I will be more comfortable in small classmy question to you as an admission consultant, do you recommend ISB to 7+ years of work-ex over IIM A or IIM B? Given that former has large batch size with varied levels of experience among students whereas later have only experienced candidates with or above 7 years of work-ex.
Hi, mention of HBS was just to make a point about large class sizes, I know you are not intending to apply there.
I think you have given the answer yourself- you prefer a small class structure. In this case an IIM MBA may be better suited for you.
A larger class size definitely promises more diversity in all forms (as an example, ISB has 28% women, while IIM A has about 7%, both have around 75% engineers, but their industries of work will vary greatly with larger numbers) . So you may find that your learning experience is completely different on hearing the perspective of a younger student ( say with 3 years of work experience) as opposed to someone with 15 years of experience.
In the end, its hard to look at just stats and decide. You can get the touch and feel by talking to students, alumni, and by visiting.

@sur1989 said: Hello friends,I am a fresher in the race for ISB and need your help.I have completed my B.E. with 69.25% in 2011.My 10th and 12th percentages are 83 % and 73 % respectively.I had participated in a few extra curricular activities during my school and college,Presently, I am working as a Network engineer in Zee networks since April,2012.I have heard that one has to be extra-ordinary in acads , social and extra-curricular activities to be a part of ISB.But till now I don't have major achievement in any of the fields mentioned above. Can you please tell me whether I am eligible for ISB? And if yes, what extra efforts I need to put in so as to get admitted to the most reputed B-school.How can I improve social and extra-curricular account in my profile? And what is the process of admission and application in ISB, till when can I apply?
Eligibility for applying to ISB are only - an undergraduate degree, a valid GMAT score, minimum of 2 years of work exp. I believe you already have those.
Coming to admission decision - they are based on Academics, Leadership Potential, Work Exp and Diversity.
Please take your GMAT diligently - an above average score would take care of your academic potential - that's one obstacle out. ISB average tend to hover around 710 with the 80% of the people in the 680-740 range. We do have people with scores as low as 620 and as high as 780.
Yes - in work you would have to demonstrate the potential to go the extra mile. You might fail - thats pretty fine - but the learnings from the failures are the key.Trying out new things, taking ownership, challenging the equilibrium - are the things that ISB would like to hear about. And hence - not quantity but quality of work experience is valued.
Extra-curriculars are like good to have - they can help you differentiate, stand out - but only extracurricular achievements would not guarantee you an admission.
Lastly - your profile has to be holistic and well rounded - not just academics number cruncher or good verbal skills - but say good team skills, good sense of career path post ISB etc.
Wish you all the best in the admission process - it was fun for me.
Thanks.

Like some social work ....one does not get certificates for any help to society ...even if you work with some organization (like cry etc) no certificate is given to you.
Hi GameIsOn2806,
Please find the answers to your queries.
1. Yes the essay questions are worded the same every application Round for the same year.
Year on year the wordings do change - but essentially Adcom asks the same thing - a perosonality - which may be worded as your accomplishments, a career essay - your career progression, why MBA and what next. Apart from this there is an additional essay - upto you how well you can use the real estate. Please refer to post 1300 of this thread - I have given an essay analysis under Idiots Guide to ISB application.
2. Thats ok - ISB accpets that. But a suggestion - do showcase what you have learnt from them, what you did etc - basically its an opportunity - so please use it well.
Thanks.
Hi all,
Hi Deeksha,
@deeksha1985 said: Hi all,Need your suggestion to make my application better. I am an engineering graduate with 4 years experience primarily in enterprise products and semiconductor industry. I have been talking to few friends in semiconductor industry and it seems that experience of semiconductor can be a problem because I have been in core technology only. Some ISB alums told me that employability can be a issue for such profiles and hence, they are very careful selecting the candidates. So, what else can do to make my case stronger with ISB in the absence of any business experience at all! Would like to have some opinions from people who are especially for such technology background. Thanks in advance,
I am sorry to state this - you perhaps are a bit misinformed over here. First - ISB has no limitations on what your background is - people come form NGOs, armed forces, Healthcare, IT & ITES, start-ups and even Education. So you would not be at any disadvantage because you are from a particular background. Yes -competition is stiff in some areas like IT (because of the sheer number of applicants from that area) - but IT background make up nearly 30 % of the class. Semiconductor and electronics is a special area and hence competition is tad less than IT (reason to smile). In my current class - we do have people from semiconductor background.
Also, it is totally a wrong notion that employbility is a problem with people from your background. We do have companies like Cisco, Cypress Semicondutor, Apple, Phillips, Siemens and similar Electronics / Semiconductor majors coming for recruitment. Please check for recruitment handbook available at www.isb.edu/pgp for detailed list of companies coming for recruitment in this field. Research about the clubs @ ISB that suit your background - we have a club called BTC - Business Technology Club that might be of your interest.
Thirdly - you are not expected to have a business experience prior - thats exactly what you come to ISB for. Ensure that you have good knowledge in your field - your industry - at a strategic, tactical and operational level. That should do.
I do not know any further about your profile to pass detailed inputs. Let me know further if you need any more help.
Thanks.
Hi All, my first post here, and need some help to clear my dilemma. I am an Engineering grad (IIT) with 3 years IT work ex (till date, in a MNC bank). Now, the concerns I have is that I have a two year gap between 12th and the time I joined IIT (well, prepared for JEE, got some 5k rank the first time, so thought I could crack it the second time). Now my concern is that is it absolutely mandatory to explain this gap in the optional Essay ? I mean, I think people generally take a year drop to prepare, and its a non-issue as far as I know. And then, there is so less real estate to work with in the essays, and I want to talk about other stuff .Plus the concern of highlighting this negative aspect which I would rather prefer to sit in the background !

Hey, I think you should go ahead and explain the gap, the instructions clearly talk about explaining any gap in the education. Additionally the gap was for something that helped you achieve big.
2 years is a big gap and you will be asked to explain. I had a gap of 5 months between my graduation and first job and received an email from ISB to explain the small gap.

I have total of 6 years of work ex.. 3.5 in Cisco with lots of leadership responsibilities. Global Manager for Microsoft Enterprise Support Programs (Manage all of Cisco support requirements wrt to MS Components), and royalty. Been part of Negotiations for master Licensing Agreements with Legal teams. Manged reduction of Inventory with Contract Manufacturers. Receiver of Cisco Achievers award. Previous work experience includes application development and presales as Business Analyst. Responsible for setting up operations in both places. I would like to know what gMAT score would be required to get and if my profile would make any difference.
ISB has no minimum GMAT requirement. The mean is around 710 - so would suggest you to maintain that. There are many other aspects to the application - not only GMAT. Do give meticulous attention to to those as well.
Warm Regards,

Hi @[594121:blitzkreigkid],
Unfortunately profile evaluation might not be feasible. On paper your profile looks good - but you have to potray your learnings / what uniqueness in terms of work exp (and hence knowledge) you bring in the class room / study group in you essays. Say for example - negs & licensing, inventory management, ops management - what you can contribute through these learnings. You avg work exp is 6 vs the isb avg of 5.
Thanks,
Basu.

Many thanks for your reply ! The mail you got from ISB asked to explain in the Application form or the essays explicitly. I intend to ask as there is a place in the form as well where you get space to explain any gap in education. Apart from the gap, I think I have good credentials (atleast I hope so :)) in acads (GMAT 740, B.Tech 7.6 CGPA, 12th - 91 %). So would it be ok to use the space in the form instead of the essays ? Or does it warrant a mention in the essays only ?
