Life @ Great Lakes Inst. of Mgmt-Chennai [GLIM]

Very much excited about the activities and responsibilities this college bestows upon the students..The management has been very open to innovative ideas of each and every student...result has been so many new initiatives within weeks of the course commencement...

Great Lakes does have a culture to make "Business Ready Managers"!

Very well said Hummer...what an exposure here. Folks from so many walks of life sharing a common platform...their plethora of experiences, multitude of achievements...it is simply amazing...yesterday i was talking to buddies from Merchant Navy and got so much informed about their adventurous life-styles,luxurious voyages,parties:1eye: et al......I am sure this one year is going to be one of the most memorable ones....Thumbs up to fellow-mates..
Cheers....
Thanks Hummer, for the useful post.
I second each and every point you have mentioned, lucky to be a part of this growing college... and more importantly the peer group.

@FromAlienworld,
Our class has a healthy mix of people with different experience levels, from various industries and domains. Each individual brings a different prospective to the class discussions which has a enriching effect...

Before answering your question... I ll say that
I hope you will agree that any management entrance exam is a relative exam and the CAT %iles varies for most of us on the D-day, this does not make any body's profile look inferior...

We have experience ranging from 7 months to as high as 8.5 years... (these are as per my knowledge, for official figures you ll have to wait for the website update) but then when a person with less experience is taken it means he/she has proved him/her self among the experience lot on some other parameters...

Hope I have answered your query...

Thanks to the peer group... Its just one month and I have learned a lot from Champions...

Regards,
GS

@Robaroo...

Sorry, shouldn't have put it that way.
What I wanted to know is whether GLakes does have place for mediocre candidates.
You have talked all about work ex., while I wanted to know about academics.
Can anyone with very mediocre (well, u can say below average) academics and an average GMAT score, and also average work ex (not in terms of years but job profile) look forward to get admitted in GLakes?
If no, then can you pls tell me how to make it? The only thing that can be done is to write GMAT again and get a good score. Will it do?

Well, Great Lakes places a lot of emphasis on Work Experience as well as ur written score......acads is of particular importance if u happen to be a fresher or a person with relatively less work ex...your extra curriculars play a big role if ur work exp is less....

So, a good GMAT score does add weight to ur selection....work experience is given a lot of importance.....to give u an idea, the average work ex of the previous batch was 37 months....

Well, to sum up my experience so far at great lakes.....there is never a dull moment when u are surrounded by great Faculty, great peer group coming from diverse backgrounds, an outbound program that is designed to overwhelm your senses at the beginning of the course, guest lectures from some renowned entrepreneurs, student driven activities, assignments, case study discussions, learning foreign languages like chinese, research activities and new initiatives designed to encourage students to share their knowledge, experiences....and the list is endless.....life at great lakes is "living the MBA dream" and hey whats more....all in an year's time....before u know what hit u...u would be armed with an MBA degree to take on the challenges of a global manager.

Alienworld,
like any good institute, Great lakes too gives the importance to academics, CAT/GMAT score, Essays. But it doesn't mean that only these things determine a candidate's candidature. there are many more factors responsible for a candidates success and the profs decide that in the GD and PI process.

My profile :
Xth - 84%
XIIth - 62%
BE - 72%
work ex - around 19 mnth(at the time of applying) in IT in a IT major
CAT score - 94.62

and still I m here at great lakes.
Now its all upto you to decide

Another batch of high-energy photons graduated out of the Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai on the 30th of April, 2008. Bedecked with the tag of MBA, the Junior Crusaders (as the Batch 2008 is known) are all set to launch their crusade in the corporate sphere. Held at the grand Chennai Convention Center, the convocation was an event filled with emotions, resolutions, guidance and exuberance.
The gathering witnessed the presence of Mr. N.Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu as Chief Guest and Mr. Ramalinga Raju, Founder and Chairman, Satyam Computers Limited as the Guest of Honour. Of course there were distinguished personalities like our Uncle Bala and Mr. T. N. Seshan (our permanent faculty).
Thoughts were poured in on issues like the importance of leadership in India, the essence of curiosity, need to see a dream and ensure that it gets realized and the relative significance of imagination vis--vis knowledge.
The feeling of accomplishment could easily be seen in the eyes of our seniors. An equal degree of determination was reflected in their attitudes. Check out the following link for more information.

kbipul,

I must say, your academic scores are too good if you compare it with mine! The tragic thing with me is I don't even qualify to sit for CAT 😞 Therefore I am heavily banking on a good GMAT score. I haven't appeared for that yet but I understand it's the only hope left.

Regarding my work ex., I will complete more than 50 months by next April, and though its not too impressive, it's not that bad also :neutral:

I just came to know about GLakes recently, and now I am considering it
No. 1 in my list (don't know whether I should).
@The Hummer,

Thanks a lot for these inputs.:sad:
Well, I have one query here (it's my personal).
Like every other B-school boy you have talked all the best things about Great Lakes. Well, I am also quite excited about GLakes I must say. Can you please throw some light on the profiles of the most ordinary guys selected this year? If you rank the admits in descending orders of profiles, I would like to know about the last three in the list.

Well, Can you please share this? It'll be great for me.

It deem it extremely disrespectful to rate a co-students's profile as 'ordinary'. So let me talk about myself.

I was not on the initial confirmed list. I was not on the wait list. I got a call a whole 16 days after the wait list was announced. Now I think that is pretty ordinary.

I have a four years of work ex in IT. Worked for Perot Systems Consulting Application Solutions and Sterling Commerce. My domain was predominantly Travel, Transport and Logistics.I was a senior software engineer.

710 GMAT. Previous Year CAT percentile 95 (Didnt use this to apply to Great Lakes though). Decent extracurriculars - Worked with Azim Premji Foundation, Head the Alumini committee of my alma mater, part time aerobics instructor. Foreign Language known - French. Apart from this 4 Indian languages.

Hope that gave you some pointers!

All the Best!

@FromAlienWorld,
Put in your best, I am sure you will do good in GMAT and then give ur best short for the coming year...

If you have any further queries please feel free to ask...

All the best..!

Some links on the coverage that the institute got from the media on the day of convocation. This is to give an indication to the 2009-2010 hopefuls that the college has started creating a mark for itself in the media.

Also Uncle Bala has gone on record saying that we intend to move into our new ECR campus for the incoming batch of 2009 - 2010

Hello Everyone,

After a brief period of non activity, Im back here at PG to give my perspective on happenings at Great Lakes. For more information on what goes on at Great lakes, do visit our Blog Here.

As to whats been happening at Great Lakes... well a lot has already been said. All i can add to it is that... Its too cool!!! MBA @ Great Lakes Rocks!!!

You've got to experience it to know it...

Dear Fellow GLakers You are every bit right in saying that the Convocation was in fact a memorable one for the graduating batch (The Jaycees) and an inspirational one for the incoming batch (We, The Champions).The ideas shared by Uncle Bala, Mr.B.Ramalinga Raju (CEO, Satyam) and Mr. Ram (Editor, Hindu) ,to say the least were enlightening and gave a lot of mental fodder. The baton of taking GL to heights of unparalleled glory has now been passed onto us and I am sure we have started in the right earnest and on a very promising note.
Just to add on some of the defining moments that stood out during our short stay here The GUEST LECTURES by some towering personalities of the corporate world like CXOs of firms like MaFoi Management Consulting (Founder, CEO), Saint Gobain (CEO) and HeyMath (CTO) were really inspiring and definitely added in a big way to our understanding of the importance of having a long term vision, focus, commitment and risk appetite. The words from such people are priceless and what a great opportunity it was to hear straight from the people who themselves define what a business leader is all about!!

@ranjit
I fully endorse whatever you have said about our experience at GLakes..And in addition to that I would like to mention something more ..Something about the OUTBOUND TRAINING Program..

GL is not just all about serious work 24X7, power talks, Guest Lectures and sleepless nights .Itz all this, but much more than that and this program was a testimony to that. We played team games here, interacted with each other, danced late into the night and got our batteries recharged for what I am sure will be the greatest learning experience of our lifetime. And thatz not all .All this was beautifully designed to teach us the lessons of team spirit, team camaraderie and friendly competition and whole lot of things. There are just no words to explain what we experienced there as the words fall short. Uve got to be there to experience it!!

truly endorse the views expressed by the fellow Great lakers..the orientation program, outbound fun and team building exercises, guest lectures by industry eminent CEO's and CTO's, Marketing lectures and case study by Prof Nirmal Gupta and How to become an effective executive lectures . Everything was just awesome and helped all of us to get ready and energised for Term 1.

2 weeks into Term 1

The term 1 with subjects like Intelligently interacting with others, Marketing Management, Financial Accounting, Macro economics, Statistics and Mandrin are all keeping us very busy. Adding to it the team activities, internal clubs, group activities and discussions, case studies and karm yoga - working with the needy people and hence contributing to the society...all this in just 24 hours a day and 7 days a week...seems impossible

Who can teach better time management than this. A formal welcome to the MBA course.

Excellent work EvilZombie....I am sure aspiring folks would gain a lot of information about Great Lakes.
Let the fragrance spread....
Cheers!!!!!

Awesome Job Guys!

Thank U mkinra. Its all the inspiration we got from seniors which is flowing in the form of enthusiasm here.
And as my fellow Great Lakers have mentioned above, apart from subject one thing which we are learning here is giving the best in the peak of stress. Dont think any B School give this much variety of experience in the first 15 days only. Its awesome. We ae doing so much simultaneously that sometimes I can not believe is the same me who used to procrastinate at work

Here procrastination will hit you with tons of unread-preread and tons of postread :innocent:

Thank you very much to everyone who is posting all the happenings of the roller coaster in the busiest schedule here... Ya I know we all Great Lakers rock !!!
