Personal Dilemma Related Queries

I have one very serious query.
Actually i worked for 23 months in power industry right after my graduation in reputed MNC. Now i left my job in August 2011, as i met an accident in my job site and hence i was out for a month from all my day to day activities. As also i was not satisfied with my profile and due to very tight shedule in my job i and more specially my parrent decided to quit your job and prepare for MBA entrance, and hence that i am doing.
What i want to know ,is this going to show some negative impact during my GD/PI at respective institutes, and if someting then i should deal with?

Am in very much CONFUSED state now......!

BRIEF ABOUT ME
I have completed my education throughout in First Class and entire education from Mumbai University
SSC HSC BScIT ten MCA(PG)

My percentages are not good all between 61 to 70

Then worked for Cunix as S/W Developer 5mnths
Then worked for Infosys System Engineer 12mnths = TOTAL 17mths

Now i have quit Infosys since had family problems and had to stay with my family so currrently looking for job in mumbai.

Now the problem starts i am getting no job down in mumbai with acceptable salary so someone suggested to go for MBA and try utilizing this problem to your benefit. And sooner or later i was thinking of taking up MBA(but didnt knew that my will power is so strong that it will happen so soon).

So, i dont know much about this MBA. And am confused that whether i should go for full fledge JOB HUNT or Brainstorm for MBA.

A good guidance from expert is dearly needed at this moment.

And surely following that path what will be suggested,so expecting a true from heart suggestion.

As now have filled NMAT and XAT and will be applying for CET (NO CAT since it all happened so quick tat CAT registration was out before thinking of MBA)

few questions :
Can i get into good colleges which are those
Which more exams should i enroll
What type of MBA should be good
How should i prepare for the next coming months

I don't think it will be a problem unless you take up a plant (manufacturing) kind of job.

Hello friends,

I am trying to collect information on knowing that MBA from which institute will be suitable for me.

I have 4years of IT experiance of which 1 year was at client location (Ireland) and believe me I am not specialized in any of the technologies.I have played multiple roles like tester, test lead, capacity and performance consultant and a team lead role.I do have some domain (telecom) knowledge.

To be frank even I am struggling to decide what would be the next step for me.I am gold medallist in my engineering from one of the autonomous university in hyderabad but today I am worried what next I can do that would make me comfortable in my long term career..

I have decided to go for MBA but not able to decide why I wanna do MBA.If I continue to perform good in my current role it would make me reach to a manager role in next two years.I am more interested in project management/people management/general management kind of roles.

I need some suggestions that would help me to set my career path.I can wait for 2 more years and then do MBA but during these two years I would like to do something valuable that will be also helpful for me to grow after I do my MBA.

I would appreciate suggestions on what should be my approach for next two years and which colleges I should aim after that? To add I will be more interested to go for GMAT rather than CAT and would like to opt only for MBA colleges in India.

Cheers,
Wasim

I don't think a 2 year program would make sense for you. Given your work ex and given the average work ex in Indian 2 yr programs, you will have to fight it out for the few lateral profiles that would be offered.

I would suggest that you take up the GMAT year after next (next yr GMAT is changing, so may throw up random scores for the new section. Upto you to decide if you want to go for it) and aim for programs like ISB, SP Jain PGPM, XLRI GMP etc.

Make sure that when you are answering the admission interview questions, it should not come across that you are taking up MBA just because you met with an accident. You should definitely disclose this, but in the right manner and try to underplay it. Maybe you should portray yourself as someone who can bounce back from difficulties.

1. Your profile is good as you have a PG degree. But at the same time, your percentages are just average. Also, you have 2. See what all is open and enroll for everything
3. Definitely 2 yrs MBA.
4. Take mock tests, work on your weak sections, work extra hard on your string sections.

Buddy

Since the job which you will be doing would be a full time paid job, you can definitely mention it as work ex while applying for CAT.

All the best!

Hey Puys!
i'm a BSc Statistics student from Venky, DU (have not seen many ppl from DU in here) :P
anyway, i'm appearing for CAT 2011 on 31st of this month with almost zero prep.
have been giving mocks from CL using a friend's account..
my score ranges from 70-80 and quant generally brings me down. saying that, my chances of belling the cat is as low as Bermuda winning the Cricket World Cup. :P
i'm still preparing for this one and hope to catch up with the PG junta's awesome scores till the time i take CAT 2012. so, the dilemma comes in here..
should i sit for campus placements and work till the 2013 (when i eventually join a B-school) or take a gap year and strive hard to get a good score, a really good score!!
help needed..also, i'm falling short of mocks (as my friend also uses her accnt)
any idea from where can i get free mocks with new pattern?

p.s. i plan to take 2 mocks a day now onwards.

1. Work if you have an option. It really helps. And this is coming to you from a fresher who did his MBA.
2. Why free? Spend some money. Get some online mocks. I dont think it will cost >Rs1000

Thanks!
which mocks would you suggest? TIME or CL?

Thank you for the information.
So can i presume that if i opt for MBA in either Finance or Marketing i will not face any problem due to this(partial color blindness)??
also can u or anyone tell me that if i go for pursuing operation management from NITIE Mumbai will it b a wise decision considering my Medical condition ( i m an engineer n want to stay in a field related to operations/engg).

Marketing and finance may have plant profiles and operations may have a desk job profile. It ultimately boils down to what kind of offers are made at the program and that will be institute specific. I would suggest that you speak to current or recently graduated students of the institutes where you are planning to study and get your queries resolved.

Thank u sb29...by the way do u have any idea about what kind of offers are made at the program of any of the institutes ranked among the top 15 in India....

Hello friends, i'm Hrishi and new to the forums.
I"ve wasted 6 months after my graduation in B.Com doing nothing. I was looking for a job but there is no scope, only call centers are willing to recruit you. I dont see my career going anywhere if i dont take up any further studies. I'm very much interested in computers so i thought of MCA. I dont have the proper guidance so as to what to do and how ?
Another thing was a friend suggested me MBA in operations management from mmk college, bandra. It's basically thru cmte and does not require one to appear for cat,cet etc. If i plan to do MBA w/o the cet exam is it going to be the same or pointless?
I wud rather prefer doing MCA as i'm actually interested in this field. Again, it requires CET which i think is not my cup of tea. Still, mca looks like a better option. Again, are there colleges in mumbai who allow mca without cet and is there scope for it ? will i get placement after my education ? how does it vary from the one that takes cet score ?
thanks floks

Hey PUYS!!

I have to make a decision for MBA soon and I am still in a dilemma. Let me give you a background so you can understand my situation and advise me accordingly.

I am a Chemical Engineer who has been working for the past 2 years (premier job premier pay) and am now into retrospect about what I actually wanna do with my life.

Yes, I do enjoy the corporate world, its challenging, and I do enjoy the corporate benefits. All over, life in a corporate job easy, has you nicely sorted, with nothing to worry.

Now, when I look at the seniors at the Management and Board levels of the company, these are basically IIT IIM Stanford type people who've been in the corporate world their entire life and are nicely endowed upon. I look at them, and for whatever reason whatsoever, I cannot imagine myself being in that position. Theres something about it that just doesnt appeal to me.

So now I have got it clear into my mind that I wont follow the corporate path, and I want to start my own venture (be it whatever, whenever, I dont know) as soon as I can. I see myself as an aspiring entrepreneur in the future, even though at present I am pretty much 'IN' the corporate circuit.

Previously, I always dreamt of an MBA from a top university, but I recently attended the ISB seminar in Delhi and it sort of changed my mind. The presenter throughout his 2 hours was only talking about Corporate Placements, High Flying Salaries etc etc and I actually was bursting with restlessness because it seemed that that was what they are obsessed with. As soon as the QA session started, the question I put up was: What does ISB have to offer aspiring entrepreneurs, the answer I got was, honestly not that convincing.

So now, I have got it into my mind that what MBA colleges do is they prepare you the best for the corporate sector, for the best high flying salaries, Fortune 500 companies etc.

And since I dont want to take that path: Is an MBA really meant for me?

If it is: I know I cant consider ISB and IIMs, although being premier institutes with no doubt a great education system, they just dont appeal to me, as I feel they're strictly and solely exist to feed the corporate world. What other colleges can I consider (India or Abroad) where I can gain entrepreneurial skills rather than brushing myself up for an interview with a Fortune 500 company?

Help.

Help.

You can become an entrepreneur even after going to an IIM. You can be in a corporate world even after being a BTech. Entrepreneurship is something that cannot be taught.

Having said that, it helps to get perspective of running a business which you can get in an MBA. However, you will be laden with an education loan (or even if you dont take it, investment) that you would seek to return (or seek return from). To tell you the truth, every year only 1-2 students take up the entrepreneurship path in these premier business schools. The course structure and training at these institutes will be geared towards corporate world.

If you want to focus on entrepreneurship ONLY in your MBA, you may want to check out Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India

If you want to do a regular MBA, try to get into institutes which have some amount of focus on entrepreneurship in their coursework. S.P. Jain and SJMSOM are two institutes which come to my mind. Look up the members of National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). IIT Bombay has SINE as an incubation centre.

S.P. Jain has a "Start Your Business" program which you may want to look at.

Thanks sb29 that is really helpful. I'm checking out the links now. You're a student at SP Jain, what do you think about their Entrepreneurship programs? Also, EDII actually looks very interesting. My opinion is solely based on the fact that EDII is genuinely built to promote Entrepreneurship. What do think about the quality of education at EDII?

About SP Jain: In the regular MBA, the entrepreneurship courses are good but not great. As in, you can only learn so much sitting in a class. There are talks by entrepreneurs and there is a full credit optional project where you do consulting for entrepreneurs. But that is all I guess. About the SYB course, I don't have any first hand idea. But, I have heard its good and is one of its kind.

About EDII: Again, not first hand exp. But I have heard its good. But don't expect placements.
