While joining a B-school, you need to be clear in all your subjects, i.e. there shouldn't be even one back at that point of time. I don't think any B-school would consider waiting for a person to clear his paper, but if you're facing such kind of issue, you can try asking them.

then i guess, its no use for attending any gdpi's.......

do you know any place where I can get some little-bit salary job with a fail in one subject.

I think you should attend, it'll give you valuable experience. Besides, you get a chance to be upfront and directly ask them about your chances with a back paper. You surely can't lose much, at most they'll say "We can't select you". Even then you know you can try next year in a better way. Just go ahead with the GD/PI rounds, would be tremendously helpful for the next year.

I don't exactly know where to get a job. Most companies would atleast ask for graduation, which in your case, is not yet complete. Try asking some friends if they can arrange something, or just clear the paper and work hard for CAT next year.

I am an MBA aspirant, and like many I haven't really scored 99.9 in ma CAT. Its jst an 82. Well, so what! I am not planning on compromising my career or dreams for this. There's always more than one way to the top. Here's something I have to ask the seniors, and others who know.

Internships give you a lot of experience. *But how important do you think is your Bschool Tag for getting an internship in an international company like Adidas, Rolls-Royce, Disney etc. * Once you enter into one of the top 30 colleges in the country...how far do you think this will be possible?

Thanks en avance to all those who reply!

Drivin around!

Even when you get into a top B-school, you're not assured of a dream summer/final placement. Yes, your chances surely increase, but do remember that even in the best of colleges, there'll always be few people who may have to be content with a "not-so-good" offer. Of course, this "good" and "not-so-good" itself is very subjective and depends on an individual.

i m a self experienced trader with not much knowledge abt finance and stocks...i m rite now in last year of my graduation and want to get placed in finance related sectors....so could you recomend me 2-3 ncfm exams that i shall clear in order to boast abt my financial wisdom....

i m having very limited time with me bfr my placements to begin and so i dont want to waste my time on ny worthless modules.....i m considering to appear for two modules "securities and derivatives"....will that b enough...
pls do reply!!

Hi,

I am being interviewed for Associate position for graduates in Ernst & Young for their Risk Advisory services in India. Though I have expressed my interest in Business Advisory Services (BAS) of Ernst & Young, they have called for an interview for Risk Advisory .

I browsed E & Y website to learn more about their Risk Advisory Services but could not get much out it due to their jargon like Internal Audit, Enterprise Risk & Compliance etc etc... the website fails to explain what exactly an Associate (entry level) would be doing in his daily job. Is it more of forming only reports and giving to seniors or does it involve forming up strategy and implementing it to achieve business goals of client's organization ??

My background is engineering, major in IT, recently graduated. I am more interested in solving business problems and gaining broad business education across various industry, rather than sticking only to IT/Technology consulting or software development.

  1. What would be a typical day when working as an associate in Risk Advisory services of Ernst & Young ??
  2. Does it involve client interaction or doing only back office work ??
  3. What are the exit options(industries) after gaining few years of experience in Risk Advisory ?? (post Risk advisory)
  4. Hows the work culture in Ernst & Young, Pune/Mumbai(Bombay) office ??
  5. I heard Risk Advisory is more of internal audit at clients side, what exactly does this mean ??Does this job requires traveling to client location (India/Abroad) ??
  6. What is the salary for graduates at entry level Analyst/Associate position in Risk/Business Advisory services at E&Y; ??

Your feedback and will be highly appreciated. Any additional information is welcomed.

Thanks & regards,
Starwalker.

One always learn from the experiences and this learning never go waste.
I wud say u can justify like this:- though my basic interest lies in IT (Before joing IT), i later on realised that though i enjoy my work in IT,i want to do more scaleup, and one field in particualr that attracts me is HR.

This is a great thread.

Will definitely help a huge amount of people like me who are in serious confusion.
I am currently in a complete state of uncertainty and its too overwhelming that I am unable to take a decision.Any inputs from seniors would be of real great help.

Well,here goes my story.

I gave CAT 2009.

Attempt:First attempt

Splitup:

Quantitative : 90.30 percentile :lookround:

DI/LR - 51.71 percentile(:banghead::banghead::banghead:)

Verbal - 98.98 percentile

Overall : 92.07 percentile

Preparation time : 4 months

Quality of preparation: Average,

Reason:Real heavy work load at office.

Academics :
10th - 97 percentage(state rank)
12th - 97 percentage
B.E - 82 percentage(Top 25 in Anna university)

Extra/Co-curricular: ISA association president in college.
Writing short stories/producing creative works for office literary forum.
Nothing great to flaunt honestly.

Passion/Long term goals: Teaching ,Making 'education' merriment.

Category : OBC (non creamy layer)

Experience : 3 years 9 months

Designation : Software Engineer.

Company: Second largest IT company in India :)

Following are the important points you would like to know before throwing some gyaan :

As is the case with 90 plus percentage of Software Engineer population of our country,I am not very happy with my current job profile.I'd like to at-least move to a better profile if not a different/better field. And after lot of sleepless nights' research I have found out that the only realistic option to achieve this is a full-time MBA.Any other route just doesn't seem to workout in this field, not for my case at least. Also with very good communication skills and able team handling qualities MBA would definitely do me a world of good and would fetch me my desired job, is what my peers and Managers feel.I want to believe them.

Well, unfortunately CAT was a flop, the score wasn't what I expected when I started the preparation.Fortunately,92.07 still gives me some hope for the second tier bschools(typical 30 plus ranked Bschools in pagalguy rankings).Of these I have applied only to BIM trichy and seriously considering if I should apply for Welingkar.

My question is,Is it a good option to leave a famous MNC after four years of solid work experience and settle for a second-tier bschool(With all due respect to second-tier bschools)?or Is it better to forget the whole MBA episode, stop loss and continue in the IT field learning further in my technology and move on than ,settling for relatively inferior bschools(relative to the bluest of the blueblooded institutes.),considering the fact that money IS important for a middle class guy like me.I would be losing two years of salary and a huge fees for these two years. If there's no ROI,whats the point anyway?

Some of my friends suggest that I should wait for 1 more year and try CAT (& other Indian entrance exams)again to enter IIMs(OBC and very good acads is an added advantage they claim) or other top notch colleges considering that my workex is of almost 4 years(which will be 5 years next year) and second tier Bschools will find it difficult to place me.They say its not a sensible decision to settle for a less than top 20 bschool for this experience. But considering the amount of work pressure that keeps mounting with each passing year in IT Iam really doubtful if I can make that killer preparation for 2010/2011 exams.Even if I do against all odds isnt the whole thing a complete gambling?I mean option of a second-tier b school would completely get destroyed next year and If next time also if the score isnt that great, probably I might never do an MBA in my life.Should continue with this job I hate, forever in my life.(:banghead:)

Some of them suggest me to take GMAT before august.I am that typical middle class guy with financial constraints.I will not be able to shell out huge chunks of money for these foreign univesities. Are there colleges out there providing scholarships for students with good GMAT score? How sensible is a foreign MBA dream for someone like with me with an average profile overall ,even assuming that I manage to secure a very good score in GMAT.I heard a foreign MBA,especially in US may not be worthy for an Indian IT guy, if the college doesn't come in top 15 ranks and even in the case of top 15 colleges selecting a guy, they dont easily provide scholarships to IT profile guys, making it a catch-22 situation. So,is it of any use writing GMAT?

This is like caught between devil and deep sea,a job that I hate and a desire to do an MBA that looks like out of reach.

Now,Thanks a lot for reading this patiently.
Forgive the naivety in the post, for Iam at the peak of confusion and have no time to really weed out the silliness in the post.
Kindly help me by providing your inputs if you can.
This is a critical juncture in my life and any useful input would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Balakumarann,

First of all I would appreciate the efforts that you have taken to put down your thoughts and story in such a great manner... I am sure this the story of a lot of guys out, waiting for answer. Your work experience and academics are truly worth praising.

I am not a guy who can give you an advice, because I am a fresher myself, but I believe that though you did not succeed this year, you will be able to do it next year. Also as you have mentioned non creamy layer, you are bound to get an advantage in the admission process of IIM or some other tier institute in India. Your work experience in world's 2nd best company is worth, you will definitely get an admit in tier 1 institute.

I wish you all the best for your future.

Regards,
Starwalker.

With such a Good profile ,Never even think of settling for anything less than top 10 colleges. You have said it so clearly that your preparation was a Average,so this time you give your 100%. You already have a good job and your work experience will increase too. So in my point of view give it one more shot! I might not be the best person to give you the advise but i thought i should post this. Do not think a lot just go with what your heart says:cheerio:

Hello everyone,

I am a B.Pharma graduate and working for a small pharma company in marketing department.

I gave CAt 09 but was not able to crack it. Now m gearred up again for CAT 2010.

I am working for a very small organisation, I have a chance to go to some MNC as Marketing executive.. My question is, do B-schools give more weight age if I am working in an MNC? The work in both the companies will be same.

If they are giving more weightage to MNC work ex thn I will change my job and take a job wid MNC. (I am asking this coz the nature of work will be same the only thing which will change is the time duration will be more and the package will be better but I will get less time to prepare for CAT)

Please answer this.

go 4 the MNC, not just for CAT but also for ur personal development and opportunities in future.....the weightage given to both will be same.....but an MNC will have better impact when u will go for the interviews.....further during placements too it helps quite a lot if u have worked for some good companies.

i have 1 serious question:m standing at a point where i have to make a choice:

completed my BE in 2009. was not good in engineering and recession couldnt find any job. always wanted to do MBA. so prepared for CAT. scored 90.56%ile in this years cat. (m really good at maths . if god tells me that u r not good in maths i will believe him.) have calls LBSIM,NIRMA, IMT-N, NIBM, TAPMI,IMI-HR.

done with my lbs and nirma interview.both were stopped at why such a low score in acads.(89% in 10 th std and 59% in BE).now i can never be able to cahnge it.

i think i would be able to convert atlest one call.
so should i take it or wait for one more year for cat?
-why are mba institutions giving so much importance to what u were in past rather than what you are now?
they are interested in how much competition u have participated and won instead of how much is your problem solving skill right now?

(i felt this after giving two interviews.this is my personal views)
