Ivey Mba

Hi Satya, I have 10 yrs exp in IT , but i got only 640 in GMAT . DO u think i stand a chance with this gmat score
-Suki

I have got an admit for the April 2010 intake. Looking to send in my acceptance to ivey in a week's time.

I have benefited a lot from the discussions here but never contributed. Thought will start with a first post and will be a good way to get in touch with April 2010 ivey colleagues.

Schools applied to (3)
IESE (Spain) - Reject
IE (Spain) - Admit
Ivey (canada) - Admit

It was at first difficult to pass the IE admit with its high rankings in FT. But the European union (strict control) and potential language issues (Spanish) made me think twice.

I got very good vibes about Ivey looking at its Ivey career services as well as the feed back of current students. Visa (post-MBA) is almost a non-issue in Canada. I went through a couple of Management Consulting firms websites and all the big firms definitely recruit from Ivey.

Profile:
Good acads, GMAT: 730/5.5, average extra-curriculars, 4 yrs work ex (5 yrs before MBA start)

gallahad, how did you manage to apply for the April 2010 in take? I registered myself for the Ivey Inside Track, but the message I see is that the applications for April 2010 intake will open on June 30th.

Hey GMATsure 76.. Go ahead and apply... dont worry about scores... you have loads of experience with you tell... there are a lot of students in class with experience in excess of 8 years..IVEY does give weightage to work-ex to account for the not-so-excellent GMAT scores.. work a lot on your essays.. and if you have international exposure, do highlight them..
Do let me know if i will be of help in the process..

Hey Satya,
Does Ivey require a TOEFL score? English has been my "first language" in school from day one, but I am not sure if Ivey's understanding of "first language" is the same as "native" language.

This is the text from their instructions PDF:

"An applicant who studied in English (i.e. India, Hong Kong, Pakistan, etc.), but whose first language is not English is not exempt from this requirement."

Can you throw some light on this?

Thanks!

Hi gallahad,

I too have been offered an April 2010 admission, and will be sending my deposit in the next couple of weeks. My stats - 730 gmat, average extra curriculars but strong community work, almost 4 years experience (little less than 5 by the time the mba starts).

Looks like we will be in the same class now...

mbazing, I would like to know how you managed to apply for the April 2010 intake. I registered for the Ivey MBA Inside track and only the 2009 sessions are available. Moreover, the message from the adcom indicates that the applications for 2010 open after June 30th.

Thanks!.

Hi GBH
I applied to the Fall 2009 intake. But I had specified my Post-MBA career interests in consulting. When I was interviewed I let the adcom and the career services know that I am open to taking up the April 2010 intake.
Since the consulting recruitment is inline with April intake I guess the adcom thought it was sensible to offer for April 2010 intake and I told them i am not ready for 2009 may intake.

So I guess you should apply for whichever is the intake which is open now and then when you are interviewed communicate your preference.

@GBH... if you have studied in India with english as your medium of instruction throughout your education, then you can be exempted from writing TOEFL. I have not written TOEFL. You can write to the ADCOM to exempt you from the requirement., if you want to.

if you have a decent verbal score in GMAT , your medium of instruction is English throughout your education and if you are working in some MNCs ( as in india the corporate language is normally english), it should not be a problem to get a waiver..at the same time , TOEFL is not at all a difficult exam. it does not take more than a week of preparation.. if you are already done with your GMAT and the application deadlines for most of the b schools are still there, it is always preferrable to be equipped with a TOEFL/ IELTS score..depends on your preference.

@Gallahad, thanks. That explains. I guess I will try to apply asap.

@Satya, thanks for the info. I have a 38 verbal in GMAT. But I have been living in Germany for the past 7 years, so a TOEFL waiver may be difficult to get. Anyway, I will schedule the TOEFL test in the coming days.

Hello Suki,

Well, just saw your post. Don't worry about the score. I have the same score of 640 and work ex of 4+ years and I have a secured admit for April 2009 deferred to April-2010.

Hence don;t worry about your score, just write off your essays well and let's hope u make it in here.

Regards,
Anubhav
Hey Anubhav,
good to see you here... seems like a decent crowd from india...hope to find some more in days to come...!!

It s good that you all got in early and assured of your plans next year !! Do let me know or PM me if you require any help...

financing you study is an issue...but if you are going to become an MBA , you will do much more financing ... this is a good starting point...Loans in canada are cheap.. but you can get that only when you complete your course and get a Permanent Residency status here.. If you can arrange some money from some personal sources, you should go ahead...because you can refinance that after coming to canada and getting a really low cost - loan here..You have a lot of time to figure out all the avenues now...try researching some on the web .. cost of living is very low in London.. It is only the tuition fees that forms the biggest part of your expense..Calculate your total expense accordingly and plan for it..

Hey guys, I also got admit offer for the September 2009 class.

Hey guys, I also got admit offer for the September 2009 class.

Hi Premprakash133
congraats!!! so u taking the september intake OR u deferring to spring 2010?

Hi Gallahad,
i have deffered it to May 2010. Actually there were 2 reasons for that:

1. I'm still managing to get the funding part closed.
2. The May cohort is always on the better side in placements as compared to the September cohort, because of the employemnt-cycle factor in Canada. (Most of the consultancies hire the May chort passouts).

What about you? Are you joining the September or May?

I've deffered to the session starting April 2010.

i am joining April 2010 as well.
cheers

I had sent my resume to Ivey for free assessment and got a positive feedback on it. Just curious if Ivey actually puts a genuine effort in evaluating a resume or it gives postive feedback to most of the applicants which encourages them for applying to Ivey.

Hi Guys

I have been a silent observer of this forum. I have to say that the forum has helped me in more ways than one.
Received an admit call on Monday from Niki Healy
Extremely excited about meeting all you guys!!!

@MBAckstage...hello... good to know that you are interested in Ivey !! i am a current student .. in fact just joined this year and couple of weeks into the course..I could meet many people from may cohort and sep cohort...it seems the placement in may cohort is quite good...considering the current economic condn.. and comparing with other schools in North america.. around 40 to 50 from a class of 70 have a job offer..i have to give you a range because there are some who are yet to confirm the offers..there are some people who are going back to their own business and some are starting something by themselves.. so overall it s a decent scene..with most of the international students landing with an offer ... the significant thing here is that the quality of jobs are really good...( unlike just placements , they are quality placements)BUt the scene with the september cohort is not that bright.. only few people have an offer in hand now.. it is because they are in a different recruiting cycle.. most finance and consulting companies here recruit in september, which comes in the middle for may..but at the end for sep cohort...hope you understand...the best thing is that the students here are not worried about this and they feel that there is all chance that each of them will get exposed to good opportunities..do let me know if you need any specific info on ivey or anything related to this.

Hi Satya,
I have been following this thread as a silent observer and I have found it very helpful. Targeting Spring 2010 at Ivey.

Since you are a current student and I would like to you a question.
Do you have students in your batch who intend to return to their pre-MBA organizations although in a different role?
Some what like on a sabbatical or study leave which will lead to a steeper career trajectory in their current organization.

Also how would competitive do you think my profile is.
GMAT 660, AWA 5.0, Almost of work experience 7 years by start of program.
Worked in Indian IT major in purely non technical, business roles/customer facing roles. 3 years of international experience in three different countries. Presently in Canada. Poor extra curricular's.

Thanks for the help you are providing on this forum.

Hey ctarafdar,
Thanks for your comments. For your 1st Q, we have lots of people in our class who intend to go bck to their old organization. Many of them belong to banking or consulting industry , even tech,..So they have just taken a study leave and are still "technically" working for their companies in their pay rolls...If you want specific examples i can email you their mail ids....

For Q2, i feel you are absolutely a perfect mix for Ivey..if you think Ivey as one of your Top choices, dont apply to too many univs b4 going through the Ivey selection process.. Spend some time on writing the essays and get your Ivey application done before the actual rush hour for applications start ...Try to reflect all your experiences properly in the essays..i can help you if you need any..

GOOD LUCK !!

Hi premprakash!!!

I have an Ivey admit for spring 2010. Just wanted to clarify a few doubts

In the offer letter it is mentioned that I have to send across a check of $5000 alongwith the pledge to Ivey. I have a few queries
1. The amount of $5000 is in terms of Canadian dollars or US dollars.
2. Is this amount subtracted from our tuition fees
3. Roughly how much extra do banks charge for preparing a cheque in dollars.

Thanks and Regards
