Choose the job which you're more interested in. Try and get the job description of both the jobs and decide accordingly. If you're more interested in a job, you're more likely to perform better and thus, more likely to answer satisfactorily to questions related to your work-experience. If you choose IT, there could be a question on why you moved away from your core stream, which you would have to answer. This wouldn't be an issue if you take up the other job.

But I would say again, take up the job which interests you more, rather than thinking about other things now.

There's nothing like "this work-ex would hold more value". Had this been the case, many people would have tried for that type of a job, right?? Value is always defined by the type of work-experience you had, be it in any firm, in any role. Normally, you would find many people with IT work-ex, but does it make it less valuable?? Some would say yes, but I would say it depends. Depends on how much you have got from your experience and how well you can portray it in front of the panelists. Because there are more competitors in the field of IT, you need to show some quality or learning that's better than most of the others, which can be a bit tough.

Same is the case with core jobs. People with such experience are pretty rare nowadays but that doesn't mean you'll get marks only because you have worked in such a company. You'll still have to prove that you've learned enough, else someone else will take the cake.

That's why I'm saying, there's no definitive answer to this question. Whichever job you choose, work hard and take the most you can from it, and it'll automatically be valuable.

Value of work experience depends on the position ur applying for..technical experience wouldn't hold much value for fin jobs, but would be very very valuable for techie jobs..

You can go in for a professional course for sure as it would be of great help going forward by increasing your chances of hitting in for good job profiles in your desired area of interest.
But if you think you can manage to work at the same time in some other field than y not, multitasking is one skill that can always help you to score brownie points where ever you go.

Even if you do not multitask and go in for CFA alone even that will help as you would gain knowledge and exp. in form of intern-ship that is an inherent part of these professional courses.

Hope this helps

Best of luck

after a stint in US..maybe u can do MBA from US itself.. 😃

i am an ABAP consultant with about 1.9 yrs of EXP from TCS. i am trying to decide whether i should think about further studies (MBA) or not. if i go for it, i will be joining about about 2.5+ yrs of SAP ex, the perience.

is it sane to leave the SAP domain and go for MBA? There are cases of many ABAP consultants getting converted to functional consultants and there are onsite opportunities as well. SAP is definitely a great field.

I am really in a dilemma whether to give CAT a shot or not. Any advises?

BTW my package can rise upto 4.2-4.5 by the time i get into some good B-school, if i do. Just for info.

and yea the only reason i even started to think about MBA is to get faster growth, in terms of salary mainly.

pls give some advise, good bad anything. all responses are welcome and appreciated.

Kind regards,
A

i am working in a software firm
i want to do mba in finanace..

i am an electronics engg..

Hi A,

As u have rightly SAP is the indemand thing, and as u r currently working oin the same it' great, what I would suggest you is that you should go in for an MBA as it would not only enhance your skill set but at the same time will give you a great opportunity to grow at a much faster rate(at least initially) and if you are performer you will grow Big.

Hi,

Let me tell you about myself first..this will be my 5th attempt for CAT.I should feel ashame telling this..but i cant lie to myself...i do hold an experience of 3 yrs in a french Bank as a technical analyst...

I completed my engg in 2006 and parallely i prepared for CAT 2006...the results were shocking ..and happily IIM said that "forget not only about us but also top-20 colleges ..you just got less %ile."..least hopeful and disheartenedly i came to Bangalore and searched for the job...got it in a french bank...its been 3 yrs working here as designation=analyst...nice company..and in 3 yrs i got to know that...a) i dont want to proceed in technical field,,,b) I am not able to devote time to preparation because of the hectic workload and schedule through out the year..

So finally i quit the job..yes, you read it correctly..i quit the job...and will go home for this year CAT preparation...now its really do or die for me...i am in notice period till june...I heard that mocks are gonna be start soon from may 23...and i have to brush up my basic skill once again to appear for Mocks....but things are same at my office...i am unable to devote even 1 hr there...i am afraid about my mock scores...if they will be bad then it will decrease my confidence...and i dont want this....:-(...also it will take 1-1.5 months to brush up basics...

can you suggest me how to prepare for maths and DI(as i am poor in both) in office working hours...because i cant take up the preparation material there and practice infront of my whole team..

Seniors and people who faced these type of situations before can suggest something as their suggestions matters a lot...

thanks in advance..

my roomie in MBA worked on SAP-ABAP for 2.6 years in Accenture..he was earning 5+ and was on the road to go onsite to US and after doing MBA he was frustrated...
if you get into a decent college..like colleges which have cutoffs of above 95-96 percentile in CAT..then I think you would get the salary and job that makes leaving ur job worth while..

Usually a lot of IT guys leave their jobs to do MBA because they get fed up of working on technology etc. If that is also the case with you, then I would suggest that you should also prepare for MBA otherwise wait until and unless you get the opportunity to study in a top 10 MBA college...

and yeah a lot of IT guys become functional consultants...

and yeah after MBA you can enter into many varied fields...
for ex: you can go from Sales in IT to sales in Banks etc...
i am working in a software firm
i want to do mba in finanace..
not interested in IT
i am an electronics engg..
can anyone suggest jobs in finance or anything other than IT?

Mate, take out time and do some introspection. As per the info provided by you - Graduate with Electronics Specialization, then work ex in core IT, and now planning about MBA in Finance.

Top institutes would definately ask you "why finance?", and you cannot say "not interested in IT".

Revert in case of any queries - Happy to Help! 😃

HI Hi-Man :D

dear you do not need to be disheartened, it's just that you need to put in some serious efort this year around, the first thing I would suggest to you is to enroll for classes to prepare for CAT ASAP, it will not only help you in getting you brushed up with all the requsite subjects but at the same time will help you to get in touch with like minded people, willing to do MBA.

Coachings also help you in orienting mind in the right direction, now you will say I can't devote time along with job, hmmm.... I will just say one thing that if you are SERIOUS and I mean it, then u will surely find time for classes, I will not ask you to give a lot of time apart from ur classes but these initial classes will help you to rub off some rust that might have accumulated over a period of time.

In case you will be shifting from your current location after your notice period is over then opt for an institute which have branches in both the cities, as nearly all institutes allow you transfer from one centre to another in specific cases.

Hope this Helps........

Enjoy Studies and best of luck................

dude y should u be ashamed of urself??? ur not the first 1 to take CAT five times yaar....
as suggested by fellow pgites do join a coaching class and start preparing...i m sure ur most probably not working on sundays...which is sufficient enuff to prepare...
even if u get less marks in mocks how does it matter..it happens with many ppl...many ppl score less in initial mocks, learn from mistakes and peak at the time of CAT...
most important of all....take OTHER exams as well...like CET, IIFT, XAT, FMS, NMAT, SNAP, JMET etc. m sure u can strike well in 1 of these..

Moreover, try to choose exams based on ur strengths...for ex if ur stronger in reasoning than quants you might wanna focus on SNAP (if they are still giving double marks for reasoning exams)..
