@[609089:Jeeethu] In any organization, once you move up the ladder, you will have to take managerial responsibilities. A degree in management helps as you understand the overall working of the organization better and how your role fits into the overall objectives. There are hard core techies who would love to do technical work only, but these are few in number. As you do not find your work interesting, it would be the right time to look for a change.
However, with just 2 months to go for CAT, you will have to work very hard to get a good score. You can attend a short term course in a decent institute to get your preparation going in the right direction. You can avoid the MOCK tests for a month, during which time you could get working on the basics. After that take the MOCKs and use the scores to analyze your areas of strengths and weaknesses. With a single minded focus you can definitely do well. Schedule your CAT as late as possible to get the maximum preparation time. Above all do not bother about the performances of others (it will be a distraction). Remember you are working to get a score which does justice to your potential.
Apply for institutes with cut-offs ranging from 75-90 pecentile. This will ensure that you have your options open even if you do not make it to the elite institutes. ATB
@[596720:bodosa]-i think its too early generally student start prep in 3rd year.just enjoy the life and try to improve ur%age in b.e as much as u canand take part in many extra-curricularactivity.cat is not about working hard its about working smart.
1 year total software/IT work ex in TT-TECH and TCS(2011-2012)
left TCS,taking a drop year and planning to give a serious effort at CAT 2013
i.e I will be preparing exclusively for CAT from oct 2012 to oct 2013....now the questions..
1)will this gap year be too difficult to handle in gdpi/interview..any -ve bias?
2)will NGO work ex help...is it advisable to go for it..i feel i only will be wasting time there..I feel i am a slow learner ane need time of about 1 year to prepare confidently for CAT.
3)how much percentile is tentatively required to get into any of the IIMS even lower rung ones...considering my profile
4)my graduation 71% is quite low for any iims..even lower rung ones??do i stand a chance?
I got to know that for CAT2011 75-80percentile was declared cut off for IIM kashipur/udaipur for gdpi calls....75-80 does seem managable..is it true..
any other experiences/guidance would be appreciated..
I also wud like to know if Joining an NGO just for the sake of addin an extra curricular gives advantage or not? Won't they see our genuine interest for such social causes?
preparing for CAT in 3rd sem only is way too early,I think...I was in your position a few yrs back...trust me anything you prepare now ..so early..wouldn't help you when u'll be needing it...in grad try to maximise your grad score + add extra curricular....mba from cream institutes only require a cutoff/threshold to clear..if say Mr./Ms. X is just above the threshold and you well above it..then inspite of that one having greater grads/extra curriculra activities, work ex,professsional diversity, general knowledge nd awareness etc will be preferred..i.e CAT score is not the supreme cririria but only a qualifying cut-off..hope I am able to deliver across the message..
@[368506:rohity294] - My opinion : Leaving ur job jst to prepare for CAT is a bad idea! the gap will be a disadvantage to you. but if u prepare for CAT and still be in ur job its added advantage Bcos the work experience adds up!
And not sure abt the NGO thing.
But my acad percentages is lesser than ur's.. I'm being confident. Y not u? I've only 69!
@[609089:Jeeethu] For taking CAT for this year, I think time is very less......but if you think you are good enough in matter required for CAT exam, you can definitely give it a try this year itself.
Also I would suggest you to join some weekend batch and also test series ....:)
i am working in a top IT company for about 1.5 years. I am appearing for CAT this year ,also XAT, NMAT , CMAT etc.
My profile is as follows:
Xth-83%
XIIth-77%
B.Tech-8.23 CGPA.
ExtraCurr.- Nil.
Work Ex :More than 2 years when i will most probably join a MBA institute.
With my current level of preparation , i am expecting my CAT percentile to be in the range of 80 to 90 percentile. But i am hoping to do well in other exams like SNAP ,NMAT etc
My questions:
1) What are my chances of getting calls from premier b-schools with this kind of performance??
2)What kind of problems in my career i will face if i do my MBA from a decent (but not great) college like ,say IISWBM , Kolkata or say from from Sydenham , Mumbai??
3)i also do not want to do my MBA on my dad's money so have to take loans from banks to pursue my MBA. So , in this context , how good are the MBA programs offered by various public universities like BHU , University of Pune/Mumbai/ Pondicherry etc? They come really cheap.are they worth 2 years of study?
4)i am highly motivated to work really hard in any MBA college i go to. So in the worst case scenario , are MAT colleges like Christ College , IILM worth joining if a person works hard there??
Please seniors , answer in a point wise fashion. i am really worried about this choice of college thing!
Do not drop a year to prepare for CAT. It is too big a risk to take. Working 2 hours an hour for around 6 months should be sufficient to perform to your potential. It can be easily managed along with your job. Life at top management schools will be much more hectic.

1. If you refer to chances in premier B-Schools through CAT, I am afraid that 80-90 percentile in CAT will even get you the shortlist from them. Even when it comes to other exams, you need to score high for getting calls from premier B-Schools under respective exams , be it XLRI under XAT, SIBM/SCMHRD under SNAP, IIFT etc.
Suggest you to re-analyze your preparation and develop a strategy to enhance your written scores. There is still a lot of time left and I am sure you can improve.
2. Not a problem as such, but it can keep you away from the profiles and companies that visit premier colleges and hence not prove to be an appropiate launchpad.
3. Not all public universities are worthy of the same.
4. Reply to second question covers this.
In my opinion, rather than working too much at this front, suggest you to put more efforts in working on your weak areas and maximize your score in written exams as much as possible so that you can fetch better GDPI calls.
@[580208:Sivshanth] Thanks for suggestions but I have already left it ! I am aiming to give myself the best possible chance...any suggestions how to justify it? isn't saying that I wanted to single task and focus exclusively on MBA preparations a valid enough reason?(hmm doesn't that show focus and motivation...1 year I believe is good enough to get an idea of Industrial life?)what say?

Hi everyone...before writing d query i wud like to request dat those with knowledge or experience in govt and pvt jobs shall only reply....well,i m writing CAT and other entrances dis year for a full time 2 year MBA programme(i did BBA in 2009...gave 2 attempts of UPSC prep..go no success der...nw i wanna pursue MBA from a gud B schul)...i have also SSC CGL Exam (tier 2) before me(i have got gud marks in tier 1 and the chances of gud posts r high)...exam is on 16 sept...my basic dilemma is-
1. hws CGL/SSC job(govt) as compare to a pvt job....
though i've read various threads on govt vs pvt jobs...but wanna knw dat are all pvt jobs stressful with long working hrs and targets....is der sufficient space for personal goals as well....jst asking dat whether its a prudent move to go for such(govt) jobs after MBA or i shall only go for a pvt job....i will nytime go for one whr i get to prove myself and gets sufficient opportunity for promotion and moving up in d hierarchy....a lot of trends show bout increasing pref for govt jobs(wich is reflected by increase in no of applicants by many times over past few years)....it wud be desirable if smone shed some light on average pay scales and wrk culture in govt vs pvt sector.....
2.by preparing for SSC CGL exam till 16th..m i risking my CAT prep...??
