It's back! -[2008] Ask ISB-Hyderabad: Admission Director answers your queries!

Hi Sir
Thanks for the efforts which you are putting to solve queries of all puys.

My question is related to LOR. I am working in an IT firm since last 2 yrs and have a total experience of 2 yrs only. My question is whether I should ask my Tech. Lead for LOR or my project manager or director of engineering of my vertical. As far as LOR is concerned each of them should give me more or less equally good feedback i.e. in a nutshell what is the effect of position of the person from whom you are getting your LOR.

Further please also tell whether I should go for only one LOR from my company or other one also from my college(IIT Roorkee).

My last point is with GMAT scores receipt at ISB. My GMAT date is 11th of August. I was wondering if ISB would receive my official GMAT score before 15th Sep. By the way what is the weightage of AWA sections for ISB as I find myself little weak for that section. When should I start my application process so that everything reaches to ADCOM within time.

Thanks for your patience.

Anshu,

Your recommenders position will not add any strength to your application. What matters most is how well he/she knows you. We would suggest that you take your recos from your immediate supervisor, if not him then your Project Manager/Director (only if you think that they will be able to do justice to your personality).

Regarding taking recos from college, we would recommend that only in case you have no other option. The reason being that in the two years that you have been working your personality might have undergone a change which will then not be reflected in the recos given by your Profs.

It usually takes maximum of 3 weeks for us to receive the official score report, so you need not worry about that since your test date is Aug 11. Due weight age is given to the AWA section which we will not be able to disclose.

You can start writing your application from today, just make sure that you upload it before the deadlines (1st cycle 15 September and 2nd cycle 1 December).

I think I have a very different situation here. I'm currently doing my undergraduate in Information Technology in a university in the United States, which I am due to complete by 2009 December. I am a part time student, but a full time entrepreneur. I had started my company 3 years ago and we are arrayed into 3 sectors very related to Information Technology. First, we provide higher level and post grad, skills specific training. Second, we provide consulting services to valued and well known companies in the United States. Third, we are also an Internet start up, that is in the educational field and are currently partnering with 8, world wide known United States Universities. Not to boast here but our projected revenue for 2008 is $1.5 to $2 million US dollars. So as a company and me at the helm, we have been very successful. I would like to do an MBA as we have immediate (i.e. next 2 years) future global plans that would expand our company into the $3 to $4 million US dollar bracket, and more after that. So as a part of this expansion, I feel that leadership is very important, and to lead a group of people that are from different aspects of life and different backgrounds, I believe an MBA is very important. I have taken the GMAT recently and scored a 760, I can also retake this as recommended and If I feel needed from my research.

Now onto my questions:

1. Would I even be considered to ISB, as my work experience has been parallel with my part time undergraduate studies?

2. How is time usually spent on weekends, is it accessible to students to participate in city wide activities? The reason I ask is that, with a recent addition of a Doctor to our board, we are very interested in pursuing a project specific merger offer, we had received from a listed Indian company and a American firm.

3.I have read the website, and am reluctant to ask this question, but is it absolute to live on campus as it states, or have exceptions been made?

4. As someone that interacts with so many future stars of the world, what do you think is the main factor that sets ISB apart from the rest of World renowned B-schools?

I would like to thank you in advance for your time and attention to my questions and concerns. I hope things do work out as I would ideally like to place an interim CEO as I pursue my Masters. Finally I would to add accolades for forming such as great institution as the main reason for me to pursue an India MBA is the global exposure and interaction that ISB offers with the biggest emerging market in the world.

P.S. Also if anyone else would like to comment, please do, as I am eager to hear the voices of everyone, thanks.

Dear Sir,

I would llike to know whether there is any concentration on Branding/Brand Management at ISB?

Vivek,

Yes, we do offer Brand Management as an elective under Strategic Marketing concentration. Pleas follow the link to know more about electives offered at ISB http://www.isb.edu/PGP/ElectiveCourses.Shtml

Hi Team,

I have some questions, answers to which I have not been able to find elsewhere. This is not a profile check.

1. I have 16 months of international experience in China out of a total of 26 months of work experience. If I elaborate on the depth and the quality of this experience using the optional essay to highlight my professional maturity, focus and leadership potential, would it substantially strengthen my overall application and negate the impact of my relatively low work experience.
2. Is the Proof of Income used only to confirm that the candidate is employed. Does it serve any other purpose during the application process ?
3. I am entitled to both off-shore and on-site compensation. Do I need to upload proof for both.

Thank You !!!
Warm Regards,
Shankar Ramachandran

Shankar,

1) You can talk about your work exp in the optional essay only if you think that you have not been able to do justice to your exp in other parts of the application. Please make sure that the essay is not repetitive.

2) No, that is just one of the reasons.

3) Yes.

Riverdreams,

As an entrepreneur, if you are not engaged in any other activity, then your exp will be treated as full time.

Hi,
I had clicked on contact a alumni option from the ISB website because I have some specific questions I wanted to ask. And I got this reply back from ISB Admin:
"We have forwarded your details to XXXX, a current student to write to you directly."
But I have not got any call back from him though its been close to a week. What should I do?

The website clearly mentions We do not provide you with the contact details of the alumnus/student. Your details will be forwarded to the alumnus/student with a similar profile as yours and he/she will directly get in touch with you via email. It may take 15 days to a months time for them to get in touch with you.

Please note that your details have been forwarded to a current student who might be busy with classes/assignments. The students due to their hectic schedule might take some time to reply to your queries; we will highly appreciate patience on your part.

Admissions Team
Thanks for replying to the previous question.

Few more questions that come to my mind as i am filling the details in the online application form are:

1. Can we check if ISB has recieved the official score report for the GMAT ? If yes, how?
2. Is there any way to check if the recommendations sent by the recommendors have reached ISB?
3. I find that uploading a scanned passport size picture needs a lot of attention and care (as this might go wrong as shown in the sample wrongly uploaded pictures). Can one upload a digital passport picture with the requisite size and specifcations? Can some of the adcom members check if the file loaded is appropriate (as per the guidelines)?

I know these questions may sound a bit naive but i dont wanna be disqualified for such silly mistakes.

Loosecontrol,

1) Yes, you can. Drop in a mail to [email protected] and we will get back to you on the status. The same holds for recos as well.

2) Yes, you can upload a digital photograph. Mail us your picture at the above email id and we will let you know if it is appropriate or not.

Hi Team,

Thank You for your previous reply.
--- You have mentioned in your reply that you use the Proof of Income for multiple reasons. Are you at liberty to discuss some of these reasons and their impact on the application process ?

--- My Evaluator has recently submitted his evaluation online. I find that I am not able to view this evaluation in my application. I am yet to submit my completed application to Adcom. Is this because ISB has a non disclosure policy wrt a candidate's evaluation ?

Hi Sir,

If we have discontinued the Graduation program but has completed it this year due to some financial and family issues, and having 3.5 years of experience will I be considered for admission?

Thanks,
Ram

Dear Mr. Menon / AdCom,

From the various discussion forums and information posted in the ISB site, I understand that the evaluation of the applicants is based primarily on the following criteria:

Past Academic Performance
Breadth and Depth of Professional Experience
Co-curricular activities (including social services undertaken, special skills etc)
GMAT Score
Application Essays

(Kindly include any other criterion I have missed)

Are there any 'weights' assigned to the above criteria? To be more specific, 'assuming' that there are only 5 criteria listed above, does each criterion carry 20% weight?

If the weights assigned are not uniform, can you please shed light on the criteria that ISB actually use and the weights they carry?

Sincerely,
AM

Shankyrams,

We are not in a position to discuss that aspect. Regarding your recos,
you will not be able to view the evaluation in your application as we receive it directly the moment your evaluator submits it. You will receive an intimation mail once we get your recos.

Ram,

If you have post qualification work exp, then you are eligible to apply. If this exp was gained while you were studying then you are not eligible to apply.

Dear Sir,

I have 12 years of work experience in the IT field. I have worked in the areas of Database development , Database Administration and QA Manager. My years of experience include 4 years in India and 8 in the US (presently in the US as a Database Manager in a well know bank)

I had given my GMAT in 2006 July but was unable to apply due to health issues of my parents.

Can I apply to ISB with July 2006 score and what will be my chances ?

Thanks
RK

You can apply with 2006 GMAT score. Your score is valid till July 2011.

Dear Sir,

I want to know about the teaching method followed at ISB. Does it rely more on case studies or is it an equal mix of case studies and classroom style teaching. Also,

Regards,

Dear Mayank,
The teaching style is a good mix of case studies and lectures but the percentage of these certainly differs from subject to subject. For example, in a subject like Economics, we have more of lectures and less of case studies whereas in a subject like Competitive Strategy it could be almost 90% of case studies.

1. Would I even be considered to ISB, as my work experience has been parallel with my part time undergraduate studies?
You have to have post-qualification work experience and your work experience during your studies will not be counted as a full time work experience.
2. How is time usually spent on weekends, is it accessible to students to participate in city wide activities? The reason I ask is that, with a recent addition of a Doctor to our board, we are very interested in pursuing a project specific merger offer, we had received from a listed Indian company and a American firm.
The course at the ISB is extremely rigorous. Even the weekends are packed with projects and assignments. So you will hardly get time for any other work outside studies.
3.I have read the website, and am reluctant to ask this question, but is it absolute to live on campus as it states, or have exceptions been made?
Every student has to live on campus and this is absolutely compulsory. No exceptions have ever been made or can be made in the future.
4. As someone that interacts with so many future stars of the world, what do you think is the main factor that sets ISB apart from the rest of World renowned B-schools?
The following factors:
1) The programme at the ISB is of one-year duration. This makes it possible for working professionals to easily spend a year in business school without losing too much at work in terms of time and money.
2) ISB brings several international faculties under one roof. The students get a chance to interact with some of the best global faculty from schools like the Wharton, Kellogg, LBS, Duke, Cornell, Chicago etc... all at the same place at the ISB . These faculty stay on the campus during teaching their course. They are accessible to students even after class hours.
3) ISB offers a world class programme at probably one-third of what it would cost you to pursue an MBA programme at any other top global business school.
4) India is right now the place where the action is. Our economy is growing very fast and the top global companies are coming to India to capture a slice of the market pie. Studying at the ISB at this point in time will help a student gain vital insights about the emerging market and help him with his decisions as a business leader in the future.
