Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Well my previous thread was closed as I didn't post here. Anyways, here is my dilemma:

I am a final year B.Tech(IT) student of a college affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, preparing for my final sem exams which will be over on May 28th. I have already got placed, last year, in a company called Infogain that is in Noida. They are offering me a stipend of Rs. 2500(reduced from Rs.7500 because of the recession which u all know) although I don't know what my position or duties will be. My job is to start from July this year. I am feeling a bit disinclined to go for it because of the low salary. I haven't given any MBA exams yet & am thinking of giving them after I complete my BTech in May. So, what do you guys suggest ? I have got 84% in 10th, 67.2% in 12th.

hey.. the best option for you would be to search for a better paying job..
As you have mentioned you have time till July.. If software is not your thing, start looking for jobs in PSU's.. With the current market scenario, a government job would be the ideal one for you to park your seat..
Regarding your MBA, anyways you have to wait till atleast November, at which time the MBA exam season begins..

Ayush and Swapnil: For you to be Industry sponsored (the latter being the operational word), you will have to demonstrate to the adcomm that your company is actively supporting you in your educational endevours (read --> will pay for your tuition). If the rest of your credentials (test scores, apps) are strong, for the b-school this is a win-win situation. There is a high possibility that you'll go back to your sponsoring organisation (financial, legal, ethical ramifications), so there's less of a pressure for the school to place you. LWP (leave w/o pay) doesn't say that the company is actively supporting you.

This is pretty common in top-tier consulting firms and also the biggies in the industry.

Hope that addresses your query.

You are just a fresher and have not even worked once. I totally agree that the stipend is very.very low but see how the work is and how do you find yourself in the field. Of course, you can appear for all the MBA entrance exams and your profile isn't that bad too, your final exam is still in your hand.

Every company or work environment teaches you something and this experience can't be taught. You would be in a better frame of mind to take up the field you want or continue your job. Doing a MBA after some experience will only add to your profile and moreover give you a better selection for your preferred stream of work.

Many people do a MBA in a certain field because of the glamour attached to it and the pay package but in the end move to a totally different arena. So judge the work, know your abilities and then opt for a MBA degree. Meanwhile you can start preparing for the exams and keep them as getting into one of the best b-schools is not a easy task.

Good luck mate and don't be disheartened by the low stipend, to give you a boost, I know people who are engineers and MBA who are jobless for months now. So grab the opportunity and do well.

Hi All,

I am in dilemma about continuing my job or perpare for cat-09. I appeared for cat-08 and got a decent percentile in QA and DI but screwed in VA. I had an exp of 33 months in an MNC-IT industry and I really hate this job now because of politics and pressure. I want to live up my dream of doing PG from a reputed institute. I am planning to quit my job in mid Aug and then fully prepare for CAT. I want to join only top 20 colleges
So will you please suggest what I should do. Is my decision to leave the job had a negative impact if somehow I managed to appear for interview of good college.

Leaving your job because you hate it, is an absolutely wise decision to take. But the god forbid if you your MBA plans don't go as you wish then you won't have a backup.

If you are financially sound, you can take this step. It won't really affect your interview as you already have enough experience to back up. Maybe after the exam season you could try some volunteer work at NGOs or peruse any other hobby of yours to add to your application.

Thanks,
I would like to join some NGO's but I don't have any info abt then. If you know some of them please list it out.

It depends upon the place you are living and the kind of NGO you would be interested in working (like NGOs based on environment, chid care, domestic violence etc). Find some here- IndianNGOs.com

Hello All,

All through my life, I had never thought about getting into a B school. I am one of those who were told from childhood that they should aim to become either a engineer or a doctor. MBA was not even an option! ..so you already know where I am coming from !!

I have almost 8 years of industry experience in IT. Am leading a team of SAP Technical guys working on data warehousing and other development tools. Life has been rosy this far with some good onsite assignments and my job with a top mnc leaving not much to complain about. But there's a catch.. Of late I have been reading some blogs/posts/articles related to management in various websites and publications. I think I definitely am motivated to go to a B-School to further hone my skills and take my career to the next level(I seriously believe my career will stagnate pretty soon if I don't take the steps now, at the age of 28 ). Some of my colleagues are already in top league B schools because they knew they had to be there from the start...

To give a brief background on my education, I have done a very modest bachelors in electronics from delhi university with a 3 year diploma program from NIIT in parallel. While working I managed to complete my MCA through correspondence almost over 6 years (thanks to my long foreign assignment and hectic work commitments). My percentages have been in the 60-65% range and I haven't had many awards/recognitions in my career ( which would have been a definite plus). What I do know is that there is a strong urge to leave everything behind( I mean even after 8 years of technical experience I do not mind starting with something completely different and not related to the current 'techie' job that I am doing at the moment). Confusion is the all important 'what' and 'how'!!. I mean since I had not even considered a career in management/business untill a few weeks ago, I am going through many pages and thread here in PG and other websites to learn about GMAT prep, b-schools, career advice and such.. its almost as if I am out of college and badly searching for a job. Even though I have a secure job, the 'calling' from within is pretty strong to do something different but there is no specific direction that I know to concentrate on.

so, here i am... typing my first post and looking for advice from the forum members.I have never been academically bright but I am very quick with my work(something that few managers have commended upon). And I do know that I WANT and NEED to do a decent MBA or PG(preferably outside India).

So guys & gals, having heard my story and background, how bright do you think my chances are of getting into a good MBA school(assuming that I do get a good score in GMAT -fingers X!). I would also like to know what kind of GMAT score should I target on so that I have something to support my average educational history..

I know I may be wasting the time of forum members by asking rather vague and fundamental questions. But this is where I stand as of date. All I need is an initial push, some direction and advice to go forward.

comments would be much appreciated...

Hello all,
i m in confusion, i have given cat 2 times, first when i was in final yr of b.tech and managed to get 94%ile, this boasted my morale and i thought to try it 1 more time. At that time, i had 2 offers in hand, one with Accenture and another with a production company with a bond of 3 yrs, as it was a fertilizer company, matching my profile as a chemical engg, near to home and could give me enuf time to prepare, i decided to join tht company.
initially, i ws in general shift(8 to 5:30) and sunday off, which ws perfect for my prep for cat 08 so i thought it to be right decision. i started preparing for cat 08 and there was a little pressure in the company to perform but i managed it all with my preparation....but then i started giving my mocks and found that i desperately needed sumone or a group of people with whom i can discuss questions and come to a right conclusion, as it is a factory and situated away from the city it ws not possible to go to coaching in nearby city regularly.
i gave efforts but all in vain as my doubts were still doubts and due to some carelessness it increased....there was no one preparing for cat in the company....i got frustrated but i nvr thought to give up....rarely i got my %iles > 95, it ws demoroling for me as i quit accenture for cat and now this happened.
i gave cat...n found in first half tht i wud not b able to crack it...n i got 92%ile...no calls.
i am still in that company and now i m in shifts( 6 to 2 then 2 to 10 then 10 to 6) and friday off thus cant go for giving mocks on sunday.
pressure has increased manyfolds, sometimes i have to do 16hrs shifts also, no time to think bout cat wen working. but i dont wanna give up.
right now i have 2 options, either to prepare for cat 09 which is goin online this yr and can prove to be bane for some people, with 5 months to go or to prepare for job in any govt company or any designing company which can give me city location and general shifts with sunday off and any group preparing for cat thus helping my preparation more but it will be cat 10 then.
i have one more option to leave this job and go for full time preparation for cat 09, but then everything will be at stake and i will be more pressurised to perform thus can lead to bad results.
now i dont know wat to do, to start preparing or to wait 1 yr for a good job and then prepare.
plz help me

NayaPaagal,

It's not uncommon to go through that phase after putting in 5-6-8 years of your life in a particular field. So I hear you. Loud and clear, buddy.

You seem pretty clear after all that introspection that you want to pursue the MBA. That's a good start. 50% of the confusion that you talk about has been taken care of.
You are quite articulate and your written communication is pretty good. Two more things going in your favour for the MBA application process.

If you browse through the various threads (easier said than done), you'll find similar voices and echoes. If you like a good response, address your specific query to that poster either on the same forum or as a private message.

As you go along, your queries will also become more specific and focussed.

So keep that momentum up, keep your expectations under check and you'll soon have a more focussed roadmap in place.
Hi "Sociopath"
Your dilemma is something that a lot of people have gone through in different capacities at various points of time(yours truly included). So IMHO,first thing to do would be sit down and relax and think about what is it that you really want:in terms of career and so in life.Would a career in the civil services really satisfy you or would an mba really propel you on the path to success?
Whatever you choose,it must be your own call entirely and be free of influence of all external factors.
All the best.

P.S Take up a job,if you are planning to prepare for mba.

if u have managed 95 it makes sense to try CAT again n get into a good bschool like the IIMs
y did u leave those 'good' offers on campus ?? n did career counselling ??

PS : u urself need career counselling n u say u have been doin that for kids .....god save their future 😉

Thnx guys...Well, I will post my resume on the internet after my exams are over & see if I get a better salary at some place else. If not, I still have the option to continue at Noida, I will start preparing once my exams are over. The only problem will be the time that I will have to squeeze for the preps but then again.....it all depends once I start working.

I am a 2007 B.tech chem engg. and have 15 months of experience so far, with a software company.
I've never faced the CAT before, but i've been through a year of TIME coaching.
Thing is I'm ready to quit and take my chances with the CAT09.

The move sounds dumb, but so does sticking with the company and attempting the CAT with poor preparation. Seen too many guys trying to prepare and not take it seriously. Either your work gets affected or the preparation.

This being the decision i have to take, I am quite muddled and am not able to think clear. Any suggestions (Plz.) ?

PS : u urself need career counselling n u say u have been doin that for kids .....god save their future ;-)

Even I had such opinion until I met a few career counselors (not all professionals , some self claimed) ... and I am saying this out of personal experience...

that this guy might be the perfect counsellor!.... because he has made some career mistakes and so he can advise ppl to avoid them . Plus he must have considered many options and so he knows about various avenues..

2 of the 3 ppl I spoke to advised me to pak my bags and head to some US university for an MS degree, in spite of knowing that I am an MBA aspirant. And the reason they give is the same old - "By the time you graduate........." thing:|. I doubt if they know anything else

PS> I am not against career counsellors in general. May be I havent met the right guys yet..

If you dont have any other problem with your job apart from less time to study for CAT, dont quit.
In the present situation, holding on to your job would be the right thing to do... Dont quit job for something like CAT where there is so much uncertainty.
And look around these forums, you will find so many working professionals who manage to crack CAT and they will be eager to help you. You should feel lucky that you stumbled upon Pagalguy before taking any such decision...

Hi,

Right now I am doing Executive MBA. For my final semester i need to choose the specialization of the Degree. I bit confused on this.

As an IT guy(5+ years Esp) I could take either IT Management or Software Marketing. What will be the best for my career growth?

-Thanks in Advance,
Santosh

Hi,

So, have finally decided that I need an MBA to further my career goals. I have an idea as to what I would be doing post MBA but need your opinions, suggestions on the same. Here's my profile summary:
Engineering graduate from NIT, Trichy
Present Designation: Consultant
Job Profile:
I perform Business Analysis and map customers existing business to Oracles ERP product (E-business suite-Oracle Applications). Have been working in ERP area as Functional Consultant.
Total Work Experience - 9 yrs (By the time I apply).Have worked with top 2 software companies of India.
Was involved in extra curricular activities during college days.
After working in ERP, I realized its very important to have a hands on experience in the industry before getting into consulting arena. Not to say that hands on is a limiting factor but I personally have felt that folks having a manufacturing /domain experience have more realistic solutions to offer.
I dont think I want to do Marketing/Sales/Finance jobs. Since my domain experience has been in IT and Indian offshoring business.Post MBA , I want to utilize my 9 yrs of IT experience along with MBA degree by offering consulting services to clients.
Based on my profile above, I have following questions:
1. Can you please tell me in which capacity will a business consulting company be able to utilize my profile? In other words, what are my prospects of getting into IT strategy consulting practice of a Business Consulting Firm?
2. List top b-schools specializing in Consulting profiles?
3. What are the alternate professions/jobs I can vouch for after completing my MBA ? This is just a back up plan.
Thanks for going through this post. Also,I want to do my MBA from a US B-School.

Hi,

I want to do my specialization in Business Intelligence and Management Science as I am more interested in knowing about the Quantitaive Methods used in the research on the basis of which decisions are taken in Finance, Marketing and Operations.

Can anyone please tell what are the career prospects if I want to take electives related to above mentioned field only and not particularly in Finance, Marketing, Consultancy or Operations as such.

Please do tell me the colleges which offer specialization in above field?

Welcome to the club!! I was in a similar situation last year.:banghead: I have done decent if not something very great. Secured 97%ile in CAT and 86.5 in SNAP. Had some 7 calls in all. And finally converted SIBM, SIIB, TAPMI calls. Going to join SIBM this year. 😃 And it is my last few days at my company. By the time I quit, I will be having 32 months of experience. I understand that any achievement in life takes a lot to be put at stake. I will just tell u what I did. Rest is for u to decide. :)

I did not quit my job though I badly wanted to. A few good souls on PG advised me not to, saying that these political conditions and pressure situations are exactly what u need to fuel the fire in ur belly for better preps. They were proved right. And believe me, if u r able to handle all such pressures and crack it inspite of all, it gives u a never before confidence to face whatever comes ahead. In fact that will teach u what management is all about. It makes u so strong mentally that u start treating CAT as just another exam or a stepping stone. This is exactly the mind set one needs to crack CAT at the end of the day. And interviews are then just a cake walk as u wud have done a lot of introspection about each and every move of ur life that u will justify urself as an ideal candidate. Having a job in hand always is better and helps to avoid the tricky questions on "Why did u quit?", "Were u unable to handle the pressures?" and "Why NGO and now MBA?" and God forbid....in these days of recession "Were u laid off?"

But there are of course a few catches. U will have to take out time for studying anyhow. If u seriously want to go this year, u will manage it. Concentrate on analyzing ur mocks. And sort out all ur weak areas one by one. U just have to keep ur goal of doing MBA absolutely clear in ur mind, focus on it solely and not drift apart for pursuing anything else... (read --> onsite assignments, awards, better appraisals, higher position in ur team/company et al). U might even have to give off ur place to ur juniors if such a need arises. But be ready for all. In other words, Moh Maya Chhod Do . It is a big risk but will be worth if it pays off.... If u look around, u can find quite a few ppl in ur condition.... Interact with them... Share ur plans with sufficient discretion....As for politics, try to be diplomatic with ur superiors, and accomodating with ur peers. If that doesn't work, move to another team.:banghead: If that too doesn't work and if u have good financial backing, there is no problem in quitting. But I have seen some of my peers quitting their jobs and then somehow not making it and then again struggling to find another job. 😞 It is a very scary situation to be in, in such times. Whereas God forbid, even if u fail to make it, u can always move to another job or make a turn-around in ur current one if u end up with right people.:lookround:

So weigh all ur pros and cons properly and then make a decision. Hope my story helps u a little bit. All the very best 😃
