It's back! -[2008] Ask ISB-Hyderabad: Admission Director answers your queries!

Dear Mr. Menon,
Can you please tell me when a mail is sent to the recommenders? Is it sent as soon as I enter their mail-ids and save, or is it sent after I complete my full application and hit the final submit button?
I ask this, because my manager from whom I'll to take a reco might go on a vacation before I complete my application. So, I would like to get the reco as soon as possible.

Also, apart from 2 recos, can I send an additional reco ?

Thanks,
Saurabh

Itsme_291,

It is sent as soon as you enter their mail-ids and save the details. You can submit your application on a later date. You cannot send a third reco, the software will decline the request. We require only two recos.

Hello Sir,

Can we give personal mail-id's of our recomendors. Coz one of them have quit the company right now and is planning on a start-up. So the only mail access they have is their own personal one.

Also, do you need any written recos(meaning the one written on the official letterhead) in addition to the online ones.

Regards
George

Dear Admissions Team,
I am from medical profession. 37yrs with 8 years post MD work experience both India and in UK, experience that includes teaching and clinical(hospital).
I plan to gain skills in Healthcare management( not hospital administration) - skills specific for HCM include - strategic planning, quality healthcare delivery, healthcare finance, supplychain, leadership, IT in healthcare, entrepreneurship and healthcare business development. I am not looking for a post management job in pharma - biotech firms but in Management of healthcare delivery systems.

I have taken GMAT (620 - q-47, v- 27).
Do you think I should apply to ISB and can ISB train me with the required skills?

Kindly reply.

Dear Sir, I have a BS and an MS in agricultural sciences + a total of 3yrs of work experience in R&D; (agri bioech) in the US awa India. Last year (when I had 2yrs work ex), my application was rejected. My GMAT score is 660 (Q 48 V33). I've strong extracurriculars and career goals.
Please suggest me, what can I do to make my application this year heavier. Should I wait for another year to gain more work ex? I am already working on improving my GMAT score, and further handling more responsiblity at work.
ALso, does the school looks at candidates with agricultural sciences as a diverse background or would you suggest me instead to try something like MBA in agriculture from IIM?

Dear Sir,

The question I would like to put across to you is regarding placement trends of the institute especially because yours being a one year course there is no internship .So how often do students change sectors wherefrom they join prior to the MBA programme?

Specifically speaking what are the trends of migration to Investment banking, because IBanks predominantly choose people who have either experience/internship in the sector.

Dear Mr Menon,

I am an perspective student with about 6.5 years of experience in IT.
I hear that the class size is 560 now. How does ISB intend to ensure that with such a huge batch size....
1. the quality of the learning remains intact. How do you plan to ensure that there will be good quality 560 students available to foster the mutual learning for people with higher experience. With IIMA, C, L and now even B, XLRI, SPJAIN all having 1 year MBA, isnt the competition hotting up too much for such a huge bath size.
2. Does ISB foresee the proportion of career switch out of the whole batch size remaining same or will there be a drop in this option due to the increase in total intake and opportunities remaining more or less stable.
3. Will the international exchange program increase the total number of opportunities or will it also remain same, thereby decreasing the chances.
4. Is the overall ISB infrastructure ready to take this increased load or will it be developed over a period of time.
Thanks
Aditya

Dear Mr.Menon,

I have a question regarding the letters of recommendation.
Is it mandatory that the letters must be from my BOSS (Project Manager) or Project Lead?

Because i conduct lots of organisational activities so my company's HR's would be in a better position to comment on my organisational and leadership skills... .. So can i get letters of recommendation from them.?

I would request you to guide me regarding this...

Many thanks in advance!

Dear Mr Menon,
I am a reapplicant from last year. It is mentioned in the application form that recommendations of last year could be included for the current year. Could I include one recommendation of last year and one fresh recommendation? If yes, then how do I go about it?
Thanks

Dear Mr. Menon,

My profile is:

CA rankholder passed in 1998 / B.Com H from Hindu College in Delhi
Work Experience of 11 years
Current Salary: INR 33L p.a.
Age:32 years
Married and have a kid of 3 years.

I have been working for financial planning, budgeting, US GAAP reporting and been associated with Shared services (Big MNCs) for last 6 years involved in setting up operations, stabilisation and reengineering.

I still find myself getting too very concentrated in this line and getting little opportunities to diversify with my CA degree.

Do you recommed me to apply for admissions for ISB - What are my chances of selection and will I have to take a salary cut after my completion of course at ISB for few years.

Basically will it be worthwhile for me to pursue the course at ISB or any other ivy school in US.

Thanks

Twain,

You are a good fitment for admission into any top B-school provided you apply with a decent application and essays.
If you want to change your line post MBA may be into strategy, general management etc you may have to be ready to take a hit on your salary initially. However, in a couple of years you will be doing great.

envy07,

You have a decent profile. However, GMAT is on the lower side considering the average GMAT of the current batch.

Health care options for our students earlier have been into Healthcare consulting, strategy, general management, brand management, operations, business development and other senior roles in health care management. This programme equips you with the tools and skills required to pursue a career in healthcare management. You can write to us at [email protected] to get in touch with one of our alumni from the healthcare industry.

George,

If you are getting your recos online, then we do not need any hard copies. In your case, please opt for offline evaluation for that particular evaluator.

I will suggest that you write to us at [email protected] for a feedback on your last years application. This will help you identify the weaker areas in your application and thus improve accordingly. Do not forget to mention your application reference number.

Sun-tzu,

ISB does not offer any internship. However, we offer something better the Experiential Learning Programme, which is a live consulting project you do for an organization. This programme is treated at par with internship by recruiting companies. For more details please visit http://www.isb.edu/pgp/ExperientialLearningProgramme.Shtml?menuid=106

Regarding career shift to IBanking, every year only a few students choose to do so. Please visit the link http://www.isb.edu/pgp/Placement_Highlights.Shtml?menuid=108

Mr. Sahay,

In your case, I will suggest that you retake the GMAT as it is the only current indicator of your academic potential. Since you have high work exp, you can also opt for our Executive Education if you do not wish to go for a full fledged 1 year programme.

Aditya,

Please refer to page 33 of this thread for your query no. 1 & 4.

Regarding you other queries:
2) The percentage of students opting for a career shift remains the same irrespective of the batch size.
3) We have more than 80 slots available for exchange programme with 35 business schools. Every year many slots remain unutilized. So, an increase in batch size will not affect the students.

Nirvan,

Yes, you can do that.
"If you are an applicant in 2008-09 (re-applying now) and would want to make use of your previous evaluation/s, you may do so by clicking the appropriate radio button. The application will search for the details of the previous year's evaluatior/s and automatically transfer the data to this year's application. However, this will happen only if you have chosen the option "Re-applicant" in the Applicant Information page and have filled in the "correct" Application reference number. In case you do not remember it, please obtain help from Admissions Office by writing to [email protected]."

Shiva,

Apart from leadership skills, the evaluations also highlight other aspects of work exp which only your immediate senior/colleague will be able to do. I will suggest that instead of the HR department you take your recos from your immediate senior/colleague.

Hello Admission team,

I want to know if one has to submit the proof of employement for the spouse ? Is any proof of income also required ? If yes, then is IT return necessary or employer's pay slip will suffice?

Will this fact that the spouse is employed or not have a bearing on the decision of tution waivers?

What are the criteria for deciding the eligibility for tution waivers?

Thanks a Lot.

Dear Sir,

I would like to ask you about post ISB MBA options in the Automotive space.
Basically I would be interested in roles that allow me to partake in partnership analysis - I say this because my view of the auto industry is that as more and more electronic technology is pumped in- more and more Business to business relationship management will have to take place. I would like to be involved in roles which involve analyzing companies with a techno and a commercial perspective(which is why i chose to do MBA) and thereby help in decision making on forming partnerships between companies and maintaining relationships with them(I am not sure if i can give business development as a title to this job).
In so far as ISB, i am confident of it being the right choice to pick up the right business skills and principals, what i would like to know is, are there companies (Auto OEM's, Suppliers or consulting) who offer such roles more specifically in the Automotive Technology space. I have seen the placement list and could see one Auto OEM(GM Asia Pac) that had come for placements last year.

Can you elaborate on the sort of role that was offered to the people who got placed in that particular company and also on post MBA roles in the auto sector in general.

Request views on the same.

Many thanks
Nishant Khanna
