@mba-help : Hi Namitha, fellow CO'14 R1-R2 selectees,

I wanted to gain some insight into my way forward from now. I'l break things down into simple points.

-I applied to ISB PGP'14 this year, in R2 and was not shortlisted for interviews.
Briefly about my profile :
-Xth : 93%, XII - 84.4%
- Bachelor Of Engineering In Computer Sciences from DCE (72%).
- Workex of 3 years in software development in a Software (ERP domain) Biggie in Bangalore.
- Promoted to a senior role within 2 years, along with compensation incentives.
-Not much on the extracurricular front, apart from strong inclination towards hobbies such as : running, photography.
I wrote my 3 essays along these lines showing a strong desire for a technology consultant role post my MBA @ ISB - tried to justify the same.
I did, inadvertently make a couple of typos in my essays.

I wanted to know if i should re-apply this year in CO-2015, i really want to get into ISB? I am targeting R1,
My GMAT Score was low : 700. I am looking to improve upon this, but also want to make a strong case for my candidature.
I am keen on participating on extra currics in/outside office, can you give some ideas how can i improve upon my profile? I guess an on site US visit is tough in my team.

a)I just wanted to know how much will a good GMAT score factor in?
b)I am also interested in a niche'r domain now - Pharma Consulting, how can i link this to my IT background, would it be advisable to show any inclination in this domain- considering i havent yet started anything solid here.
Keeping in mind that ISB already has my career goal and other 2 essays from this year- which will be considered when i re-apply this year.

Thanks for reading all of this , hope to hear back soon :)

Why 3 different jobs in 4 years, are they Interlinked? If not you need to have a logical coherent answer of this progression.

No one can tell you your chances, but a profile evaluation can be done. Need to know more about your projects/assignments/achievements/promotions before I can comment further.

Work Exp. - 2 yrs (as on July 2013). in one of the world's largest steelmakers' - design & engg. center as Executive, Looking after the various green/brown field projects. Mostly technical work till now, with some managerial works like helping/assisting the seniors in project management etc.
Managerial work sounds great. In your essays do share your team achievements, esp team building. Do also talk about how you managed a crises situation if any. Or how you brought significant impact on customer experience. You are in a B2B market, should not deter you from claiming on good customer experience focus.

Co-curricular - President of College Photographic Society, Active member of other societies, fest organizing committees, current organization's newsletter editor and team lead.
Atleast one good story from your extra-curricular should go into your essay. Choose the best one.
@sharp3 said:
Also, what will be an ideal score in GMAT to get through ??
Aim for 700+, though 730+ should be a great advantage.

Yes a cross cultural experience is an advantage for sure, shows your ability to jell well with people from different walks of life. A positive for a B-school student. Working with a government organization also comes with its own challenges, which you should write about. But how you leverage all this entirely depends upon how you present this experience positively and most effectively into your essays.

If you have your reasons for quitting the job, do explain them whenever needed, not a big issue here.

@ivyctor2010 Thank you very much for your valuable insights, I already statred my prep for GMAT can you suggest me how to prepare for test and what kind of material I need to revise?

Thanks, and more insights are welcome from others too.

I am finding SC very dangerous to me..... plzz help/suggest for improvement as to what to be read/practice?

@Madhu99
@fenderl15 Following is from a post I wrote on GMAT a few months back:

Critical Reasoning (CR) Preparation: Critical reasoning Bible by PowerScore®, helps with all CR basics. Practice: All GMAT® Official Guide (OG-12) questions alongside reading the Bible. Aim: Achieve accuracy greater than 85% in all practice sets.

Sentence Correction (SC) Preparation: Manhattan® SC 2007 edition, is an amazing book, one may call it the SC Bible as it prepares you exhaustively for SC. Practice: Read the GMAT® Official Guide (OG-12) for SC & understand the concepts through Answer Key. Re-do all questions, if possible. Please pay significant attention to idioms as questions on them are tricky but relatively easy. Modifiers also require significant attention. Aim: Achieve accuracy greater than 85% in all practice sets. Important Tip: Don't spend equal time on all types of SC questions. Practice all of them initially & identify your weak areas. Focus your efforts more on these for more robust & efficient preparation.

Reading Comprehension (RC) Preparation: Read editorials from NY Times® or Washington Post® online or Hindu® editorial on daily basis. It helps in building your reading speed. It should be a daily exercise. Practice: Practice from all possible sources as a lot of raw practice is required to ace RCs. Practice at least 100 RCs before you start giving mocks. Aim: Read easier passage in 2-3 minutes & understand the basic gist of it. If the passage is really tough you can take up to 4 minutes. Do not rest until you achieve accuracy > 85 % in all practice sets. Important Tip: We also advice against jumping to questions first & then looking for answers in the paragraph. Reading essay first makes answering “main point” & “summary of essay” questions seem like a cakewalk.

Quantitative Preparation: GMAT® Official Guide (OG-12) gives you a basic refresher on math concepts. Writing mocks from GMAT® Prep™ software will help you understand the types of questions. Practice: Questions in GMAT® exam are trickier than in OG & GMAT® Prep™. Practicing from CAT® exam material will boost your preparation as difficulty level of questions is higher. Enough practice of these tough problems will get you into problem solving mind-set. Aim: Achieve accuracy greater than 85% in all practice sets.

Integrated Reasoning (IR) Overview: This is a section newly added to GMAT & consists of 12 questions. These questions have four different formats: two-part analysis, table analysis, graphics interpretation & multi-source reasoning. Integrated reasoning scores are reported from 1-8 with intervals of 1. This section is to test student's ability to grasp different forms of data & combine them to answer questions. Preparation: Initially go through the GMAT prep questions & understand the solutions thoroughly. That will give you an idea on what is expected out of each format of questions. Practice: Lot of raw practice is required to improve speed & accuracy. Aim: Achieve accuracy greater than 85% in all practice sets. Important Tip: First try to understand basics underlying each format. Thereafter it's pure reasoning. However at onset the questions may seem quite challenging & mind-boggling.

Summary Plan
ØGet the basics right first & then practice at least 500 questions for each SC, CR & RC
ØGive as many mocks as possible
ØTake all the 6 Manhattan Mock tests Some general GMAT tips:
ØTake as many mocks as possible. Start by taking a mock test at least once a fortnight & once a week towards the end
ØTake at least 5 mocks along with AWA, perhaps the last five you take
ØImprove on SC early in your preparation as it helps on multiple fronts. It helps to give more time on RC e.g. one RC may take 7 minutes, for reading & attempting 3 questions i.e. more than 2 minutes per question. With sufficient practice candidates can bring down the SC timing to less than 1.5 minutes per question & devote that extra time to RC questions.

Recommended Books

1)Critical reasoning Bible by PowerScore®
2)GMAT® Official Guide (OG-12) for Sentence Correction
3)Manhattan® SC Guide latest edition
4)Kaplan® Mock & Practise Test for Quant & GMAT® Official Guide (OG-12) (Relatively Easy)
5)CAT Quant guides (More Robust Practice)
6)Manhattan® Mock Tests
7)GMAT® Prep™ Mock Tests

Best of luck.
Hi,
I am Rohith. The reason I am writing to you I see you are really helping out MBA aspirants on this forum and I hope I would receive equal support and assistance for my queries.

My profile:
X : 90.33
XII : 94.5
B. tech : 69
Work Ex: 22 months, as on today
Sector : IT
Role: Business Consultant
Extracurricular activities: Sports college level, CSR activities, NSS at college etc. Not much of these

I am planning to give GMAT. Considering my profile, pls advice me on the following questions:

1. What is the best time to give GMAT?
2. Considering ISB and my profile, how much should i score in GMAT?
3. For ISB, is my work ex sufficient and my profile good enough to be eligible to apply for it's PGP?
4. Is it mandatory to improve on extracurricular activities? I wonder how do i have to do that now
5. If I am applying to ISB this year, when should I be ready with my GMAT?
6. Pls also throw some light on the European B schools which offer 12- 13 months MBA program. How good are their placements and learning curve in their institutes?
7. I heard that there are schools which offer almost 90% - full waiver if we score 700 - 720 in GMAT? Pls correct me if i am wrong. Else please elaborate on the same.

Your responses are much needed for my preparation.
Thanks in advance!!!

Hi sysman,

We at MBA Decoder have been offering a reject analysis to applicants who did not get an admit from the b-schools they applied to. If you are interested, you can send over your application to me. Just send me a PM.

I guess ISB sees far too many applicants with profiles similar to yours. There's a possibility you were lost among them - will know better on looking at your app.

There are people who get into ISB with a score of 700 (and some who don't get in with a score of 750), so its your overall application packaging which matters.

My take is that ISB introduced the video essay last year to weed out applicants whose communication skills were not up to mark - though I would assume most Indian applicants would fare well on that front, including you.

Get involved outside office in activities which interest you. There are about 6 months to go for Round 1, so you'd really want to be doing things which resonate with your interests (running/ photography), rather than taking up activities where you have never been involved before. For instance, there is a website called Treetle (no promotion, this ) which has some photography clubs- maybe you should organize something for Bangaloreans there.

IT consulting/ pharma consulting- would need to understand it better and how it fits into your scheme. There's no harm if you want to get more niche about about career goals in the re-application. Afterall, ISB has given you another year to refine/define your career goals and come back as a stronger candidate.

Though, you have pointed out you have so far not been involved with pharma consulting- if it interests you so much and if your company has related projects, now is the time to try your hands there. It will make your 'new' career goals credible.

Hope that helps,

Namita, MBA Decoder

Not really clear what your role is please give more details.
@Thumma said:
1. What is the best time to give GMAT?
Atleast 1.5 months before ISB R1 deadline. You would need good amount of time to prepare yourself and your essays. Aim for a GMAT of 700+. A score of 730+ would be an advantage.
@Thumma said:

Not clear about your profile mention more details please.
@Thumma said:
4. Is it mandatory to improve on extracurricular activities? I wonder how do i have to do that now
Not mandatory but it adds a different flavor to your profile. If your professional profile is very good then you dont need extra co.
@Thumma said:
6. Pls also throw some light on the European B schools which offer 12- 13 months MBA program. How good are their placements and learning curve in their institutes?
Very generic question, I may have to publish a book to answer this. Please be more specific.
@Thumma said:

Scholarship is for sure a concern but your number one concern should be school-industry tie-ups and schools' brand equity. Going to a low rung school where you study for free but do not get good MBA degree, is no use.
