Thanks Abhishek for your reply. ya u r right I m interested in research thats why I joined ph.d. I wanna do MBA to make my resume a bit heavier, to open extra opportunities for me. By this i can go for both R&D; or/and management. wat do u say? :)
regards
Jonaicha,
I agree with Mats, making your resume heavy for the sake of it is unnecesssary. The point is once you do an MBA the chances are you would most probably go for the management side. And then do you think you would want to come back to research?
Go for some work-ex, you can always do an MBA at any point in your career, first have a look whether working in R&D; is good enough, may be you will not go for an MBA or if you don't find it good enough, CAT happens every year....
Hi all, I am currently working as a SE...I would like to change my career track to that of a Business Analyst or rather i would like to shift to a job involving more of a Functional aspect....
I gave the CAT for the last two years..got 96.6%ile & 98.3%ile respectively...missed the cut-off for IIMs last time around by a whisker...
But due to some personal reasons now, i wont be able to pursue a Full-time MBA...
Can any1 say that whether the certificate courses provided by NIIT Imperia in collaboration with the IIMs, are of any value...

Does any one know of any other certifications apart from the NCFM ones, which might be of any help to me??
@Diablo,
Looking at the courses, i guess you are targeting the IIM Indore one. Th point is if you can't do fulltime MBA, what are your options :
1. NIIT Imperia: We are not yet sure how good it is as there is no person we can talk to who would explain the merits/demerits. Also, its just One year old so....
2. XLRI-Reliance Program: Again, its new, not much to say about it but we have a thread .. on it and sumitrocks has said on it that you can talk to XLRI people abt your doubts so that may help.
3. Distance Learning: The good ones are: XLRI (i feel it is best bcoz they even have a written test: that means they care who they take even in distance learning), SCDl and IMT are also ok and you could find more on PG.
I know I haven't given you concrete answers: but take a look and first find more options and see what you would like to do. everything else is secondary...

Hi anjali,
Let me clear this thing first that no B-School will reject you because you are MSc Botany and a fresher. Yes, the question will definitely be put up to you: People from all variety of fields do MBA and this question is put across to Engineers, Doctors and almost to everyone because for all them doing MBA is digressing from their core field.
So, the only thing is how do you convince them that you are interested. Thesimple answer: If you really are interested, you'll do it. Ofcourse, you'll need guidance and at this point just give your best shot to CAT, get the calls and in the meantime be a regular on Pg, see the profile of people who have done it all and you'll get some ideas.
BOTTOME LINE: The MSc in botany is definitely not a hurdle, get the calls... when the time comes, there are quite a few people here who can guide you to the answer of the nagging question.

Anjali,
The way things are, your application would be standing out from the thousands that have tech/software related profiles. This would work in your favour considering how different it is.
However, keep in mind that the will ask a lot as to why you want to do a MBA (as mentioned by Federer). Be crystal clear what you want to do - and you should be golden.
thanks guys. but what kind of jobs apart (fromteaching) i can go for.Any suggesions for profile improvement?will teaching experience in normal schools accepted? or can i go for some other jobs in the mean time?help plz.

Hi Abhishek, Thanks a lot for ur reply..
I did have a chat with my manager about these courses....& surprise - surprise, even she has completed her Executive MBA in General Management from IIM-NIIT...
She said that these courses are pretty useful if u are not able to go for a full-time MBA...But she urged me to go for a full-time MBA, considering that i was pretty close to an IIM both the times i gave CAT.
She also said that firms do give weightage to such certificates albeit not as much as that given to a Full time MBA...but al the more, after completing these courses u are Certified by 1 of the IIMs gives an extra edge to u... Moreover, admissions to these courses are being conducted by an entrance test, so it does mean that IIMs are pretty choosy about which candidate is allowed admission to these courses....
She suggested that i do my CFA from AIMR-USA (atleast complete 2 levels) and then or simultaneously do this EXEC-MBA.

No job profile is looked down upon and already pointed out by Egonomist, it will make your profile stand out among the plethora of Engineers
What kind of job are you interested in basically... There are a lot of places you could work but where would you like to ???

Hey Friend,
Did you get a chance to evaluate the part-time Management Programmes available by the elite Management Institutes in our country?
Below are a few of them that I know of:
1. PGSEM : Offered by IIM Bangalore. Classes held at Bangalore and Chennai; Duration=2.5 years; Classes on fridays and saturdays. Eligibility: 2 years work experience
2. Executive Post Graduate Diploma : Offered by XLRI; Duration=30 months; Includes 165 days of classroom contact at the XLRI campus spanning across 8 visits to the campus. ; Eligibility: 3 years work experience
3. WMP : Offered by IIM Lucknow, Noida Campus; Duration=3 years; Evening classroom program; Eligibility: 3 years work experience
For further details, you may refer to their respective websites. Apart from these, similar programmes are offered by MDI, FMS, IIM Indore, IIM Kolkata, few IITs, IIFT among others.
Just came across an old article on Part-time MBA which you might want to go through: Got the part-time MBA blues?
Also, would like to add that i personally feel Part-time MBA's have a slight edge over the satellite based MBAs due to the personal interaction involved with the faculty and classes being conducted at the campus .
Hope these details help.

Hi I have done my Diploma (ADSS-Advance Diploma in Software Studies). So Institute issued us Certificate on Citation Ceremony. I have got Foundation training in Computer Application. So my query is which certificate name got more waitage for getting Job in IT Field.
My current company is providing telecom services but I'm not a part of it. I would like to shift my career into telecom consulting which is related to fullfilment, billing, assurance, provisioning etc.... Could anyone please help me out in providing any information by which I can gain knowledge in these areas?
Also is there any international certification for recognition purpose?
Btw I have 4 yrs exp in telecom (oss) R&D; (testing) and working in a major IT services company
Hi, I need some opinion on doing an MBA. I work in the software industry and have experience of 10 years. I work as part of software development teams and have worked as tech lead and currently am a project manager. I have worked for around 7 years in India and the rest in France, Dubai and UK. I feel that the growth of the Indian software industry has kind of saturated in the engineering or the delivery side and there are more options opening up in the business side like business development, sales etc. I am thinking of doing an MBA to help me in my career growth. I am staying in the UK and for personal reasons I would want to pursue an MBA here. I plan to go back to India after 2-3 years. After my MBA, will my experience of 10 years mainly in the software delivery side prove to be excessive baggage when I want to move to the business side in companies? Can I get roles with responsibility that is commensurate with my experience in the business side? Do let me know your thougts. Cheers, Sumanth

Hi Visha, The first step I would say is to select one vertical, as each of the areas fulfilment, assurance, billing are large areas. for eg: fulfillment.
Then you will have to start off with one subarea and one product suite. For eg: Cramer for inventory. Your company will similarly have selected a few products on which to build expertise. That will be a good reference for you as well. The selection of a product is needed as telco service providers look for expertise in a specific product and not so much on, say, general "service fulfilment" expertise.
After selecting the product, each of them have their own certifications. For eg: Cramer, HP Openview, IBM Micormuse etc etc. These certifications will help in building up your credibility and gaining knowledge.
It is common for people to spend few years working on each product. For eg in OSS, there are people who have made careers working on just fault management :-o. After you are an expert in one, you can move to other areas such as assurance or any other product within the same vertical.
Just a note of caution, the initial years will involve routine work such as installing, configuring, doing some customization etc which lot of ppl hate
i hve juz completed my b.tech in biotechnology.....i want to pursue mba ....but i screwed up cat 07 verbal...im good at quant and di ..im gonna work for t.c.s this year....will that stand against my chances of getting into iims? im sure that during my interview they will ask me why i opted a career in IT? the fact is no biotech company visited our campus during placement.... how should i manage such a situation?
@Crack the Cat
What I'll be saying now is something most of the CAT Veterans will tell you. "Don't worry about the interview from now itself, after clearing the written exams, you'll have ample time to get answers for this question from a lotta people on PG itself" and just so that you don't keep it in your mind, remember this: A lot of the engineers who make it to the IIMs are from IT background (without an engg in CS or IT) and if they can do it, so can you
i have just finished engg from Mumbai University (EXTC) with first class.
I am placed with L&T; infotec. but the joining is not till March '09. (i not interested in a career in IT and interested in finance)
i'm preparing for CAT '08....but after giving my SIMCAT's and seeing my poor performance in it i have become disheartened...i am pretty sure IIM's will have to wait for me...:frown:
now i feel that i have come to the end of the road...
i really don't know what to do?
should i prepare of CAT'09...what do i do till then...?? does teaching at a school/college/coaching class consider as job exp? what abt doing ur own bussiness, will that be considered as work ex.??
how do u get a 99.99999999 percentie? or just get up one day with no preparation and get 99.xxxx percentile in an exam (as i have read in many threads/posts)...are these people born smart...do i even have a chance against these people (or u)?
