hey...
Looks like i m the the first official PGP1 of the 2011 batch to be posting here. Today is my 4th day on the GIM campus and already our daily routines have taken a tumble. briefly here is what happened in the past few days :
day 1 (13th june): the hostel allocation day...
people started coming as early as 6.30am:shock: in the hopes of getting to choose the best room available (i wud like to shamelessly admit that i was the 1st one to be here). This was an open opportunity for the guys to enter the LH :cheerio:(btw it is GIRLS HOSTEL (GH) now) . also the morgue is now the new girls hostel.
day 2:(14th june) : the moving-in day
the shifting, loading, unloading, mama puppa wishing goodbyes, dashing into each other, "hey, I am XYZ, you are?" , trying best to remember each one and every name, to and fro from seema hotel, buying silly but essential items like mugs, broom, etc and of course mattress.
day 3: (15th june) : 1st official day
Lashing rains.
Early morning discussions in the GH on what is the dress code for the day, bcoz someone informed the dresscode is semi-formal (formal shirt with jeans ? or t-shirt with formal pants? )
Meeting Shambhavi ma'am who does the registration process.
Inaugural speech by prof. D'Lima
Introduction to the various faculty members.
First case study (Milford case) handed over to us. (no idea what it's all about, it has been serving as a sleeping pill for the last 2 days, till now all i know bout the case is that Oates got promoted bcoz somebody died)
late evening- people getting their laptops configured by help from their fellow IT people. however no lights in the hostel, n people gather in library... server down... smart asses breaking their heads trying to somehow get connected. finally LAN connected and...... CS ONNNNNNNN
day 4 (today...sorry yesterday): starting foundation courses
9 am- Ranjini ma'am's lecture. dot 9 am.. door is latched from inside and a couple of poor guys keep knocking for next one hour. full day orientation programmes like- how to live safely and reponsibly in GIM by Mukesh sir, a short lecture by dr. Fatima who told us how to prevent various contagious diseases and the precautions to be taken, introduction to the placement cell by prof. Rangarajan (oh, 2 guys who went to pee werent taken back in class by the prof because they were 1 min late):nono:
late evening- people going in their 1st FREE ferry ride to divar and enjoying the scenic beauty of the surroundings.
Still later- ARRE...NET CHALU HOGAYA
Finally.....after the long wait...I have landed at GIM, and true to the word of senoirs, this place rocks......I had 2 go hame last nite(coz sme important work popped up), and could'nt stop missing this place(the GIM addiction syndrome...)
This post is very special to me, itz my 1st post from my laptop(i remember how i used to yearn to own 1) and itz my 1st post at GIM as a PGP1:. Now that I am officially a PGP 1, let me share my experiences..
I came at 8 in the morning on the 13th to book my room. Although the scenario was nothing less than a fish market during the room selection, i ended up getting the room in OTFF:cheerio:.I met a lot of my fellow PGP1s, made a lot of friends, chitchatted a lot and headed home to return back on the 14th.
On the 14th, i officially became a OT hostelite. I came in the evening, found that a lot of my friends had been to baga and calangute(who came back being mesmerized...:nono:). Some of us decided to bring out our cricketing skills(thanks to T20 WC). We played a couple of matches till the light got bad enough. It was late evening and some of the students were still pouring in. We met a couple of them and headed back 2 d hostel.
The next day was the start of the orientation programme. We got ourselves registered(thanks to Shambavi ma'am's patience). in the afternoon we had Prof.D'Lima's address, for which I was late...as usual(and ended up getiing not-so-friendly looks from the faculty members on the dias.). It was followed by the tea session with the faculty where Ranjini ma'am inteacted with most of us.I then went to get my laptop(a DELL Inspiron), but dint have any luck when I got back. We had a power failure and the internet wouldnt be availble till the next day...
The next day kick started with ranjini ma'am's lecture where we were told bout how disciplined and strict these guys are w.r.t attendence.Later on we had Prof. Nagarajan's talk(where we got a testimony of what would happen if we were late for his classes). The placement commitee gave a presentation on the past placements and told us how important our Summer's are. Post lunch we had a meeting with our faculty advisor..Mr. Bhattacharya. He told us about the interesting past bout this colg, how this colg was born etc etc. ....Well and then we had a session with the Dr. about how important hygine is in our life(Having bath daily, washing your hands bfore and after food and blah blah....)..
Ok.... Itz time that I end this post with a good bye( coz I have to have breakfast and run to the class..Itz RANJINI ma'am's lecture.)
P.S: We have been given a case study and I havent been able to make out head or tail of it..(may be I ll decode it by 2mrw)..
Bye
all the best folks... do well.. make the most of these two years..
aspire Saysall the best folks... do well.. make the most of these two years..
Thanks a lot aspire... hope 2 have the same amount of fun dat u guys had..(probably more)....:cheerio:
Well guys...
now that 3 days have passed since the course started, i have started realising the importance of having a diverse batch. I have just returned from a case discussion that we had in Sangram's room....it was quite interesting to find some nice solutions for the case study( something that was so alien, suddenly started makin sense)....especially jaggi's solution on the Dist.Virginia:banghead:
These guys are hell bent on playin CS now....Feelin sad to let them down, i got an important essay that remains to be completed, so i cant join them now....DAMN.....
Today was quite an interestin day, started off with Ranjini ma'am's lect(where i had to calibrate my wrist watch according to GIM time zone...LOL). Later on we were introduced to some really interesting databases...esp the CMIE database where u can check every damn thing bout any company...!!!!!
Pre and post lunch sessions included the intros to the different softwares that we would be using( I ll never forget to acknowledge any author even if I borrow a full stop and an exclamation mark from his/her article...)It ll remain in my head for the rest of my life.....
Dinner was decent at the mess...got to eat egg curry after a loooong time...Post dinner, we all accompanied our dear friend on a tour to the HT....(wonder how he missed it when we were doin a all GIM free tour).
All the OT guys started thanking their stars for not choosing HT....ha ha.
By the way.....I can hear the loud and angry shouts of the CS players.....that addiction is creeping in....m unable 2 stop it.... i think i ll write the essay in the 2 hr lunch break 2mrw.....(pray that i do)
CSSSSSSSSS...Here I COME.......
So long... till tomorrow
Bye
Hi Guys,
Its nice to see you people settling well in GIM.
I hope you people are liking the place.
As I had mentioned, no place is perfect and GIM is not an exception either. But it was heartening to see the posts by voodoo and Nitin which instantly transported me to my own orientation days.
Its a honour that Aspire has also paid the thread a visit and blessed this new chapter in this effort.
I remember the Dr Fatima's lecture in F2.
The heady mix of applause and cheering and laughter, so loud that I thought it might bring the 450 year old roof down...still rings clear in my ears.
The good Dr Fatima's fault - She had informed us that consumption of tobacco and alcohol is very injurious to health!! 😃 (shee man..were so shameless)
Guys, please do take care of your health. In my time, more than half the PGP 1s were down with sardi bukhar n all..it happens while u change base...ur immune system fights new bugs every day and one day gives up...and PGP 2 were all fit as a fiddle because they were already immune.
Its not a gyaan baanto session but a genuine unsolicited advice to have a nice life at GIM.
I hope you enjoy the pleasures that this tropical paradise has to offer with all your newly made friends.
I am not at GIM but can feel the scent of wet mud which wafts around the campus during the rainy season and cant wait to get back...which I will...on Saturday morning.
All the best and be good.
PS - Someone please say my Hullo to Jaggu bhai!!! He will be ur saviour till we senior come and screwtightofy the mess!!
In class now waiting for a prof arindham das gupta lecture, will post more later in the evening
to keep things short, this place is ok
The consequence of Joining college late is that i am late in posting on PG too.
16th June i arrived, leaving behind my comfy cocoon in my hometown to this unknown strange world. On reaching went directly to Jenny Mam for registration and other formalities.
Got the room key . Now i would like to tell that my room is Reception Room a.k.a Darban's Room a.k.a chaukidar ki jhopdi a.k.a OT 6 .
But inspite of all bad things i heard abt the room it turned out to be the best in GIM. Open the door n u see Mandovi flowing with the crystal water temting u to jump in. U have Gene's with the best of food n wine at stone throw distance.
So the first day i was a bit disoriented to see so many new ppl and i was feeling a misfit coz eerybody knew each other and i was completely new. But GIM has a characterisitc that everybody is so close that in no time i knew the whole bath. Exceept the names. I still confuse my rommie's Name.
2nd Day started with Ranjini Mam'slecture on Introduction to the Foundation Programme. And believe me She is one of the best oratros ii have seen. Sh simply mesmerises u by her lecturres.
Ne ways since the foundation prog is going so not much of academic load so evenings are mostly free. Ppl gather around jaggu's for chats. I peersonally like the "Walk the Talk" on road adjoining Mandovi very peaceful. The ferry ride to divar island is nice.
GIM has a open door policy. The college gates neve close nor does my room.
Its been 3 days now and an experience which cant be described in words.
Yesterday we celebrated the First B'day of PGP 1 . And i can tell i wish I wasnt born seeing the "HALAT" of he B'day Boy. It is celebrated in truly GIM style in front of QUAD.
Well Lecture is over so i gotta go.
More to come soon.
Hey guys...Its almost a week , in GIM now...!!...
You hardly know how time passes away..whether you are at "Jaggus" , attending lectures ," late night discussions " etc !!
Well already getting a feel of wats about to come in the 2 years ahead...Lots of cases to crack, presentaions to be delivered, assignments to be completed..
Just when we thought the week had come to an end..and finally its time to freak out...we have a deliverable assignment for tomorrow! Truly the life of an MBA, though officially we havent even started Term 1....but still GIM is such a place that ..even after getting the assigment ppl wud freak out and still manage to get d assignment done on time !...so looking forward to freaking out, even wid d assignments !!!
Still have 2 more sessions today !..Lets see whehter the count of assignment increases!! ..
Goa is a nostalgic place, the evening when the horizon turns crimson with the blood of the dying day and when your eyes fall on the soothing Mandovi, thoughts creep out from deep inside your heart.
Just beside 'cafe de cha' is a small ramshackle outfit run by an old lady. She sells chocoloates and the typical paan patri stuff available in Mumbai. I got myself acquainted with her on my second day here and have a date with her each day in the evening after dinner. She reminds me of sweet innocence and trust and a lifetime of memories and experience is etched on her face. Talking to her makes me relax and I feel less homesick :)
Today we had gone to the Delhi Darbar at the Panjim market for dinner. Inside a person was playing music and singing for the audience. The irony was nobody seemed to be appreciating. He also was taking requests and his voice was melancholic. After dinner, I walked up to him to say thank you for making my time worthwhile during the dinner. He smiled and thanked me. I felt blessed. I thought about all the hours spent in learning and relearning and rehearsing the music to finally play for an audience which is more interested in the inanimate decor than the beauty of the hard work.
We came back and I looked at the serene Mandovi flowing as sure as light at night and the feeling of nostalgia comes back in full force. It is a real cruel world we live in, people have more respect for the stones than men.
This place is great and Goa indeed brings out the feelings in me, maybe I'm really homesick...:)
Hello everyone...
Who else other than me can describe this day better..
Starting from right at midnight.. its been a great day..
I had the best birthday of my life till date..
Cakes, wishes, friends.. I have never been wished by so many people..
and i take this opportunity to thank all of u..
A real ordinary day was converted into a special day for me..
(a cake on my face was what I didnt wanted though)
Another diff thing today was that I had classes on my birthday.. which has never happened in the past... A lil boring it did seem.. but at the end didnt realize when the classes got over..
And then was the dinner at Gene.. it was amazing.. food, rain n frnds.. a perfect evening..m sure all 15 of us will remember this dinner..
Not even a week is over yet.. still I feel like I had been here since many many days....wonder what would I feel after spending the next 21 months here...
I have reached GIM and met up with the PGP1 who are every bit as sharp and witty as I had imagined. Loads of them kept on coming into my room and there were long introductory sessions which lead to Bouncer aka Nitiksh accusing me of distributing gyaan among the PGP 1s...which incidentally Bouncer gives in liberal amounts himself...considering Global gyaan is free of cost and available in unlimited quantities in GIM....
I had enough of prose so here I try some poetry. Its a tribute to "Nothing else matters". It talks about things that life at GIM is lived for....
The time for TP is so prime,
Sleeping at 5 aint a crime,
I gotta wake up on time,
and nothing else matters....
cases just strewn in the room,
I am heading for the doom,
Just my lappie shouldnt go boom,
Nothing else matters....
Heading to mess for the munch,
Dont bother the cash crunch,
Long as no lubiya for lunch
Nothing else matters....
Excel word and PPT,
Fulltoo bakar in OT,
By ur side walks a hottie,
And nothing else matters....
15000 lags who tried,
1200 who got fried,
Its u guys who got inside...
And Nothing else matters...
And nothing else Mattttteeeerrrrrrsss....
and nothing else matters...
Regards,
Severus Snape
Must say Snape has put up a gud show with the writing...
So here's what i had been going through since the day i landed in Goa.
I must say, the place feels like heavens, the moment i stepped up the stairs towards the admisson block, i heard a voice calling my name, and wwhen i turned towards the side, it was Jenny Mam calling me towards her office. MMust say Puys, a gem of a lady, willing to help you out anytime. I unloaded my stuff right there in her office on her table, if i had done this somewhr else, i would hav been thrownn out immediately, but the lady was so polite and kind and she let me leave the stuff there till i completed other formalities.
Trust is something i felt all over the campus. I haven't met people so trustworthy before. The Institute is smaller than my immagination had thought on watching the pics on sites, but i cn assure the new campus must be rocking. I met Nitiksh the first day, and man, the puy is a real cool cusstomer. didnt let me have the feel that i was his junior. He introduced me with the campus and the ferry to Dewar island. Though i havnt been there yet, but im trying very hardto take out some time to visit the island annd the Church it has. I am very assured that even if i dont visit all the beaches here, i will definitly be going to all the churches in Goa, they are alot peaceful than the outside world.
Profs have been great, the teaching methods are very different than what i have been going through till now. Though there have been assignments, they have helped me make friends. I also found the piece i left back home in Ashwin's room and strummed it the very first day. Although i m running low on practice, but will try to play the same some day on the island. I am missing my ma as the food doesnt taste that nice, but its bearable. I miss my friends who were left behind weaving when i came here. But i knw they will be happy to read this. and ill be happy to find heavens to study in.
Not yet signing off, you have to listen to me alot in the future from now on.
Ciyo....
kKaNn... scatter away...
Yesterday, i got the opportunity to meet Snape, whose arival was being long awaited by PGP1 Puys who have known him for long through PG.
When i came to knw bout his arrival, i pinged him first and then managed to catch him in the corridor. We sat for quite some time discusing various things. And believe me, it was no gyan, but the truth about what life holds for me that he was making me aware of. The same holds for Nitiksh, who proved to be my first mentor in GIM. Both have been helping us out during the times of waiitlist movements, encouraging us inspite of their summers. And Kudos to such an effort. annd yesterday also, he didnt look bothered when i was shooting similar questions that he must have been answering the whole day. And knw wat, i came across a very special trophy for special persons.
So im looking forward to bug him and Nitiksh even more once they settle, and hey, Nitiksh doesnt look like the bouncer he is being called here.
Ciyo...
kKaNn... scatter away...
The college is a bit silent today with most of the PGP1s going off somewhere or the other to celebrate the first weekend as a Bshooler.
Some of the seniors are here in the mess, while yours truly is in his room because of cash crunch and because i've to do a group presentation :sneaky:
Right now I'm off to Casa de cha
By the way kkann is my roomie
Hey Folks.....,
The busy schedule seems to be taking a toll on my posts....I was so busy from the past few days that I had actually lost the track of time.....
I finished my lectures and took some time to relax...Believe me guys, there's nothing like sipping a hot cup of Ginger Tea(thanks to casa) and watching the Mandovi flow by, after a long day's work...! But,you get to experience this privilege in the one and only place called GIM.
Last week had been very eventful, with a lot of case studies and reports...and it was during one of these case studies(at 12am) that I peeked out of the discussion room and saw a sight that was truly breathtaking...The dark waters of the Mandovi flowing by, with glimmering lights of the distant trawlers in the horizon and to add to it all...cool wind blowing in my face... i just forgot about the case and stood there, appreciating the beauty of the silent night...
If I have managed to bore you puys, let me add some more spice to the news......Our seniors have arrived and the college is buzzing with activity... I met a couple of them( tonite I would be meeting more in the hostel), and believe me...they are coool man(atleast the one's I have met are). Currently, the rooms are being cleaned and rearranged by them( and in the process in managed to get the entire first year books from one of them.....). That's a testimony to prove how helpful these guys are and will be..... I can go on and on....not now..may be some other post cz I have to prepare a PPT nw....
P.S...: A few seconds back I got a ping saying CSONNNNNN......
May be I wud like to join them...
Regards...
hey, Nitiksh doesnt look like the bouncer he is being called here.![]()
Ciyo...
kKaNn... scatter away...
Finally the truth is out............thanks KkaNn
Here begins my Second Innings or rather Season 2 at GIM as some would like to call it. After summers made up my mind to do Marketing majors instead of Finance. One of the toughest decisions but a wise one( atleast for the time being for me!!).
Took up subjects like Services Marketing, Pricing, Consumer Behavior, Advanced Marketing Research, and Marketing Engineering along with Strategic management and Software Engineering in Management. The best thing about GIM is the flexibility it gives its students to select the combination of subjects as per their choice rather than grade in the first year.!!
With the second year came the shifting into the new rooms, with new neighbours. Though miss the front corridor that I used to stay in the first year but nevertheless the room that I share now has a bunch of close friends and batchmates.
Met lot of juniors in the past few days and had intro sessions also known as the Personality development Programs or PDP in short. It made me go back to the same situation last year where we got introduced to our seniors. Was really a great experience.:cheerio:.
Hope to meet more of them and share our experiences with them.
Mandovi is swelling with water and there is some relief due to the rains in Goa after a scorching summer in Ahmedabad.!!! Yet to visit divar Island, assignments have already started pouring in.....mite go this weekend unless some wise professor thinks of screwing it up for us!!!
Cheers!!
Yesterday night the PDP session went on til 2
It was real fun and all thanks to the seniors. You all rock
i reached collg @ 5:00pm and to tell u all honestly my tiredness, frustation due to a long journey all disappeared
in a moment.the collg is located on the banks of river mandovi and the place is so beautiful dat i hav no words to
describe.the collg has 5 hostels OT,HT,Morgue,Admin,LH wid HT givin the best panoramic view of the college and the
mandovi river.i met the warden and took a room @ HT(hill top).i was tired hence went to sleep early night.nxt day
was the registration day.for the first time i went into admin bloc.while walking to our registration room i had the
feeling of "walking thru the corridors of power".uptill now i had met a few fellow PGP1s who seemed very impressive.
i was feeling rather inferior in front of dem.but as u know knowledge brings humility, that humility was well present in them.
they made me feel totally @ ease.we completed our registration formalities and were told by the administration dat director sir
and the entire faculty was goin to address us in a few mins.then walked the real prestige and value of GIM,the faculty and the Director sir.
the entire faculty introduced demselves and director sir made short and sweet speech covering all the important points reg our stay here.
then we were taken round the campus and shown laundary(comes first on my list),gym, canteen, jaggus, administrative bloc and hostels.
with this our day ended at 5:00pm.after that we all batchmates went on the ferry(yesss,v hav a ferry service just nxt to the collg)
to the opposite side of the river.seeing GIM from the opposite end a feeling of pride filled my heart.nxt day again was introductory with
speeches made by some faculty, placement cell, doctor etc.at night we celebrated the b'day of one my batchmate and to tell u it was the most
spectacular(b'day boy with cake and eggs smashed all over him) b'day ever seen by me.with the third day started our foundation course.
on the first day in the first session itself v got our first assignment by Mirchandani sir.deadline was next day.the rest of the day went into anticipation
of another one but thankfully it didn't come.so on the first evening of foundation v were sitting with our grps reading and understanding the assignment.
the nxt day we got two more assignments and the evening went as before.GIM has purchased costly softwares from diff companies which gives us all the info
(EPS,EP ratio, balance sheet, annual report etc etc) reg any listed company in india for the last 5 yrs.GIM has also purchased some other s/w but knowedge abt
them i cannot share:(.we had not anticipated so much pressure from the first day itself but it is whtlife in GIM is all made abt.
in last 9 days we hav got more dan 10 assignments(infact i m writing dis as i got bored wid one).v hav got one of the best
faculties here with ADG sir havin served in the planning commission on India,Vernekar sir havin served the Goa govt reorganizing education system in Goa,
Ranjini maam,Sujoy sir and Balasubramanian sir IIM passouts,Parulekar sir gold medalist in pharma,Mirchandani sir havin vast experience of industry(served as CEO)
and teaching,Nagarajan sir havin served in RBI and teaching now.one can only dream of havin such a faculty at one place.all the profs are following case study
pattern of teaching in which v have to study one day ahead of the class.sats and sundays are also full wid assignments so life is pretty bzy here infact dis
thing alone is one of the hallmarks of gr8 schools.ohho, dont misunderstand dat GIM is all abt studies, we had our GBMs(general body meets),PDP
(personality dev prog)and trips to beaches and movie.now i m ending here as my roomie is pressing for d assignment.so dats it for now, will come back shortly.
