Hi I am new to this forum..I am focussing to give gmat in december this year,,,I have few concerns ..your valuable inputs can help me to clear them...

1) how much part does the reference plays in ur admission at ISB?

2) how many references are required...references from the current employer is required or from all the past employers

3) do frequent switches effect admission at ISB??

Hi Harsh ...
Here it goes ...
1. Reference play very important role not only at ISB but also at any TOP b school..why is it so imp is because its an evaluation about you from someone who has been closely associated to you professionally and he/she will be in a position to know your strengths, compare you with your peer groups and can give a good candid assessment of your leadeship potential.. Thats why most B schools require references from your superiors / clients with whom you have worked nd not from relativies( they can be biased)

2. Most Bschools require 2 professional references . Incl ISB.. Its good if you can get from current employer but Bschools understand that it may not be easy for everyone to approach his/her current employer. In this case u can get ref from previous employers or clients with whom you have worked..

3. Frequent job hopping should not be problem for your admission per se .. But you may need to justify your career moves with your short/ long term goals.. You need to have a strong story around your career moves and you learning at each organisation.. Future employers at placement might question you on this but if you have valid reasons for your moves ..you are good to go !!!

Hope it helps..

Hi Puys,

Wanted to ask how much an AWA score matters? Somehow, I messed up my my AWA section percentile but I was suggested not to retake GMAT just to improve AWA score. I was thinking that perhaps I should address this in the third essay.

Any suggestions. Please reply.

Thanks
Ankit

Can anybody please advise on my profile? Pls!

@[411633:ankitkankane] - Man it depends what was your GMAT score? Meesin up AWA doesn't means that you would retake the exam! I guess you need to ask admissions people form ISB for a better clarity, I know each n every person you would ask can only give there point of view, but the real verdict should be from ISB admissions!

AWA basically serves as a tool for a bschool to compare level of application essays with your score. It helps the Bschool to basically judge that the essays have indeed been written by you. I read somewhere that even essays you wrote in GMAT test are available to Bschool , if it chooses to buy the same.

hi puys,

Can switching from a top MNC to a small product company(300 employees and deals in pioneering payment solutions) hamper future prospects of an MBA....need reply please...

@[328287:varunz1985]: why do u think it will hamper? It's what you are doing at a particular organisation is imp .. I can a finance executive a huge MNC vis-a-vis a financial controller at a small company .. If in this small company I can show that I made a substantial contribution .. That's what schools are looking at .. Yes there is no denying that B schools love brand ( top Ibanks, Consulting companies ..) but is what you do at your company is of more importance ...

@[599007:Hardshps] Get the official guide first.. you should get Manhattan Sentence Correction too.. These too are reliable sources.

Hope it helps.

@[599007:Hardshps] Start with the Official Guide. If you think you need further guidance on preparing for Grammar, buy Manhattan GMAT guide to Sentence Correction. For critical reasoning CR Bible is the best book available. Read many magazines to improve Reading Comprehension. Generally, maths section is easy for Indian test takers.

@[319221:sansd] I am not the right person to comment on your chances though...I would strongly recommend that you retake gmat.. there is no harm in retaking it. you should score in the range, given your experience.

Hi,

You can start of by logging on to mba.com and get a brief idea of the structure. There are a few sites which are kind of more dedicated for GMAT. You can check out Beaththegmat.com and gmatclub.com

Download the mocks from mba.com and try to assess your present baseline score by attempting the first test. That will help you get started and also a fair idea of which areayou need to work upon. There on you could try to get acquainted with the types asked on the GMAT and practice accordingly.

The OG is a must have. The Manhattan SC guide is a good reference as has been mentioned already by others.

@[319221:sansd] : I have a 610 GMAT and going ahead with that score .. I have 8 yrs exp post my CA( first attempt) ,CWA, CMA and CVA into Ibanking and M&A..; Worked in 28 countries and led multi billion dollars cross border deals .. Currently working as an Assistant director with a big 4 in M&A; ..9 out 10 people I spoke with asked me to retake GMAT .. But I believe in my profile and taking chance.. Not sure if it will work out but I hope it does πŸ˜ƒ
