Schulich India MBA - Admissions Query Thread

Dear Nishant

I am an aspirant for the 2011 Schulich India MBA. I would like to ask the 2 following questions

1. It seems that the faculty in the first 8 months spent in India are flown in from Schulich - Toronto to deliver the classes here , but would these faculty members be the exact same that handle the respective subjects in Toronto?

2. What is the attitude of the recruiters towards the India MBA as compared to the Toronto MBA , heard that some students have already been placed, do the recruiters prefer Toronto Schulich MBAs over the India MBAs. ?

Thanks for your help
Moin

@ Moinshaikh

My responses:

1) Yes the same professors handle courses on the main toronto campus. Infact the professors who came for us to Mumbai, were the best in their respective areas on the main Toronto campus - to name a few Prof Theodore Peridis - is an ex-Bombardier and was the head of the Strategy and Consulting department and York Consulting Group at Schulich. Professor Ashwin Joshi - for marketing - he does not need an intro :-)
Prof Atipol Supapol taught economics and also works for the Ministry of Finance of Thailand. See my post on Pagalguy (2nd page of this thread) for more names.. Google these professors.

2) Absolutely no difference. I was interviewed thrice - no where I was asked anything about this point - for them you're fro Schulich that's more than sufficient. If you talk in terms of percentage of students out of th total class - more Schulich India students got interview calls as compared to main Toronto class.

Hi Nishant,

The guideline from the school is to secure your Visa before you enter the program in Jan's first week. I would highly recommend the same - you'd be at sea just in case you have some roadblocks in getting a visa once you're into the program...
Talk to the Admissions office on this. Keep them informed.

posting it again just in case you have missed out.
Hi Nishanth,

I am not exactly clear about the following point mentioned in the student visa checklist.

Copy of Educational Loan from an Indian chartered bank equivalent to at least 80% of tuition + living + travel expenses for one academic year (normally first year's tuition unless already paid, plus $8000).

Does the first year refer to the 6 months period in Mumbai? If yes, will the bank loan sanction letter be sufficient during the visa process?

@ Ganesh - hey I'm sorry I did actually miss this one out .. Thanks for your post again.

Dissecting the statements on VFS / CIC websites is an art i know :banghead:. As per my understanding this simply means you need to attach the Bank's Loan Sanction Letter. And the CAD 8000 is nothing but what they consider to be the first year's living expenses. And you're right, first year in our case is the Mumbai piece of the program.
Though I'm quite sure of this understanding, it is always good to have multiple opinions on Visa application issues. Hope this helps.

Nishant,

I would like to know how many courses use case method versus how many don't?

Also, what happens to my admission & deposit fees ($2500) if my visa is rejected?

Thanks,
Sachin

@ Sachin

All courses will have cases - infact the Schulich course book which the school wi provide will have nothing but cases. You'll be required to come prepared,
(already should have read the case) before coming to each class. So all courses use case method. There's a mix of course learnings and cases in each course, but no course will deprive you of cases - that's the heart of any MBA program.

To your question on Visa, I would not be the right person to answer that - you can write to the admissions office on this - pls feel free to do so.

Hello Nishant,

Thanks a lot for your detailed response to several questions, through you I am able to gain reasonably good insight into the Schulich India MBA Program. I have one of my senior studying at Schulich - Toronto Full Time MBA and another friend of mine got admited into Schulich India this year.

On camparing two programs I am a little confused regarding the Experimental Learning aspect of the India MBA. More specifically, Various student clubs such as Net Impact, York Consulting, CSR etc are available to Schulich Toronto students from day1.

May I know the modus operandi for such clubs in the Schulich India MBA program? Your response will greatly help me in deciding between Schulich Keele Campus V/s Schulich India MBA Program.

Ayon

Nishant,

Thanks a ton for your answers and patience!

I have a question regarding GMAT score relevance for job interviews. What percentage & if possible which major companies ask for GMAT score?

Sachin

Let me answer that one.... Employers rarely look at GMAT they are more interested in how you have done in the MBA. Those that do are looking for the best students in the class with the highest grades, and GMATs. Hope this is helpful

STUDENT CLUBS @ SCHULICH INDIA and SCHULICH TORONTO
Thanks Ayon for asking that question - Infact missed that thus far in all my responses!

Yes, when we entered the first year in Mumbai last year this was clearly a curious question in our minds too - gaining from clubs and the experience therein. However, we've plugged the gap in the following ways - Thanks to the wonderful peer-group I have:

Schulich India Consulting Club - Focuses on taking real consulting projects with organizations in India & Canada. Members from this club completed a Service Delivery Streamlining and Governance Modelling Project for Rasliant Technologies India, while in Mumbai. Two separate groups from this club are now working towards two more live projects - 1) Go-to-market strategy for a healthcare solution towards old-age population in Canada 2) Assessing the entry into US market by a major Toronto based HR outsourcing firm.
Selection Process: Strictly on the bases on Interview, Essays, Case Study - will be conducted by second year Schulich India students - more details during your launch week in Jan 2011.

Schulich Marketing Association - India Chapter - This club for marketing enthusiasts, is responsible for bring most of the corporate dignitaries on the Schulich India Campus for student-industry interaction. We had close to 25-30 corporate executives visiting the campus from Jan to June 2010.
Selection Process: Details will be shared during your launch week in Jan 2011.

Both clubs above are recognized by and fall under the purview of the Graduate Business Council of Schulich - main umbrella body under which all clubs function.

Other Major Events / Focus areas during year 1 - organized by Schulich India MBA's Events Organizing Committee.

  1. Rockstar of the Week Title
  2. Internal Case Competition
  3. Schulich-SP Jain Case Competition - Prestige Cup
  4. Schulich-SP Jain Friendly Soccer Match

You can also get these details on the Campus Life Page of the Schulich India MBA website.

True, you wont have access to any clubs on the Main Toronto Campus while you're on the Mumbai Campus till June, and we started these initiatives above to create that learning experience for ourselves. Executive commitees of these clubs will address you during the launch week, and guide you how you can drive these initiatives now.
You got to make sure you keep in touch with students in the Net Impact, Schulich Marketing Association, etc while you're in Mumbai, and get active with their activities once you're in TO.
You will continue to be a part of the India campus clubs even after you land in Toronto.

bon jour,

What is the average gmat score of the past admits to Indian MBA pgm? My score is 640, and i have taken the exam on aug 29th, 2008.. till now i have around 3 years of work ex.. do i stand any chance based on these scores? ofcourse other aspects are there.. but just wanna know vaguely my chances.. :)

also i would like to know the placement aspect of the program?:)(i know this question might have been answered some where in the above discussions.. but i have to ask again.. sorry for the inconvenience.. :))

have a nice time, all.. :)

Cheers

Dear Nishant

Thanks for answering my last question regarding the professors.

I have a few more queries

1. I have worked in the Telecom industry for the last 3 years , please let me know which are the Technology/ Telecom companies that come to Schulich each year. As mentioned earlier in the thread , some consulting firms are looking to recruit people for their IT/ Technology ventures , do you think that I would be an attractive candidate for these companies with my background ?

2. You have placed a message mentioning the students placed from the India Class , thanks a lot for that , could you please update us with anyone who has been placed after that post.

3. You have mentioned in the posts that students from the India class would be allowed 1 years work permit after the course. What would generally happen after the 1 year if we want to extend the period. Also what is the time allowed after the course ends to look for a job.

Thanks in advance
Moin

The average GMAT for the current class is 670. I'd use the cliche "there are many other aspects out there"... and you know it already.. 😃 .. If you present your essays well, with this GMAT score... you should be good.

Regarding your other questions - I'd suggest go through the previous posts; everything has been answered in detail. .. Not an inconvenience though, but would love to take your cross-questions on those posts.. than just re-writing the basics :-)

Telecom and Technology
Bell Canada and Telus Corporation come on campus. They hire for their rotation programs normally, though the competition is really tough. Telecom / Technology candidates also get calls from CGI and Deloitte's Technology consulting practice. Speak to Nehal Adhikary - he's been working for TCS with client as Nortel Networks and has good domain expertise. Nehal was interviewed by Telus and Deloitte for Tech Consulting. Find him on Linkedin.

Recent Placements
There have been a few interview calls post that - from Ernst and Young and P&G; - but no new selections of late. Students are now getting calls through their applications directly to the company portal / LinkedIn / own network.

Work Permit
Unlike the US, you get an "Open" work permit in Canada - means you dont need a job offer to be able to apply for a work permit. You can stay in Canada for the duration of your work permit - 1 year. We plan to apply for our Post Graduate work permits around April and that will be sufficient for us to stay in Canada and pursue career opportunities. The work permit offered would be for an year, and through this time your employer would have to apply for an extension of the workpermit. Candidates hired thus far would fall under this category and employers are aware of this fact, so I dont feel that should be a challenge.

Hi Nishant,
Thanks a lot for all your efforts answering our questions, really helpful.:clap:
Have a few back to school questions this time..
1. Dress Code: Any inputs on the dress code followed in Mumbai(formals/casuals/business wear) will be very helpful.
2. Payment of Fees: I am sourcing my tuition fees from Education loan (Canara bank). How do we normally pay the fees from a loan account? Is there anything we should do to get the best conversion rate?
3. Holidays: Did you guys get any breaks (Easter week end for instance) before July?
Thanks

@ Evin

Thanks for your words - it has always been a pleasure.

Dress Code - no dress code as such for classes. But strongly suggest dress formally - business suite - for all presentations and when Corporate guest speakers are on campus. Dressing in shirt and trousers atleast... would always help.. you'd never know when you're required to speak to Professors / Address Fellow students / ... as a personal preference .. I used to prefer Shirt & Trousers on all days except Fridays.

Payment of Fees from a Loan Account - Get the Wire Transfer details from the school.. and hand them over to the bank. They'll do the needful. I used to think about forex rates but not of much use coz we have to pay on time... the best you can do is to delay your payment until the last date - and keep followng the forex market all this while ..dont smile >> I actually did that once

Breaks - You'll have a 12-13 days break around march - april, and a 1 month break after your India Term ends in june, and before you fly to Toronto in the last week of July. Along with this any holidays observed on the SP Jain campus - coz we're using their facility.

Best,
Nishant

Dear Nishant

I have received an offer letter for the Jan 2011 intake of the India MBA. So am officially a part of the program.

Thanks for answer all the queries in detail.

As asked , I tried to contact Nehal Adhikary but in vain, could you help introduce me to him as his help would be invaluable to me as he is also from the telecom industry.

The offer letter mentions that the on campus accommodation is for 15000 each month which sounds a bit too steep. Are there good rental apartment available close to the campus? Say in the Andheri W suburb itself.

Thanks
Moin

Hi Nishanth,

What are the facilities available at SP Jain hostel if I opt to stay in it?

Ganesh
