Gmat: 620Experience: 3 and a half yearsXII 85%X 91%Profession: Architecture and constructionGot rejected, applied in R1 for 2013. I am an architect and I am planning to re apply for the 2014 section. I am awaiting ISB feedback for the reason on rejection. I have joined JLL now as a project manager, and I think I will be able to get better recommendations now. Amy suggestion if I should give my GMAT again?
Hi,
You need to put extra efforts on application essays and work hard on interviews. I would suggest you to write your GMAT again by June-end and aim for 700+ score as you have an avg. acads. Kindly share ISB β¬β’s feedback once you receive it.
Let me know in case of other queries. You can PM your number to discuss over your profile.
@ivyctor2010 i would be applying for ISB this september..please help me as to what areas to add to my profile.. present profile is
X-79,XII 76, Btech 66 from nit ngp (deptt metallurgy), having 3.5 yrs work ex on date
currently in vizag steel plant (a 3.4 MT and is expanding to 6.1) as junior manager in plant control department which overseas the running of the plant and interacts with all the departments and top management regarding the same.
any breakdown, IR problem or for that matter any issue of coordination within the plant is seen by us(12 executives) in shift by shift basis. All the delays and critical analysis are done here and appraised to the top management. plant level emergencies, MIS reports, presentations to GMs and directors, these are all maintained. shift wise reports are given to them. regarding the leadership qualities in my job, i have to be well prompt all the time as in a running plant breakdowns and emergencies takes place seldom and timely and quick actions can only help through(this has to be properly explained though).
extra curricular are in sports(presently in cricket team of my company and have won numerously in college level), music( a guitarist , have performed and won many awards and presently manage cultural events here).

Lot of technical jargon in here, you are basically into day to day plant operations
All the delays and critical analysis are done here and appraised to the top management. plant level emergencies, MIS reports, presentations to GMs and directors, these are all maintained. shift wise reports are given to them.
This is all a part of your job, basically your job description.

Let me put it this way, if 50 plant operations managers apply to ISB, can you give me 3 differentiating points which distinguish you from them? Hypothetical examples: 1) I handled a team of 15 people and implemented various initiatives such as ... a) ... b) ... c) ... as a result of which I save 75000 Rs per week in cost, which translated to 10% cost improvements 2) I was brought into a section of plant where employee morale was very low and was a bottleneck in steel production output. I understood people issues there, created an incentive program to motivate employees.. as a result the output of our plant improved by 10% within 3 weeks resulting in revenue jump of 4.5% ...
extra curricular are in sports(presently in cricket team of my company and have won numerously in college level), music( a guitarist , have performed and won many awards and presently manage cultural events here).
You need to find one point out of your extra curricular, the best one and then work it into your essays.
i got all your points what you want to tell but in a steel plant, telling about the revenue or profit jump by an individual is quite rare.. all the processes are so interlinked and huge coordination is required.
i work in a section which overseas the whole plant and its quite challenging thats why i told you about the job a bit. :)
actually in plant control section, we( 2 person per shift) handle all the plant in 8 hrs time( i.e per shift), so i am not able to tell specifically as to how many people i handle. actually at the time of interview in my training, i was recommended to join plant control as a fresher. normally fresher dont get chance to work in plant control section because u have to knw all the plant and from receiving raw material to despatches.
I dont know if i am a bit boasting but handling the plant and make it run itself is a huge challenge. i directly report to higher management so the responsibility and credibility is huge
i work with people who have got more experience than my age ( the youngest person next to me is of 36 age).
i believe that i have better data screening and able to interpret the problems that my plant faces and well coordinate to solve it.
but having said that the info what you gave me is commendable. I will make them count for me. thank you.
regarding GMAT, i plan to give this july. would be right?

I understand that at times processes are blended, but rev and cost are just some examples, there might be many such business metrics which you would be impacting. Remember, as a student who wants to enter business administration you should have some but of clarity on impact of your work on business, if not mandatory, it is a knowledge great to have.
i work in a section which overseas the whole plant and its quite challenging
Great no one is denying that, but how do you explain it to a layman, that's the requirement, how would you explain it to a doctor, or an English teacher? Will you just say my work is challenging and hectic? Articulation is the first step in effective managerial communication.

How many man-days you handle divided by how many days you work, simple calc. Rough approximations will do. It's an asset to have pre-MBA people management experience, you can write stories around it.
@ivyctor2010 do 3 months from now enough time?.. would you guide me as to how to nail gmat in 3 months of a time..i am weak in VA..
Depends upon your capacity and your current level, study for 15 days and give a mock, if you are getting 600+ then you should be ready by July. I would suggest not delaying it beyond July.
@fenderl15 one more thing. do PSU companny have disadvantages over private company executives(you know the general trend of work load)..?
It's all in you on how to present it, if you yourself think your were an under-utilized resource then it doesn't matter where you were, so be confident about what you have done. An experienced adcom should not hold such a prejudice but even if he/she does, you will have to break that prejudice there and then in the interview.

Let me play Devil's Advocate here. If you want to get into IB, why would you need an MBA for that? What in your current profile prevents you from going down the IB / Hedge Funds track? Secondly, if 300 other Financial Analysts are also applying to ISB and 150 of them are cfa level 2 and other 150 are cfa level 3 cleared (all hypothetical numbers), how will you differentiate yourself from them? Think on these lines.

What has been your job profile since last 3 years? Core technical or have you been into managerial roles too?
i wanna know whether it would be wise enough to leave the job and join ISB with the current ambiguous market scenario.
This is decision which finally you have to take. Go through ISB's last year placement stats. That is one data point, studying the current economic patterns via newspaper, internet would give you other data point. Talk to Indian B-school alums if possible. But your decision to do an MBA should be largely affected from the direction which you now want to give to your career.

If you are planning to apply to ISB this year, then taking GMAT in August is late. Not that applicants don't take it then, but its not a good strategy.
Say, you do not score well (happens a lot of time with first time takers), you will not have the time for a retake. At that stage you should be focusing on writing good essays, not retaking GMAT, if you can help it.
Anyways, the scores are valid for 5 years, so whats the point of waiting until the last minute?
Being an Indian applicant, it is beneficial to get scores above the average GMAT scores posted by the b-schools for their incoming class intake. Look at the class profile details of all the b-schools you are interested in - you'll get a lot of idea about the class demographics.

I want to pursue PGP from ISB hyderabad.Take heart- ISB does not ask for your 10th grades! Anyways, you seem to have spiraled up since then, so the 10th exams are insignificant. Infact you deserve a pat for the excellent GMAT score.
Your chances of getting selected will depend more upon what you write in the rest of the application: 1. you well defined are your career goals? How do they fit in with what you have done so far? 2. Why is an MBA necessary to achieve your career goals? 3. Why is the ISB MBA necessary? 4. How has your career progression been? ( You seem quite on track there). 5. What are your key achievements? 6. what else is interesting about you other than your professional profile?
Getting these aspects nicely into the application is very important, and it is here that most applicants bungle up. So start thinking along these questions that I have posted.
