@ Tushar

Reading carefully through your profile, I can say that you'd need to further decide which area / industry to you wish to serve .. when you aspire for th Marketing function. Yes, Schulich does provide you the flexibility of pursuing a dual specialization, and also attaining post-MBA certifications by taking some extra courses once you fulfill the requirements of the core MBA. Myself I'm pursuing a dual specialization in Financial Services and Strategy.

However, for healthcare Schulich might not be the best place to go for. Schulich does have soe good visiting professors from Kellogg and their HIMP (healthcare industry management program) has some real good professors, however not the best in Canada / US.

To your question on Canada - I dont agree Canada is just about Finance and Consulting. I'd say its a market you can consider for Marketing, Business Sustainability, etc as well. In certain domains though, Canada certainly is a smaller market than the US. However, education standards are no less.

To consider an MBA in a particular country do go through / follow the financial press of that country - that's the best way to assess the country's growth prospects, and hence your career prospects.

Hope that helps.

Dear Nishant,

Thanks for revert.

I want to change my career from Sales to General Marketing or strategic management.

I do not want to pursue further career in Healthacare...so i think MBA in Marketing or Strategy will open up lot many other opportunities.

Do u think my profile is competitive considering 680/4 and 3.5 years of Work Exp in Siemens.

@ Tushar - I would recommend you to apply. However, with each new year the selection process would get more "rejection focussed" than being "selection focussed".. Hope you get what I mean. So keep adding new values to your profile through the remaining year, coz a lot of things matter - esp your essay content - and not just your GMAT and workex, which are both fairly good.

Hey Nishant,

I have already applied to Schulich MBA (Keele) program, additionally I wanted to apply to Schulich India, any tentitive dates when the Jan2012 application will come online?

You will be able to apply for the 2012 cohort beginning in the spring 2011.. on line.

I wanted to know the fees and other expenses for the whole course as I could not find the information on the website.

Also, since its a half India half Canada course , what are the prospects for placements ?

@ Nayas

You'l find the fees related information and much more on this area in the initial 4-6 pages - a quick answer - total fees would be around Canadian Dollars 47K - this was for the recent two batches.

Same goes for the placements scenario as well. Thats a very subjective area, based on your aspirations and past experience as well. All of that has been deeply dicussed.

Strongly recommend to start from the first page of the thread .. there's a lot of interesting information posted. Let me know should you have further questions.

Hi Nishant,
we, are IN and we all are doing very good!
Have a few questions on operations and my best guess is, thats a topic close to your heart :-)
1. Will you be able to provide glimpse on operation field, careers, opportunities one should look at and can you share your understanding and thoughts on this field, Operations?

2. I know specialization is something which we may have to consider later, but just want to know whether one should focus on one specialization or read more about different specialization topics which are related. For instance, I am interested in offshore operations (IT or Non IT), should I be looking at IT operations and Supply Chain management?

3. Will be happy to listen your thoughts on any group activities which we can plan on Operations

4. Nishit mentioned that you guys took a six sigma certification during the course, if you could share the details (cost, duration, effectiveness), that will be great!
Thanks again, maestro!

@ Evin -Thanks for your patience, and for posting these questions on P-guy. I'd say these are great questions - thoughts I used to struggle with initially.

1. Will you be able to provide glimpse on operation field, careers, opportunities one should look at and can you share your understanding and thoughts on this field, Operations?

Operations is very different when its for IT / ITeS (KPO / BPO, Telecomm, Banking, etc) .. as compared to Operations in a Retail or pure Manufacturing environment. Both have no dearth of opportunities in both India and North America.

I can share my thoughts on the first one, coz that's the side I aspire for - IT / ITeS Operations
  1. I better describe it as Business Process Management, so that recruiters dont confuse my profile as that of a core IT professional.
  2. General skills one should look to acquire / showcase - thinking about Current and Future State of everything, acquire a Six Sigma / Lean / Quality certification (really sells here)
  3. Read about various domains in Service Operations - Banking Processes such as Credit Cards, ATMs, PayPal, etc.. General Finance concepts on Order-to-Cash, Procure to Pay, AP / AR, etc ... Any kind of process outsourcing
  4. Choose an area that matches your interest, and try to become knowledgeable in it
  5. Career Opportunities - Strategy & Ops Consulting in the big Consulting firms, Business Analyst positions in banks, Process Improvement Consultant positions, Technology & Operations rotation programs at RBC, CIBC and BMO.

Question 2 - Next Post
2. I know specialization is something which we may have to consider later, but just want to know whether one should focus on one specialization or read more about different specialization topics which are related. For instance, I am interested in offshore operations (IT or Non IT), should I be looking at IT operations and Supply Chain management?

As I mentioned above, Business Process Management was my chosen area of work, but domain could vary from HR Processes, to Legal, to Finance... I chose Finance. I found in most of these roles, domain expertise is valued so I've chosen to specialize in Financial Services. At Schulich, Fin. Services is very different from Finance specialization. While the former, talks about the Fin. Industry, processes, strategic landscape in general... the latter gets into core Financial Analysis realms such as I-Banking and the like (too much for me to handle ). I couldnt find a course in Offshoring / Outsourcing... though there exists one in MIS (which is not required if you hav IT exp already).

SCM, Global Operations, etc... these courses I found were more focused on Retail / Manufacturing operations.. hence I dint go for them.

Question 3 - Sure. I'd love to share my thoughts with everyone.

Question 4 - Six Sigma Certification - We took it from Benchmark Six Sigma. Its a 4 day training, awesome experience.. happens in most major indian cities including Mumbai. Cost would be around 25K per head.
KPMG and a few other firms also deliver such trainings.. but I either found them too costly or lacking in content. Benchmark was awesome.. catch up with Shantanu Kumar on LinkedIn. You can use our reference.

Hope that helps !!! .. I enjoyed answering these questions:cheerio:

Nishant

@ Vikas - Seems like you're applying for the Schulich Toronto Campus program. The Avg GMAT, Work Ex, etc for Schulich India MBA batch saw a steep rise this year... not sure about these numbers for Schulich's Keele Campus Toronto program. Look at the other threads on P-guy for the Keele Campus program.
You have a fairly good profile. Nothing can lead anyone to confidently answer the question "will I get selected". 😃 But given your profile you can be positive. Write your essays well.

One has to apply separately to Schulich India & Schulich Canada?

Yes, you have to apply separately.

Both programs have different structures, duration but the exactly the same curriculum. Deadlines to apply are different as well.

See the following for basic information on both programs:

Do the recommendations also need to be separately submitted for both Schulich Canada & Schulich India??
Considering, one candidate already applies to an average of 5-6 B-Schools at least it becomes a little tough on the part of recommenders to write with full sincerity the recommendations. Also on part of applicants too it is an awkward situation to ask for recommendations for 5-6 applications. Wouldn't it be good if the recommendation part is atleast commonized for both Schulich Canada & Schulich India??:
