It's back! -[2008] Ask ISB-Hyderabad: Admission Director answers your queries!

Dear sir

I am an ISB aspirant and plan to apply for 2010 admissions. I have gone through many of the posts here and thank you so much for the wealth of information. I am concerned about the practical feasibility of getting into ISB due to some of my concerns.

I have traveled through BTech, Mtech & 5.5 year job experience as of now.
My academic credentials are just average (70%),and my participation in extracurricular activities in school and college was limited or nil.

At workplace i have scaled many heights and won laurels to be proud of. I got an opportunity to discover and use my skills only after entering the Job. Now I am trying to improve myself each and everyday.

Sir, I want to know the impact of the average student rating i had during my study time on my chances of winning the ISB seat.

regards
NTN

Nitin,

We advice you to score a good GMAT score which will compensate for your average academics.

Admissions Team

Hi Team ISB,

Thankyou so much for you continued support, in resolving our queries, how small they might be.

I would have 6 years full time work exp,in Retail operations & Marketing by april 2009.Parallelly i have earned some valuable experience during 3 seperate occasions as a Faculty of Management Practice( visting Faculty) in a Premiere College of India(My alma Mater).I took classes on Retail Management for a trimester on these three occasions.I would like to understand, how does ISB value such exposures/experiences.Should these experiences be counted as work exp( part time) while entering the professional experience column in the application form.If not would it be counted as Extra curriculars.?

Hope to hear from the team,
Warm Regards

Hi AdCom,

Of the international students (non Indian passport holders) how many are of Indian origin?

Does the assessment criteria for international students differ from that of local students?

As I understand, international students have a rolling admission period (no round 1 or round 2 cut offs), is an international student disadvantaged by applying later than earlier in the admission period.

Is there a specific number of places reserved for international students?

Cheers,

Somebol

Sir,

I have submitted my application in R1.

I have good acads - distinction holder through out. I assumed that ISB would know that a % more than 70% in Bachelors/Masters means distinction. Is that a fair assumption?

Thanks

Somebol,

1) We will not be in a position to give you this number right now as the admission cycle is still going on.

2) The assessment criteria remains the same for both - international as well as local applicants.

3) No, there is no such disadvantage.

4) There are no reservations of any kind. The admissions are only merit based.

Admissions Team

Thank you Team ISB for the clarification of my earleir query.

In continuation of my query-i further seek certain clarifications to be absolutely sure of the process.

Along with my Regular full time employment, i have earned Nine Months of Part time work ex(Teaching exp with a premiere Institute) spread across three different stints, each stint being 1 trimester long,3 months duration, 2006-2008.

My query is-while filling the form,The exp have to be entered as 3 different work experiences, Even though they were with the same Educational College( Spread across Its 2 branches viz Delhi & Chennai) or can the exp be consolidted and entered as 1 single exp.

I have an additional query.

Keeping the Global Scenario in mind, what extra measures does ISB take to ensure a healthy Ratio of Male:Female participants, the way other international schools do?

Since the selection is based on host of parameters,Are women candidates given any additional points/leverage in any of the parameters in selection process to aid their admission and hence ensuring a health mix of students.for eg a women candidate getting an interview invite at a GMAT score lesser than the avg GMAt score of male candidates.

I understand that women candidates need to enter their Class X marks in the application form, wherein the male candidates are not required to do so,any specific reasons for that?

In the Current batch the Female:Male ratio is 1:3( someone kindly corecct me incase i have quoted wrong figures), is it possible to provide a break up Avg GMAT score of Female:Male candidates:Entire Batch Average to give a clearer picture.

Hope to hear soon

I have around 22 months experience in two slots (16+6) in my family business apart from additional 60 months in different professional organization (for which I have proof like salary, experience letter etc.). For 22 month family business, I have experience certificate from my father who is the owner of the business. Will this suffice? Please respond soon as I want to apply as soon as possible.

Hi Brandmanager,

One quick correction.
For class of 2009, the ratio was 24/76. That actually makes it 1:3.

Rohan,

We do not need any certificate from your father. We only require two recos preferably from your clients.

Sachin,

We have repeatedly mentioned in this thread that you can compensate for your below average academics with a very good GMAT score.

Admissions Team

Sir,

I am planning to apply in R2. I have few queries

1. How will I know that my GMAT score has reached ISB before the application deadline?

2. What is the role of the applicant current salary, is bigger salary viewed positively.

3. In your admission brochure, you have given the GMAT range of current batch as 580-780, is it true that the GMAT can be as low as 580. What kind of profile can compensate low GMAT.

Thank you.

You will not be able to mention your teaching exp in the current employment details. Please explain it in the Optional essay.
ISB carries out a lot of outreach activities to increase the number of women students. These include visits to various women colleges across the country and educating them about the value of a management programme. We also conduct outreach programme with companies that are known to have a higher ratio of women. We are not sure about what other b-schools are doing.
Women applicants are required to upload their X class mark sheet only because that is a pre-requisite for the Novartis scholarship (only for women).
The women applicants are at no significant advantage because of their gender. There is no compromise in terms of quality of students admitted to the programme.

Admissions Team
Vsriv,

It is important to understand the process before one tries to interpret the result. The alumni recommended rank does not indicate how many of our alumni recommend our school to others. This question asks our alumni to list 3 b-schools from where they will recruit. Then based on the number of votes received by each school the rank is determined. Therefore this rank is not the reflection of our alumni but reflection on what alumni of other schools think. Given that most schools are in the US they would prefer US based school to cast their votes for. Therefore you will find most Asian school with a low rank. It is also affected by the size of the intake which was low for ISB for the class that was surveyed.

Value for money rank is also a function of the purchasing power parity and that is what is reflected in the rank.

The aims achieved rank is not as low. The class surveyed had graduated 4 years back when ISB was very new. The school evolves over time and things are much better now.

Please note that ISB, just a 7 year old school, competed with schools with 150 years of history. Additionally the class surveyed graduated when ISB was only 3 years old. We feel it is no mean achievement. We know we have some ground to cover and are working on it. I hope you will be a part of this history making school.

Students cannot audit courses at ISB.

Admissions Team

Thank you, admissions team.
My question about the bidding system wasn't answered; but I suppose it can wait until such time (if and when) I get into ISB πŸ˜ƒ
