Hello and welcome to PG, hope you will enjoy your time here.

First of all, let me tell you that there are Thousands of students who are facing the same situation as you. Ie People without jobs, and without calls.

However, there is no need to be alarmed. You need to take this in a positive way.

First of all, I believe you should FIRMLY DECIDE- as to what you REALLY want to do in life. Which career path do you want to follow? If the confusion persists, you need to do a self analysis and come up with a fixed answer.

First you said that you were interested in Biotech. Then you said that your heart was never into R & D. Finally you opted for a Software company simply because you did not have any other option for on-campus placement.

Again, you say that your mind is in a conflict- whether to opt for R & D or Management.

You say yourself that you are not interested in ICICI, but you want to pursue HR. If that is indeed true, I would advise against joining ICICI. :)

What I get to know from all this, is that you are confused. You have conflicting interests and are unable to decide a fixed career path.

See, Management is definitely important but its not suitable for all. You should check out if you want to work in the corporate world. Talk with your seniors and HR managers to know hands-on what their work is like, and whether you can adjust yourself to it. :cheerio:

But if you are genuinely interested in Research, go for it. Remember that you can pursue an MBA even later in your life. But once you enter the corporate world, it will be quite difficult to back out and enter the R & D line. :banghead:

After saying this, I must add that India lags far behind most other developed countries when it comes to R & D. This is the reason why many of the talented scientists prefer to work abroad. However this should not be a deterrent for you.

Finally, I would say- Synchronize your Heart with your Brain and follow your passion. Remember that if you do something which you never wanted to do, you will inadvertently end up disliking it. You will face lots of hurdles or impediments in your path, definitely. But if not for them, we would have never managed to reach new heights..

All the best..

Hey everyone,
I have an age old query which I am confused about.

I am about to finish my computer engineering from one of the best engineering colleges in Mumbai. I have multiple placement offers from top Indian IT firms. I have selected an IT MNC firm. I am planning to pursue my MBA after 2-3 years as I don't think I am prepared for it now. I basically want to work for sometime.
Now I am confused as to what kind of work should I take up. Should I work in a Big IT firm or a small financial firm (I have offer from one). If I am going to pursue my MBA later (finance) which experience will be valuable and add to my resume or knowledge.
Do the IIMs give importance to Brand name of the company or to the related work done?

My college will end in the middle of June and I can immediately join the small financial firm whereas the date of joining from the IT firm will be somewhere around September. (I am preparing for CAT too)
Please help!!

If you're sure of doing an MBA in Finance, I would suggest that you go for the financial firm. But yes, do check whether you have the inclination for that job now or not. If you're more inclined towards the IT job, there's no harm in waiting for the job while you simultaneously prepare for CAT.

Brand name of a company matters to some extent but much more important is the type of work you do. If you work in a very big organization but do "common" work, you would lose out to someone who works in a small organization but does some "important" work. Common and Important are subjective words and it'll be decided by the panelists which category you fall in, based on the answers you give to their questions. So I would suggest not to give too much importance to brand name.

PS: Don't post the same query in multiple threads. Post in only one, and if it's not answered for some days, only then post in some other thread.

Since both are the service companies, so it will depend upon the type of profile you will get after joining them. Moreover the hiring manager would not be able to tell you exactly what type of projet you would be doing. Sapient is more into Java platform and TCS might work on variety of platforms including Java. so, it completely boils down to your location preference and the package offered to you in both the companies.

If you are interested in going for MBA in finance , you should join the financial firm to get the relevent experience which will help you in career after the MBA. But then again talking about brands, they do help you but only if your work in those companies is also relevant. If you are sure of the brand value of the IT company and the profile you would be getting there, then you might consider it as well.
Finally it comes to choice between what you want to do in future and if you would be comfortable working in financial company. And one more thing, since you are an IT guy, you would be working on IT projects only in financial company also and hence the type of experience you are looking for might not be available there. So my advice is to go for brand in this case.

Hi all,

I am working with MNC (Like IBM, Adobe, Accenture .... ) for 30 months,

I am planning to go for MBA from next session starting in 2011.

I am working in IT Industry but a bit confused about doing MBA, about specialization and the job scenario after doing MBA because I am already 27 now and by the time I will completing MBA, I will be near 30 yrs of age.

Help me for the best option.

I want to grow professionally but at this stage I am unable to see any growth till next 2 yrs ... its too slow here to grow ... "High Input low Output"

Please help

Hey,
Actually the financial firm I am talking about is a small one and they have not hired me for IT work. The owner of the firm knows me well and she has given me assurance that the work which I will be doing will be good and core finance. Since this is a very tempting offer that very few would get, I am unsure about the IT MNC.
Another thing I am worried about is during the B school interview how will I justify this work, as in a computer engineer as a fresher is expected to work in an IT company and not a finance firm. So will this decision backfire or work to an advantage.

:( 😞

Sorry man for posting it in multiple threads!

In case you are getting a profile in finance, I think it is OK for you to join it. And about the interviews, it entirely depends upon you - how you put your case in front of the panel if they ask you this question about switching careers. You can tell them about how finance interests you and so on ...but then again for every argument you put there will be a counter argument and it is you only who will have to convince the panel about this since it will be your choice. Moreover, I personally feel it is not such a big issue for you to worry about right now. You got to do what you got to do. People make strange choices in their career all the time and probably they make those choices for the best. SO I would advise you to think clearly about what you want to do lets say five years from now and how the current decision might help you in that.

If age is a factor for you, I would suggest you to go for a 1 year MBA. You can try ISB and Great Lakes for 1 year MBA. And if your work ex is 5+, you can also go for executive MBA from IIMs. You need to be clear in your mind about the specialisation you want to do in MBA because you won't get another chance to change careers. And as far as ROI is concerned , if you get a good institute and do good in academics there, I think you will end up with a pretty decent job.

@abhishek_techi-
I know! What I will do is, try to work in the financial firm for sometime till I get my MNC joining date. If I will be enjoying the work, I will continue or else switch. CAT preparation will be going on simultaneously. This sounds to be the most logical choice right now. Thanks a lot for helping me out!

Cheers!

Hi Puys,

I am planning to prepare for both CAT and GMAT next year. I just wanted to know your suggestions how I should approach the next few months? When should I ideally give my GMAT? Do I have enough time to prepare for essays and interview for B schools ( GMAT ) for next season. And yeah , how much of an overlap of preparation will be there for both CAT & GMAT?

I have already given CAT twice . I have a fair idea of what it is? But about GMAT no idea...

Let me elaborate you further.. My CAT preparation for next year would consist of taking TIME-AIMCATs and analyzing them extensively , practicing some quant and Logic problems from TIME Material and doing intensive reading on diverse topics. But I have no clue about how to approach for GMAT while preparing for CAT simeltonously.

Here is my profile

Xth: 89%
XIIth: 83%
B.Tech: 7.8 CGPA
Work ex: 27 months in IT

Thanks,
Satya

Puys,

Anyone willing to give me his/her advice on the above?

Now my problem is i got 57% in 12. I had taken 6 subject
so taking PCM + eng +sanskrit = 57%
but in my school notice board it was written 61% as they had taken best 5 subject.(excluding MATHs 41 number only)
now frds i just want to know can i write now MY 12 percent as 61. as most of the companies prefer Above 60% in each field . frds plz suggest me. thax in advance.

You can mention 61% unless a company specifically states that you need to take into account all the subjects.
