Schulich India MBA - Admissions Query Thread

Thanks for the information.

So can we conclude that for both the programs every opportunity is same?
Though I have read the previous post, I was little skeptical about my conclusion.

Nishant could you site some shortcomings of spjain-schulich in comparison with the 2 year canada program?
Or do you think at reduced cost we will get everything same.

PS: I m excluding the factors of stay and teaching in India.

@ Garry - Hi, based on my experience when I was researching my b-schools .. there's primarily no shortcomings / advantages of either of th two programs - honetly. It solely depends on your career plans. I can give you the following key pointers as data points - decision again should depend based on what you're looking forward to from your MBA experience. I also assume you've read ALL the previous posts, as I have been responding to similar queries in more detail initially as well.

At all points of your consideration of the program be cognizant of the following points - to get the perspective / expectations right.

1) Consdier it always a Schulich MBA - if you're looking forward to some nuances of SP Jain in your learning - that wont be there much. Teaching styles / curriculum is all Schulich.

2) Be prepared for the rigor, multitasking and much more toil you need to put in as compared to the 20 months program. We're studying everything in 15 months what our peers do in 20 months.

3) The internship period would go down from 4 months (in the 20 months program) to 1.5 months in India Program. Please NOTE : Internship is not a mandatory part of the Schulich MBA. Students in main 20 months program sometimes, dont go for an internship and take courses during summer months. So that's your take again.

4) India MBA program gave me the exposure of both worlds - India and Canada. I feel while in a job you hardly get a holistic perspective of the India Business scenario - an MBA does give it to you while you're in India from Jan to June. Add on your one month Internship to it in India - all the more better. An internship in India helped me.

5) You would have to stay abreast about everything in Canada, while you're in India from Jan to June. Read Canadian press online, network with people there, network with seniors and alumni ... your job search starts when you land in Mumbai - dont wait until you land in Toronto.

6) CDC will be reaching out to you - both from India and Toronto Campus - while your india stay - however, the CDC sessions would be far more rigorous only once you're in Toronto. You need to fll that gap by your own due diligence, and reaching out to people.

7) In continuation of point 6 above, to fill the void I told above... all India MBA Students are assigned an official CDC mentor, Alumni Coach in India and and alumni coach in Canada... stay in touch with them, keep them posted all your moves , course selections, etc... - this is not available to Students in 20 months program.

Hope this helps.... all other points have been covered in my earlier posts.

Cheers
Nishant

@ nishant. The representatives at VFS center asked me to verify with the univeristy authority weather i am registered as university student or as a general student. I will have to use the checklist accordingly. I will write a mail to carol in this regard.

@ Ujjwal - Well honestly I dont remember filling up anything of that sort befire my application. Anyways, I know the rules have have remained the same, they might have just changed a few form / process steps here and there. Why dont you check out the VFS website for this... or call their service desk and tell about your purpose of visit to Canada.. and they'll guide you.

Please post your findings on this thread so that everyone can benefit. Thanks mate !

Cheers,
Nishant

Hi Nishant,

Will be of great help if you can give an average estimate of the total cost (including all possible expenses; flight tickets, living costs in Mumbai & Canada, books, clothings etc).
Understand this figure would vary on personal choices, but will be very helpful if there is definite figure to start with.

N.B My estimate is 26 - 28 lacs, can't afford any surprises in the middle of the course! :-)

thanks

I got the following questions offline from some of the new admits - thought of sharing with everyone:

QUESTION - 1. If I can work out the finances of the 1st year fees and I need a loan only for financing my 2nd year at Schulich, can I apply for it later or do I have to have the complete finances ready(inclusive of the loan) when I enter the course in Jan 2011 or rather at the time of visa processing? The reason I ask this is that the interest period is going to increase by almost a year if I take a 15 lakh loan now which means an additional interest of about 1.8 lakhs. I hope my question seems reasonable. I'm not very well aware of the visa norms yet.
MY RESPONSE: You should apply for the loan now, and get the loan sanctioned. Banks wont charge you the interest till you get the amount disbursed. So if you need that amount in September ask for the bank at that time. This loan approval letter from the bank will be a "good to have" document during your visa application. Normally visa application asks you to suffice your first year stay expenses in Canada - but if you can append this letter to it.. then why not. Applying for loans in the middle of the program in July-Aug would b a hassle.

QUESTION - 2.In the first two terms at SP Jain, how many compulsory subjects and electives do you study? When exactly is your specialization decided?
MY RESPONSE See the attachment with this post. It has the structure of term and the name of courses in your Year 1 (Mumbai Jan to June) and 2 (Toronto) of your MBA.

Best,
Nishant

@ Evin - Your estimate is right. Keep it to 28 lakhs. Add around 500CAD for your insurance (not sure if thats included in your breakup) and add 800 CAD for Books - these 800 CAD are over and above "Course Material" as mentioned in your living expenses breakup given in your admission letter. .. And budget 800-900 CAD p.month as living expenses.
I suggest everyone not to budget any RA / TA etc in your budgets - these are not too tough to get, but whether you'd go for them or not will depend on your priorities once you're in Toronto. Time would be of essence here... so if you still want to do it let it be a bonus for you at that time.
ANNOUNCEMENT

Carol Partland - Manager of Marketing and Recruitment at Schulich -has setup an India MBA Winter 2011 Facebook page. The page is now open to all Candidates who have confirmed the acceptance of admission offer to Schulich.

Hi,

Though most admission offers have been made, and the class size would be small - which makes the admission process competitive now - I strongly suggest you should still apply. Business schools look for diverse individuals in the class and Schulich is no different - being a Dentist you stand a good chance. You must highlight in your essays.. your entrepreneurial endeavors towards growing / setting up your clinic, and your achievements at the Medical college.
You can write to the admissions office and inform them about your application in progress, and inquire about the latest date by when you can submit your application along with the GMAT.

Though you have a good IELTS score, assuming that your under-grad education is in English - IELTS wont make a lot of difference towards your candidacy for Schulich India. Your good IELTS score will prove helpful incase you're planning to apply for a PR in Canada at some later point once you're here...

There are a few MBBS doctors in the main Toronto MBA program whom I know about. They are aspiring to get into Healthcare Consulting and in Healthcare Services Management positions in the hospitals in Toronto.

Hello Nishant & Others,

Firstly Thanks for doing such a wonderful job and helping us.
I have taken my GMAT and sent my scores to Schulich Full Time Keele Campus (I could not find any Schulich India program in Person Vue)

1) Since Schulich India and Schulich FT Keele are two seperate programs, For Schulich India, do I need to send the GMAT scores again?

2) I was unable to locate any admission deadlines for Schulich India program. One of my colleague got admitted into Schulich India Winter term, I wish to apply for Schulich India Fall 2011, May I know the deadlines?

3) I understand that only the infra is shared with SPJain till Schulich builds its own campus in Hydrabad. Does the Faculty of Keele campus come to Mumbai for teaching? or is the faculty local and dedicated to Schulich India program?

4) Are Schulich India students graded amongst themselves or with respect to Schulich FT Keele Campus - toronto?

Regards
Ayon

We are still taking applications to the Schulich in India MBA program, I don't know why you could not indicate this on the application, contact Carol Partland at [email protected] and let her know and she will edit your application. There is no September entry in this Mumbai option. we take only one cohort a year *January to June in Mumbai then August in Toronto for year two.
Your GMAt will come to the central office and be added to your file. faculty from Schulich do about 80% of the teaching in Mumbai, the remainder of the courses are taught by faculty we have worked with at SPJain... The degree you receive both from the courses and the teaching is the same degree as those who do the full two years on the main campus... don't delay if you are interested in the January class there really is a limited size.

I also got offer for Schulich India MBA program.

@ Ayon - While most of your questions have been responded to by Charmaine as above, I'll just throw some more light on a few points there.

1) Call up the Admissions off in Canada - numbers are on the Schulich Website - to check if you need to REPORT the score separately for applying to the Schulich India MBA program. Do let them know that you have asked the GMAC to send your GMAT to Schulich (Keele Campus) already. Mention you GMAT Test Appointment number etc..

2) Answered by Charmaine above already

3) One Course in Management Accounting and 2 shorter courses in Operations are taught by SP Jain Faculty. All other courses will be delivered by Schulich Faculty travellin from Toronto to Mumbai. All grading / presentations / assignments / course delivery are exactly the same as that on Toronto campus.

4) You will be graded visa-vis your peers on Mumbai campus only, while in Mumbai. You will be graded against everyone else once you come to Toronto - August onwards

Nishant

Hello ccourtis,

Thanks for your reply.
Actually I am planning ahead for the Admission cycle starting Fall / Winter 2011, While other B schools start accepting application at this point of time (Nov / Dec Deadlines for R1) for Fall 2011, I was wondering about the Schulich India Winter 2011 deadlines, and couldn't find any on the website. (I could find that Schulich Keele Campus application deadlines is 1st Feb, but then again Schulich India is a seperate program)

So from the data that I gathered, it seems that I will need to apply early next year as the admission before a particular deadline seems to be on a rolling basis.

Regards
Ayon

If you want to be considered for Schulich in India for January 2011... you need to apply now.. don't wait .
Classes start January 4. We will accept applications at this point until the end of the first week or two in November. However, you need to get it started.
If you are applying for start in September 2011 in Toronto - Application deadline (early deadline is Feb 1). hope this is helpful

Nishanth,

How many days will we have after study at SP Jain Campus. Will it be sufficient to do an internship in India within that period? Will Schulich help us to get an internship?

Regards,

Ganesh

@ Ganesh

As you might have looked at the Course Schedule ... you'll be in India from Jan to July end. Your course on the Mumbai Campus finishes by June 3rd week, post which you have 1.5 months to do an internship.

The school cannot ensure you have an internship, as its not a part of the MBA course requirements. However, you can surely reach out to the CDC - and students do that - to get in touch with prospective employers for Internship opportunities.

I strongly suggest to do an internship and you must start planning for one in Feb-March if you plan to do it in June-July before flying for Toronto. At least I followed the same approach.

Hi Nishant ,

Thanks for answering all those queries .

In continuation , I have 2 queries .

1 . As i belong to telecom background , having around 5 years of experience in the industry , my short term goal also revolves around management role in telecom industry , considering the Canadian economy and also the employers mind set and practices , do you think I stand chance into getting into telecom industry in Canada ( do companies like Bell, Telus , Roger , Shaw Wireless ,Virgin Mobile ) visit Schulich ?? Also as I plan to go for Marketing & Branding , do you think FMCG companies will prefer someone of my profile , coming from completely different industry ? This can really help me tune myself towards future and be more realistic in my approach .

2 . This one is simple , what basic laptop configuration is required , anything specific for Schulich .

@ Pravesh

REGARDING TELECOM MANAGEMENT

Bell and Telus visited the Schulich Campus this year - I am not sure of Bell but Telus does visit each year. 1 student from the India Batch, and 2 from main batch got calls for their Leadership Management Rotation programs. Rogers is the biggest in Canada, and I know of people who have got through. RIM is another one you can consider - RIM visits only Richard Ivey, as per my knowledge but people do get calls from RIM if they keep up with their career portal. I strongly suggest as always, if you are not changing your profile too much - like in your case you plan to stick with Telecom - its always better here in Canada.
Surely you can apply for FMCG cos. They prefer someone with a marketing background, so try if you can pickup and internship in Marketing for Telecom / FMCG in India before coming here. However, two of India Batch students were interviewed by P&G; last week - one for HR in P&G; and one for Marketing in P&G.; Both had core IT experience prior to Schulich.

Start connecting with people in your desired field on LinkedIn, etc.. from day one of your MBA - and you'll be fine :-)

"What between Now and January Series" ..

Laptop Configuration

You do not need any specific configuration for your laptops while on the Schulich Toronto Campus - everything works. 30-40% people have Mac Books and all sorts of wired / wireless devices >> No worries.

For SP Jain Campus - I prefer to have a Windows PC only. There are no problems at all with any of the Operating Systems, except that with a MAcBook you wont be able to run some Excel Add-ins. These are required in one of your Operations Management courses, and also if you're taking electives in Financial Modelling / VBA Macros , etc...

As far as your laptop is Windows 2000 / Me and above, has a Wi-Fi port, 1-2 USB ports, and a CD ROM, .. you're fine :-)
I wont be able to tackle deeper technical questions on this ..:-P You might want to visit the IT requirements page for York University - Computing (http://www.yorku.ca/computing/students/) for info on IT requirements at Schulich Toronto.
