hello friends...
i am facing a great dilemma..
i have completed my engineering from NIT Hamirpur and have a job offer from TCS as ASE..however, wd the market slump the joining has been delayed..!!
however recently i applied for the post of research analyst in a relatively small level KPO firm - and i got thru.
now i am facing a dilemma which sector to join..the name of KPO firm is GreyB Services..( its into Intellectual Property Research)
it is still a small firm but is growing very fast..( as they told me of course)..
but i think they are right ..they offered me a package of 4.1lac p.a ( big one for a fresher ;)) as compared to 3.15 p.a ofTCS..!!
now i dont know which job to join..I plan to do MBA after 1 or 2 years..which job would be better suited to my profile and which would offer better long term prospects..!!
On top of that...the recent market recession has has added to my confusion...!!
Please help me..!!
PS: I hate coding job...I just sat 4 TCS as software is the big thing today..!!
and in this KPO firm i have the job of researching new technologies..which seems quite appealing to me..!!

In My View your PS answers your concern aptly.
and any job will add to your profile as long as you are best at it.
Rest as I say always its your life and your call..!!
Best of Luck..!!
thanx a lot for the advice sir...
Although I am 90% bent on joining the KPO firm, but what worries me are the future growth prospects of KPO..the experts in the news have a mixed bag of opinions with respect of KPO..many of them project it to be the next big thing in India after BPO, but quite a lot are worried too..especially bcoz Obama's policy of offshoring work to India has been under a hood..!!:sarcasm: they are still apprehensive that if he comes to power (as is the most probable case) this economic slowdown is gonna get worse or get better..
its quite an important factor considering the fact that 70% of work in KPO sector is offshored by US firms.
Another thing I wanted to enquire is that this field of IP research, I have heard that many big MNC's have a sector devoted to IP research..(Product Companies offcourse)..am I right?? If that is the case, maybe at some point in the future, guyz like me can shift to big firms.
actually, it all boils down to the fact that if i join the KPO sector, do I have a chance that at somepoint in the future I will regret leaving the software line.?? I am ready to give my 100% to the job, but future prospects and financial security drive the employee in any organization.
I need your help in making the right decision. I dont want a lousy coding job..( actually many guyz dont like it, but its the money that drives the world, and I can see many of my classmates just goin into software just because its the only field that seems to pay ece and cse engineers well..) I dont want to be a software coolie and go for the software just for the sake of it..!!
So, considering my interest and my desire to go in for MBA aftr 1-2 years, what do you advise??Is my future and growth projected to be secure in this KPO sector..??
PS: Sorry for boring you with such a long post, but as I am still a fresher, I need my start to be on a good note..:boat:..hope u guyz help me in my dilemma..!! thankz.
tapu Saysbcoz Obama's policy of offshoring work to India has been under a hood..!
Firstly, Obama himself claims that jobs that have migrated (Read: outsourced) are not coming back to the US. Secondly, going by what he says, the worrying part would be where do the jobs migrate from India.

You can never be sure can you? I mean the economic slowdown has hit IT companies big time. If you dont want to work in a software company then do you really have a choice? And who says the work at KPOs are not dull? As far as I know most of it is routine. And the work being routine is the underlying factor why it has been outsourced.
Ultimately you need to figure out what you want. Decide as per your expectations what each job should bring you and you will figure it out.
Cheers!
And the work being routine is the underlying factor why it has been outsourced.
one slight correction. the cost being low is the underlying factor why it is being outsourced here. many ppl out there are ready to be working as call center employees, but since their Indian counterparts do it for half the price, companies prefer us.

1. Do what you enjoy. Be good at what you do. If you excel, then it is lot easier to tell your accomplishments in future applications. If you suck at your work and achieve little, it really doesn't matter where you work, the best B-schools won't care. Be a champion in what you feel like doing than be a idiot in what you don't.
2. Don't base your career decisions on economic recessions - downturns are cyclical. The smart will always find ways.

Naina, if CAT and ur CA exams are coinciding, there is nothing much anybody can do about it unless there is a miracle of sorts.
CAT comes every year, and if you are seriously interested in pursuing your MBA, then your preparation will never go waste. you can always try again next year. infact, after CA if you can get some work experience, then it will add to your profile.
i have seen a lot of professional CA's getting into top B-Schools based on their experience.
don't loose hope, and don't let this come in the way of your dream
Tough luck and All the best

thank you guyz...for your help..!!
actually there is still 1 question which is unanswered.. and that is, that do we have a sector in big MNC's (product companies) that is into IP research?
If that is the case, I can move into the field without any worry, cz avenues will alwz be open! I only have to excel and prove myself to get into a big company.!!
Please enlighten..!!:bigear:

Hi All,
I am a CAT 2008 aspirant. Taking the exam for the first time.
I am working in a leading s/w company for the past two years and 6 months. Iam thinking of one question for a long time. I appreciate if you could give some suggestions in this regard.
my question is: What if i quit my job and totally dedicate to the CAT prepartion, in this way, i think i could improve my chances to get into cluster-A colleges, if not IIMs. ( my mock-CAT scores are 80-85 percentile now, i guess i can improve to 96-98 in next 4 months, if i could dedicate to it).
If i take the break now, will the Top B-Schools make a bad impression of my profile/capacity like not able to do multi tasking or handling the presssure.
I don't like to continue with the job and try the CAT next time or the next next time, because the job is such a boring that i truly want to shift the career.
Did any of you face the similar situation and took the risky decisions??
please advise me
Thanks,
Sri

Nope, quitting and dedicating your time for CAT wont have a negative impact on your profile. it isn't as simple as i have put it, but if you can manage it in your interviews then you can actually make the decision your strength.

Before speaking abt anything else, would like to put forward a simple question:
You have done M.Tech, doing Ph.D and wanna go for MBA? Any special reasons? Because if you are doing Ph.D, you must be interested in it right? So why MBA?
As in for MBA, I think, you will perceived as any other candidate with no work ex, but yes.. . The questions I have put above will definitely be asked to you....

Well I may be late, but I have given answers to some and feel they may still help....

The choice of the elective depends on your interest. try and contact some of the puys who are doing MBA or have some knowledge abt the owrk profile you get after taking upFinance. The most important thing/BOTTOM LINE is " Take something which you will love doing after college not something that others ask you to or that is poular or that has more money."
2 is finance is more good than marketting?
Again, its your interest, on what basis are you asking? there is money in both but really isn't job satisfaction the most important? so seek that makes you feel excited...
2. is marketting more tough than finance ?
Does it matter? Will you leave something that you like only if it is difficult ? Give it a thought...
3.after selecting finance is it will be possible for me to do MBA in adverstiement or HR ?
Its always possible, you can always say that although you were intereswted, there was no HR elective in your colg, right?
3.after selecting marketting is it will be possible for me to do MBA in adverstiement or HR ?
Same as above, I don't think they will ask in the intervw what do u wanna major in?
4. in marketting is it really true that our boss give us orders to complete target than he gives us the salary ( i.e after completing target) ? , i mean i am really confused guys , that we will be managers , so is it true that we will also be doing field work , or we'll manage the employees under us..........i am not getting excatly , wt managers do , i think they manage , but i need real information from you guys...............
See, field work depends on the profile, if you are in marketing or sales, field work gives you first hand experience as to in what way people think etc. So its good and managers do manage employees but they have a lot of responsibilities apart form that.
4. is there any other good way to suggest ?
Didn't get the question !!!
5. plzz help me and reaply , soon , coz i have to fill my form on monday , so i want a wise dicission...........

Thanks Abhishek for your reply. ya u r right I m interested in research thats why I joined ph.d. I wanna do MBA to make my resume a bit heavier, to open extra opportunities for me. By this i can go for both R&D; or/and management. wat do u say? :)

Hi Jonaicha,
Welcome to PG!!!
One needs to make an informed decision before plunging into some of the important decisions that can change ones career trajectory and I hope you are into the process of it. You need to weigh whether an MBA would be a value addition to you as a person. Doing an MBA just to add to your resume will not serve the purpose rather utilize the same time to understand the industry by getting into work?
I am not sure whether you have work experience or not. If not I would advice you to get in touch with industry related people and learn more abt the skillset required in the industry you want yourself to be in.
P.S :- I do not consider an MBA essential at this point for you. I would rather advice you to take work experience and then evaluate whether an MBA is a neccessity for you.
