the only score that will matter is your cat score besides the scores in your 10th and 12th or equivalent which shud be i guess 50% n above to be eligible, rest you can highlight your strong points and be well prepared with commonly asked questions in the second round (PI) ... so dnt let yourself down becus of your scores in your master...all they will test is wether you have the "management" material in you or not....this is my opinion:)

hi everyone....

>>>> I AM SORRY for the long-long essay i am goin to write,,, But PLZ HELP!!!!

here`s my story...
I am a guy whoz currently goin to start with the third year of his B.TECH degree. Actually, i DIDN`T score good marks in the past two years and the upcomin years are gonna be no different, i presume.... Becuase engineerin is just nt my line. now. i hv two years with me . and i want to go in for a dedicated study so that i can become successful... i hv a few questions for all of you...

1. i hv heard that EVEN if you crack the CAT,,, the guys at the IIM`s or other good institutions(For MBA of course) ... really take into account ,the marks that you have scored in your bachelor`s degree and that many people who hv scored REALLY WELL (say, above 98 percentile) never got any calls from the IIM`s just cz they had a poor score in their bachelors..

2. AND then i hv heard tht the marks that we hv already scored in graduation really dont matter if we score good marks in the IAS exam,, and all tht matters is the IAS ranking.
SO .. i feel tht IAS is a safe bet for me,..

3. Is this the right time to start preparin for cat or IAS,,,

4. How much time will it take for me to crack Both of em...

5. How important is WORK-Experience ?? are they given any preference during the selections???

I will give all it takes for the preparations.. I Just want to choose ONE OF THEM- IAS OR IIM...
so.. please tell me your views... DO i REALLY HV A RISK in MBA if i hv poor marks in B.TECH.. if it is so,,, then i think i`ll go for IAS ....

THANK YOU (If u really read such a long story)..
PLZ TELL ME YOUR VIEWS....

1) That is not entirely true. IIM's give a lot of weightage to CAT. so if your performance is good in CAT, you will in most certainty get a call. getting the final admission is dependent on a lot of things including your academics.

2) i dont have much clue

3) yes this is a great time to start preparing for CAT. aspirants generally start preparing from July or August. offcourse, the time frame depends on your comfort level. there have been people who study for just a couple of months and get high percentiles, while others have been studying for many years and still dont manage a decent percentile.

4)

5) yes certainly. work ex is important. having said that, i dont mean that people without work-ex will not be selected.

hey purple_green31...
dont get dejected becus of your low scores in your acads...even though its equally important to be practical and assess yourself before giving cat that wether you can crack it or not...for that you need to prepare FOR the CAT wrttn phase and then your second round....now let me ans your questions part by part.Firstly to get into an IIM you need to have very high score which shud make up for your poor profile....the top 100 odd scorers are called blindly without their profiles been checked...secondly if you get thru the first phase then you acads do hold some points but there are other more imp. areas like GD, PI, your exp which are also taken into account and you need to focus on them which are in your hands, its not alwayz true that an IIT guy only cracks IIM there are many more people who dnt have a gud profile yet manage to bag a seat in the IIMS, it sure is tough but all you need to be is YOU to be there....:)

Chinese is an option to consider. Even German and French are sought after foreign languages. Japanese is also there. With your finance background you could work as an interpreter for foreign delegates in their business meetings and conferences. Japanese takes arnd four years to master, French and German around three years.

Hello.
Well let me first brief my condition. I am a commerce graduate and i graduated in year 2005. Due to some family issues I was unable to proceed further for my higher studies and even was unable to do a job. Now when the conditions are favourable, just this april i got a job of business development manager in an M.N.C. I was planning to write cat of this year and was very confident. But i came across to some people and they told me that i even do not stand a chance to get into IIMS, no matter how much do i score in CAT, just because i do not have a nice 4 or 5 years experience and the top of that i was just an average scorer in my schools and graduation. So i am just getting hopeless and am losing my confidence. Are they true. Please help me.

First of all congrats on the job... you should be feeling confident that you have managed to bag up a job in difficult times.

Regarding your concerns -

IIMs, do consider acads during their selection processes...but as long as its not an eligibility criteria, you can always give it a try. Its nowhere mentioned that one needs to score some min marks to apply and appear for the test.

On the same note, its true that work exp matters, but they are more keen on having a balanced batch in terms of background and experience. So, its not that they are only looking for people with 4-5 years of experience.

Your profile is pretty decent. And now that you have got a job as a manager, by the time you ll get calls for 2010 admits, it will be an even more relevant one..

Apart from that, imo, if you want to write CAT, you should do it!
Dont cancel your plans just because people tell you something that they themselves donot know.

hi puys !!

im a may 2008 BE passout from Bhilai Institue of Technology and i was placed in hexaware technology whose joining has not come due to the recession . its been over a year that im at home waiting for my joining . my other friends selected in CTS and elsewhere too have not got their joining.
guys i need ur suggestion.. i feel like im going thru the worst phase of my life..to be frank when my college got over my joining was due in september . i studied really hard for CAT in that period..knowing that i have a job in hand so i had no tension...my initial plan was to work for 2-3 years and then get into a good college..then the lehman brothers bankruptcy happened ..and my joining has not come since then..i have been forced to join a company where the work is shit..shit means shit and im very worried...i dont know what to do ...study for CAT or look for a job in a market where there are no jobs...im very irritated..i came across similar cases when i was going thru alll i wanted to speak about CAT of 2001 when there was a similar recession...but even that time ppl got an opportunity to write infosys or TCS off campus in a period of 5-6 months..i have really sacrificed a lot now..im really frustrated !! i have lost the confidence to crack CAT now ..dont know what to do...i really feel one shud hav a good career to back upon if CAT doesnt happen..which i dont have...im really getting deperate and im loosing my hope.. !!

Hi Rohit, do not be upset. Listen first of all you need to set the priorities in your career. As long as i understand your condition u want to settle down as soon as possible and the other hand you dont want to take any risk. Isnt it? What i will suggest you is first of all chill out for a moment and keep preparing for CAT.:cheerio::cheerio:Recession is an epidemic problem and almost everybody is affected. So keep looking for a better job and also keep preparing. I give you a clear picture of management that i have learnt as i am already into it. I am the youngest of all the people around me and i have MBAs everywhere and they can hardly speak english!!!!! So where is the deal? You better keep preparing, dont loose your hope and 1 thing that i will suggest you is also try snap, xat, fms, gmat etc. If you are really honest with your preparations you will secure at least one seat in top 10, then it doesnt matter than you are doing a job or not. And 1 personal advice for you, try for a job in companies at gurgaon. They are still hiring fresher engineers. My condition was worse than yours but i managed to get a job in this recession. And if i had not got that i still had tried to crack CAT coz i know that top 10 can give you what you need. So keep trying dude, if you can manage to do well in this bad days then you are the ultimate management machine. Isnt ? So keep both of them parallel. It is possible believe me. Good luck:cheerio:

Hello frns,
This is my profile.

12th-94 (ditto)
BE-88 (from ceg anna univ).
Fresher passed out in 2009.
I know that my profile is good.
I've made it to VGSoM in 2nd list, the last name being mine(selected in handicapped category). I'm always a confident guy. But even with these acads, i didn't find a job except for cts (Well, i'm a civil engineer). That has really demotivated me. Adding fuel to the fire is the MBA interview results. Got rejected in all 4 attended(all 1st lists). Apart from these issues, i really had some personal prob in the last 6 months. I'm now feeling physically and mentally unfit (i don't know whether that is true or my perception, since i used to reach my goals without too much prob). I don't know what to do, whether to join VGSoM r wait for another year to crack CAT. I'm in the dilemma because i don't know whether i could cope with the studies or not and i dunno Hindi. So, i'm confused. But, i believe i can achieve. Somebody Plz help me out. Thnx in adv.

If you want to get into copywriting in Advertising then experience is your degree. You could start working under someone for a meagre or no pay in the beginning and then make your stand; start as an intern at any Ad agency.
If you want to diversify your chances in Advertising then do an MBA. With the current year gone you have one shot left at the new MBA course at Manipal university: http://www.manipal.edu/manipalsite/Users/Colsubpage.aspx?Pgid=1002&ID;=1&collegeid;=30

dude it completely depends on " how much u can bet on urself"!! fore on pg rankin list(most authentic in india) ranks at arnd 40!!
94%ile says u hav room 4 improvement! and workex at infy adds to ur ur profile (exp 2 years)... u can probably/definitely land on b8r colgs!!

avg package last year(b4 recession) at fore ws 8.0lacs... with fresher profile say u get 6.0lacs! if u r satisfied with dt offering..join ..!

lookin for higher profile.. take work ex ..dn MBA!

life is a game ..stakes r always high.. place ur bet!!

Hello All

Professionally I am a Software Engineer working with a website development company(.net), just about to complete 2 years in this sector.

Educationwise I completed my B.Tech. in july 2007, just after completion of degree, jumped into a job without thinking anything.

However surviving easily in current firm too. 2 years for this job will be completed in coming month july.

Joined this forum, quite obvious, i m looking for doing an MBA.

But at this moment of recession, I am quite scared about preparation of CAT or other exams on quitting job.

For me to prepare with job will be quite tough, because they suck me out for atleast 12 hours daily, after that sincere preparation is not at all possible.

I need suggestion, after 2 years of experience in IT field, with B.Tech in electronics and communcation stream, which B School should I opt for so that my work experience could add to my MBA.

I had prepared for CAT in 2006, but some 70 percentile, which weren't sufficient to be in good B School.

After doing B Tech from some unrecognized college, now I dont want to do MBA from some unreputed college, definitely my goal is top 25 B Schools.

From today if I see, some 5 months are only left, will I be able to make it, I means would be feasible, how much effort shall I need to put to make it, Ofcourse nothing is impossible, but then also will 5 months preparation will help, i am ready to join some coaching too for it, previously when I was doing my degree, I had joined Career Launcher.

So finally shall I quit the job or should I stick to job in this moment of recession, or shall go for MBA next year, but then also I would be just making it late.

I have heard this is the best time to go for MBA, as after 3 years when my MBA will be completed, market will be very good.

Looking for responses, as sometimes I feel that I have been caught in the undertow.

Thanks!!

hello friends,
Myself shashank, working for an IT company in B'lore from past 2 years. Am sure that many puys might have asked this same question before. I want to do MBA in a good BSchool. But i can't do 2 things at a same time, ie., work and study. So i've decided to quit job this december and want to dedicate 1 complete year for CAT-10. I want to improve myself in all possible ways in this span of time, because am a very slow learner, and i don't want to be dumb after joining the BSchool. But my friends are discouraging me telling that, if i leave job @ this time then ill repent in future. I am really confused about this. Please can you people tell me whether my decision is right? Waiting eagerly for your valuable replies....

thanks,
shanky

Dudeeeeeeee No No, Start preparing now and give CAT this year. Give rest of MBA entrances too like XAT, FMS, JMET, MAT, ATMA, NMAT, SNAP etc and start preparing now itself. Waiting a whole year for CAT isn't the most sane decision. And no one is dumb, you just need to prepare yourself well and with dedication and little hard-work you easily can.
