Life @ Great Lakes Inst. of Mgmt-Chennai [GLIM]

Hi all,

Finally the long wait of junta comes to an end as this years placement report is finally ready now. It shall be updated soon on the website , u can also read about it on PG at the following link

PaGaLGuY.com - The Everything of MBA, CAT 2008, GMAT, XAT, IIM - Great Lakes Institute of Management: Placement Report 2008 - Placements

Cheers

Why is the placement report stil not updated in institute (Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai) website?

NoeL

Good placements for people with ex less than 2 years, but am really disappointed with placements of 2+ years of experience.

This disappointment increased when i saw the links below the great lakes placement report on PG:- PaGaLGuY.com - The Everything of MBA, CAT 2008, GMAT, XAT, IIM - Average Domestic Salary up by 33 pc at DMS, IIT-Delhi - Placements

Most of the MBA collages have higher average salaries as compared to what people got in great lakes. It gets bad when you realize that in such collages the average work ex is just 6 months and we in gLakes have work ex of 37 months.

UKM can you explain the reason for this.....

I would say the reason for that might be the great number of career switches that happen at Great Lakes. The report says that about 90-odd out of 164 have opted for a sector change from their previous sectors. With that in mind, I think, the placement report is pretty encouraging.

Hi there....

Well if u observed the avg figure of the 2-4 years of wrk exp is closest to our average and largely this bracket is the majority in our batch which has an average experience of 37 mnths.Nw if the avg figures of this bracket whould have been much better then that wld have lead to a significant rise in our average package too which unfortunately didnt happen due to numerous factors.

As for other bschools faring better than us........point is recession and the vulnerable state of economy at present is for real. Check todays ET which has an entire page abt hw this is affecting the choices of an MBA. Now thats exactly what we saw at the time of placement and hence is coherent with the over all logic of us not managing some huge increase in our average when economy is not doin good.

However other colleges r claiming 33 and 25 % growth and if u c those numbers wht comes across is that their performance is going opposite to where economy is going! Since economy has an direct impact on the corporate, if u ask me there is a sense of incoherence about these claims.

Nevermind all of this , our numbers are right in frnt of u and they may be slightly disappointing bt they demonstrate the year which went by and nothing more. Its on u guys now to take this to a level which is comparable to other institutes......if they come out wth realistic figures in first place ;-)

Cheers

Hi all,

Life at Great Lakes has come full circle........today as a batch we complete an entire year in GL as this was the day last year when we were supposed to report for registration.
The classes r still on unlike our predecessors and probably couple of exams too:huh:

However largely tht fact has beginning to sink in tht we are just 10days away from passing out ......the experience and the life of an MBA is at its fag end.For most of us this is the last time we took a break from our careers to peruse academics and the fact that its ending now brings along with it a mixed bag of emotions. There are fervent attempts to catch up with pals, have outings wth them, writing testi fr them and thngs which can generally be classified as attempts to freeze this experience as one of the most memorable times in our life. As days will come come to an end emotions and nostalgia will be running high in the campus and i am sure when u guys will join us in our cultural fest then the high velocity of emotions will take u by surprise......

Quite a few of us are expecting our family members to join us on convocation and many of us are also looking frwrd to go back to our families and yes the sense of anticipation regarding that is building up too....

Overall lot of thngs r going on , its just tht these mixed emotions r understandably very different frm wht the incoming batch mst be going thrgh....

I have few more posts left for last few days in GL after which i shall pass on the baton to Champions......

Cheers

Today is the last day in college for the current batch as tomorrow convocation is lined up for us......

Its almost a surreal feeling that MBA is over and along with it so many things which are part and parcel of the journey called MBA. This year will go down as one of the most special year fr the entire graduating class and i am positive emotion will run high tomorrow at convocation.....

While there are many things about this entire year which were very exciting there are also few personal favorites which shall stand out for rest of my life. MBA is essentially about these special moments which imprints into the memory and make the entire experience so memorable.I am glad that i went through this journey:-P and i am definitely a different person today then the guy who entered the hallowed gates of Great Lakes.....

However at the same time i am being stuck by this empty feeling of leaving college tomorrow.......frankly not a great feeling to have but i guess was part and parcel of the deal called MBA:sad:

Its also obvious that the mantle of posting latest about Life@Greatlakes is on " Champions" now and i am sure they will do a great job but tht comes with the truth tht more or less i have outlived my utility here.So with a heavy heart i am signing off from this thread but i am i shall be looking for opportunities ( whenever there shall be)to come and post here

Keep on rocking ppl and let the world know about Great Lakes.....

Cheers and Bye
Ashutosh

I totally agree Skunk Ray...
The help, support, motivation, inspiration, sugestions was just awe inspiring.
Thank you very much the UKM, Kay Kay and all the seniors. You just rock mates...

We as a new batch has settled as far as acco and all is concerned...
However the roller coaster ride has began...
Tomorrow we will be completing exact 2 weeks since the beginning of actual course. And within these 12-13 days the transformation was phenomenal. We are reading tons of pre read... are involved in atleast two projects now... the empirical study... started thinking about the committees and most of us has joined atlease one of the group like photography, the management book group, the blogging and similar innovative and exciting groups.

The mantra is to extract as much as we can from the eminent and world renowned professors, performing the best at the same time managing the time to run the institute and the batch through one of the committees.

So much change in such a short time... to be very frank i m not believing it... I have heard that it all will happen still havnet believed that it all will happen so fast...

Puys... we will be keep posting... abt the happenings... the turns and runs of our journey... the Odyssey of success

Class of 2009
Great Lakes, Chennai.

Hi seniors...
Can someone tell me about the jobs that one can get if you choose Marketting as a major. Most of the jobs looks to be in the IT industry only (marketting and sales). I presently have a year of exp in Product developement .. but i 'm lookin for a MBA to get away from this field... so how many ppl get placed in other FMCG and stuff... and when i looked at the placement profile 50% are in IT... can u please give me more insight into the situation.?

Thanks Ashutosh for all the insights and directions. The onus is now onto us to carry forward the legacy called Great Lakes that you folks had nurtured and nourished.

Cheers

Presenting before fellow puys the batch 2009 at the Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai. A bunch of highly motivated individuals who are aware of the level of commitment that a one year course demands, especially when it happens to be the progeny of Uncle Bala. The name doesnt need any introduction particularly when we are talking about management education.
The kind of leap that the college has made in the past 4 years is not just remarkable but is also a testimony that if an institute has the mettle and substance, people will be bound to put their stake in it. This is exactly what each Great Laker has done here. Why else would an IES officer leave his cozy life style only to get grilled for the next one year. Why do you think would employees of AMD, Motorola, Accenture Consulting, O&M;, Siemens, Frost and Sullivan, CSC, TCS and Infosys, to name a few, quit their princely lives to enter into Great Lakes. Several successful entrepreneurs, both small and big, are carrying out a remote management of their business from here so that the skills required for further efficiency can be honed in due course of time. To add to the diversity pool, we have bankers and lawyers. This is just a glimpse of the composition of the batch 2009.
One question that anyone might ask is Why has everybody suddenly started talking about Great Lakes? Is a lot of hype being deliberately created behind it. To answer this question, let me ask another question How would it feel to discuss governance from none other than Mr. T. N. Seshan. How would it feel to do brain storming on real cases of Marketing with the guru Dr. Nirmal Gupta. How does it feel when you have CEOs of various companies talking and discussing about their career growth, future business trends and expectations from MBAs. Honestly speaking it feels awesome. It feels as if it would have been a great loss had we not opted for this college. To cut the talk short, every Great Laker boasts of the faculty that teaches here and the kind of knowledge sharing that happens here.
The equation is simple: We offer Great Lakes our brand in terms of our experience and diversity and the Institute tags us as a Great Laker.

@The Hummer,

Thanks a lot for these inputs.
Well, I have one query here (it's my personal).
Like every other B-school boy you have talked all the best things about Great Lakes. Well, I am also quite excited about GLakes I must say. Can you please throw some light on the profiles of the most ordinary guys selected this year? If you rank the admits in descending orders of profiles, I would like to know about the last three in the list.

Well, Can you please share this? It'll be great for me.

Thanks Hummer, for the useful post.
I second each and every point you have mentioned, lucky to be a part of this growing college... and more importantly the peer group.

@FromAlienworld,
Our class has a healthy mix of people with different experience levels, from various industries and domains. Each individual brings a different prospective to the class discussions which has a enriching effect...

Before answering your question... I ll say that
I hope you will agree that any management entrance exam is a relative exam and the CAT %iles varies for most of us on the D-day, this does not make any body's profile look inferior...

We have experience ranging from 7 months to as high as 8.5 years... (these are as per my knowledge, for official figures you ll have to wait for the website update) but then when a person with less experience is taken it means he/she has proved him/her self among the experience lot on some other parameters...

Hope I have answered your query...

Thanks to the peer group... Its just one month and I have learned a lot from Champions...

Regards,
GS

Can you believe it? Just 3 weeks since we stepped into Great Lakes and already there is a change in our lingo and attitude!

Submitted the synopsis of the empirical analysis today...phew! Feels great to know that we will be under the nose of marketing Gurus like Dr. Nirmal Gupta, not to mention the Kotler-Srinivasan centre of marketing excellence - the two pillars of marketing research! Great Lakes is well on its way to become an institute par excellence for marketing!

Exciting days ahead

Very well said Hummer...what an exposure here. Folks from so many walks of life sharing a common platform...their plethora of experiences, multitude of achievements...it is simply amazing...yesterday i was talking to buddies from Merchant Navy and got so much informed about their adventurous life-styles,luxurious voyages,parties:1eye: et al......I am sure this one year is going to be one of the most memorable ones....Thumbs up to fellow-mates..
