i will be passing out as an electrical engineer this year...i would like to go for MBA after 2-3 years of work ex...i have 2 jobs in hand ...one as a software engineer in TCS and the other as project engineer in mcnally bharat engineering(core company)....which will give me more value at the time of interview in any B-school....plz advice whether i should go for IT in TCS or as a project engineer in mcnally bharat engineering with relation to value it will give to my work ex at any premier B-school....
If you have interest in your core department, nothing can be better than Mcnally Bharath. During your interview you will be able to present and justify your continuity in the stream of your graduation. It makes sense when you have studied in a core stream and working in a core company. Also as a specialization for your MBA you will have a great chance to get into operations stream. If your interest is more towards marketing then too you can back it up with your experience. But before all these you must well apt with your career aspirations and then take your decision...
Hi PUYS, Need your advice on following query/ies: I completed my BE in comps currently working in an IT firm over 2.7 years of W exp. Planning 2 do MBA next year. Q1) Will it really help shape my career to do an MBA in IT(as i have decided this is d field ) after say 3 odd years? as if i don't go for MBA i would be like having total W exp of more than 5 years and also may be on-site exp.
Q2) If i decide 2 go for MBA, i feel tht i need to take a break from my job as the work is reaally hectic currently...so what is d right time to leave the job considering that i don't have much idea about what 2 study as i need to start from scratch though i have appeared 4 CAT last year but not of much use?
Q3) which are the colleges i should target considering im an average student(suggest few colleges suiting an average stdnt and few ambitious ).

1. MBA in IT/Systems could add value to your profile. Depends on what kind of profiles you're looking at after completing your MBA. Since you would be considered as a lateral, you have a good chance of getting a better profile/package than most others.
2. That you need to decide according to your grasping ability. Some people can manage both work and study, whereas some decide to quit a few months earlier to devote entire time to preparations. Even I left my job a couple of months prior to CAT and managed pretty well by studying around 2-4 hrs per day on an average. Before that, I just relied more on experimenting with my mock exams.
So just go through the syllabus and try to figure out the time you would need to cover the basics. Then you can decide when you have to leave your job, whether you even have to leave or not.
3. Many students who get through the top colleges, including IIMs, are average students. To clear CAT, you don't need to be a rocket scientist, just need to have a good common sense, so that you can work out problems in your own way. So try to work out being "average" in your advantage. Forget about your acads etc., and focus only on CAT preparations. As many believe, it's certainly not difficult to ace it
4. Best way, be honest about it. It's no shame in saying that you prioritized. In fact, managers have to place a high emphasis on prioritization. Be honest and humble and it'll work in your favour. Try to bluff your way, and it's sure to backfire.
Let me tell you about myself first..this will be my 5th attempt for CAT.I should feel ashame telling this..but i cant lie to myself...i do hold an experience of 3 yrs in a french Bank as a technical analyst...
I completed my engg in 2006 and parallely i prepared for CAT 2006...the results were shocking ..and happily IIM said that "forget not only about us but also top-20 colleges ..you just got less %ile."..least hopeful and disheartenedly i came to Bangalore and searched for the job...got it in a french bank...its been 3 yrs working here as designation=analyst...nice company..and in 3 yrs i got to know that...a) i dont want to proceed in technical field,,,b) I am not able to devote time to preparation because of the hectic workload and schedule through out the year..
So finally i quit the job..yes, you read it correctly..i quit the job...and will go home for this year CAT preparation...now its really do or die for me...i am in notice period till june...I heard that mocks are gonna be start soon from may 23...and i have to brush up my basic skill once again to appear for Mocks....but things are same at my office...i am unable to devote even 1 hr there...i am afraid about my mock scores...if they will be bad then it will decrease my confidence...and i dont want this....:-(...also it will take 1-1.5 months to brush up basics...
can you suggest me how to prepare for maths and DI(as i am poor in both) in office working hours...because i cant take up the preparation material there and practice infront of my whole team..
Seniors and people who faced these type of situations before can suggest something as their suggestions matters a lot...
thanks in advance..

Hi Arun,
Your work ex should count considering it as an special case I think. although CAT requires you to have full time work ex after grads. But I would suggest you should go for it. Other exams like SNAP etc. will also be great for you.
Best of luck and do drop in emails to concerned exam cells oonce there notification is out to confirm whether your work ex will count or not.

The courses that you can do: a. NCFM b. Banking varsity courses c. Finitiatives courses which are endorsed by HDFC bank, Axis Bank d. professional programs like CFA, CFP etc.
The first three are short term courses. Finitiatives courses can last upto 2-3 months (depending on you). NCFM courses can be generally prepared for in 3-4 days. I have no idea for banking varsity courses (altho they are also short term). Finitiatives courses have been introduced recently so not many people know about them (altho they are increasing in popularity). NCFM courses are the most famous of them all
The professional programs are long term (2.5 years min..depending on ur ability).. If ur really interested for certifications, I suggest you google NCFM, Finitiatives etc...

usually engineers take CAT..get like 95+ percentile (And likewise in other management entrance tests)...get into decent colleges..take fin in 2nd year..join banks and NBFCs at hi-fi positions...u can try this..the thing is that if you get into a good college..there would be a tremendous value addition..(but obviously if u wanted to do MBA u wouldnt be asking such a question)...
now depending on ur background in engg you can join a bank in different roles..for ex..a friend (who was a complete computer genius) of my elder bro is working as system + networking administrator in Royal Bank of scotland at a cool package of 7+. Maybe you can go in for the same roles.
you can also develop understanding of the electronic payment systems, transaction banking etc. This should help you in getting into banking roles
A lot of banks keep sending notifications for IT banking officers (remember to check for these regularly on the net and in newspapers)..you can apply to these...however this process would be really long..
take some certifications which help u in understanding banking..the whole point of certifications is that u need something in ur CV to show to interviewers that u know banking etc.(at CV shortlisting stage).
for other ways I can only say that u forward ur CV to a placement consultant..and if ur prepared..u would get into a banking role..amen 😃
I came across an institute called GIIP in New delhi offering as PG diploma in Intellectual Property and Patent Management. It is a 9 month course inclusive of 3 months of corporate internship. If anyone here have any information regarding the institute/course/career prospect of Intellectual Property in India, I would be glad to know.
Btw, I'm an comp science engineer with around of 23 months of workexp, wanting to break away from a software developer profile. My previous attempts in CAT and other exams have not been that encouraging. So, at this stage I'm not quite sure whether to give CAT 2010 a try or not. Any advice/suggestions welcome..Thanks!
I gave HSC exams in 2009 and I'm planning to do B.A. through correspondence from Mumbai University. After B.A., I'd like to do full-time MBA. I have the following queries:-
1. Do Delhi University,Anna University, Bangalore University, Jamia Millia Islamia and institutes like XLRI, SPJIMR, NMIMS, MICA accept correspondence degrees for full-time MBA? I have heard that some Universities like Symbiosis and Bharathiar do not accept correspondence degrees.
2. Also, the recent notification issued by DTE, Maharashtra states that ONLY candidates with FULL-TIME bachelors degree will be eligible to appear for MAH-MBA/MMS-CET from next year. Is the same eligiblility criteria applicable in other states as well?Especially, Delhi?
3. Would I be eligible for admission to MBA institutes(for PGDM) in Mumbai through CAT score?
4. Do Universities in US accept correspondence degrees?
Please help. I couldn't find much information online.
I'm going to take CAT this year and also started preparing a week ago. I'm absolutely positive that I'll get a good percentile but at the same time I'm also worried that my past academics can be a hindrance. I'd be grateful if you guys could help me on this. Here is my whole life,
10th- 70.5% (2002) 12th- 63.2% (2004) I then dropped three years to get into a MBBS program. But couldn't make it.I never wanted to be a doctor and so was happy about it. In my Third drop year(2006), I also enrolled for B.Sc. in IGNOU while still preparing for PMTs. In 2008, along with a few friends, I started a business. But after 8 months we closed it down because of growing conflicts among friends. In 2010 I graduated in botany with 62.2%.
Do you think I have any fair chances of making it to a good college. Thanks in anticipation.

Some very reliable sources on pagalguy have told me about the CABM certification ( a pre mba professional certfification ) which is recognized by ISB, HAVARD , KELLOg etc . though i have known about its value can some more puys more in their view s regarding this? Will it be a good add on CV before MBA?

You have heard correct!
CABM is a good value addition and might provide you an edge during PI as well as in colleges which give profile based calls like S.P.Jain, ISB in India apart from foreign b-schools .

If you have time as well as cost of the course is feasible for you, i will suggest to go ahead with it!
I have some questions: 1. Do they provide placements also (I didnt find a placement link)? 2. To me, it seems like a complementary course, something which can add value (like u said) but not create value alone. Please give ur views regarding this.

I don't think CABM is a course, it's just a certification and no certification offers any placement assistance. This is what I got from the link provided by Vision.

1. As mentioned by Avinav Sir, this is a certification and does not assist you in placements but there are several benefits of course. You can go through benefits at this link CABM Benefits
2. It is a certification and i feel at this stage, we only need to add value to our profiles .. i cannot get what is exactly referenced by 'creating value' at this stage when almost all of us are graduates. I believe we already have created some value which has to be just enhanced ( addition needed ).

wasnt asking for myself..good to have knowledge about different certifications and courses..can tell people about them and maybe help them in doing so...
