I have been in a dilemma for some days regarding what to do after my graduation( B.Com Hons from Delhi University).
I am considering of doing Chartered accountancy ( CA ) after my graduation considering I haven't got any campus placement yet.Or a family managed business mba from sp jain?
Is it better doing a CA incl internship of 3yrs & then may be going on for MBA after 2-3yrs of experience or the famaliy managed business program from spjain?
Would be very grateful , if any one can help.
I'd like to have more responses to my query in post#184 on Page 19.
Please pour in, puys.
could any one tell me is it possible to get in to a good b school with having a very poor profile like below 60 12th and a much gap in academics but have genuine reason, if i ll score a 95+ in cat 2009
Hi Puys,
I'm swinging between all kinds of dilemmas! Need some sorting out here..
My acads are as follows:
B.E(EXTC) 71%
10th 77%
12th 82%
Was placed in Satyam in my 3rd year and bcz it was one of the first companies to recruit on our campus, i wasn't allowed to sit for any other company(screwed up college politics!!). I guess everybody knows the deal with Satyam. So the only job i was banking on has gone out the window. I was preparing for CAT last year but since i started late, I lost all hopes due to my miserable AIMCAT scores. So didn't really work hard for CAT. At the end of it my cat result was a measly 81%ile.
The dilemmas i'm facing are,
1> Should i go for the B-schools which i'm eligible for with my kind of CAT score, would they provide me with a good job profile at the end of it all?
OR,
2> Should i take up a job in a BPO as that's the only job available and prepare for cat '09?
ALSO,
3> If you suggest 2> then would that work ex be of any value?
plz help me out here, i'm real confused..
Thanks..
Hi,
I am in final year of B.E. CSE from a nondescript govt. engg college in MP. My acads : 91 in Xth CBSE, 86 in XII CBSE and 70 in engg so far. Also I have decent extra-currics. I wrote CAT 08 and scored a paltry 91.18 percentile. My long-term goal is to do an MBA from a top 10 Indian B-school.
I have got a job offer from TCS at 3.15 lacs p.a. CTC.
The issues I have are:
1. Due to the economic slowdown, the date of joining is going to be delayed a lot. As it is, my seniors got their dates around 4 months after their final exam in 8th sem. I do not want to waste that much time just waiting.
2. Personally I'm least interested in joining TCS because it will definitely make my profile highly straitjacketed and I'll be afflicted by the MIT (Male IT) syndrome. I'll be a part of the crowd. Also I do not have any interest in coding at all.
So, in the current scenario, is it possible for me to get jobs in the following sectors or companies?
- Marketing/Sales in good organizations where I get to learn
- Microfinance organizations
- Financial Services
- Tourism and hospitality (for instance - makemytrip.com)
- other industries
I do understand that the profile and pay packet I receive will pale out in comparison to the one I have in hand, but as they, I dearly want to follow where my heart leads me.
Please help.
Regards and TIA,
Abhishek
hi abhishek,
i have a very similar profile to yours and although i am an aspirant like u i believe i can give some advice based on combining my knowledge and advice given by senior puys earlier.....
u already have identified the problem....if u get into tcs and then apply into a b-school then u r getting into the MIT syndrome...from wat i am seeing this year b-schools are giving a lot of emphasis on profiles...so automatically at the time of interviews u r getting straitjacketed into the largest pool of applicants with the panel not finding anything which distinguishes u.....
so my advice WITH the assumption that->
u r absolutely sure that u want to get into a top b-school and this is NOT going to change in the next 1-2 years while u r gaining the experience u need....which means u will have the hunger, the drive, the zeal to try your best even over a long period of time (bcoz 1-2 yrs is quite a long time IMHO)
forget the pay packet...& chuck TCS...IF u get an alternative job...an alternative profile go for it and in the process get an invaluable work-ex....remember we are thinking long-term here...which is to cultivate a distinct profile which is going to stand u apart later in the b-school interviews...
the problem is due to crisis alternative jobs will be hard to come by...but opportunities always exist for people who try and are willing to go for it...all the alternatives u have mentioned are good....let me also add working with NGOs and taking up a part-time teaching job with a coaching centre like TIME,IMS,CL,etc to the list....
& note that in either case-whether u join TCS or not do not stop working on your profile...u can find some suggestions here->
http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/prep-resources/36824-survival-tips-b-school-gd-11.html#post1389524
note that here the standard disclaimers apply :)....i have given my advice based on wat i feel...at least this is wat i hope to do if i fail to get a b-school this year...your and mine situations r similar....so i cud relate to it...but the final decision is yours....
gud luck to u...
regards,

Hi All,
I am new to this forum need a big time help from all of you to overcome the ambiguity and see through the right direction.
Profile:
Age: 24 Years

Management School degree affiliated from
Guru Jambeshwar University
Hissar) in the year 2005 with 60%.
Professional Qualification: Professional Diploma in International Business
(AIMA)
1 Year weekend based course.
Work Experience: DHL Express India (P) Ltd.
2.5 Years
Query:
I had quit my work and appeared for CAT other examinations but unfortunately could not make it this year (apart from few calls from SNAP colleges).
It seems I dont know which way to head on as after completing BBA I straight away started working with logistics firm into retail and then operation process but now I want to change my profile and probably make a career with either Human Resource that to dealing with training and developmental aspects (bringing an innovation to work culture)
Hence would like to pursue a course or degree which may act as catalyst for me to make a career and position in corporate or public sector with different dimension and good renumeration.
I do not want to be part of the rat race for MBA and just do it becoz its one of the lucrative career but want to pursue Master or MBA to add on quality to my life and work along with job satisfaction, good position and renumeration.
Therefore, keen to know if I pursue Masters in Psychology (since it deals with dimensional aspect of understanding and dealing with the behaviorial aspect of human being (probably could help in training and development)) and try for a part time MBA specialization with HR what would be my future prospects.
Hence, please help me with below details:
v Am I eligible for pursuing Masters of Arts in Psychology or Masters of Arts in Applied Psychology (if yes what is the procedure, tentative dates and scope in universities in India & abroad)?
Also which are good universities for the same?
v What is the difference between these two branches and which one is most suitable from career perspective (scope in INDIA & abroad renumeration & position wise)?
v What is the scope of Psychology as a career and possible remuneration from it as compares to MBA from a decent B school? How can I amalgamate it with Human Resource profile in corporate or public sector?
v If one has to apply abroad are there any scholarships or grants available?
Please guide me if you could as I know for me Masters would be the last opportunity to probably change the work arena and also to start up my career with new dimension.
Thanks in advance.

Dude...........comeon man!!!
why are you planning to do MBA? if the career growth and opportunity in your current company is good, then why do you need to quit the company?
there is a reason why people do MBA. while the biggest reason is that many find their current job boring, and "hope" that an MBA will land them at a better job, there are some who feel they have talent, and believe that an MBA can supplement that and get them to do something they are already good at, even better. then there are some who pursue MBA just because everybody around them is writing C/X/MAT, JMET.
your signature shows details of so many exams you have written, and then when you get a call, you are asking "should i go for the interview or go to dublin".
you should never have had the doubt in your mind. you got into the MBA season with one purpose, and that was to get into a B-School. what will happen if some panelists from IIM-S happen to read this thread, and see this attitude from you?

P.S - no one can predict the kind of job you will get after you graduate from IIM-S, so the question on career perspective becomes null and void
Hello
I am taking my CAT this year and hold a B.Com along with a Diploma in Chinese.
Can someone give me a description of difference in profiles offered to laterals viz-a-viz freshers at IIMs.
Say Bain gives Associate offers to IIM guys and Consultant/Senior Associate offers to laterals.
Similarly what is the case with other consulting companies.
I am debating between taking a decent (not frontend) consulting job, an MSc Finance/International Business from top B Schools abroad (which have almost equal placement record as IIMs) and CAT.
In case IIMs don't really boost my career path in consulting, I will shift my gears to MSc.
Please help. Also please don't take me for an overconfident fresher. I know CAT is touch and IIMs are world class. However, the hard-work put in CAT can be used in other useful projects, so its a critical decision.
Hi All,
First i like to thanks all you share and answer the queries. I have gone through the thread and find good information and suggestion.
Even i am one of the people you in dilemma like you all, my dilemma is:
After my Eng in 2006 i joined one of the top IT firms and started my career, after a year i feel stagnant in my job hence decided to go with MBA hence quit my job in Aug 2008 for CAT'08.
I score around 90 in car and 91 in XAT. I was very disappointed with score of other exams. Been wanted to do mba from top institute i decided to give it another shot and joined by IT industry a week before. Luck to get back in this recession time.
Now my dilemma is I already have 24 month experience and by the time i join next year i will have total 40 month exp. With this work ex should is it advisable to spend another 2 year in MBA or i should go for one year full time Executive MBA.
I am not much interested in IT but think can manage it. Also i am looking to shift to sales in my current company.
Please suggest me. I am in dilemma.
Hi all,
I work for an IT company which is a product development company in india. I have got 2.5yrs expereince as of now. Work is good and satisfactory but with a moderate package.MY aim is to do MBA (india) from only IIMs .From past 2 yrs I have been writing CAT but cudnt clear IIMs cuttoff. I am planning to write CAT this yr also and I am confident of cracking this time (Never know wat happens ......but still) Suppose if i do MBA from IIMs nd as I dont have interest in Finanace/Marketing or other fiields and with my experinece in this IT company, I wud like to work for big software firm which is a product development compnay only cos i feel i have very good technical skills of IT for developing a producct. can u plz suggest me wat sud i do now am i guaranteed tat I will get job in this field only or Do i need to look at some other careers also like IT consulting/Marketing/Analyst?? Or U can suggest me wat all carreers r thr for a guy with an IT background with interesti in IT only????
My motivation behind MBA in IT is
1) Make use of the IT experience
2) Am good at technical skills.
3) Expecting a very good package with less time after my MBA in IIMs.
I guess any one with an IT background can answer my query
Cheers
Apache.

Hi Puys,
I seek some guidance regarding my career pathway. I am a Mechanical eng and i served TCS for 2 years. During this stint i realised that i would not be satisfied with a career in IT and so i resigned in Sept 2008. I appeared for a no. of MBA exams this time but did not recieve calls from any of the colleges that i had targeted. I am interested in either of the two, International/Operations management. Right now i dont have a job nor am i having any admits from the MBA institutes. I dont intend to go for IT job again and i feel it would nt be a good idea to go for core mech job as i have to appear for MBA exams again this yr. I am in a fix.
I am thinking of taking up some professional course..Please advise me on the same. any other suggestions would also go long way in helping me out...
Thank u all for ur efforts!!

Mohit,
the best option would be to look for a job. what kind of a professional course would you do? i understand that you would not be interested in going back to IT, and at the same time a core tech job would take up too much of your time, but please look at other avenues for jobs too. you could take up teaching at some college, you can work in an NGO, if you are interested in that. you can teach in a coaching institute like TIME or IMS. please explore job opportunities before you come to any decision

Hi Puys,
After reading lots of queries posted by many of the members, I have decided to share the pain I am undergoing & I request for an advice.
I am Mech Engg from DCE (2006). I got placed in an IT MNC & worked there for 1.5 yrs but IT didnt interest me. So I got into Marketing(my passion). The problem is work is more like BPO.
Please suggest what should be done.

That's a very common problem buddy!!
without proper qualification and work-ex, companies hire marketing guys for tele-marketing and things in those lines.
get an MBA, specialize in the domain that interests you, and then hunt for a marketing job.
