Hi Samarth Welcome to Pagalguy. Whether you should take up CAT again depends entirely on the level of college you would be satisfied with.If you feel that SIIB is a college you are content with,go for it. GMAT is also an option provided you are looking at the cost factor and benefits involved.
As for the 10th/12th marks weightage,u can PM me your id. I will mail u the same.
Morover , its better to set realistic goals with the static academic performance/profile i have ..if only IIMC can call me with this profile...then it is too much of a risk...even if i crack CAT....what abt other b-schools other than IIMs who take acads into consideration to such extent..i knw SP Jain is qute particular..
This year was my second attempt at MBA entrances after the one in my final year at college .. I have been waitlisted at 58 for mdi - pgpm (after a buffer of 210 calls this time) .. as per last years' trends i shd make it ..I also have a IIT-B wailist (62)
am a BE passout from MIT, manipal (2008 batch) .. working at verizon, chennai for the past 10 months (as so many IT professionals would agree ..my work too is very boring)..had calls this year from xl, fms, mdi, nitie, iit-b, iift, ximb ..didnt convert any ..though my waitlist at mdi most probably happened due to my high cat score ..now, had i been really fit n ready to take up an MBA ..i shd have converted xl or fms irrespective of the written score ..so my queries:
1. shd i take up an mba this year or wait again for one more year (or maybe explore some other career) so that I might get thru better colleges next year .. now this proposition becomes interesting as CAT is all set to be online from this year ..uncertain again my acads 10th- 80% 12th- 81% ..so, acc. to current criteria, IIM a,b,l,s will never call me at whatever cat score
2. rankings everywhere rate mdi higher than iit-b ..coz maybe mdi is older ..but iit-b has a relatively small batch size ..104 in total (62 general) ..means more opportunites ..also, i belong to delhi so mdi that way would be preferable (isnt it important) ..which one is preferable ?
I understand the last query threads the fine line of comparison of b-schools but still if anyone could help ..thanks
How can u arrive at this conclusion:
my acads 10th- 80% 12th- 81% ..so, acc. to current criteria, IIM a,b,l,s will never call me at whatever cat score"....??????? Can u elucidate in this regard?...i think there are definite weightages attatched to all these figures...but how can u make a definite conclusion regarding that...i have got 84.2 in 10th, 69.6 in 12th and 72.6 in BTech...shud stop hoping to get any IIM Call irresepctive of my CAT score?
What I wanted to convey was that according to the criteria IIM A,B,L,S had .. I have a very less chance of getting their call ..
yes there are definite weightages attached to these ..but still I was just being realistic ..

With the exam going from a paper based to a computer based one, we cannot judge as to the IIM's would give calls. One would only know after the calls have come as to what was the criteria. It happened in CAT '08,no one was aware that there would be weightage for acads, but only after calls were given did everybody know the exact weightage. So right now do not think whether you will get a call or not, simply prepare your best and give your best shot at the exam. Who knows the selection creiteria might change as its a computer based test now (CBT). ATB for the prep!!
I am a BE Mechanical graduated in 2007. Worked for 1 year in a manufacturing company in PPC. Then I quit my job to focus on CAT 2008.
But it did not turn out to be a good season for me. Managed to get a few decent interview calls. Got 2 rejects (SIOM and SIMSR) so far while there is one more interview (Welingkar) scheduled in a few days.
I knew that my CAT performance was not all that good and I have been looking out for a job since dec 08, but havent manage to get one so far.
In Feb I realised that its time I started looking for some backup. I had been doing some web development during my engg days ... (although only static web pages that too using code generators). So I decided to start from there. 3 months down the line, I self learned the markup and scripting languages and the other necessary stuff and have started building web pages... not making any money as of yet but I can see some things working out in the future if I continue..
Now, I have still got a chance at welingkar and I have also taken Maharastra CET...my score is insufficient for the top 5 institutes but I am sure I ll make it to 'SOME' college in the end. But I dont want to get into 'SOME' college!
My dilemma is whether to take admission in 'SOME' institute or do freelance development for 1 year and take CAT one more time.. ...in that case -
1) WIll B-schools be keen to take me? .. I mean I dont expect them to count my experience but .. will my application be ruled out right away because I freelance?
2) Secondly, I am still looking out for a job... so the same problem wrt jobs.. I have already started facing the obvious question 'What I have been doing all this while?' from recruiters and when I say Web development.... i think I lose it there.. Saying I did nothing would be disastrous imo!
CAN ANYBODY ELABORATE ON THE OPTIONS OF STUDYING FURTHER AFTER MBA,MMS,PGDBM......I MEAN WATS FELLOW MANAGEMENT PROGRM??....WAT ABOUT PHD IN MBA N ALL..?? WATS D SCENARIO N PROSPECTS..??WATS D PROCEDURE....WHOS ELLIGIBLE....??
I KNOW THESE R LOTS OF QUESTIONS...BUT PLEASE HELP:banghead:....AM TOTALLY LOST..
Life has its ironies... And I have turned out to be one of them.
Had been a decent student till high school. Got 85% in 10th and 12th both.
Wanted to be a lawyer, so just took the law exams, couldn't get through any good law school. So moved out of my small town to study in our 'Rajdhani' - Dilli and that also in DU... Three years sailed through with i paying no respect to my so called Honours course in physics...
So after this three year mega stint :banghead:.. I was back to square one... And considering the high rider of the self appreciation wave i was.. i decided not to take up any placements from campus and believe me guys, during my graduation year.. there were some really good offers on campus..
Plus since i had learned nothing in physics.. master's was definitely not an option.. So i very casually packed my bags and did 2 months of unpaid work with an NGO and then started preparing for CAT while sitting on my a** at home...
I did study this time... did everything that was suppose to be done.. had fun too.. traveled a bit...
Then took all the management exams.. IRMA, CAT, IIFT, SNAP, XAT, FMS TISS, MFC and MBE-DU and even DU-Law...
The best part.. got a decent score in all of them but not good enough for a call... 96 in CAT, 95 in XAT, 97 in IRMA etc.. Managed to get 2 calls .. TISS and MBE-DU ( Had not filled anything except for IIM, SPJAIN and XLRI)
Got a reject from TISS and waitlisted at MBE, which should clear considering last year's statistics.
Also qualified the entrance for DU-Law and sat for IGIDR too for M.sc in Economics (result is due)...
Plus applied for a couple of jobs too and just got an offer today from a good firm but "ok" package
Now the questions....
What should i do.. I mean should i sit for CAT again.. Take up the job and sit for CAT/XAT/FMS.. Take DU-LAW or go for MBE or if i convert any of the economics exams i am taking like IGIDR, JNU and DU..
To be honest, a part of me really wants to study.. study and try for civil services but there is another part which wants to satisfy parents expectations who have started coming to the conclusion that i am nothing but a big talker... If i start preparing for civil services, it will take atleast 2-3 years for me to show some output which, by the way, may or may not be in my favour.
But if i take the job.. take CAT this year or the next.. get into a good B-school, the returs wuill start showing instantaneously but i have no idea how i will feel later in my life.. Will i be doing justice to my own goals (which still seem very hazy).
I know its been a really long post and i am really sorry for it.. But pUys please.. I am in desparate need for advice and help...
And now for the irony part..... I have been working a career counsellor for teenagers for the past 2 years...

Hi "Sociopath" Your dilemma is something that a lot of people have gone through in different capacities at various points of time(yours truly included). So IMHO,first thing to do would be sit down and relax and think about what is it that you really want:in terms of career and so in life.Would a career in the civil services really satisfy you or would an mba really propel you on the path to success? Whatever you choose,it must be your own call entirely and be free of influence of all external factors. All the best.
P.S Take up a job,if you are planning to prepare for mba.
I am a 2008 graduate in Chemistry, joined an IT firm and the recession bug bit me big time. Left the company in 4 months. Searched for a job for 2 months, day and night. I am finally working with a media house at a decent profile.
My dilemma has been stated point wise, as follows:
1. My job hours and travel time are such that I cannot start preparing for CAT. Is it too late to start for CAT 2009? 2. If I leave my job (which is again 4 months now) it would reflect as a gap of a year, should I take up a PG Diploma in management? IF yes, could anyone help me with good colleges in Delhi? 3. My career path has been kind of diverse. Fro \m chemistry, to IT, to marketing. What kind of effect would it have on my resume and if I get any calls?
Response awaited.
P.S. I am too keen to get into a very good MBA college in 2010. My decisions are based on what is suited for getting into a good college.

Hi Surabhi
I suppose that most of the experienced puys would agree with me when I say that its definitely not late to start prep for CAT'09.There is still enough time to prepare well for CAT.And at this juncture of your career and given the present market conditions,it would be prudent not to quit your job, unless you have better options in hand.I know its hard enough working hard in office all day and then coming back & even thinking of studying for CAT.You WILL have to figure out ways to save time/reduce travel time/shift nearer to offc etc.kuch paane k liye kuch to khona padega hi After all,its your career and you will have to think smartly to prop it up. Giving CAT a shot is a better option anyday than just getting admitted in anY PG diploma college and even the returns at the end of the course would be significantly lesser.
A diverse career track,if anything, can be of advantage of you(provided you present it well in interviews ).It can give you a varied profile, which is definitely advantageous.

hi naiquevin
First of all,I totally empathise with you and would like to salute your spirit. Not many people manage to hold on and fight as steadfastly as you have done in the circumstances. So,stop feeling that guilty that you did something wrong by quitting the job.Even if wasn't a wise career move, its anyway past.Hence no point bothering about it. What you do need to think about is how to justify your occupation during the period after quitting your job and the bschool interview.IMHO,you can say that you were working on web developement and giving your entrepreneurial dreams a shot.Maybe it don't work out,but you can always be proud of the fact that you tried something thats not run-of-the-mill. B-schools do look for diversity and hence you do stand a good chance of getting selected. About your job hunt,i suggest keep both your options open(as in try for both mech n web dev jobs).Saying that you were caught up with personal probs and did a bit of web dev on your own sounds the sensible approach to me.

If you don't want to spoil your job profile then do not do it. Yes, you can very well prepare for CAT and other entrance exams and can get into a good college. Give as many entrance exams as you can and you will surely get a decent college, if your preparation has been good enough. Utilize this time to best of your abilities, learn something side by if you wanted to learn like certification courses etc. Your profile is decent enough and you can get into a good college.

There are people who are in a similar situation like yours, so don't worry just study, but I would suggest that you can do one or more of the following things:
1. Volunteer in any NGO for social work 2. Enrol yourself in a distance learning/part time course in a subject of your interest- perhaps a 6 month/1 year course 3. Join a foreign language course 4. Teach in a coaching institute- Engg/MBA or if you don't mind even school students
If you can portray to the PI panel that having no job was due to unfortunate circumstances, but still you did something constructive in the spare time along with your preparation for the MBA exams- it should be taken positively
Could someone please explain me the definition of Industry sponsored candidates? If I just take LWP for any course than will I be a Industry sponsored candidate. Or is it like the company needs to pay my fees as well either full or partial?

Well my previous thread was closed as I didn't post here. Anyways, here is my dilemma:
I am a final year B.Tech(IT) student of a college affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, preparing for my final sem exams which will be over on May 28th. I have already got placed, last year, in a company called Infogain that is in Noida. They are offering me a stipend of Rs. 2500(reduced from Rs.7500 because of the recession which u all know) although I don't know what my position or duties will be. My job is to start from July this year. I am feeling a bit disinclined to go for it because of the low salary. I haven't given any MBA exams yet & am thinking of giving them after I complete my BTech in May. So, what do you guys suggest ? I have got 84% in 10th, 67.2% in 12th.
