Schulich India MBA - Admissions Query Thread

Hi Nishant,

The students of Schulich India program would be having their internship in Indian companies while the students of the fall session would be having their internship in canadian companies.Would that be a factor during final placements in Schulich,as I believe that the companies there might be biased to hire students who had a prior experience of Canadian work environment.

Also, what type of on-campus jobs are available and how much do you get a month for the jobs.Would the money be enough to sustain yourself there without taking money from home?

Awaiting your reply,

Thanks,
Melvin

Hi Nishant,

I have gone through all posts on this thread, however I had a few questions regarding this program.

1) What degree will be awarded to the students graduating from the MBA in India program. Will it be same as the degree awarded to the regular Schulich students?

What will my diploma say?
The Master of Business Administration diploma will be from York University, Schulich School of Business.

The word diploma troubles me. Will it be like a proper MBA degree?

2) Also, this course is approved by AICTE, however, if I wish to look for jobs elsewhere, say in Canada or US even, will companies there consider this program as a valid MBA?

3) Regarding internship during the 1.5 month students have before flying to Canada, can you shed some light as to how you gained it? Was CDC helpful in your internship search process?

4) Any comments about the placement offers of your batchmates?

Thank you.
CONGRATULATIONS

Hi All - mid-term exams kept me busy over the weekend so I wasnt able to come back to your queries on time. Anyways so here I am - will answer it all one by one - with all the candidness as always

I'm quoting some questions by Yashita and Melvin and my responses alongside...

1) I have gone through all posts on this thread, however I had a few questions regarding this program. What degree will be awarded to the students graduating from the MBA in India program. Will it be same as the degree awarded to the regular Schulich students?

All I can say is I have seen the degree certificate myself, and it mentioned "Masters in Business Administration" right on top. In my opinion that should not worry you at all -

2) Also, this course is approved by AICTE, however, if I wish to look for jobs elsewhere, say in Canada or US even, will companies there consider this program as a valid MBA?
Yes, its a world renowned degree, and the AICTE approval has been sought because the program is being driven in India on an Indian school's facility (currently). Read Charmaine Courtis' posts on previous pages. This does not mean this program is not recognized by other world-class bodies... I'm glad someone questioned the AICTE quality .. lol. Folks the Schulich MBA is more than 35-40 years old now.... chill. I met someone working for the City of Toronto Govt. who was a 1981 grad of Schulich - then known as the Faculty of Management Studies at York University ... FYI In your classes on Toronto campus you'll have exhange students with you for one full semester - and not just 1-2 months of playful time - and these students are from IIMs A, B & C, AIM Manila, SDA Bocconi, Spain, Peking Univ Beiging, .. I feel that endorses the claims.

3) Regarding internship during the 1.5 month students have before flying to Canada, can you shed some light as to how you gained it? Was CDC helpful in your internship search process?
Answered in my previous posts already - your own network plus CDC comes comes handy.

4) You're from the MBA in India batch as well right? Cause I don't see you mention that anywhere 😃
Folks - Read the very first page of this Thread and you'll find an answer :-).. OOpps... I'm also mentioning this in all my signatures lately.. wow!! >> You just gotta read...

Yes, you're right - companies do have a preference for candidates who have interned with them. In that case, only Canadian internship is something that really matters - my opinion. They dont even give t much importance to your US work-experience - sounds weird but this is the way it is.
Also, these factors would matter for your to bag an interview call - once you're at the interview your core work-experience would matter.
I have been interviewed by 3 firms - I dont have any international experience prior to coming to Schulich - leave aside Canadian experience. However, my core work presented in the right manner in my resume / cover letter lead me to the interview. I stress again - Networking, Resume building, and your grades - You got to work on these aspects here at Schulich - there's no easy way out.

To your second question - please go through ALL my previous posts. This has been asked often.

Hi Nishant,

I have read the previous posts...but I was not clear about the compensation for the on-campus jobs.

Also is there any other Scholarship apart from one scholarship which is linked to first year performance to which we are entitled to.

Thanks,

Melvin

COMPENSATION

To Melvin's query...
Compensation is largely variable - it depends big time on the experience of the candidate. Also I didnt see any discrepancy thus far, between a student from Schulich India program or from the 20-months Toronto Program. Compensation for students selected with Deloitte ranged from CAD 74K to CAD 85K plus joining bonus between CAD 5k to CAD 10K. This is for Deloitte.

Banks dont normally pay that high - ranges around 65K (for the same experience), consulting firms pay higher. Marketing firms normally pay around 60K to 70K.

If you have really good experience - around 8-10 years - then expect in the range of 90-100K - (Consulting role) and bring the number down in the same ratio for Banks and marketing firms.

Scholarship and Bursary

There are opportunties of applying for Bursary / Schols even after you enter the program. I know recently people have got 500 to 5000 CAD worth of bursary ?(m talking about India MBA program students). But I again caution you, do not include tht in ur budegt... prepare for the worst, as if you wont get it.

Its basically academic based or need based... or if you're applying for specific concentrations like Arts, Real estate.. then also u hav all the more a better chance. But still people who got it were into more conventional concentrations like Mktg, Finance, etc... so... what should i say.. its subjective but you can surely be hopeful. Surely.

Hi Nishant,

I am working on financing my MBA at Shiulich. I have received the aceptance offer already. Can I defer my admission to next year if, unfortunately, I can not manage finances for this year's class?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Sachin,

I suggest you write to the admissions office and present your case. As per my understanding this would be on a case to case basis, and also depends if the school of looking forward to building a particular kind of class - as in what profiles the school is looking for in the next year. Write to Admissions I suggest.

All the Best,
Nishant

Hi Nishanth,

Will the Schulich provide any pointers for buying the books? Should we buy the books ourselves before the start of the program?

Regards,

Ganesh

BOOKS

I suggest not to anticipate / plan for any such expenses right now. Your professors will have special preferences on books and many of these would be based on the North American business context and will not be available in India. The School's India campus administration will get it sourced for you from Canada.

Also, you'd not need to buy all the books mentioned by Professors - there are always work-arounds so save money- you'll get to know them once you're there. !!

This is the best time to chill in life... I'm sure you all must be about to wrap-up office stuff and all.. Worry about your Visa,.. once that is done I'd suggest do the next most important thing >> Meet dear ones, pals.... have Fun !! thats what you'll miss once you're into the MBA program.

Anyways , Keep shooting ALL your queries that you have .. This one related to books by Ganesh was a good one.

Cheers

IMPORTANCE OF ACADEMICS During your MBA

Friends, as some of you have been curious to know about Scolarships / Bursaries... I should mention that your academic performance would be of immense importance in you gaining a schol. You academic performance would also come handy for getting your resume shortlisted for placements - especially for Consulting and Investment Banking / Core Finance aspirants.

Off Campus ACCOMMODATION

Important Tip : When you're looking for accommodation off campus do not tell the broker that you're here for 6-7 months. Tell them that you're at SP Jain for at least an year >> will help you get a good deal.

I have few more questions:

1. Is there anyone out here who is living on campus (Canada) who can give idea of expenses (average) on monthly basis?
2. Has anyone processed loan thru HDFC older than 35 yrs? I was told HDFC won't give any education loan to individuals older than 35? What are other options to finance your MBA?
3. Has anyone prepared ROI spreadsheet yet?

Thanks in advance!

Sachin

Hello,

Sachin

Dear Nishant

I am an aspirant for the 2011 Schulich India MBA. I would like to ask the 2 following questions

1. It seems that the faculty in the first 8 months spent in India are flown in from Schulich - Toronto to deliver the classes here , but would these faculty members be the exact same that handle the respective subjects in Toronto?

2. What is the attitude of the recruiters towards the India MBA as compared to the Toronto MBA , heard that some students have already been placed, do the recruiters prefer Toronto Schulich MBAs over the India MBAs. ?

Thanks for your help
Moin

@ Sachin - here are my responses:

EXPENSES - one of the most Freq Asked Questions - I can give you an estimate of the monthly expenses that I myself incur, but I can say that pls accommodate a margin of +/- 200 dollars:

Its - 900 dollars - includes rent (350) + travel in the city for projects / casual(3-4 times a month), eating out, grocery, mobile phone, etc. This does not include your infrequent expenses sch as winter clothes, books, etc

LOAN
As I suggested, please speak to Nationalised Banks for Loans. Education loans are not a money-making business for banks, so pvt banks would always have a discouraging answer. Nationalized Banks in India are more open to terms - however, their processing is slow, so pls act fast. I know SBI gives loan - even if constraints are tough like - retired parents / sponsors, married / dependents, etc. They also have a tie-up with Schulich so docs would get processed faster.
However, if you're really bent on the 35 years thing - find out all the 35 yrs+ folks at Schulich - you'll find these people in my linkedin connections list.

ROI Calculation
This is not as difficult as you think. Moreover you ROI expectations would be much diff than any of the others. For example, my min. salary expectations are much different than what would be yours.
Just consider the expenses you feel would be there, consider your family expenses, your kids' schooling etc as well.. and then prepare one. Someone else's ROI sheet - if at all exists - will only misguide you.

Hello,

Sachin

GRADING AT SCHULICH

Your performance will be evaluated vs. everyone else in the class. The following factors contribute to the net grade - usually.
  1. Class participation
  2. Individual Assignments
  3. Group Assignments
  4. Mid Term Exam
  5. Final Exam

Each one of these would have a different weightage decided by the Prof. of the course. The course content, grading, style of teaching is all decided by the professor.

Hi Nishanth,

I am not exactly clear about the following point mentioned in the student visa checklist.

Copy of Educational Loan from an Indian chartered bank equivalent to at least 80% of tuition + living + travel expenses for one academic year (normally first year's tuition unless already paid, plus $8000).

Does the first year refer to the 6 months period in Mumbai? If yes, will the bank loan sanction letter be sufficient during the visa process?
