love to do and passionate about as supposed to the courses above that I can be really good at. Therefore it would be great if someone can help me with the deails about Social enterprise in ISB such as quality of the course (as supposed to US b-schools), any student clubs or activites in ISB pertaining to SE, careers after finishing the course. I tried to get these details on the ISB website but couldn't find them anywhere.

What I am trying to ask is whether there will be recruiters after the completion of the course (sounds unlikely) or should I have to set up my own non profit organisation? in which case I am at a severe disadvantage as I hardly have any financial support to do so.

So the Xth looks good, the XIIth is about manageable but to be honest it's the UG that you really have to worry about. In your case it's absolutely essential to score high in GMAT and I mean well above 700 to prove that you have the capability to handle the academic rigour that the course will demand.

Second - use the essays to explain why your XIIth and UG scores are not good. I will not kid you - you are starting the race from a very disadvantageous position but if you can explain these grades (sports, ECA, any other achievement) then you still have a realistic chance.

Third - acads only have a specific weightage in the overall application. Highlight other achievements and qualities using the essays. Just remember that you will be going up against thousands of other applicants who would have great scores, ECAs and professional achievements. Think hard about what makes you different from these guys (and hope that the ad-com agrees!).
I KNOW that the ad-com would appreciate diversity and to be very honest this is the only realistic shot you have. Spend a lot of time on your essays - unlike the match where you won by hitting two boundaries ;), b-school apps are test matches where the entire application should be painstakingly built in phases and there is no gain from false bravado. There are no points for kidding oneself with the approach that you will come up with killer essays and recommendations over one weekend (trust me - I was a re-applicant, that approach will not work!).

I would really advice you to fight one battle at a time - put FB/Google/whatever out of the picture for the time being, worry about getting an interview call - then worry about cracking the interview and THEN, if you make it to ISB you can start worrying about how to make it to FB. Spending sleepless hours thinking about FB is akin to imagining how will you hit that winning six in the first over itself, there are 100 other things to worry about right now ;)

As I was saying before, if you feel you are up for all these things - then all the best for your application, hope you do well.

@[553250:mustang28] i intend to sit for GMAT next year and hope for ISB 2014 class.. have I missed the bus for that year ? peer learning is important when you have co-operative and knowledgeable peers. Anyway any idea how many students per class?

@ @[353763:singhsid] : I have sent you a PM almost a month back ...Not sure if you missed it or you don't entertain PMs

@[189156:snbasu] Did the prof pull the "Non linear programming is covered in next term in Advanced DMOP" joke? He does it every year, I almost had a heart attack when he said those words ;)

All the best for term 3, in our year when the Corp Fin final was going on, there was a notice outside the exam hall saying: "Please leave your bags here", some traumatized soul came out of the hall and replaced 'bags' with 'pants' ;)

@[565359:sudhir3127], sorry dude, I might have missed your PM, not very regular on PG as you can imagine. And my inbox is a mess after the redesign - looks like every PM I ever sent/received has managed to rise again from the dead ;)
Whats your query? Share it here. I do entertain PMs but I never do profile evaluations (personally, I think they are a waste of time). If your query is a non-profile eval then do let me know - I will surely answer it and other folks here might also benefit by reading the answer.
@ps25 said: peer learning is important when you have co-operative and knowledgeable peers. Anyway any idea how many students per class?

there are alomst 70 students per class

Hopefully this is not profile evaluation and will merit a response.

A background leading to my questions is below:

10th std- 88% 12th std 82% BE (ECE) 74% from non reputed Bangalore based college in 2005

2 years with 3i Infotech in coding (initial) and sales (later) capacity, 6 odd months of job hopping, then a steady almost 3 years with a small IT company in noida in senior managerial sales capacity.

Heres the twist. Entreprenuerial bug bites. Idea chosen as top 70 in India in Economic times power of ideas. Started a Gaming lounge and cafe in Indore, Madhya Pradesh in early late 2010- early 2011, self funded. This year, started a rooftop cafe and multicuisine restaurant in partnership with my father in law plus the original gaming lounge etc. Great brand recogniton, paper coverage etc. I am the Director of Marketing for the Group ventures.

Now the venture is finally getting on its feet and I will be able to take the time out to pursue my own path. Aiming for ISB or other 1 year course in India and Singapore. My justifications for needing the degree both for the venture and for my career are well sorted.

Thanks for reading thus far:

q1. Technically I would have 8 years of experience by Mar-Apr 2013. How well is the entreprenuerial workex recognised? Would i have to produce salary slips coz as directors of a loss making venture last year, we didnt take home much.

q2. I am from a non IT Background ( only 6 months in tech) and the rest in IT sales ( 5 years) and Sales branding and marketing of my own venture for the rest. Is this a good enough diffrentiator. Does the fact that my current sector is Hospitality and Entertainment/ Service bode good overall?

q3. I have a food blog for the past 2 years running which enjoys decent eyeballs. Does this spice up the profile or is it too non academic to be considered. I also head a small group of animal lovers, rescue street pups and blog about that as well.

q4. With 8 years behind me, can I sell a good story ( I have practically hand built my entire company and so am reasonably proficient in all aspects of the management including finance and operations) and get away with a lower GMAT ( I just started but scored a measly 580 in the first test, this should improve in a month ( my CAT 2004 result was 98.3 percentile. weak in quant great in verbal)

Thanks to all for reading . You might literally be saivng lives here!

Hi,

Here are your answers.

Ans 1 . Entrepreneurship & Family Business is well accepted as a professional background at ISB. We do have a lot of entrepreneurs in our class. In lieu of salary slips - ISB accepts IT returns.

Ans 2. I assume you have 5.5 in IT/IT Sales and then 2.5 (+ time till next March 31 another 8 months) in start-up. Yes - this will be a good enough differentiators - but showcase your learning and achievements well.

Ans 3. End of the the day you have to tie it to your story - please think in this line. Has it helped u in your professional life, what are your experiences and learning from this experience that you can bring on the table, any metrics etc

Ans 4. Please do not neglect GMAT. Academics is an important aspect in ISB. Not only during admissions but also during the course - everybody has been very successful - so the competition is cut throat. ISB average GMAT is 710 - which makes admissions very competitive. I would suggest you to improve your score - being in the median 80% zone - ie around 670+ - it would be good for you.

Foot note - : please remember to connect the dots and create a complete application package. The application should be tied down - each components fitting into the bigger story. Say - why the career change - how your long term and short terms goals are aligned - how and what you plan to do at ISB so that you would achieve your long and short goals etc. Please connect the dots well.

Thanks,
Basu.

@[353763:singhsid] - LP and IP was ok and fun. Monte Carlo nearly killed us... and we thought SMMD was tough in Term 1. Few other terms like this - with 95% CI I can tell, I will crack up.

Thanks a lot Basu...especially this late. More questions are lined up.

Can I get my Father in law for the recco... as partners he knows my work best. Also is ISB open to taking the recco in Hindi... His recco in english may not have the same impact.?

Hi,
No relatives are not recommended. And they has to be in English.

Thanks,
Basu.

I think technically it might be allowed to get a reco from your father-in-law but the mere fact that you and him are personally related will drastically reduce the impact of the recommendation. You should really consider other sources for getting a recommendation.

When you nominate someone for a reco, they are just sent a link to an online tool, I don't think there's any option of submitting the recommendation in Hindi (or any other language apart from English for that matter)
