Ivey Mba

Hello Friends,

First, I would like to congratulate all of you, who have got admission.
Well, I am also looking forward to getting admission at Ivey for spring 2009, but unlike you guys my profile is not that strong. I have submitted my application on 31st August.
I have got GMAT score only 620 with Quant 49 Verbal 26 AWA 5.5.
I have done BE from Punjab Technical University and ME from Anna University, Chennai and currently I am working with General Electric at Singapore. I have total 7 years of experience in manufacturing related Industries. Before joining GE, I was working with Siemens.

As I am working at Singapore, so I was not able to send my transcripts from India and I have sent the photocopies of my original marks sheets and certificates. I dont know whether they will consider my application or not.

As you guys have got admission, can anyone of you tell me with this low score in GMAT is there any chance for me to get admission at Ivey?

Bobby

Doosrakeval & Demandez,

Do you guys have any plans of visiting Ivey ? And other thing which i would like to know is... How feasible is it to start an Internship with BCG or Monitor before MBA ? if yes,what is the success ratio (should you have the details..)

thanks

yes I'm planning to visit Ivey. I've got my tourist visa stamped. i'll be visiting both Ivey and Queens. i'll make sure to post my campus visit experience. To answer your second question, I have no idea about the success ratio. But one thing I can assure you is that it isn't going to be that easy. i'll speak with career services rep while on campus and would let you know then.

JFYI, i'll be visiting either last week Sept or 1st week Oct.

Dear Mr Bobby,

Don't feel low. I think you have a very good profile. GMAT is the measure of your preparation for the exam not the measure of your ability/profile. The more number of hours you spend practicing GMAT questions, the better your score will be. Still GMAT goes a long way in making a good first impression, not only during the admission but also in recruitment. If you feel that your score does not truly represents your aptitude, you can always re-take it.

FYI I haven't got the offer yet. Well Ivey does say that they prefer students with a GMAT of 660 plus, but I don't think that they have any hard n fast rule about it. They'll definitely consider your application. If you get an interview call.. make sure you prepare well and cover up the gap.

Make sure you have a clear idea where you are heading, why Ivey and what from ivey. try to recollect some experiences from teamwork( good n bad) etc..

All the best..lemme know if you need any info.

Regarding transcripts, don't take any chances, ASAP write to Ms. Niki about it.

I have gone thru this thread reading all abt Ivey.

My brief profile is GMAT 700. 4.5 years of Work ex (IT industry, India), all other stuff being decent.

I am specifically looking for a 1 year MBA program. Ivey looks a very strong program to me and I am considering to go for it.

My major concern is the financing part of the MBA. As per Ivey's website, it takes almost 90K US dollars (around 40 lakhs) for the Ivey MBA

Also, quoting "demandez" in this thread:
""2. Financing - Canadian banks don't lend internationals that are not landed immigrants (i.e. those who don't hold the permanent resident-ship status). Indian banks offer upto 20lakhs. You would easily need another 20-25 lakhs to finance the Ivey MBA. ""

I would be solely dependent on loans for financing my MBA. So if 20 lakhs is the loan given by an Indian bank and 20-25 I have to arrange myself, then i shud better forget Ivey.

I heard for US Bschools, ppl were able to secure loans for full amount.

Can somebody shed information on the financing part and if loans can be arranged for the full amount.

This information would be extremely helpful to me in deciding whether i shud even think about Ivey.

Thanx a lot
- idream

Thanks doosraKeval,

Well have you applied for Ivey, if yes, then have you got call for interview?

Can you give me some idea, how long they take to reply for success of an application? and do they send any intimation that the application is failure?

For me the main problem is time, my work schedule is too tight, no time for study. I appeared for GMAT without any prepration. I have to work 12 hours a day and almost 6 days a week. So I know this was my best shot for GMAT.

Now I am looking for admission with this low score only.

All the best for your trip to Ivey, Do let me know about ur experience.

Regards

Bobby

Hey Pushing_hard.
I don't have plans to visit Ivey until May when I Start the programme :)
I've not much idea about the success ratio either. Further, there's no information available on the pre MBA internship for the upcoming cohorts, yet. I shall let you guys know, should I get any info.

Hey Bobby,
If you are genuinely interested in Ivey, I dont think your GMAT score should stop you from applying. Try to highlight your international experiences, non IT Experience(which is a good differentiator for you, being an Indian Applicant), and your huge work experience.

And I dont expect your transcripts photocopies to cause any trouble. Am sure that the Ivey adcom are considerate. Do make sure to send them an explanatory note.

Financing is a huge question of concern for Indian applicants. Ive heard from the Director of Financial Aid that Ivey's been trying to negotiate loans for international students. Unfortunately, none exist at this time. If you could manage a US cosigner, I dont think you should have much problem(You can explore options such as IEFC or Paras foundation).

Some US schools do guarantee loans without co-signer. You may want to explore them as well.

Hi Guys,
Even I have started preparing my essays for the Fall 2009 cohort. Can anybody advise if Ivey is strict about the 250 word limit for essays. Coz mine easily exceeds 250 words.
Also dont worry about racism issues in Canada. I was in Toronto for almost an year and had no such problems. Their's is a very accepting society.

I'm done with my interviews. I got an interview call approx. after 4 weeks. I hope you'll also get the call.

Good Luck buddy!

Hello Doosrakeval

I got an interview call from Ivey. It has been fixed with Ms.Jenni, an ad com member. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Who took you interview?

Did they ask you for second interview? or at what stage you are right now? have you cleared everything?

Hi ALL

I have just received an interview call from Ivey Canada for their May 2009 session. I have been lucky in the sense that they sent me an interview call within 8 days of submission of my application (I submitted on September 1. 2008, last day for round 1).

I have been called for both a personal interview followed by a telephonic round.

If anybody hass already given the interview for IVEY, please inform me about the things I should focus on in the interview, personal and telephonic.

My profile is as follows:

GMAT : 710
Exp: 4+ years
Academics: 67% in B.Com (h) from Hansraj college, DU
Okay extra curricular : some volunteering acts at animal hospitals, and other NGO and freelance writing for an established lifestyle magazine and other projects

Would really appreciate your response to my post

Thanks

JD

Hi JD,
Welcome to PG and Congratulations on your interview call.
Please scan through this thread and previous year's Ivey MBA thread, where people have posted numerous interview experiences.

Thanx demandez for ur perspective on financing options.

I have a specific question:

Acc to u, what cud be the approx cost of the complete MBA prog at Ivey for Spring 2009 (tution + academic + living + other expenses)? The data(CND $ 96800) on the website is for Spring 2008.

I want to get this estimate so that I can plan the schools accordingly. INSEAD, IE etc also have the similar expenses (USD $100K). If there is not a substantial in the expenses, then i might also consider applying to these schools too. (Though, arranging the finance the MBA is still a big issue for me).

Also, i did visit the PARAS foundation website. It looks good on the site. But I want to ask what is the success rate of getting loan from it. Considering a US co signer is there, how easy or difficult it is to get a loan from them and what are the important factors in the process.

Thanx a lot for inputs. You are helping a lot of people, which is gr8.

Hi idream,
While am unable to comment on the actual expenses yet, here's a BLOATED estimate of how it could be. This is the worst possible case and I would argue that these numbers will come down drastically. I've heard from current students that a $100,000 should be more than sufficient, if you are single. And an additional $5000, if you are married.

Anyway, here it goes.

Tuition for international students=75000 ($72000 last year. I don't have the tuition fee information for 2009, yet)
Ancillary Fees=500
MBAA Student Fee=900
UHIP(Health insurance)=700
Casebooks and Supplies=5000
MBA Clubs=200
Note Book Computer=1500(You can also get decent notebooks for $1000)
Monthly Rent=800/month*13=10400
Utilities=80/month*13=1040
Food=500/month*13=6500
Entertainment=150/month*13=1950
Clothing=125/month*13=1625
Telephone=100/month*13=1300
Bus Pass=100/month*13=1300
Miscellaneous=100/month*13=1300
Laundry=50/month*13=650
Home Internet/Mobile phone=70/month*13=910
International Study Trip=3000
Air Fare=2000
Contingency Funds=2000
Dress Materials=475
Business Attire=475
Mobile Phone=150

Total = $118875

*I've assumed length of program as 13 months (*including pre MBA, Orientation, settling time, etc)
*All the numbers mentioned above are in $CAD

I did speak to Paras foundation and they said, its possible to arrange 65 lakh INR if I could manage a US cosigner. But I don't have any further details on them.

Following is the response that I received from a recent Ivey graduate , on the estimated expenses mentioned above.

=========================================
Major costs are ok.
But few things you are over estimating for example: rent if you are living alone then it will be 700$ per month including utilities, but if you will be living with some one then it will be 500$/month including utilities. Laundry will be around 25$ per month.Home phone is not required mobile is gud enough. Get a decent mobile phone from india apart from CDMA. Get books from india and that ways yu can reduce ur expenses by1000$. Get clothes from india.

Hi demandez,

Thanx a lot for the heads up on the cost front.

Now I can plan the things more clearly.

Which city are u from? I am from Bangalore.
