I hve been doin a small research for smetime nw on laptops(Goin to nehru place,Tlkin to dealers etc..) and here are my findings---
First of all- there were 2 basic categories of comps available in the sense tht u cn choose either of the 2 types of laptops:
The standard 1.4-1.6 Ghz(Mostly INTEL),256 DDR,40 GB harddisk+the regular WIFI card,stereos,15 inch monitor etc.The lowest among all models in ths category happens to be a compaq around 37K.
The second category being talked about is what we call higher end models-1.7 GHZand higher(INTEL and also AMD),512 DDR,40-80GB hrd disk+WIFI+standard regular speakers etc. The price range of these laptops is well above 53k.
Nw the most important part-Aftr speakin to a senior and also my personal opinion is tht the fundamental thng to be looked at is the BATTERY BCKUP. The reason as also clarified by a lot of people is tht we dnt need very fast machines cause most of our wrk involves using MSOFFICE wch tkes very less resources of the PC.Unless nybodys interstd in hard core gamin or well heavy software,the lower end comps are fine.The battery bckup becomes important cause there wuld be times wen u r in the college and ur prsntation is 2-3 hrs away so u need good bckup to edit the prsntation and wrk on it till the last moment.Gves u tremendous utility.
Nw mixing the bth thngs tht i hve said==I cn surely say tht there r 2 options for all of us who r plannin to buy a laptop:
1.Go for a lower end comp and simply add a 256 DDR RAM internally thru the addtional slot provided in the Laptop.Ths is a standard procedure and nthn to worry about.Ths wuld cost addtional Rs 3000 producin a gud speed on a lower end comp whch u wnt, at a TOTAL price of around 41-43K.
2.I hve a model of higher end prices chalked out whch if few people buy turns out to be 47k and i m serious!!its COMPAQ M2254,1.8Ghz(AMD Processor),512DDR,60 GB hrddisk,DVD RD/WR(BTH),WIFI,and the standard rest of the thngs.
Watever Mr. Iceman,Mr. partyguy wrote makes a lot of sense cause we dnt need highly advnced machines to run simple MSOFFICE.
Mathew and Manu been tryin to gt a lil info so i hope ths is of sme help to hm and also others who hve been ponderin over ths.

A very important poinmt made here by Partyguy Sir.The laptops or desktops are not compulsary,so that means that the acad part can be done without having to buy your own pc...as the coll has engh resources for that.
Getting your own machine would of course make things a lot simpler and easier.Plus as far as the comfig we'd require for the coll purposes, I believe would be minimal...say cause mostly we'd be using MS OFFICE....correct me if I am wrong...and ya also surfing the net to get as much info to make presentations...again you really don't need that gr8 a processor or RAM to do that.
As far as I am concerned apart from providing me with the above uses my lappy would be my source of entertainment...to watch movies,play games,store n listen to music etc etc....that is of course in whatever lil time we get.Plus the fact that anyways I will have to spend abt 45 Grnds atleast to get a lappy,So I am of the opinion that why not put in abt 10 grands more and buy the lates version with a good config that stays with me for abt another 3 years to come.and trust me its not that easy and cheap to upgrade ur laptop.Its my point of view though.....

If ypu plan to take it b4 hand to SIMS then all you need to do is contact some dealers and they'll give you all the info that you need...its only after that incase you have any small doubts that we shld discuss it...cz right now i am just getting a sort of feeling that its more of a useless discussion that we keep havng......So frst do the field research and then maybe talk abt the config that u are getting and stuff........

2.Whatz this major minor thing in dual specialization. Say if a person is doin Finance(major) & marketing(minor) does that mean s/he won't have to study all the sub in marketing.Can u just explain a lil bit.

- when i bought it last year it was much costlier...the rates of these Laptops/Notebooks is coming down due to the abundant demands...!! .....
