ISB CONNECT: Ask current ISB students

Hi
I am keen on pursuing a management degree from a reputed B school 2 to 3 years down the line. I am looking at applying to ISB within the same time frame after writing my GMAT. This post is essentially to get a few questions of mine clarified so as to be better prepared for the application process.I know ISB values the profile immensely and looks to add diversity in the class

To give a little bit of insight into my background, I am an Instrumentation Engineer having a consistent academic record ..nothing exemplary
X:85.4%
XII : 83%
grad : 76.43%

with decent extra curricular activities. I have been working in a software firm for the past 16 months now( way too common i know...thats exactly what i want to change) . I have an option of quitting my present job and working full-time with a prominent NGO undertaking a very exciting and challenging venture for 2 years.

I would be happy if you could put a few issues that i have in the correct perspective wrt the admission.

1) First and foremost, would such a venture ie working full-time with the NGO be considered as work experience per say? Will this considered as something unique?

2) What does ISB look for in a candidate before sending him/her a interview call? I know this way too generic, but if someone could just specify one or two critical points it'll be helpful.

3) I am interested in pursuing social entrepreneurship as a long term goal and I have a specific vision towards that goal. Do i need to attend/conduct sessions, presentations, certifications that will portray the seriousness of my thinking? Are such issues kept in mind while shortlisting the candidate for the interview?

4) Lastly, how does one view the totality of the profile of a candidate who has applied? What other enhancements do i need to add to my profile to make more marketable?

I hope to get a few answers from you guys , so that I am better equipped when the time comes. cheers...

Hello!

I am working with Reliance Infrastructure Limited (Energy EPC business) as Asstt. Manager - Business Strategy & Business Development. I have 21 months of work ex as of now, and will be having 32 months of work-ex by april 2011 (44 months by april 2012). I am planning to take the GMAT in july 2010

acads: 10th 87% CBSE:p , 12th 67% CBSE , B Tech (from NIT) 8.34 /10 CGPA :p. NSE certification in financial markets (NCMP Level-2)...decent EC (if not too great)

Please answer my query:

1) I am confused wether I should apply for co 2012 or co 2013. reasons: no international work-ex, average acads and the workex being on lower side if I apply for co2012.:nono:
Assuming I have an above average interview, do i stand a chance of making it to co2012

(if i apply to co2013, I would have substantial workex + i intend to complete one or two level of CFA exam by then, as I am interested in a career switch to finance). Shall I apply for co2012 or wait for another year (i have no intention to wait if there's fair probability of getting an offer)

2) Can I apply to co2013 (i.e in year 2012) with my GMAT score of July 2010???
I understand the score is valid for 5 years but i've heard most b-schools prefer a fresh score.
My score would be 15-16 months old by then? Is it something ISB would consider??

3) If I apply to co2012 and i am denied the offer, will it be tougher me get an offer for co2013? I have heard re-applicants have to write an additional essay. My point is, If there's no / little chance of getting an admission in co2012, I would'nt want to hamper my chances for co2013

4) Can you please help me in getting in touch with a current student/ alumi who has/had pre-ISB work-ex similar to mine? (lets say B tech from NIT with not-so-great acads and 2-3 years work-ex in power / manufacturing/ construction industry)

in continuation to my qn..earlier Post ISB iam looking for a role in management consulting..with my prior exp of technical consultancy in power sector field...will I cosnidered for such role Post ISB.........pl shed some light on this....

Hi ISB CONNECT,
First of all I would like to thank and appreciate your initiative in helping all aspirants.

Secondly, I have few queries which I would like to ask:

1) I am a software engineer with 22 months work ex as of now will be ( which will be 26 months by the time I apply in R1). Is it possible with such low work ex (just 2 years) and the functional area (IT) of being shortlisted. My profile is all average. If not so, then in your opinion should I apply in R2?

2) I have been hearing a lot about deferred admissions. Can you throw some light on what are they and under what circumstances they are offered to students.

3) I want to change my field from IT to consulting. Given the current scenario where I have no idea of consulting, is it possible to major in consulting and land up in good companies (say big 4) after ISB?

4) Can a student pursue entrepreneurship and consulting simultaneously and major in one of them while pursuing other.

5) Are there any hobby clubs in ISB. Like I enjoy clicking photographs as a passtime, does ISB has some club where fellow photographers share their clicks or something like that. If yes what other hobby clubs are present?

6) While applying, it is required to submit two recommendations and it is encouraged that we give recommendations from our immediate boss. But there is a constant danger of not getting selected, which sheds wrong image upon your current job. In such scenarios are recommendations from other people in office ( like some other working group) or your peers equally well weighed. Also does this impact the thinking process of adcom.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hello ISBConnect ,

How was the final placement statistics for 2009-10 batch? Have all the students got jobs ? what was the average salary and the maximum salary?

Hi there ISB people,

I am right now working with Steel Authority of India Ltd. as a junior manager for the last 3 years. I am planning to write Gmat in june end.

My profile is as follows:

10th: 80%
12th :60%

Btech : Electrical Engg. frm JSS ATE NOIDA( A Private institution of UP Technical University) securing 70% aggregate.

Passed out in 2007 and straightaway got selected in SAIL by all India exam route, and joined in Bhilai Steel Plant( a flagship unit of SAIL .

I joined Blast Furnaces (Electrical Maintenance) as a Junior Manager. The Blast Furnace is the heart of an integrated steel plant persons in this field will acknowledge the above fact.

I have served in various sections of the department which includes

* technical jobs i.e supervision of maintenance activities for electrical equipments in the area, which includes working with the latest electrical installations viz. automation systems(PLCs and Drives), switchgear, basic electrical installations and have also been involved in commissioning of a couple of projects for increasing productivity of Blast Furnaces.

*Apart from that I was the part of the planning team of the electrical spares management systems for Blast Furnaces, where I had to handle ERP(user end). Indent making and Reviewing Budgetary offers being the major areas of work there.

So, all in all had a chance to study the technical aspect both from a site manager's viewpoint as well as a planner's viewpoint (for maintenance of spares)

* Dealing with people has been one of the major thrust areas of my job as while working in this profile you have to supervise around 50 people at one go.
Dividing them in groups, measuring each person's strengths and allocating him the right job at the right place is a crucial thing here. Its a 24 hour running plant so a halt in production for a few minutes causes a loss of lacs of rupees.Hence you have to be very careful while allocating jobs, as per the technical acumen of people below you.

* Apart from these things, I am a keen debater, and have won accolades for debates and Group Discussions at college and company level. I have been an active member of the cricket team in college. As far as company level participation is concerned I have won chess tournaments, been a part of the cricket team for the internal cricket tournaments staged by the company and very recently got the opportunity to organize a tournament on the lines of IPL in Bhilai Plant's fraternity, which was a huge success.I have also organised LAN gaming tournaments, chess tournaments and cricket tournaments at college level.

* I am passionate about cricket, WWF ,oratory and chatting. I am a happy go lucky person who likes being cheerful and considers my smile as one of my major stregths.

Would you kindly suggest, does this profile fall in line with what the people at ISB ask for???

I would suggest you go through the ISB website. It should clear a lot of your doubts!!
To answer this particular question... ISB full time employment can be considered as work experience. Since you completed your Bachelors in 2010, I am assuming that your experience has been part time.

hi, jawaharn
thanks for reply, i am not saying right now i want to join in isb..
my question is about, what if the case when i want to join in 2012.

Good to know that you have good EC.
But since you are from a IT background, it might not be a bad idea to take GMAT again!!
For your application itself... focus on three things
1. Acads
2. EC
3. Work-ex

You have to come across as someone who adds value to any in-class discussion..
Hope thats a good starting point!

If you are looking to join 2012-2013 batch then i guess u will have 2 years of work-ex by then and satisfy the minimum eligibility requirements.
However, do note tht the average batch work-ex is usually 5.5 yrs.

If you feel that your profile is good enough, then you can surely apply!

Cheers..

Hi guys,

This seems to be an old thread. I am a current student at ISB and I had started a new thread called ISB Connect sometime back for the upcoming batch. There are already quite a large number of questions answered on that thread.

I request all prospectives and ISB alums and current students to please start posting questions, replying to answers respectively on that thread.

The link is http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/isbconnect-25056724
