Personal Dilemma Related Queries

@Jeeethu said: @Sivshanth Hello.. thank you very much for your reply... I had inquired about the short-term crash courses for one month.. all the institutions are charging 13k+ .. for weekend classes...I am now thinking is it worth 13k+... or instead i should just buy the material which is coming for 5k and prepare on my own...?As.. i have never attempted for these kind of exams before.. i am not able to come to decide.. can you please suggest..???Thanks in advance.
A classroom program gives you an opportunity to interact directly with the faculty. So you will get exposed to short-cuts and techniques for maximizing your performance in CAT. Preparing on your own is fine, but you may end up spending more time in trying to understand concepts. So my recommendation will be to join a classroom program. However you will have to take a call depending on the time constraints that you may have.

From a financial angle 13K is a small price to pay. The fees for a 2 year PGDM program at IIM ranges between 12-16 Lakhs.

@[316381:visionIIM-ACL] Hello. I found your reply indeed helpful. Thank you for sharing the fact about other puys getting their calls converted as well as the additional thing to pursue along with studies.

Thank you :)

Buddy i know where you are pointing too , but you see interviewers are smart , they will easily read whether joined the NGO for profile boosting or was there any honest intent in the decision ..

Best policy is to be honest about what you want to do , what you have done and what are you are doing and why you are doing it .. believe me we need some honest managers in today's world :)

You should be truthful. Infact if you have overcome some difficult personal situation and still got into MBA, it will work in your favour.

Many companies treat gap years with apprehension because it has been seen that if they give the same profile to a fresher vs someone who had considerable gap, the person with the gap becomes dissatisfied on seeing someone younger holding the same position as him. So, be prepared for that and be prepared indicate that you don't have any problem with this.

@[580208:Sivshanth]:Thank You sir. You are rite... I will join the coaching institute tmrw only.

My CAT preparation begins from tmrw.. I wish i will get a good percentile.. I will try to work-out as much as i can to achieve it.

Thanks for reply. I am interested in pursuing marketing as specialization. As my summer placements are going to start I would like to ask that do marketing companies recruit people with so large gaps as in my as summer interns. Also how should i prepare for my summer placements process.

Thanks

Dear All,

I am working in India's reputed construction company as Sr. Engineer (Mech) in procurement and contracts department. Here I am responsible for procuring potencial subcontractor for Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing services required for the 7000 Cr Project.

My scores are

10th (CBSE)- 82%

12th (CBSE)- 67%

B-Tech-Mechanical ( Deemed Univ.)- 8.02/10

My dillemas are as follow:

a. B-Tech (Mech) >>>> Construction Industry>>>> Procurement & Contracts

I am confused whether this divsrsification is good or bad. How to utilize it for my future growth.

b. I don't want to continue in Construction Industry. I am in office so have a 11 hr day however my collegue who are at project site have to work around 80 hr per week. Many a times they have to come on sundays.

c. How to change career /switch Industry so that I can get weightage for my experience of more than 1 yr in a leading brand?

d. How to switch with or without MBA? If MBA which colleges I should target keeping in mind my 10th,12th & Grad marks and profile.

Request your help.

Cheers

Rohan

@[612233:rohansinha03] This diversification is good Rohan. I believe you're best suited for profiles like Operations & Supply Chain Management. Considering this you should definitely look for MBA and should aim colleges which are known for Operations like SJmSoM, Nitie, VGSoM, SPJain etc.

@abhimukh19

Hi sir, i quite understand what you are saying. I am sorry I didnt give complete details in my previous post. Working in an ngo was always on my list, either now or later.
I completed my b.engg last year with 70%. In my second year of engg I and a couple of like-minded people initiated a group which aims at social service. We visited couple of orphanages and old age homes and helped them in infrastructure and their basic needs. I also volunteer for the 'art of living' foundation. I joined cognizant last october but software didnt really speak for me. I quit this july. Now, keeping in mind my long-term goal, MBA, will working in an ngo full-time for an year help me place myself in top b-school? (as far as my profile is concerned?)

Thank you for your time:)

@Ishii99 Hi, why don't you consider going for Executive MBA?
no offence meant, but the way you have portrayed your scores and the time you can devote for preparation, I do not think you would be able to prepare enough to crack the IIMs.. and with your work exp, going for b schools apart from the top 10-15 would not do justice..

So executive MBA or Part time MBA is a good option.. you should play on your strengths.. cracking CAT and getting into the IIMs may be a dream for you but then you should be able to devote enough time in preparations to realize that..
@debidutta I am not sure if you would be eligible for B schools with your 10+2 scores.. I guess minimum required is 50% marks...
Please check on the same before you start with any serious preparations..
@debidutta I'm not sure about all IIMs and other colleges but as far as I know, IIM Calcutta and IITs B-schools don't have any such criteria that you must have more than a certain percentage in your 10th,12th scores. Like for VGSoM IIT Kharagpur, the only eligibility criteria is that you must have a first class in your B-tech. So, I think you need to do some sort of research from your side too regarding various B-school's eligibility criteria and then prepare or apply accordingly as suggested by @mayankleo_1
If there's still any doubt, revert here.

@Red_Bull , Yes i have seen that except top 10 colleges very few colleges have 10,12 % criteria . Can you please suggest what will be the minimum CAT % required for me to get into

a good college ?Will be My MTech Post Grad will be a -Ve for me During PI ?

Buddy why dont you work and give yourself a chance to understand whether you actually need an MBA , you have done M Tech meaning you have inclination towards technical domain .., so give yourself a chance to work and gain some corporate exposure...
The first thing in a b-school interview you will be asked whether you are here to collect degrees or you actually feel you need an MBA and if so why?

- I want to agree with visionIIM-ACL. And if you plan to pursue MBA, you might also want to consult some great people from mbaqandaDOTcom. I just had a great video chat with some of the guys there last Friday and they're very helpful.
