Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

I am just passing out engineering (Computer science engg) (after jun 10)
can't took CAT 09 due to some glitches in Computer :-(
even i did not sit in a company due to CAT and other Exams MBA preparation
So finally got nothing :-(
So shud i take 1 year Gap for CAT or go for the job search(as there are large openings so not a big problem to get a job in IT industries)
if I go for a job then how job exp. would help me after 1 or 2 or more years for MBA entrance like CAT or GMAT.

Dude its always better to go for a job because u never know when u get through the colleges u want as the entrance exams can be very unpredictable....so go for a job prepare simultaneously as gaps are usuallly tough to exaplain and they certainly do bring a negative point into your resume which a person cannot afford due to the cut throat competition these days......there is as such no fixed no of years of work ex u need to get through a good college...depends on a very large number of factors like ur written scor gd pi extra curriculars etc etc etc .....

So work exp. would help me for the selection or it doesn't matter ,because I will work as software engg but wants to pursue MBA-HR then how would you relate Software engg exp. to HR will it help or not.

Work ex as a software engg is in no way going to block you from securing a seat in MBA with specialisation in HR but you need to prove to the panel that you have the attitude and aptitude required for HR..

Do aim for institutes like TISS,XLRI (pmir).
hey puys
hav decided to do some fin courses
what should i do CFA or FRM?
please guide
m waiting

Hi ,

I would recommend you to go for CFA level1 first as it will give an idea about the different aspects of finance.FRM is a niche course in risk management as you might not be aware of that initially and may not like as well(depending upon your area of interest)
Hi everybody,

I am an Engineer + MBA with around 2 years of exp. But I am not satisfied with my degree and my work profile (not inline what I want to do in long term), hence, m planning to do MBA one more time, from a top institute in India. I just want to know whether PGP course (2 yrs course) would help me in that as it has got a lot of market value. Are there/ were there students in IIMs who had a prior MBA degree before joining the PGP course? How much Value addition would that do. Of course I want to change my line (from sales to IB...i know its a big thing to achieve, but I am trying).

Kindly give me your valuable inputs. M also expecting some of the IIM alumni also current students to suggest me on this.

Awaiting your response guys

Regards,
C K

try executive mba courses.or specialized courses...hvnt heard of students of the kind u mentioned..still there can b exceptions...hwever there r students who did 1yr in mba out of 2 yr course in 1 bscool and since they got other good bscool, then joined it and did 2 yrs over there...

I am in a great dilemma, I am an average student 70% in ssc, 68% in hsc and 60% in bba, and it's getting hard to find a job. So with me having average profile, is it possible to get in a good b-school? Considering, CAT is cracked with flying scores.

Buddy,

Seeing current year's criteria ,
Among IIMs , only C is where you have strong chances to get in assuming you get high score .

Among non IIM B-Schools , you have strong chances everywhere except few which give high weightage to profile like S.P.Jain , but others have their door opens for you if you crack cat well and perform well in GD/PI.

Hi,
I have completed MCA and working in IT industry from last 6 years. I would like to develop my career in Business/Management fields and as part of that i am ready to go for higher education in these areas (Like MBA). I am not much aware of the options available and due to personal commitments i can't resign for higher education. So please advise me about different part-time/distance education programmes.

I am Sateesh got 90.93 in CAT 2009 and 95.75 in XAT 2010. I have decided to give CAT 2010. I am an aerospace engineer and presently working in National aerospace laboratories. I want to do MBA to start a company based on mango products which is abundant at my place. I told same thing in GDPI of GIM and SIMSR but they rejected me ( my 10th and 12th per are above 90 ). in IITM they told that i should not do MBA and should go for M.Tech. How to convince them and how can i relate my background to MBA. Mine is purely research work which is not even related to operations management.

hi,i need your help in taking a career decision.i am a 2009 b.tech passout with good acads.i got admitted in xime batch 16 .recently i got a job in hcl technologies for software engg.pay is 15k during training.18k after training.now i have two options1.join xime2. join hcl and work for 2 years and write mba entrances later while working.query : 1.but many of the ppl who work for IT companies ,whom i consulted said it is very difficult to prepare and clear cat and gdpi along with work as they have to work for 10hrs a day.is that true.2.many companies which come in xime are IT companies for placements.do they give a managerial role or technical role like sap for mba students.3.why do many ppl after working in IT sector for 2-3 yrs dont prefer to work in IT companies after their MBA.is there any specific reason.3.is xime worth joining in my case.suggest me based on the info you collected abt the institute.shoul i join xime or hcl.thanks in advance

First of all, please give sufficient spaces in your post to make it legible, else it becomes really hard to read. Anyway, coming to your queries:

1. Preparing for CAT along with work is undoubtedly difficult, but not as difficult as is made out to be. Many people have done very well managing both, whereas some people have also left their job to prepare for CAT. So it completely depends on an individual but surely, managing both the things simultaneously is not as difficult.

2. I don't know about XIME in particular but IT companies coming to recruit from B-schools do offer the profile of (Associate) Consultant, which of course isn't technical.

3. People don't exactly hate the IT sector, they hate the kind of work they do while being a programmer/tester/support person, probably because they find it mundane and want a quick exit. Yes, they might say they never want to return to an IT company but I have many friends who said the same while joining a B-school and later wanted to join an IT company. Reason being, the entire profile changes, and you would not be required to do the stuff that you categorized as mundane.

There are also some people who feel they may have got into the wrong sector (IT) and seek a change by going for an MBA. Such people would thus, not go for a job with an IT company.

4. That's for you to decide. If you think this is the best you can do, or you can't afford to take CAT/XAT etc. again, you can join XIME. If however, you think you can try again later and probably do better than this time, give it a shot after getting some experience. So just sit back, think a bit, and then decide.

Ask this question to yourself- If yours is purely research work, why are you opting for MBA? You have a very good idea, I think you should go ahead with your research and take it to the next level. Its always possible to do an MBA later in future if you wish. But I feel, for you an entrepreneurship course or something similar will be more relevant. You can start off small and later create your own company.

HI
i just graduated with a BBA in International business from SCMS(UG) pune and i wasn't getting through any of the good colleges for MBA so i dropped an year i was looking forward to doing a course in marketing management.
So is it a good idea to intern with an advertising firm in the client servicing department and then start studying for all d entrance exams from august.
or to work somewhere and juggle work and d entrance preparations (which i doubt ill be able to do) , because from what i've heard the college's look down upon you if you take a one year break and do nothing except "STUDY" for the entrance exams..I' really tensed because i don't want to end up wasting an year .Looking forward to your suggestions

Thank You

Please don't post the same query again and again. Yes, anyone can go for IT specialization. You should find this thread helpful:

Yes,you can surely pursue MBA(IT)

There is no compulsion ;that only a student with a science background can join. There are people with commerce and arts background who take this course. Its true that initially they face a lot of problem but with time they learn and adapt and come out with flying colors.

One can expect a designation of Busness Analyst,System Analyst,Business Developer,Entry level PM's ,Application designer,Pre-Sales Executive etc.

Hi guys,

I want to be a bit straight while delivering what I want...please go through...

I want a Managerial position in a Mineral(coal,iron ore,Limestone,Barytes) Based firm which :

1. Trades with atleast 3 such kind of minerals.
2. Main source of revenue is through exports

The position should have more focus on communicating with existing clients and trying to get new clients and export orders from my cabin (mostly).I know that the pay that I get here is not too high and there are few such companies.

Now I would like to know

1.The names of top companies in india in this Mineral field.
2. which is the MBA specialization that I need to do to enter to fulfill my dream
3.pls provide the names of B-schools which provide placement in Mineral,Paint,Rubber,Glass,Ceramic....but not regular IT,Bank,Insurance and Automobile companies.I know that those colleges are challenging to fine but if u know please throw some light on it.So that I can have friends even in those industries as well
4. What is the apx pay that I can receive in such company?

CAT as it is too ahead of my knowledge levels. I can only think of JMET,MAT.Suggest me good B-schools in North region(Mumbai,Delhi,Noida...) which provides placement in Mineral,Paint,Rubber,Glass,Ceramic manufacturing companies.......
