I hve enrolled for PGCBM - IIM Indore & XLRI as well. Cleared the test by Edulive - IIM Indore technology partner, got a call to pay the 1st installment. Yet to pay the 1st installment though... Dont have much idea about the amrket value.
There seems to be no classes for this course, u can sit at home & learn via video conferencing??
Pls suggest if this would be a better option or to wait for the XLRI shortlisting.

Merlyn.

Merlyn,
I will not get into specifics of individual programs. But sharing some high-level perspectives that you (and others in a similar dilemma) could consider.
There are so many flavours of MBA in the market that it can get pretty confusing - full time MBA, part-time, distance education (tech based or correspondence), 1 yr vs 2 yrs.
Important thing to note is that each of them caters to a different set of candidates. Comparing one category with another would be like comparing apples to oranges.
So figure out what you want from the entire process first and then see if any or all of your short-listed options will help you get there. For instance, if it is knowledge you are looking for, then pretty much all the programs will offer it with varying degrees of effectiveness.
If it's a career change you are looking for, then nothing works better than a strong, full-time program.
Similarly consider aspects like post-MBA opportunities, improving inter-personal skills, networking...and of course the factor you had in mind...market value. It's easier to include or exclude options after that.
Good luck, buddy!

Thnx Sameer!!

Hello Pals,
I am in a dilemma and need your opinion. I am 24 years old (25 running) and working in a private company as Office Manager (job profile is basically secretarial and office operations) (18.5 k per month take home) but the job is not stable it is a project office job and the project will be finished by 2013.
My academics are as follows -
10th - 2002 - 88%
12th - 2004 - 72%
B.Sc.(PCM) - 2007 - 45%
MA (Economics) - 2009 - 59%
Since my family is economically weak so i started working immediately after passing my 12th and been working since to support my family as a result my grades dipped in graduation.
Now i am realising that my career is not going anywhere and is not stable. I have the following options -
1. Carry on with the job and let it as it is
2. Give MAT and try MBA/PGDM from some C grade college (HR/FINANCE)
3. Redo graduation obtain good percentage and then try for CAT (another three years required for graduation) (HR/FINANCE)
One more thing my family cannot fund my education and I will be required to take education loan from banks (worth considering that the course should not be expensive and i should be able to get bank loan without any collateral securities).
What will be the best approach in your opinion taking into consideration the financial limits i have.
Looking forward to hear your minds. Hope that with your inputs i will give a definite path to my career.
Thanks & Regards
Thnx Sameer!!

Merlyn,
A few quick points (hope you take them sportingly) on why it is not a good idea to use sms lingo on 'serious' MBA discussion threads.
It appears amateurish (the whole world can read your posts), confusing (for the uninitiated 'dis cnt waste mre' could mean anything depending on the vowels one fills in) gives the (probably incorrect) impression that the candidate isn't mature yet to handle management roles yet. Plus unlike twitter and sms, there are no character limits here.
Right, now that we've taken care of the hygiene factors. moving on to the main query, which I hope I've interpreted correctly (after reading it thrice π ).
If you aren't keen on going through a revision (though I wouldn't agree that a masters degree would just be a re-hash of the undergrad course) then you have a few options:
- don't jump into an MBA program at this stage. Spend a few years working in the corporate world, get some solid experience and then figure out what where you want to take your career. At that point in time, you'd have a better choice of academic and practical training options.
- take up a specialised course (not an MBA) that'll help you break into the industry of your choice.
- you haven't shared your work experience (or was it just 3 years of studying for entrance tests?). If you have work-ex, try to transition into other related roles in the same company.
Generally speaking, the market value of any degree is directly proportional to how difficult they make it for candidates to get in (and graduate).

Hi
In my opinion, option 2 is the most practical one in your case. Do not go by what everyone says and just pursue graduation and invest 3 more years there just to become eligible for CAT.
Seeing all the factors mentioned by you, option 2 is most viable. Also, remember one thing college might not be very good in case you go for MAT but it is your performance in industry which will matter in long run and you can always make up for slightly lower rung college by working hard and performing well in job.
Also, prepare well for MAT and try to get into best institutes possible under MAT.
Hope this helps!
Hello....I am appearing for CAT'11 its second time at CAT for me....But i am not confident...Now my mind is diverting to GMAT..

Chanakya sirji,
Most Indian MBA aspirants speak about CAT and GMAT in the same breath. But the programs you would be targetting with these tests are significantly different in terms of entry criteria, class profile and post-graduation career options.
If you are targetting the CAT, I'm guessing you have under 2 years experience. In that case, it would be premature to consider GMAT-based international programs.
For now, in order to increase your focus, assume you only have CAT as an option. Consider GMAT after you have gained a few years of work-experience.

Firstly I am 22 years old and I am currently working in a MNC, but I have realized that what I really want to do is to teach.
I currently stay in Bangalore, India.
I want to take up MA course in English and Communication.
But once I commit to that, will I restrict myself to just teaching? (which I have no problem with)
What is the scope ? How will the career be ? Is it well paying?
Just want to clear all these doubts before I take the next step
Thanks a lot
Hi all,
Can anyone please tell me the long term scope of an analytics career? In terms of skill set needed, career progression, which are the companies that hire for such roles and of course factors like avg work hours and salary.
From what I have heard, it involves using massive amounts of data to draw patterns using mathematics and statistics which in turn will help in taking business decisions.
Since there are B Schools which ask for specialization even before getting in, which specialization should one target if he/she intends to get into analytics?
Thanks.

Since comparison of colleges is against the rules, i wont be comparing the colleges.
Also, the 2 specializations you have posted are different, so it is upto you to decide which of the 2 suits your current profile more and is in alignment with you career goal. Both the options mentioned you are similar and hence decision has to be solely based on specialization you want to go for and not on the basis of place from where you pursue it.
But once I commit to that, will I restrict myself to just teaching? (which I have no problem with)

Professors at good colleges are paid good. Apart from that, they get involved into consultancy projects as well. So, salary for professors at good colleges is not an issue.
It is one of the most respected professions and scope depends more on an individual rather than the generalized scope for the profession.

Whatever you have heard is correct :)
For getting into analytics career, operations is the closest possible specialziation.
Career has an average progression and working hours remain almost the same as that of normal hours of any organization. Not much field work or overtime required π
Salary depends on the company you join, so it cannot be generalized. In long term, in this profession you can expect a good growth in the vertical but horizontal movement shall not be easy.

You would like to teach what? Teach in schools? Teach in a PG program like MBA? Teach in UG? Also, it would be helpful if you give your background?
MA in English and Communication obviously has a lot of scope. If you want to teach in schools, this will suffice. You may have to take up a B.Ed. course after your MA.
If you want to teach in colleges (UG or PG), again there are additional requirements like NET/SLET. If this is the case, I would suggest that once you complete your MA, do start teaching and parallely, do a PhD (from HSS dept of an IIT) The career prospects will be immense.
About the scope, ya, it will be pretty much in academics, maybe few other fields.

Career in analytics is extremely rewarding because there is a shortage of such people. Typically, you would need a quant based post grad degree (like eco, math stat etc), training in SAS or other analytics software and a talent for data crunching). MBAs and B.Tech.s from premiere institutes also get into this field.
If you want to do an MBA, you can take up quant based specializations like fin and operations.

As you are a fresher, CAT would definitely make more sense. You can take the GMAT and apply at colleges like SP Jain, GLIM, ISB(after a couple of years) etc. But, CAT definitely has more scope for you
A word of caution though. As someone who has taken both CAT and GMAT, I can say that both are completely different exams and require different strategies. Once you are done with CAT, take at least 1.5 months preparation for GMAT by taking practice tests and only then attempt GMAT.
Also, even though the GMAT score is valid for 5 years, schools generally prefer recent scores (
Apologies Sameer for the sms lingos!! I am new to this forum so wasn't aware
My total work exp is 5 yrs with a renowned bank. Have done my Bachelors in management studies in 2006. Tried thrice given the CET but couldn't get more than 85%.
Got suggestion about the various PG courses offered by Top institutes via video conferencing so thought of giving a try before doing a full time MBA which i always wanted to do.
Currently EMBA (1year) & PGCBM (1year) are offered by IIFT & XLRI respectively via video conferencing.
Can you please let me know the market scenarios for these courses, will they add a value to my career with respect to knowledge & job opportunities.
Don't worry about it, buddy.sweetmerlu25 SaysApologies Sameer for the sms lingos!! I am new to this forum so wasn't aware
Can you please let me know the market scenarios for these courses, will they add a value to my career with respect to knowledge & job opportunities. It would be inappropriate for me to compare courses on a public forum, more so when I don't have too many folks coming to me for advice on them.
I would suggest talking to students who have completed the course and are willing to give you real (not sugar-coated) feedback.
If you are anyway planning to go for a full-time MBA, then why the extra investment?

Hello friends,
I am trying to collect information on knowing that MBA from which institute will be suitable for me.
I have 4years of IT experiance of which 1 year was at client location (Ireland) and believe me I am not specialized in any of the technologies.I have played multiple roles like tester, test lead, capacity and performance consultant and a team lead role.I do have some domain (telecom) knowledge.
To be frank even I am struggling to decide what would be the next step for me.I am gold medallist in my engineering from one of the autonomous university in hyderabad but today I am worried what next I can do that would make me comfortable in my long term career..
I have decided to go for MBA but not able to decide why I wanna do MBA.If I continue to perform good in my current role it would make me reach to a manager role in next two years.I am more interested in project management/people management/general management kind of roles.
I need some suggestions that would help me to set my career path.I can wait for 2 more years and then do MBA but during these two years I would like to do something valuable that will be also helpful for me to grow after I do my MBA.
I would appreciate suggestions on what should be my approach for next two years and which colleges I should aim after that? To add I will be more interested to go for GMAT rather than CAT and would like to opt only for MBA colleges in India.
Cheers,
Wasim
