hey below is my profile:

10th :80
12th : 85
NIFT : B.F.Tech (7.5 cgpa)

2 yrs operations management in SME apparel export houses (2 different in 2yrs )
1 yr retail merchandising and planning exp in an international lesser known retail firm.

CAT 10: 88 (FINAL CONVERT FROM IMT N BUT did not join as i got to knw abt its poor placements)
CAT 11: 93 (FINAL CONVERT FROM IMI)

pls can somebody actually tell me the below 2 things:
- Considering my 3 yrs work ex, ill have to start as a fresher only dat too with difficulty in getting thru interviews if i opt for finance roles.?
- Wat r my chances of landing up in a consulting domain considering my work ex, also i am interested in it.
- Wat r my chances of a BS profile considering i am from a non IT background

Pls see though my ctc is a bit low but i get all of it in hand which comes around 32-35 k, and i know if i stay in the same field with just one switch i can get easily 45 -50 in hand after 2 yrs.

now considering that fact that i might not be able to give cat again and might try for executive mba if time permits , is it justified to do mba form IMI where most of profiles are sales based (wat i knw and i am not interested in sales )in marketing with very less ops jobs apart from finance and dat too with with the in hand raging from 38-55 in hand?

I am only interested in consulting or business analyst kind of profile , so pls let me know should i take a risk of doing mba from IMI?

are there any other options of doing a 1 yr course in masters in stats etc with a scholarship such that the cost is similar as in IMI, and dat too with better placements and my interest kind of profile (BS or consulting)

Your profile is pretty good and I think you can work for 2 more years to do an executive MBA for sure..

Now clarifying few misconceptions

1)There were loads of Consulting profiles Offered and looking at your profile, Deloitte would have shortlisted you for sure but no guarantee you will convert it though
2) Companies such EnY /AT kearney offer either back end research profiles or Risk Consulting profiles
3)There were firms such as Capgemini , Exl , Barclays , Micheal Page which offered very good consulting or IT consulting profiles and their InHand is way above 55k

5)Companies such as Tata Motors, LnT, UB , DSCL offered very good profiles in operations but simply didnt have people left or people with relevant profiles .. So they had to leave empty handed .Ops is not fav at IMI

Now if you want to get into the likes of Big4 Core consulting front end roles, then Target the top 10 B-schools India

So think about it an executive MBA can be a good option too

- Wat r my chances of a BS profile considering i am from a non IT background Low chances but depends on the batch and/or institute

Did you study coordinate geometry? The slope of your earning post MBA may be higher than what it is now even if you start at the same level

I am only interested in consulting or business analyst kind of profile , so pls let me know should i take a risk of doing mba from IMI? This got answered and again it's your decision

are there any other options of doing a 1 yr course in masters in stats etc with a scholarship such that the cost is similar as in IMI, and dat too with better placements and my interest kind of profile (BS or consulting)I don't think so. Why don't you look at the Financial Engineering at IFMR

Apart from this, in case you are specifically interested in finance or ops, go to a place where these fields are taken by a good number of people in the batch. Otherwise your placement committee won't make enough efforts to bring these companies on campus for placements.

Hii all!
HELP!! HELP!!

my profile..

mech engg: 60% nagpur university

currently serving as a trainee engineer in a beverage bottling plant(pepsi).. fed up of working in a 12 hour shift with average pay (around 15k per month).. would have completed a 1 year stint around october.. but confused whether to continue.. thanks 2 my idiot boss who rates himself a geek even in his ignorance and foolishness.

whether to take the CAT or not? very confident of not even being eligible to think of iim's due to my poor grads.. bt may be with a decent percentile make it to the less superior ones.. also m thinking of leaving the job completely and preparing until nxt oct'(2013)..

hey really thanks for the info....and for clearing my doubts...actually

1. I am not interested in finance as i am for sure not in a mood to start again as a fresher
2. Operations again does interests me but here again working in factory or scm kind of profiles cannot keep me going for long for sure
3. Can u pls elaborate on the kind of profiles companies look for in BS or Consulting offer. . Pls ans me the real fact let it be anything as i cannot risk my 12 lakhs and 2 yrs of work ex and salary
4. Do we have any other 1 yr courses with scholarship (such the cost remains below 10-15 lakhs) abroad(be it MS) which can get me my target profile.

Hi Buddy

I can understand your apprehensions wrt to fees , it a huge cost considering the EMI cost as well

1)IMI is known for marketing and finance , Operations has always been a not so favorite domain here , not sure why ..

2)Consulting firms such as Delloite for example took a guy from BIT Meshra and having a work ex in Hyundai Motors of around 3 years , other 2 people they took had core marketing experience , one from coco cola beverages

Other than Micheal Page took a fresher , HR consulting Profile

Exl , Barclays and Capgemini Picked up people with IT work ex or background , this was more due to the fact that we didnt have many people with over 2 years work ex and that too non IT

3)Rest of the profiles i have explained already , Now regarding MS i am not sure that cost would be that low specially if done from reputed universities in the US or Europe .. For core consulting profiles even in US or Europe , hiring is only done at Ivey league colleges firms such as Bain , BCG so is the case in India with ABCLXL and I

Now i think doing an executive MBA could be your best option given you convert the likes of above mentioned or ISB 😃

Hi,

I have 33 months of IT work ex in Accenture.
10th - 90.2%
12th - 80%
B.E. - 8.5 CGPA

Going through the posts, I got to know that it would be difficult for me to move into finance or marketing after MBA due to my work exp.

Question 1: I wanted to know how good are my chances to move into Management Consulting post MBA from one of TOP 15-20 colleges next year?

Question 2: I heard that people with a lot of work ex in IT get IT profiles only during lateral placements. Can you please let me know the details about lateral placement process? Is prior salary & profile also taken into account while giving job profiles & offers during lateral placements?

Please reply!!

Thanks!!

hey friends please help me.

I finished my graduation in April 2011.I. then gave cat 2011 but all my efforts proved futile, with all dismal scores. I am a person with no work experience till now. Last year I dint take up any job as I thought of just preparing, and this year I was busy relocating with my family back to my hometown in during early months.Currently iam one of the helping hand for my dad in setting up his business in hometown which I consider most important than any job for myself. My preparation is going on but what is killing me is I will be treated as a person with two years of gap after graduation at the time of MBA college admissions. Will they consider me if I perform good? do I still stand a chance of studying among the top 20 colleges?

Due to this tension Ian unable to concentrate well in my preparation.I thought of getting a job once Ian done with cat this year so that I can also have an experience of minimum six months before I get into any college. Is this step of mine justified?

My academics :
Degree - 81%
Inter - 92%
Tenth cbse- 85%

Thanks

If your company (dad's business) is registered, it can be treated as a valid work experience. So your case won't be treated as a 2 yr gap.

Doing a CFA is a good decision buddy .. Not sure about the coaching class Job as nothing beats actual industy experience.. But since you are not interested in sales or marketing jobs , coaching class job is not a bad one ..

CFA would add value to your CV and show interest in finance , if you take admission in a good b-school next year .. so ATB 😃

I am a fresh Engineering graduate-2012.
My profile-
B.E -8.12 CGPA
12th 71%
10th 79.2%
Extra curricular: Secretary of student committee in college, Freelanced as a documents translator with an international NGO, worked with an event management company on part time basis, associated with one more NGO .

I appeared for CAT'11 and screwed up badly. missed IIFT, SIBM-P by few marks. Didn't appear for any other exam. Currently don't have any job in my hands and I don't even want to work in IT that's why won't go for off-campus. Plan to take a year drop and prepare again even started with my prep but recently since the colleges are giving out the final lists, strange results are seen everywhere. One of my seniors, with a similar profile as mine, took a year drop scored 98.5%ile in CAT, 99.9%ile in XAT, Still couldn't get a single convert! Not even the new IIMs and XIMB.
Got the call from new IIMs XIMB, XLRI but couldn't convert.
So this is troubling me whether his "Drop" is becoming an hindrance or what. I am confused right now whether to drop the 'drop' and go on for job hunt in the pool of monotonous IT world.
Please experienced ones help me.

P.S. While drop, I plan to work with some NGO on full time basis in my hometown. Will that be considered as work ex or will turn out to be a negative factor during interviews?

Most of the top b-schools have had IOCL and ONGC as recruiters this year ..

I think in NITs were visited by coal India limited

IT work ex yes can help you get BA profiles post MBA but is only relevant for IT companies ,for rest of the domains you start as a fresher

ATB

Getting some Industrial Experience , will boost your profile a lot , so first preference has to be a job right now

Second can be job with Coaching Institutes as a faculty , since you have good scores , hence getting that job would not be difficult and will give you time to prepare as well

NGO work ex may not be very fruitful as a work ex during the interviews buddy ( as much as i know)

You have got good scores and i think you don't need to prepare very very hard as of now , but rather fine tune your strengths and work on some weaknesses .. So right now get some work ex under your belt ..
