Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

I am a 2008 engg graduate ...still waiting for company joining ... Have done a few short term technical courses and have some ( though negligible ) work exp.... not working newhere anymore...And also prepared for CAT (dissapointed here too coz dint cunt reach my peak due to very heavy work load ... cunt even glance at the CAT syllabus ). Now what I am apprehensive about is that it is already 2yrs since ... i have graduated but no signs of a job or a career as yet ...I had good enuff technical skills bt now that its been a long time .... all I can assure is I am not as good anymore. then again there are jobs but a mismatch to my profile , which some of us would back out from sooner or later.... or if u do ur skills get degraded. 😞 ... 😁 (Hope a work experienced guy would understand this)

1.) I have even envisaged of changing my field by doing courses like CFA
... but when I look at the cost it hurts a bit...coz already i spent on other courses but all in vain .... also u have to pay the CFA Test fee again if u fail .... that hurts even more...
Have heard u do get placed after doing a CFA? Would it help me fetch a finance reltd. job ?Or should I do the CFA course later .......... and look out for other avenues ? Whats the right time to start the course.?

2.)What are other fields apart from Technical n sales where I can try for jobs ... or that is it ...

3.)
Now the concern that comes to my mind is to go for job or go for field change and continue with CAT prep or do neither or none of them .

Sorry for the long story and list of questions...
but I really want to find a way out now, So Puys Suggestions and guidance Please!

PS: Surely Want to go for an MBA sometime , but currently things are hazy!

Regards and Thanks in Advance,
M_tilly

try giving some interviews..if u make it well and good....
give some probationary officer exams (since the stuff asked in these exams is similar to that in MBA exams) and get into some bank...once u get in continue giving MBA exams...
there might be other exams as well for various fields (i have no clue of it)...u can enquire...

If you think the profile is too good to turn down, by all means join E&Y.; However, if you believe that after doing your MBA, you can get a better offer than this, then just go ahead with SP Jain.

It would help if you could talk to some students of the institute and gather some data about the type of companies that recruit, the profiles that they offer etc.

As far as I've heard, the Infy training is pretty rigorous, and you won't be getting much time to devote to CAT studies. So based on your post, I would suggest you to join TCS. But then, probably people who've worked in TCS can tell whether you really get time to prepare or not. Just discuss with a few others before deciding.

As it is well known infy has a rigorous training prog,so you will get very lil or no time to study(during trainin) if u join infy.so its a bad choice if u want to join mba in 2011.hwever 2 year work-ex in infy will luk very attractive if u plan 2 join in 2012.

dont mistake TCS for a cake walk, its trainin prog is not so rigorous but aftr tht there is a gud amount of work-pressure.my sister is in TCS frm last 3 years and still she has to go office 6 days/week.

hope ds may help u a bit

Hi puys. This is my first post at PG.Here is another IIM(read.. Indian IT male) confused about future course of action................................................... ............................Well.All my engineering days were spent with the feeling...A placement in a big IT company is all one needs in life...(which obviously in due course of time would convert into onsite opportunities and double digit pay scales..A feeling built deep into the minds of my parents because thats what many comparables in my family circle were doing.) and It started of in 2007-08(in my final year of B.tech) that I decide that my interest(read...passion) lies in management kind of jobs(marketing.kind-of-stuff) and not the core technical jobs.............................................................................................................................I passed out in 2008, accepted the offer from TCS(though not with 100% satisfaction) and decided to give CAT in Nov,2008.but couldn't as I was in the peak of training at the company. Well..I joined classes at TIME immediately in Jan,2009 and was prompt till 4 months. But all ended when a multitude of factors zeroed in on me..(I was put into weekend shifts, me working part time at a start-up company and thinking about GMAT owing to work ex..)..Also couldn't give CAT,2009. And now that I have already completed 1.5 years after passing out, and realizing that 'IIMs(Indian IT males)' without any extraordinary achievements and extracurriculars are hardly accepted in any of the Top US business schools ,decided to give my heart and soul to CAT,2010 and start prep by March,2010.......................................................................................................................And then one fine morning, my PL turns up and says.."We are not satisfied with your performance. You will be put into a 3 month PIP(performance improvement plan) during which you will have to complete a set of goals assigned to you.(which means I will have to work day in and out and I hardly get any time for prep)..It will be may by the time I complete the PIP and 5 months of prep I think is not enough to get into a good B school. I sketched some 2 to 3 plans but confused what to do ........................................................................................................................................(1).Continue working on PIP for 3 months (day in and out) and when the PIP gets over, devote 3 hours daily to prep and try my luck in CAT,2010.(which obviously would increase the chances of delaying admission by another year.. (2).Quit the job, devote full time to CAT and get into a good B school without any further delay.(because Iam a 2008 passout and joining in 2011 would be like 3 years work ex) (P.SAnything in the top 30 colleges is okay for me) Guys ..please guide me............................................................................................................................... I would also like you guys to answer some more queries for me..In any case, I DON'T want to get into IT jobs after my MBA...So...would it be too late if I get into MBA after 3-4 years of IT experience..??

Hi friends,

I have had this question for a while but never came across an appropriate site to ask it.
Pagal guy seems just the right place to be if you preparing for MBA.
Congratulations for having such a wonderfully informative site.

My profile:

Work Experience:
- Working as a software developer at a leading internet shopping company in San Francisco US for over 2 years.
- Worked at a major Telecom company in US for 1 year as Business Intelligence developer.

Education
- MS in computer science, University of Louisiana, USA( 3.3 GPA on scale 4)
- BCA, HBN Garhwal University (overall 59%)

My question:

I have developed excellent soft skills and motivation towards my career while staying in US for over 6 yrs now.
I want to pursue MBA from India and IIM A/B are on my list.

But unfortunately I did not have great academics in X (75%) and XII (55%) standards.
I know IIMA filters students by X and XII academics ( should be more than 70%).
Can my work experience compensate for my class XII shortcoming?

I am a highly motivated candidate for MBA.
I am currently living in US and am also open for applying as Oversees candidate.

It will be a huge help if someone can help me in analyzing my chances.

thanks,
Rajesh

Hello PG fellows,

Like u all I am also one of the confused fellows. But I am confused between my job and 2 colleges which I have converted this year and their last date for depositing first installment is nearing.Right now working in Infosys and have offer from wipro @ 3.7 lacs per annum. Well I am a B.Sc Grad so package is pretty gud.

I gave SNAP last year and managed calls from symbi colleges and have finally converted SCIT and SITM.Both colleges are gud for me as I am in IT and in telecom domain as well. But my dilemma is average placement stats for these colleges is around 5 to 6 lacs which I can manage after 2 years without sacrificing my job, money taken for loan and time which I would devote for studies.

(1) Is it right to go for MBA leaving my job?

(2) Am I taking right decision for my future coz lot is at stake?

(3) Will MBA gimme better profile?

(4) If I land up with a CTC of 5 ot 6 lacs will it be good for me?

(5) If MBA I am confused between these 2 colleges?

Plz guys help me out. It's very urgent for my upcoming future.....

1. Depends on whether you want to do an MBA only to get a higher package or you see it as a long term enhancement to your profile. If it's the former, then don't go for it now. If it's the other way round, and you find the colleges good enough, then I guess you should go for it.

2. I think the 1st question answers this too and you'll have to figure out which is more important to you right now: money or profile enhancement.

3. Again subjective. What is a better profile according to you? And in every institute, there'll be people placed in varied profiles. So if and when you get admission in a B-school, you would get to know about the different types of profiles and you can choose accordingly.

4. According to me, CTC doesn't always mean the amount you get in hand per year. So think in terms of the "in hand", or the fixed component.

Answer to this question is similar as well. If you get a profile which suits you, it won't really matter how much you get paid at the time you get placed. People who are interested in the work they do, are pretty sure of rising quickly, in terms of position as well as in terms of salary.

5. Comparison of colleges is not allowed on the public forum. You can use the PG rankings to see which is more preferred. Alternately, you can ask some PG seniors who may have some idea about both these colleges.

Got my reply..
Akaash

Hi, my name is Akaash Garg and I am very new on pagal guy so excuse me moderators for any mistakes in this posting.

I just needed some advices so I came up to this section. When I was completing my graduation (B. Tech.) my final year project distracted me from my academic studies so much that I am a drop out now. After drop out I started my own business in same area and did not achieve much but still quite satisfactory as a beginner . I had given 2009 cat and other main exams as during this period I felt that I need develop my managerial skills. My academics records are not very good, they are just average and more over I will be completing my degree this year to go for MBA. My cat result is also nowhere to shout and even apply for good b schools. This is kind of deadlock situation for me. Should I go on with normal routine and try for both MBA and job as well so on both cases I will be able to develop my management skills and also gain some experience. On both cases I am sure I wont get any good B school or any desired job. Or should I stick to what I was doing and take bricks on my head the way they come. I still want to study and develop my skills but joining any b school wont provide me the solution

Not making it too long please advice me... especially seniors as they have seen more and better than me.

Regards

What i believe the first thing you need to build in yourself is self-belief. I understand you are really worried about your acads and future prospects and that is quite natural.

Lets look at it this way you are completely screwed up and nothing good can happen to you.Your future is absolutely doomed.....SO suddenly you start thinking "isse kharab kuch ho hi nahi sakta, ab jo bhi hoga isse achcha hi hoga" be however small.

So now start looking for job however small the company is, however low salary you get- but make sure the work ex counts (i mean dont join a BPO). I am sure you will get a job which pays you 8000 in a period of 1 month. And get this job without the help of any relatives;on your own credit... as a result you would start respecting yourself and your confidence will also boost.

After working for 1-1.5 years switch your job to a better company-simultaneously start preparing for MBA. After a few days you would have 2 positive aspects...

1. If you score well in any b-school entrance exam- achance to study in a good college.
2. A work experience of 2.5 years.

Now even if you dont make it to a good b-school then you can carry on with your job and always appear the next year.

Thus dont waste any more time, get up and get going.........

You don't need to be too worried about being a fresher. Although the number of work-ex people is generally more as compared to the number of freshers, you surely won't be at a serious disadvantage.

Maybe some work-ex guys could relate the theories taught to practical life better, but believe me, you'll instead get to learn a lot more and perhaps, have a fresh perspective to the things taught, and not go there with any preconceived notions from your past work life.

Hello puys,

One of my friends is pursuing his graduation in computer engg and he aspires to do an MBA in india or abroad and he has a KT in the 7th semester....he wants to know whether this might hamper his chances of making it into any premier mgmt insti in India or Abroad????
