Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

hello puys.....
my dilemma is...if i got good %ile in 2010..will ma acads affect ma calls from IIMs..
my profile..
X-78%
XII-73.33%
BE-persuing..m in 3rd year n i know till the end of ma engg i will manage to get a degree of 70+ % in my BE(Computer science engg)....
if i worked hard wid my heart n soul, would i be succede to grab a call from IIMs after scoring good in CAT 2010 becoz of this acads..?
plz help me...thanx in adv..

The point is, if you knew that your acads would create a problem, would you stop working for a better %ile?? If you really want to do an MBA from IIMs or other top institutes, these thoughts about profile, scores etc. should come once you've done the tough part, i.e. score atleast 95+ %ile, and I repeat, this is the least you should aim for.

I've seen many queries, like "Would my profile create a problem if I score 99+ %ile in next year's CAT?". My answer to them is, "First get 99+ %ile, then think about it". They don't realize that talking about 99 %ile and getting 99 %ile are two very different things.

The problem with lot of people is that they get fixated on the wrong things. Agreed, many IIMs and other top B-schools are focussing more on acads, work-ex etc., but are these things in your control?? No. So why bother about it. Just worry only about what you can change, what you can better, and that's your %ile.

Besides, if you do get a good %ile and get called for an IIM interview, you'll get plenty of time to explain your average acad scores. Just that you have to be able to convince them and try to impress upon them that your present (your CAT %ile) is your strength, the actual you. How to do it?? Well, this answer can only be devised by your own self, and no "sample answers" would be able to help.

Hi....

the hardest question : CAT or GATE?

i am pursuing b.tech from GGSIPU,delhi:banghead:

well i have been deadlocked into this eternal question answering which has become my nemesis.

well i was thinking of doing CAT but my friend told me CAT is very tough and i have no chance and gate is much easier .... is he right..... is CAT super tough and GATE a small baby in front of it ???

how do i judge my skills to decide on this --- people always say that choose that one in which you have interest but does a small repulsion from technical education due to years of it's study big enough a deciding factor ????

i do not know the reason and it is completely illogical but whenever i ask myself i get one answer from my gut : CAT

some say that even if i do M.tech i will have to pursue MBA to have a secure career---- is it correct???

please help me out ... i am very much tensed and frightened for future .....

Firstly People will give you thousands of advises, just make sure you do not become football of other opinions.( That includes my advise as well)

Both exams CAT and GATE are "super tough" as said by your friend only if you do not prepare for them! Gate is not a child's play either,I have seen my friends miss the cut off by few points of marks!! With right kind of preparation you can get through both the exams.

Now coming to your question of what to do, Well it is only you who can decide on that. Like you said all people say to do what interests you!! Even i will say that, but be sure what interests you! If CAT then does MBA fill in your interests and if GATE then does Mtech fill in your interests!
Doing a MBA is not only to get a secured job,it is more than that. Believe me!

Do not confuse yourself a lot! Look on all parameters involved and then take a decision. Now enough of gyaan!
All the best:cheerio:

hope in your 2009 mba season you wd hv taken almost all mba exams..that wd hv definitely given u an idea as to which exam is like what and in what all exams u hv a chance of making it...

my advice get a job and simultaneously prepare for MBA exams..it might be arduous task but many ppl do it...it mite so happen that despite ur efforts 2010 mba exams may not go well but u will hav job security and u can prepare for next year

if u go by option 1 and u still dont make it to a decent bschool, u wd be in a damn difficult situation..

take cat 2010 and 2011..nothing to be afraid even if u get less %tiles.but at the same time i would recommend taking other mba exams like cat, jmet, xat, fms, cet etc.
L&T; is good that wd help u in interviews but first u need to clear the aptitude tests...
dont quit ur job..u mite not make it to decent bschools even after quitting...and u wd hv to settle for sm not-so-decent bschool..
A very warm wish to all the geeks in this thread.....
Myself Vishnu Vasan...I finished my engineering in 2008 and currently working for an Ashok Leyland sister concern in chennai for about a month or so...But i was seriously preparing for the CAT in the previous years and i was unable to crack it.....So i was simply sitting back home for 2 years and preparing.....But now i am again wishin to give CAT...Will this two year gap count much??Even if i clear CAT,will i be able to get in to IIMs???????.Somebody please help me in this thread folks.I would be thankful to you thro my entire lifetime if u sort this out for myself........
Regards
Vishnu

keep taking CAT and other exams and if u clear it would be great...u will be asked about the gap but then u need to face it rather than fear it..
on a serious note..keep building ur workex and give serious focus on workex also...

Join somewhere..most probably after MBA ur field is goin to change where ur going to start fresh...
being in job is def helpful in interviews rather than being idle..from mba interview point of view..

You've posted the same thing in three different threads, which is not allowed as per PG rules. Just stick to the PO aspirants thread, where you've posted already.

thank you very much

HI,i just want to know whether its worth joining TAPMI's new programme in hospital management or is it risky?

Hi People,

I am a B.Tech graduate in IT. I am working in a software services MNC that deals with BFSI sector for about 2.5 years. I want to get into marketing arena like strategic planning, market analysis and brand management etc., and mainly in lines with FMCG companies like Hindustan lever, P&G;, Pepsi co. For such a major switch over the best option available is an MBA of course, but i could not pursue it for atleast 2 years due to some reasons. And i don want to waste that time either with BFSI IT services since i wanna establish myself in FMCG & marketing.
I am thinking of learning the marketing/sales basics from an institute that can offer weekend/online/part time courses (mainly because i dont want to lose track of my existing career till i am in a position to have a ok kinda grip in the path i aim for). Its better that the institute/organisation is recognised widely.

I need some advice from you guys on this. Can i try to get into some decent (decent in terms of profile , propects) sales/marketing jobs after such certificate course. Please post your suggestions on this if you have a idea .

Thanks
Suthersan

Hey guys,

I am a third year student at Shri Ram College of Commerce and had appeared for various management entrance tests. here's how i fared:

IIFT: scored 46.87 - Converted
FMS: expected 380 - Interview on 31/3
XAT: 99.95 percentile - Concerted both BM and PMIR
CAT: 95.89 percentile

Now heres the story. My score in CAT was brought down by english (82 percentile), which incidentally is my strongest section. As far as my Mock performance is concerned, i used to a consistent performer.

Now, i am confused whether to join Xlri this year, or give CAT another shot next year. As i have posted, my mock scores suggest that my performance in CAT 2009 was the exception, rather than the rule.

In the meantime, i have an offer from Bain capability centre, Gurgaon. Its a back end consulting Job, pays well for a undergrad (ctc=7 lacs).

I know, u might be taking me for crazy/arrogant for even thinking abt leaving XLri, but there are two things:

1) I have been a consistent performer (99+)with mocks, and hence that lends me a little confidence. However, as we all know, theres a lot more to cracking CAT than just prep or past performance.

2) Secondly, i have a good job offer, and i could as well work for a year or two and then do my MBA.

And finally, i 'think' i am interested in finance. well, i dunno for sure, but as an undergrad, i think this is something that would interest me the most. and from what i have gathered from seniors, the best companies in finance do not come to xlri (they do at a/b/c).

So the basic decision is whether to take xlri this year or wrk with bain and give CAT next year.
Guys, please give me ur views.

Thanks in advance.

Hi
This is Dev. This is going to be my first shot at CAT....
I have read a lot about acads being a very integral part of applying to proper colleges.....though I couldn find a thread dedicated to it so I am posting it here...

My acads are:

10th:- 82%
12th:- 78.4%
B.E :- 61.5%
Work ex:- 1 year 7 months ( TCS)

On a break since 10 months due to personal reasons....

I would like to know if I am going to be unable to apply to major colleges...
Pls do reply...
In case there is a different thread for it, pls let me know link...

Thanks a ton !!!!
