Ivey Mba

might sound foolish, but, I did not send transcripts and an additional copy of resume through post. Does the ivey adcom sends an email if they find something like this missing from the application or they just quietly keep such applications aside?
Problem is that unlike several other bschool online applications, ivey online application system does not mention the application status/stage. It just says the application has been submitted.

Hi,
You can email them scanned copies of ur transcripts before sending them thru post. Note that they require 2 transcripts. Also thr is no need to send an additional copy of resume if already emailed...Somebody from Ivey does contact if anything is missing though!

Jainesh
Hi,
When did you submit the online application? I submitted on 6th Oct but no updates from Ivey as of now.I guess they are waiting for the 2nd round to end on 6th Nov.

Hi Jainesh,
Do you know if everybody is called for 2 interviews at Ivey?
I had my first one, and I think i didn't do that well, i sort of screwed up in failure example, and a few other questions. So i am wondering if there is any point in waiting for the second one.
I was not told about it at the end of the first interview, which has been the case for many other people on this forum.

Regards,
Jainesh

Hi Nitesh,

Can you tell me the questions you were asked in the interview? I have mine scheduled tomorrow

Hey Guys,

I had my ivey Round-1 intw on 10th Dec. haven't heard from them since.
Meanwhile I got an admit from Rotman and Michigan Broad

Completed my interview just now, Most of the questions were usual questions, except one question - "How would the class describe you at the end of the MBA program? use three words" This question just stumped me and I was lost in words. She did not mention that I will get another interview call. I was told that I will get notified about the decision in 3 -4 weeks. Not sure what will happen, I feel I might have screwed 😞

I am done with both interviews. Questions were similar to the ones posted by several members on this thread and to the ones on accepted.com.

With the holidays around the corner, I don't expect any updates on my status till the second week of January. The wait, of course, will be a killer.
But I've been there and done that before...so no biggie...

Not too optimistic about my chances with the surge in the applications.

Good Luck to everyone.

Guys, update from my side:

I've finally managed to get a 20 Lakh loan sanctioned by the Corporation Bank. Here's an excerpt from my blog, about the loan application process and I hope that prospective candidates find this informative.

--------
For international students, its almost impossible to find a loan in Canada, presently. One needs to posses a permanent resident-ship status, or at least have a Canadian Citizen willing to cosign the loan. Ivey does recommend international students to arrange for the funds in their home countries.

Having thoroughly researched various processes of banks, and compared the rates of interest and the guarantor requirements, Ive decided to avail the loan from Corporation Bank of India. These Interest rates are decided by the Banks themselves, based on various factors recommended by Reserve Bank of India such as the Cash Reserve Ratio. Each Bank has its own prime lending rate (technically they call it BPLR or Benchmark Prime Lending rate) and the interest rate is arrived at using the BPLR(+ or -), which changes from time to time. At present, Canara Bank offers for the least interest rate (11% p.a.). However, they do need a guarantor who can cosign the loan, in addition to pledging a collateral security. Guarantor is required to be a working member and some banks do insist that guarantor be creditworthy (at least equal to the loan amount). On the other hand, Corporation Bank offers at 11.5% p.a. and there is no guarantor requirement. As long as one can manage the collateral, he is eligible to apply for the education loan. In my case, Ive decided to pledge my Fathers house that is expected to have a value at least twice as that of the loan amount. He would also act as the guarantor.

Submitting the application papers was not as easy as I had originally expected. It took me almost 2.5 hours to fill in just the application form. Found things tough when gathering support documentation, especially the ones that involved Government Officials for documents such as the certificate of encumbrance. Managed to complete my part (paper work) within 2 working days. Thanks to my Father who had been organizing and archiving all sorts of papers from land documents to electricity bills. Bank authorities were more than helpful and patient enough to answer my concerns and queries.

Typically, the following documents are required to apply for an education loan in India:

1. Completed Loan Application Form
2. Address proof (Ration Card, Bank statements, Telephone Bills should do)
3. Proof of Date of Birth.
4. Degree certificates, transcripts and mark sheets (Class X, Class XII, Graduate Degree)
5. Proof of occupation of Parent/ pension certificates; Guarantors proof of income (salary slip or pension statements if retired)
6. Copy of passport and driving license
7. Passport sized photos
8. GMAT score report
9. Admission letter from University
10. Cost of Study/living expenses. Preferably an official letter.
11. Proof of funds for the remainder of expenses requirement (the amount that is not fulfilled by the loan). This amount is termed as Margin. If the cost of program+ living expenses is Rs. 45 Lakhs, and the loan applied for is Rs. 20 Lakhs, then margin is Rs. 25 Lakhs. This proof may be in terms of savings, investments/bonds, loan from Family/friends/employer, etc.
12. Employment contract, if any,
13. One would also need to state the expected income/expenditure statement, post-MBA. This is essential to calculate the percentage of EMI to repayment ability.
14. Proof of collateral securities. In case of house property, following are needed:

  1. Land/House documents
  2. Parent document of the land/house, if possible
  3. Certificate of encumbrance on property (from date of purchase till date)
  4. Plan approvals by Government
  5. Property tax, Water, Electricity bills/receipts
  6. Re-conveyance certificate (this is required if there had been any previous loans on the same collateral)
  7. Past legal opinions, if any.

--------

Am about to begin my research on the visa process.
Good luck to those who got interview calls. Wish you could convert them to admits.

Thanks a lot man!!! Hope to be in similar position in few months!!
I am in the last leg of my application... hope to finish it off by Jan 09!

Regards
Arul

Folks, Any admits or Rejects so far? Please update.

Got an email today to inform me that the decision would take another 2weeks as the admission committee wont meet anytime sooner.
I was interviewed in Dec and had requested an earlier decision.
Hope that calms some nerves.

Thanks Nitesh_pec.
I'm a new user to the site - 670/IT Male and Indian with about 11 years of experience and solid extra curriculars. (i've been part of bands and play guitar and sing) Speak portuguese fluently and have learnt french for 2 years.
I just finished my interview and did decently - she mentioned a lead time of 2-3 weeks. Is this a normal time between interviews 1 and 2?
Thanks and good luck to all!

HI Dingthon (funny )
Yeah there is 2-3 weeks delay in the interviews, unless you have some very important reason to rush it (for eg. deposit deadline for other school, visa issues, visiting school early, etc.)
Good luck with it.

Yeah - already dinged by 3 schools (Interviewed by INSEAD and then dinged) so I think i might have a jinx. - i'm using some reverse psychology (on who though isn't very clear :))
In hind-sight I felt I did average in the interviews after going through my answers post interview. Does the lack of a second interview indicate a ding? How do they typically communicate rejects? Sorry for the morose topic.

Chill man,
Don,t start worrying about the Ding, Whatever happens, happens for good. You gave your best shot, thats all it matters. The road to MBA is pretty twisted and after MBA its even more twisted.
Luck and timing plays a big role.
A lot of my friends would be graduating in 2009. They had never imagined the market to be so bad when they started. So i guess you can only control things at your end. So yeah again, relax and enjoy your the good predictable days before MBA with assured salary and laid back life.

Nitesh - that is a grounded reply. Thanks buddy.
Yeah, i've been trying to stay upbeat. Got my request for a second interview today (it mentioned that Ivey may do upto 3 interviews.. ?) This is still adcom so maybe they've given me a second chance :1eye: Better not flubb this one huh?

Hi All,

This is a great thread and an invaluable resource. Thanks to all the contributing members.

I am an Admit to Ivey Spring '09.

I also have admits from Schulich and Queens. Didn't consider Rotman because of the program duration. And now is the time for me to make a decision. Ahhhhhh..

I have gone through the whole cycle ( speaking with alumni, current students, career mgmt etc). I have a few questions reg. Ivey and any inputs from you guys will be greatly appreciated.

- I haven't heard of many Indian IT folks who have been able to break into consulting. Based on what I have heard, looks like all IITs get back into IT jobs at the end of the job search. Is this right or am I just misinformed?
- I know IB as a functional area doesn't exist anymore. Canadian banks have reduced their intake considerably, though not to the extent that US banks have. Given that Bay Street is such a small place, how has this affected recruitment?
- I did read somewhere that about 50% of the class that will be graduating in Apr '09 has already been successful in procuring employment. What has this number been historically? And what's this number been for international students? What percent of the international student population finds employment before the program ends?
- Amongst the students already placed, how has the compensation varied from its historical levels? What kind of increase/decrease is being noticed?
- Does anyone have any other information that quantifies how the economic downturn has affected recruitment?

I am sure you guys have done your research on diff bschools in Canada? Brand value aside, how do the other schools compare in terms of their ability to place international students in the jobs of their choice?

Hope to get a meaningful and informative dialog started here.

Good points iPityTheFool. Better to be ready than being pittied by like fools later. Congratulations on getting in at Ivey. I have applied to both queen and Ivey and am awaiting results from both, but I feel that Ivey is the hardest program to get admission in Canada.

Although what you are looking is on the ground info. But whatever I have read on net , I feel that Ivey offers the best job prospect as compared to queen or rotman.
Now that you have to take a decision, what r u leaning more towards - Queen or Ivey. Did u get any schol at any. Could u post ur profile

Congratulations on the admits. Have fun juggling between the offers/ evaluating the options, and making the decision..

The first two questions that you have asked can be best answered by current students, who have been in the job hunt grind as recently as in the last couple of months. The placement ratios for international students are listed in the employment reports for the last two years; you should again talk to current students to see how the numbers stand under the current scenario.

Re: Increase/decrease in compensation levels- I would pay more attention to the job profile/type of job you are looking at. Honestly, salaries should be the least of the worries under the present circumstances- if you are taking a loan, focus on a "break even" number (break even =gross pay-taxes-cost of living-loan repayment- savings for India trips, etc.) first. Then, look at the median base pay for the sector/industry of your post-MBA career. Use the 2008 numbers as a benchmark, assume you will get 90% of the median (I am not under-estimating your earning ability here, just trying to be conservative).

If this number is greater than your break even number, then you need not worry. Once things pick up, you can re-assess the salary part.

More pertinent questions to focus on:

a. What sector(s) are still hiring/expected to hire in the coming year? Am I willing to focus on those sectors? What is my employability in that sector?
b. What is my plan B, in case (a) does not work for me (for whatever reasons)
c. How much effort am I willing to make to focus on networking from now itself? Networking would be the key in the present circumstances.
d. Am I better off staying put at my current job (if employed) and defer my admission by upto an year, in case?

good luck!
