Hi TEAM,
Thanks a lot for starting this thread and maintaining it too.
My queries are...
I have currently 16months of Exp in IT and alongside i have my own business which I have started in 2008 april,
The industry I work is a pure IT Company and the business is run is of selling PCs and accepting AMCs (annual maintenance contract
We also undertake computer classes to people/students who are at the BPL(Below poverty line) with the help of LIONS CLUB
On a total I would be having 2years of business experience and 20months of IT Experience by April 2010 which is when I am planning to give my GMAT
My target is to appear for ISB Class of 2012
My academics are average (10th(ICSE) 55% 12th(PUC) 54% BE(VTU) 58%) but have good extra curricular and social service fields along with some certifications.
My query is can I put my work exp as 2yrs + 20months or only one would be considered
I am interested in marketing hope my profile is ok
What GMAT score would help me in covering up my acads?
Thanks
Nithin R Puthige
Hi Nithinpr,
An average acads can be compensated by a really good GMAT score. Since you are planning to apply for class of 2012, you still have time to prepare well for GMAT and score high. You cannot view GMAT score in silo. Your past acad performance and GMAT score could be taken together to understand how well you can keep up with the acad rigour of a one year MBA program. You cannot change your past scores, so you can aim for a score of 750+, which could be considered as good enough. Regarding work ex, you could choose one of the above and since you are doing your business part time, it's better to take your full time job work ex into consideration. Still, it will be better for you to clarify this with the admissions office at ISB. Just to add, your extra curricular activities should stand you in good stead. ISB looks at the holistic picture rather than in silos. That being said, since IT profiles are the most competitive it always helps to pull the plugs on all sides - in your case it could be done by scoring high in GMAT. Hope this helps.

2. Can i get some idea about no. of participants from Power/ Energy field.
3. What is Energy Operations and manufacturing club all about.
4. Is aspiration to go to a completely different field from your own construed as a delusion.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have a query regarding interviews at ISB.
I need to travel abroad in mid October and as I understand, the interviews at ISB will start sometime in mid of October. So, I wanted to understand if it makes a difference if I opt for a telephonic interview or a personal interview is always better? Do telephonic interviews reduce your chances of getting an admit?
PS : I hope I get an interview call for this question to stand valid
Thanks and best regards.
HI nn_nn,
It doesnt make much of the difference whether you have a telephonic interview or otherwise, it just depends on your comfort level and the way you feel confident!!!
All the best.

Hello
I am currently in my second year of my four year engineering course. I would like to join the ISB after my graduation without going for any full time work experience. Does ISB accept people with zero work experience? Can high academic scores and GMAT score compensate for zero work experience?
thank you
Hi adi_rokss,
ISB doesnt give admissions to people with zero work-ex, however great acads may you have, actually the course is designed so that you cannot derive full value if you dont have the requisite work-ex
Many thanks to ISB Connect for taking this initiative..

Hi instigator,
1. Yes ISB offers a major in Operations and has one of the best faculties to support that. Apart from theory you can do an ELP in operations which is essentially a live consulting project, which will provide you practical exposure.
2. Figure are provided at http://www.isb.edu/PGP/classof2010-graphs.shtml
3. Clubs organize different activities right from speaker series, different competitions and panel discussions etc. other part of club is to facilitate preparation for the placement and provide information on the industry and trends in market.
4. No it is very much possible, ISB opens up doors to different industries and functions and lots of students have changed their fields in previous years.
Thanks a lot

Hi nithinpr,
You cannot add your work-ex like this it will be counted as 2 years only not 4 years. It is no. of years of work-ex after your graduation.
You can suggest your manager as one of the recommender but from business point of view it will be better to have recommendation from a client.

Hello,
I am a retired Ex-serviceman and I am targetting ISB as one of the institutes to equip myself with the essentials of business Management. In the Seven years in the Indian Navy, I have worked in varied fields suchas Operration and Maintenance, Project Management and Strategy formulation. Thereafter, I have joined a Private sector compnay and working in Marketing looking after product development.
I am planning to start an independent venture in the long term, after working for a private sector company for a few years post my stint at ISB (Provided i get selected). can u please guide me as regards the following:
(a) Experience of the Ex-servicemen who have completed the course from ISB
(b) How does electives like ELP and Planning an Entrepreneurship venture help me, as i have very little experience in the private sector
(c) Job opportunities for Ex-servicemen post ISB as we have very limited "relevant experience"
Thanks in advance
Hi,
First of all thanks a lot for this initiative!!
I am an IT professional and my client is an American Insurance Company.
I have a strong interest in analytical Finance and this is the concentration I will like to study, if selected for ISB.
I will like to pursue a career in the Insurance sector and would really appreciate if you could share with me how an MBA in Finance from ISB will help my career shift to the Insurance sector.
Could you kindly share any examples of ISB Alumni who have graduated in Analytical Finance and are doing well with jobs in Insurance companies.
Thanks again and Best Regards!!

Hi Pralhadesh,
(a) Every year, we have a handful of students who have had a stint with the Army/Navy. Please let us know what experience you would want them to share, and we will try and connect you with them.
(b) ELP is an experiential Learning program. These are real life consulting and management projects that are assigned to teams. Reputed I-bank like Goldman Sachs etc recruit teams to work on strategy and implimentation projects. These are credit projects and an extremely useful learning tool for our students. Both ELP and PAEV help you gain business understanding and provide a practical perspective
(c) I would not rate an Army or Navy experience as a limited experience. In fact, in the past, experienced students with stints in the armed forces have bagged some really good jobs.
Hope this helps !

Hi Singhshaman,
We acknowledge your appreciation of our initiative.
There are quite a few students who major in finance at ISB. The school has a research centre that is totally focussed on analytical finance (Please check the details on the ISB website)
We have a number of alumni working in the insurance space. However, you should be very sure of your transition from IT to Analytical finance. Given the current scenario, companies (including the insurance companies), do look for relevant experince in the domain. Nevertheless, the shift is possible and the school fully supports students who are willing to make the change.

Hi, Thank you for the response to my queries. I really appreicate the initiative taken by you puys to help all ISB aspirants.
As regards the experiences, I would like to know the job propspects once they have selected a career path of their choice and the way recruiting companies look at the profile. I would also like to know the leverage that the army / navy experience gets and the level at which we join the company?
Thanking you once again....

Hi ,
Please write a mail to [email protected] and ask to connect with a current student from Army background. ISB CONNECT has over 50 volunteers from different backgrounds and a student with relevant experience would help you.
thats indeed a great initiative and i wish to extend my appreciations for the same...i am an ISB aspirant appearing for the GMAT exam in dec 2009...i have few querries which may please be resolved..
(a) I am an army short service officer serving with "Corps of Engineers" and presently on deputation with "Border Roads Organization".Will be completing my tenure in Mar 2011. Though i am a grad in "electrical Engg",my work profile is completely of "Civil Engg"....ie handling "highway engg" projects.which is the stream i should choose for my MBA. Does ISB offer a course relevant to my field and work experience.
(b) If not..which are the other schools in India and Abroad relevant to my profile which i can opt for?
(c) I had a comparatively low score in my engg ,but my work profile is good..how much is that going to help??How best can the GMAT score help me out in case of a poor grad score.???
(d) Finally, what is the cut-off score for admission into ISB???
I want to do MBA in finance and have a couple of questions regarding this -
1. From you site, I got an impression that ISB puts more stress on consulting. For example, there is a program called 'GLOBAL CONSULTING PRACTICUM' but there is no such program for finance. Could you please share some details about any special program for finance ?
2. I also want to understand the prospects of students doing MBA in finance. Could you please let me know what kind of positions are offered by recruiters to such students during placements ?
I would really appreciate your help on these queries.
Regards,
Rishabh
Guys, We have our End terms starting this week and have a 10 day break between Core terms and Elective terms. So the response time would be longer. Appreciate your patience.
Hi guys,
Hope this is the right forum to ask this but is there any way I can get in touch with ex-ISB or even current ISB students who have 10+ years of work exp before they started the course. Preferably I'm looking for people who have worked in IT before embarking on the ISB course.
