Ivey Mba

Well looks like the Ivey admissions team is still hard at work. Got a phonecall today with an admit for the 2011 session. They didn't say it outright, but i'm pretty sure it's because i'm short on work experience. Probably works out better.. gives me 1 more year to boost the resume and then some time to go travelling somewhere before school starts up.

Time to party up on the weekend!!

Congratulations!!

Definitely party it up this weekend!!! And hey..look at it this way, once you graduate in 2012, the economy will be in MUCH better shape then in the next year or so, which wil be great for getting placed by Ivey....good job!
MBAblackbelt

you will get an interview call, Ivey takes interview of almost all applicants before sending them accept/ding. Well Admission committee is coming to singapore, because I got an email stating " Exclusive Invite for a dinner with Ivey admission director at Singapore" on 24 Nov.

It means admission committee is busy on visiting places. Moreover, the deadline is 6th Dec, so they will definitely process your application before that...

All the best

Bobby

Hi bobby,

First of all, I wanna thank you for taking the time to comfort me and give me some hope.

Second of all, does Ivey stick to their deadline all the time? or have they delayed even after their deadline until they could decide the fate of applicants? The reason I'm saying this is that today is the 24th of November, while the final decision date is the 6th of December. My sad reality is that I STILL haven't received an interview invite, and there's hardly any time left for me to be interviewed AND receive their decision in such a short space of time (if they do follow their deadlines religiously). I honestly have lost hope to tell you the truth.

Congrats!

This is the second time I've heard of this happening to someone during this app cycle...interesting. What are the stipulations of such an offer? What if someone in your position (and NE1 else on here who has received deferred acceptance) takes the next year off, for example? What I mean is, are they expecting you to fulfill some sort of experience requirement over the next year?

Thanks!

No clue if there are any conditions on the admission. I actually was stuck in a meeting when they called.. so i just got a quick message telling me further information would be in the mail.

I have just over two years of work experience right now.. so i'm assuming they'd want me to work until the program starts. I'm going to see if they'd be alright with me putting in another year which would give me a chance to get some travelling done early in 2011. (In other words, I'm just looking for an excuse to escape another western canadian winter!)

If you could let us know once you get the details, that would be great!

With regards to winter - it's all in your attitude 😉 There are tons of fun things to do in Canada during the winter!

Thanks!

This forum has been a big help.. so i'll be glad to provide details once i get them.

As for the winter.. I love being able to hit the Rockies. I love the fact that hockey season is in full swing. I'm just not a fan of the three weeks of -40 temperatures that has been tradition in Calgary for as long as I can remember! As a born and raised Albertan.. I'm totally down for a January/February that involves palm trees and sunshine... not 8 feet of snow!
Thanks!

Honestly, it would be better for you to have one more year experience before join the program, given you just have 2 years. Ivey is case study based, the more experience you have, the more you could share with your classmates and the more you could learn from them. Something if you've never experienced, you could not understand.

Yeah I tend to agree with the experience part in retrospect. That said, the classes I took in my last two years of my Commerce degree were 90% case based.. so i'm really familiar with that format.

Blackbelt - I suggest that you take your mind off Ivey for the time being and use the week end to completely immerse yourself in another application. Time till the 15th of December is worth its weight in gold for MBA admissions. I know how you feel - I've been there myself and its difficult to come to terms with the fact that you might be rejected.....I say - so what !! life goes on and you too will find success eventually...just keep up the fight. Take care buddy.

I got a mail from Ivey..I have been waitlisted....

You have a really strong profile. And it surprises me to see that you have been wait listed. Have they confirmed any date by which they will confirm a decision?
I have also been wait listed and am waiting to hear from Ivey.

Hi Ctarafdar. Are you applying to any other colleges ? Thanks.

only to texas A&M; ... i am held back by a really low GMAT and lack of time to prepare again 😃

I have spoken to many adcom members across colleges and the GMAT score - while important is one component. Look at it this way - you were good enough to get waitlisted - so in effect you ALMOST made it. I think you should apply to other colleges in Canada as well - like York (Schulich) and UBC. Don't see how you could loose. I really hope things work out for you.

I received an email from Ivey today. I have been dinged without an interview. My Ivey journey ends here, but I will apply again next year. I have sent them an email asking them for areas of improvement and will take it from there.

Thanks man. I really appreciate your support. I honestly believe that it must be my GMAT score. I scored 590 on my GMAT, but I was hoping that coming from the hotel industry would make me a unique applicant. However, I guess the minimum GMAT score can never get compromised. So I will sit for the exam again in few months and I hope I can achieve the required score.

Sorry to hear MBABlackbelt. At least you asked them for areas of improvement which shows you have a lot of inteerest in the program. I also know that when you re-apply, you are in a better situation to be accepted b/c that really shows your interest in the program to the adcom members.

If you sit the exam again and can bump up your score to 650+, you will be in Ivey in no time, or any other great MBA program for that matter.
ATB!!

thanks tdadic84. I will have to attend a gmatprep course. I'll sign up for the veritas gmat prep, which seems to be really good in toronto. I hope that can help bumb up my score.

did you know anyone who reapplied to ivey and got accepted? how do you know that reapplicants are in a better situation? i'm just curious to know.

thanks man

I personally do not know anyone, but I am 100% sure I saw a post by an adcom member on either an Ivey blog or Ivey FB group a while ago (maybe over a year ago) and they said in an interview that re-applicants have a slight advantage b/c it really shows they want to attend the school.

All MBA programs want people that want to be there, and there is nothing that shows how bad you want it then getting a ding, and then re-applying in a years time.

I am sure it will all work out for you and probably for the better. Thats how life is when you put in the work. BEST OF LUCK:)

Good for you for planning to re-apply. The world is a bitch and the best thing to do is pick yourself up and get right back to kicking ass and taking names.

Here is a video about reapplying with some good advice from admin peeps from various U.S. schools - YouTube - bschooltalk's Channel
