Hey senior puys,
I need some help from you guys.
I am fresh mechanical engineering graduate. I got into TCS through campus recruitment and am awaiting to join TCS in 2012. With all due respect to TCS, i can't see myself among the zillions of the people in TCS. Added to that usually most freshers are relegated to the bench for a long time, my friends who already joined told me. Recently, i have been offered another position of Content Writer (full-time) by a content-writing and SEO company. The pay is not much but it is not very less than TCS. I love writing and that was the reason why i pursued this opening in the first place.
Now my doubt is what is the future of Content Writing in India? How viable is at as full time career? I also am preparing for CAT, and want to do MBA in the near future because I also want to be in the thick of the business. When I get to do an MBA, how will my experience as a content writer play out? Will it give me an edge? Will it be counted as a work-ex in the first place? Would I be able to justify the madness of it all?
Any help, any light on the position of "Content Writing/-ers" will be very very appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Hi
I'm one of the people who has been selected for the new programme that IIM Indore has started called the Five Year Integrated Programme in Management.
Incase you haven't heard of it/require details: Indian Institute of Management Indore - IPM
I wanted to know your opinion on it. I'm eighteen and no one in my family is even remotely associated with management (pretty much all doctors and engineers. And one professor) So I really have little to no idea about the scope of this programme and whether or not one should go for it.
I do believe it's a good learning opportunity. The courses seem interesting. Clearly these people know what they're doing considering their prestige. This isn't the end of the road for me education-wise. I think I will study further. I have a few doubts considering the educational opportunities in the future since they will only be able to provide me with a diploma. I wasn't able to talk to anyone about it much in detail but they said they were working on trying to get the degree from some other college but they weren't sure of it. They're saying that one can pursue a degree through distance learning etc. and they'd be willing to help out but how much will something like that be looked down upon if I apply outside for a postgrad?
Do you think it's a possibility that they might have a few batches and if it doesn't work as well as they intended it to, shut shop and do away with the course? (My mother thinks I'm crazy to think about that but I'm not sure) I'm trying to think of that as the worst possible sceanrio. If that does happen then what are the options available for studying further?
You all know so much more about this field than me. Please help me out here. I'm quite lost
So now, I have got it into my mind that what MBA colleges do is they prepare you the best for the corporate sector, for the best high flying salaries, Fortune 500 companies etc.
:
Sa_ill,
I spent over a decade in the corporate world 'experimenting' with multiple roles and industries. And then decided I've had enough of it. So I said bye-bye to the comfy world of monthly salaries and annual promotions to start my own venture.
And yes, somewhere along the way I got myself an MBA degree from abroad. Did the program help me? I think it did. Would I have made the transition without that experience? To be honest, I am not too sure.
You are right. Most bschools programs are good at getting people from companies and putting them back in companies as that's a pretty straight-forward, time-tested process.
Entrepreneurs are the guys who bend the rules in the professional world as well as in the bschool environment. So it's tough for schools to tell you about a specific path you need to take to be a successful entrepreneur. YOU will choose the tools from the MBA course and YOU will create an exit path for yourself.
- MBA or not?

The course quality will be good and the exposure will be good. But yes, your apprehensions are completely justified.
Let me point out some of the drawbacks of the program.
1. You won't get a degree. If you wan't to pursue MBA abroad, or PhD anywhere, it will be a problem. Also, your program is not an MBA or considered equivalent to an MBA. It is a hotch-potch.
2. A lot of learning in MBA happens outside the class. Batch quality in management education is very important. the PGP program at IIMs have the top 2-3 percentile students taking CAT and come from institutes like IITs, NITs, Xaviers, Stephes etc. I don't know how good the batch quality of this program will be.
3. Again, you are not crazy to think that they may shut shop. It is unlikely but not impossible. What if they find that point 2 above is true and the class quality is not good. I am sure they will not want to compromise of quality.
Having said that, a distance learning bachelors degree is certainly an option. Students from IHM (hotel mgmt) get a diploma. But they also do a bachelors of tourism from IGNOU.
I would suggest that if at all you plan do get a bachelors degree from IGNOU in something that interests you. I would like to reiterate that the exposure and the learning should be there in the program.
1. I understand the no-degree bit. While I know that the programme isn't equivalent ot na MBA, hotch-potch makes it sound so... worthless. Was that just a unintentional choice of word or do you actually mean it?
2. I understand about the batch quality. I questioned it when they chose me :P
3. Doing away with the programme is a possibilty but is it the worse one? It's the worse that I could think of, then again, I don't know much. Like I said, if they do do that then I would definitly be looking at further education. Does anyone know how bad a degree obtained through distance learning looks on an application?
In your opinion, should one/you opt for it had you been in this position?
Thanks for the help though 😃

1. It was not meant to make the program sound worthless but the choice of word was intentional. You are not getting a degree. You are not getting an MBA either. 5 years is a long time. Will you be eligible for an MBA later? How will foreign firms treat a candidate without a degree? You can't write "equivalent to a bachelors degree" beside your diploma (PGP students can write "equivalent to MBA"). What if you want to do a PhD or an advanced masters abroad? So you see, the situation is actually confusing.
3. Yes it is the worst possibility. Obviously given its reputation, the institute must have given a careful thought before starting the program. They wouldnt have started it just for the sake of starting it.
I really can't comment what I would have done 7 years back. I guess I would have been tempted to opt for the program given the IIM brand. But I would have seriously considered a regular bachelors degree and then aim for a good management degree at post graduate level. But again, thats me speaking today!
I have failed once in second year b.com from gujarat university and also i have many atkts.... but i am good at the entrance stufff and am scoring well in mock exams... will i get admission in good college if i score good marks in snap, cat or other entrances, inspite of such bad scores at graduation. plz hel
Hello puys,
Think I'm in a unique situation here. I'd a name change while studying in college ( for numerology reasons ). I'd to apply for CAT 2011 under school leaving certificate name. Now I've a conflict in names between CAT registration and my identity proofs since all proofs are under new name. CAT candidate care asks for Legal Name Change document. All these days I have been using only the gazette notification for my name change. Can someone tell what this Legal Name Change document is? Where can I get it? My notary has no idea what this is.
Hi All,
I have done MSc-IT and having approx 3 years of experience in Manual Testing (BFSI Domain). Currently i m looking out to do an MBA (Either in Marketing or Mass Communication). My Query is I really want to change my career as i Think i m not interested in Finance domain or IT domain..... but my Experince is in IT field... Will my experience will count in Marketing Domain after doing MBA in Marketing.. i m much interested in B2C or u can say on creative side of field (Advertising). As this is very crucial decision for me please guide me if you have any information or tips on this topic mentioned below.
1) Will i get good offer/placements in Marketing after doing MBA (In Marketing). what can b starting salary.. (Currently Getting 4 Lacs Per annum)
2) Will my experience get counted in Marketing.. If No then, do i need to start from scratch (Sales Dept).
3) What type of job/position will they can offer me (if exp counted thn wht... and if not counted thn wht..)
4) how much time will it get to settle myself in this field.
5) I am inclined towards the creative fields, so is there is any link between Marketing and Advertising field.
Guys please help on this... i really stuck with my career.
I was working with a company. I had to quit it in august and had to rush back to my home(cos of some family problems). Hence I could not serve 30 days notice period. Now, I've been offered a job in reputed mnc. I'm gonna join them soon, but the thing is they've asked for the relieving letter of previous co. When I told them about my exit, they said that they atleast need an resignation acknowledgemnt mail from my previous co. When I contacted my HR for the same, he straightaway denied. He's not even picking my phone. Now I'm in big trouble. If I don;t get any acknowledgment from them I'll lose this offer and my career would be spoilt. I'm restless and tensed. I'd like to get feedback and suggestions from all of you people about what should I do?
Please guys help me.:-(

Depends on the institute/ Profile etc
2) Will my experience get counted in Marketing.. If No then, do i need to start from scratch (Sales Dept).
I don't think your experience will be counted unless you get into a BD kind of role in IT itself. But I guess you may not want to do that.
3) What type of job/position will they can offer me (if exp counted thn wht... and if not counted thn wht..)
If you want to get into marketing for a product, then typically you do sales for around 2 years and then do marketing. If you want to get into advertising, you may not get account management right at the beginning. You may have to start off as a trainee/asst ac manager. The pay in advertising is low in the initial few years. But once you prove yourself, it picks up.
4) how much time will it get to settle myself in this field.
Again depends on what field and your definition of 'settle'. In a FMCG/telecom kind of company, maybe 3-4 years. In advertising, a couple of years more.
5) I am inclined towards the creative fields, so is there is any link between Marketing and Advertising field.
Get into MICA :)

Your academics will really pose a problem even where there is no minimum cutoff for marks. You will have to do a lot of explaining to do. Maybe you can show that you were good at other things (sports/extra currics) etc. Another way is to get some years of experience.
Is CFA or CPA a right choice at the age of 42?

HI guys.. I am a software engineer working in Infosys,Chennai. I am yet to complete my 1 year in this company. You see I am not interested in continuing in a software industry. Want to do somthing different and also earn a lot of money at the same time.
Problem is I thought of doing MBA but I want a clear Idea of a few things here..
1. Is CAT worth a shot since I am working and will not be able to prepare that well for next year's CAT? there is too much competition. What are my other options.
2. If I am goin for MBA can anyone give me a clear Idea of what courses are there with their salary details and stuff?
I want a detailed comparison of the different courses available and plan something based on what benefits it will bring me now and also 10 years later.

Hi
I currently work for a reputed Indian IT Firm.I have more than 6+ years of experience.I need information which is very critical for me.Please advise
While getting released from my project i dropped an email to my clients mentioning the same ,this has led to a issue where the customer reported this back to the management and management then HR was involved. Here i have received a warning letter from HR that i should not have done that and this has led to the warning letter. Also the same has been entered into my personal profile.
I am in a different project now but people know about this in that project, this has led to difficult conditions for me around..
Secondly if i am changing my company ,will this be disclosed by the HR in the background checks..
Is this something that will be mentioned in the service certificate.
I am in a diffilult phase.
Any advise will be helpful
thanks

Dont worry about that. Thousands leave/join IT companies everyday. Who's got time for all this?
Your current HR has nothing to do with you once you leave the company. New company will ask for 2-3 references, give names/phones/email IDs of some employees of your past organisation whom you had good relationship with. Dont worry, these warnings are normal.
Hi..I'm currently in the 1st year of my MBA...I'm facing this big dilemma on where to do my summer internship?...I'd like to know how important is the company and domain you intern in for your summers, with respect to your prospects in finals. I'm a b.com fresher and have been inclined towards finance..however could not get shortlisted for some of the big banks nd co's offering fin roles..So now should I be patient and be ready to work with a PSU bank at no/low stipend(which is obv immaterial) or get into good marketing role(my 2nd interest after finance)...Since I hardly got any shortlists for summers, I'd say my resume isnt dat gr8...nd neither do I see myself getting above average marks in my MBA batch..so after a marketing summers, what would be my chances to get shortlisted in good finance co's/banks in the finals?

Hi ,
I am Harriesh . I am Working in Polaris Software Lab with 3.5 Experience. I completed My BE (CSE) .
And now I am doing my PGWPM( Post Graduate for Working Professional Management) in GreatLakes Institute of Management . There specialization works differently in this course . You can switch the specialization according to the subjects in that term and you will get general MBA degree.
I have two question.
1) Since my aim is for IT Project management , and the course structure making the project so important , I want to know on which topic i should do my project that will help me in career in IT project management .
2) I need to ready my Resume for interview as respect to the position I am going. I am confused to which position i should apply ... .
i.e) Project Lead or Project Manager ....Because IT companies generally expects lot of IT experience for Project manager.
Thanks,
