SIBM Pune GE/PI shortlist and related discussion[2012-14]

Hi everyone... I know I am a bit late in posting my SIBM GD/PI experience but the long working hours in office(thanks to a client visit) and filling up the SP Jain profile sheet are to be blamed...i took a lot of guidance from the previous years gd/pi experience that people posted..so thought of this as a duty to give sumthing back to the forum.. Let me start with a lil intro..

Work ex: 15 months (IT)
Profile: SAP workflows
10th: 92(CBSE)
12th: 89(CBSE)
Grad: 66 (:banghead: mdu rohtak) - a skeleton i have been dragging around through the numerous interviews I have given over the last 3 years
SNAP score :102
Calls : SIBM,SCMHRD (others - IIFT,SPJ,6IIM,MDI)
Previous years Rejects : IIMK,IIMU,SCMHRD.
Previous years Converts : IMTG,FORE,UBS

Slot : 5th Feb 12.30 PM.

Reached symbi society, SB road by 10:45 AM..boarded the 11:15 AM bus..reached lavale campus by 11:50...guys..its an awesome campus..aldough a lil far from the city.. but its worth spending the 2 most imp years of ur life...the SIMC crowd was keeping the campus alive and rocking...there was fest goin on.."ZEHEN"..and believe me the crowd was ...but I "tried" to remain focused...;).

I was in grup B..no. 3..the first digit in ur grup ID is ur order of day of interview (2nd in my case..5th feb as the process started on 4th)..3rd alphabet is your group..and last digit is ur order within the grup...

There were around 15 grups having 8 candidates ...but many ppl didnt turn up..mine had 1 missing..the grup bfore me only had 5...and many grups had 6-7...so overall turnout was arnd 85-90%..anyways...we started with our doc verification process as soon as we reached the campus...done with all of that in 15 mins..and then the long and torturous wait...All of a sudden the memories of the "handicapped" wait before the CAT exam came rushing back...you know my group wasnt the most interactive ones...

the GC tried his best to get sumthing out of the grup and start a discussion..but ...
GC was the same guy who was interviewed by PG some days back and tweets with the name "gabbarsingh"...two thumbs up to the ART grup..they did a grt job..

waited for almost 2 hrs ..all the verification was over by 12:45PM..but still they made us wait for 1 more hour before showing the video for the first of the two GDs....

the video was a clip cut out of an interview of ratan tata by bloomberg tv....NO AD :O...the interview was on how companies treat employees during times of crisis...

then the question was given based on the video..."do you agree with ratan tata's view of company's behavior with its employees during bad times (recession/euro debt)?"...

we were given ample time to think over the video...10 minutes in the common room..then 5 minute walkin to our GD rooms..and then 2 mins by the panels...so the discussion was bound to become loaded with opinions...

We were then taken to our gd rooms..where we first waited for 1-2 mins for our panelists(a senior advocate from Bombay high court and some guy from industry) to arrive...

The discussion started with 5 out of 7 for the motion and only 2 against ( i was one of the 2)...:P

Overall everyone got a chance to speak his mind...no one got into a verbal duel with any one...everybody just presented their views....then in the end everyone was asked to conclude in 1 min...everyone repeated the same points they said during the discussion..:P...donno how it went...but I was satisfied with 3-4 entries that I had made into a 10 min discussion...

Then immediately after that we were given the next topic- "Is the customer really a king in India?"..

I didnt get the topic to start with and hence was the last one to make entry into the discussion...ppl started saying abt how companies market their products for different countries...lik the Big Mac becomes Maharaja Burger..I gave a different perspective of how the behaviour of customers depends on the sector rather than the company..gave an idea how customer is a king where there is a lot of competition...and not in sectors like food where prices are supply driven rather than customers need.. but made only 2 entries...so not much participation..but a diff point may earn some points on that...

After abt 8 mins of discussion the moderators stopped us and told us that we were diverting from the topic and gave us 30 seconds to think again and then start...one of the mods asked to focus on the word "really" in the topic...but no body actually got what he was trying to say...
the group as a whole screwed up in the second gd...the mod seemed disgusted and asked to end it with a 1 min conclusion...

so i would rate the overall Gd exp as 8/10+9/15=17/25...

Then we were taken to another common room where we were given packed lunch (aloo poori)...was damn hungry.. had only eaten one biscuit since morning..and it was already 3...but had to finish it quickly as i was the 2nd one in the interview list..anyways...
rushed to the interview room...the panel was different from that of the GD.
The panel:
P1-Guy. visiting faculty at SIBM..probably in his early 40s. "The griller"
P2-Lady. Some HR head.

the interview:
Entered the room..with a smile on my face..greeted them and was asked to sit down...my butt hadnt touched the chair and i already had a question thrown at me...
P2: you looked quite pleased:splat:
ME: Yes maam..had a gud GD..and a nice lunch!
P1: what was ur topic?
ME: told.
P1: oh the first one also had the same topics..
ME (not out loud): (yeah..that is why it was a "group" activity).
P1: so u why the fall in acads?
ME: (i mean i had mentioned that in the annexure as a question not to be asked..still)..gave a rehearsed answer..i told them about being in core committee of inter college fest in 3rd year...also fell ill..told them yearwise percentages...all the dip was because of 3rd year..(i was not going to lie)
**the griling starts**
P1: there is a fest going on outside....there are fests here every month...u wont be able to study at all here...
ME: ....showed it as a weakness of time management which i overcame in 4th year...
P1: hmm (he seemed a lil convinced but then he had already decided to me.
P1: What is your job profile..
ME: told about sap workflow
P1: ok...i give u a scenario to design a car..where only the color is standard..what will u do?
ME: told..
P1: how do you do it ?
ME: via function modules, classes, business objects, methods..
P1: dont u use something called as EAI?
ME::wow:(what is that) No.
P1: how do you send data from SAP to non SAP..
ME: IDOCs and through XI/PI operations
P1: what does XI and PI stands for?
ME::splat:XI- exchange interface...didnt know PI:banghead:...
P1: dont say things u dont know about.
ME: these are teams which handle all of our Quadrem/Non Sap data transmission issues...they look after IDOCs( i didnt know much about idocs..why should a workflow guy know about IDOCs?)...
P1: IDOCs are old tech...enterprise application integrators are their replacements now..
ME: sir is this what EAI stands for?
P1.Yes..do you know a company by the name "!@#!@#" (don remem the name).
ME:no
P1: they develop these integrators.
ME:(not out loud).if i dont know about EAI..why should i know about these weird-named companies...
And all of a SUDDEN.....here comes the LADY
all this time she was going thru the annexure and watching with a "Tedi Nazar"

P2: You look too casual to me.
ME: :wow::shock::shock::shock::wow:mam i am tryin not to look too nervous..
P2: i never said you look nervous..
ME: (wTF)
P1: probabl what she meant is "are you frustrated with you job"
ME: started giving why mba?
P1: okay okay...But are you frustrated with you job?
Me: no sir. but i find it very monotonous..the only creative thing in coding is logic building...blah blah
P2: (didnt let me complete my answer).."What is your Passion?":splat:
ME:i said sports and a never ending search for an IdEA..
P1: what kind of idea?
ME: geve funda on entrepreneurship...some where in the middle i mite have said "flipkart"
p1: tell me why would you buy from flipkart and not from amazon.
ME: gave a wrong funda..indian company..less shipping charges...(went totally blank at this time...donno why it keeps happening to me)
P1: indian company huh...then you must be ANTI-FDI.....
ME: (WTFFFFF)said its a diff scenario all together...blah blah..
P2: what call have you got..
ME: told..
P2: what will you choose if you get thru SIBM
ME: marketing,,,(:banghead:
P2: sell me this mobile (galaxy).
ME: told all the specs...why is it better than I phone....blah blah...went for llike 3 mins..
P2: i only have 5000.. i cant afford it...whys shud i buy it>
ME: blah blah
P2: what is ur target?
ME: college students, office employees...
P2: but collg students dont have that much money..they wont buy it...looked towards P1 and giggled
ME: LAMBI CHUPPPIIII....i said..why wont they,,multimedia,,camera...
P2: (didnt let me completE)...pick up a chit

**the extempore**
topic: Sex education in India..
thought for 30 secs...took the "for" stance..and went on blabbing for 3 mins...
P1 P2-nodding
finished it ,
P2 - ok ..we are done with you..
stood up..just took one step
p2- what would you say to the guys waiting outside..how did you fare in the interview..
(as if she hadnt already with me enuf)
me - told i am not sure:banghead:...told her i was not casual.. i had been preparing very hard for this..
P2- Okay.
Me- thanks. have a nice day..

Came out...and took a long breath of fresh air..

i mite have missed out small details and a few question from the interview.. but this was pretty much it..waited for another hour and a half for a bus back to the city...

every one in my grup was grilled hard...and came out with  faces..

other panels were cool...most of them seemed

Anyways...all i can do is wait now...and prepare for some more grilling in the numerous interviews i have lined up (sick of attending them)...

PM me if you require any further info..All the best to all the aspirants...

Slot - 5th Feb, 12-30 pm

B.tech- 67%:banghead::banghead:

I apologize for the late post but just came back today and my laptop had connectivity issues.

I owe this post to pg as I have seen several interview experiences and they have been really helpful.

This post, even if it helps one person, my purpose will be solved.

AV EXERCISE:-

First of all, we were shown an interview of Mr. Ratan Tata. He was having an interview and he said that during these hard times the CEO's should not be seen as selfish people and they should change their image to people who are sensitive.

The AV exercise was good. We had only 6 people in the group. Apart from 1 person, everyone chipped in their points. Mine was good. I initiated the AV exercise and chipped in valuable points.

My rating- 4/5

GD:-

Right after the conclusion of AV exercise, we had the GD:-

I misunderstood the topic and in a bid to get the brownie points of initiation, I took off.

The moderator stopped me, repeated the topic and told us to start again.

But, I came back well with some valuable points and I was able to do justice to my GD. My GD was not too good not too bad.

I will rate it as average- 3/5

Interview-

Two people, one was the entrepreneurship teacher(P1) and the other was a corporate guy(P2).

P1- So, you have mentioned in the form that your father is into business. You haven't mentioned what kind of business.

Me- Replied. Told him that now he has quit his business and is retired.

P2- But, as far as my knowledge goes, businessmen never retire.

Me- Yes, Sir he has retired from actual business but he is into investments and all.

P2- Ok. You had 2 stints of starting the business during your graduation. Can you shed some light.

Me- Replied. Blah blah( Not satisfied with my answer)

P2- So, you will start a business after completing your MBA.

Me- Sir, I would love to... but it will depend on the situation at that time.

P1 was busy reading the annexure....

P2- What kind of ideas do you have?

Me- Sir, no fixed idea but, I am looking towards social media marketing.

P1- (Out of nowhere)- Your marks in B.Tech are pretty low. Why?

Me- (Shit! Not this question. Please no! no!) Sir, I was busy in other activities of college and was into 2 different businesses as well which took up my time.

P2- No problem!(Realizing that I was uncomfortable in answering the question). You did pretty good in your second business and it was a different kind of business as well.

Me- Yes, Sir! Explained the difficulties etc etc.

P1- Who all are there in your family?

Me- Father, mother, sister, brother.

P1- Are they into business field as well.

Me- Sir, younger brother is doing B.Com while elder sister is into business.

P1- Even your sister? I didn't expect that.

Me- Yes, sir she started a magazine blah blah.

P2- Now, lets shift to the extempore..

Rating- 3.5/5- It was better than what it looks from what I have written.

Extempore:-

I don't remember the topic. The only positives were:- I spoke for 2-3 minutes without stammering.

Negative- It was not making much sense.

Horrible extempore:- 1.5/5

Verdict:- Keeping my fingers crossed.

I liked the campus, hostel, etc.

Hi Guys,

Just back from Pune after attending my GE/PI of SIBM and SCMHRD. I am sharing my SIBM Pune experience here.
Center: SIBM, Pune
Slot: 12:30 PM, 5th Feb,2012
Profile: SNAP Score-94.5 Xth- 63, XII- 74, Grad- 68.45, Work-ex- 40 months
The process was smooth. A group of 8 was formed and a group co-ordinator was assigned for each group. No faculty involved at all. We were shown a motivating video about why SIBM-Pune(Indeed motivating). Documents were verified. And admission process started from here. A video clip of about 2 mins featuring Mr. Ratan Tata was shown. The interviewer asked to Tata that in the present scenario do you thing Asian economies are ready to take up the challange and lead from the front? Mr. Tata talked about the credibility crisis and CSR. The video ended there. A question was thrown to us that do u agree with Mr. Tata views that corporates should do more for the society? Three minutes were given to us. Discussion among group was not allowed at this point of time. All groups were moved to their respective panels after this.

Two gentlemen welcomed us in the room and told us to start the discussion. The ball started rolling. we were seven. I was 3rd or 4th to speak. Yours truly started with Occupy wall street protest and how public is skeptical about corporates. Talked about market at the bottom of Pyramid, Tata-Swach. Pitched in 3-4 times about how to restore credibility in the corporates by a transparent mechanism. Talked about 2G scam, Warren Buffet, Azim Premji etc. The discussion ended with panelist giving 30 sec each to put yours as well as group summary. Audio Visual Exercise ended here.

We were given 2 mins of break and 2nd GD started. The time was too short. Only 5 mins. The topic was:- "Is Indian companies capable enough to compete with global MNCs?". Again the same guy started the discussion and I was 2nd or 3rd to pitch in. I started with the 1991's New economic policies and how the Bajajs who were skeptical about foreign groups entry benefited the most. Talked about India's cheap labor, average age and English speaking crowd. Put a word of caution that SMEs should be given advantage over cash rich business houses. Pitched in twice or thrice. Time was too short.

Interview:
Two Panelist: Let us name them P1 and P2. Both gentlemen. Chilled out.
P1:- So you have worked in TCS for 40 months. Why MBA now?
Ans:- Talked about my Business Plan(Litchi:-)) and how I want to get into marketing, FMCG and learn marketing tactics.
P1:- But then you may not get a lead managerial position. How will u learn marketing tactics?
Ans:- Talked abt how I came to know business processes in TCS while working as a ASE. Fundas that you can learn things even if you are a small part of the process. Seemed satisfied.
P2:- You have written Mohammad Yunus as your role model. Why is the difference in SKS microfinance started by mr. Akula and Yunus?
Ans- Talked about formation of SHGs and felicitating women rather than men done by Mr. Yunus.
P2- Do you think India's Political system is outdated?
Ans:- Defended it. Said how the flaws are existing even in other countries. Gave examples of countries which are facing serious flaws and how Indian electorate has matured over the years. How India has survived everytime when West has predicted its crumbling. Gave examples of India's Partition and JP Movement.
P1:- Tell me the good things done by Nitish Gov?
Ans- Talked about four points- Infra, Security, PDS, Jobs creation.
P2:- Where do u see youself 10 years down the line
Ans:- Blah blah...
P2- Tell me abt your strength and wekness.
Ans- Mentioned. Said Public speaking as my weakness.
P2- How do you think this is going to impact you? You speak gud english
Ans- Thanked and talked about how i need to be influential to persuade farmers for my venture. Talked about Toastmasters and how m trying to improve.

Extempore:-
Told me to pick up a chit. I said that here comes the tough part. Both interviewers encouraged me and said you are going very good. It indeed helped. The topics were all socially relevent(as gathered from others in my group) except mine. I got very absurd topic- "We are as sick as we are secret". I was dumbfound for 5 secs. Collected my thoughts for 20 secs and spoke. Started with the quote of Osho that how being alone brings the best in you. Talked abt the inhibitions, fear and positive energy which are suppressed because of presence of others come out when one is alone. Talked about its negative impact that how aloofness leads to depression and even to suicide. Concluded by saying that its gud to be with friends but we should take time out for ourselves once a month, introspect and decide future course of action.

Thanks for reading and best of luck:-)

AV topic: the youth of india is not in sync with the realities of the nation (topic based on 'the hindu' ad mocking TOI)
Discussion: went quite well, except for a couple of persons talking about things irrelevant or talking to the moderators instead of us. Observed that these days, regardless of the topic, people tend to drag in social networking sites like facebook into the discussion and their effects on whatever issue is being discussed. Didn't look at them in the eye but have observed vaguely that the moderators had nodded after listening to some of my points.

GD topic: Privatisation leads to lesser corruption : Again went quite well, good participation from my side, only i doubt that, maybe, initially, I was not paying or rather pretending to pay enough attention to what others were saying.

PI: Different panel from GD. Two guys. One of them very fair and bald. The other a senior person. I will refer to them as X and Y. I wished them , they asked me to sit down and X immediately fired a question- Dinesh, tell me something about you that is not there in the annexure. I said " Sir, I have this another business plan, an interesting idea and they grilled me on it and said, then why don't you rather implement idea than waste two years of time studying here. I said sir, i have learnt from practical exp that starting and running a business in today's times is not a novice's job and i want to learn strategy, marketing, supply chain management and it would be very helpful etc etc. was careful to choose my words, i said "mba would be helpful" and not "necessary". then they said, we have dhirubhai ambani, why can't you be like him. i said, sir, i know my limitations and ic an never be a dhirubhai ambani. then he looked at my annexure again and said, you wrote something peculiar in your annexure to the last question, "the person who wanted to root out leftist, marxist, and maoist extremism"? but why, define those terms and why you want to root them out. told them how it was an existential threat and all, they asked me if i believed in capitalism and i said, i believe in the right solution to the right problem at the right time, not necessarily a one-medicine-for-all-diseases. Then they asked me about the business i have set up last year and how it was working, about my partners, what would happen after i join the course etc etc. Then they asked me, if one of your business partner would have to tell something about you, what would that be. I said sir, maybe he would tell you I am a person with courage, patience, and well.....good negotiation skills. X is excited. He says, "oh really! lets test them. Tell me why should i select you." I say, sir, I have entrepreneurial aspirations, unlike many other aspirants who just want a high paying investment banking jobs. There might be nothing special about them. but I have a lot of ideas, and there are more chances that i feature in the list of sibm-p's distinguished alumni than them. he says, i already have 2000 members in my distinguished alumni list, what would another one person do to me. I said, sir, as a philosopher said, it's the individual drops that make an ocean. Then Y starts asking me, Dinesh, what have you done for the society till now. (I have written in my annexure in the 6th answer space that one of my aims is to uplift the underprivileged through innovative means). I say, sir, some very insignificant donations etc., and then about how we had donated my grandfather's huge collection of books. he said, but they were not yours, what have YOU done, i said, i was associated with a so called NGO and did very few things which later turned out to be a fraud. then he said that's just a one time thing. what have you done for the society during your grad days. I thought, then I said, sir I did nothing. Then both of them smiled and and Y said, we are very happy that you have been honest. Then he said, try to find out, what your maid's children do, their problems etc, try to connect with the masses, it's a good thing to do....and i said, yes sir...then the interview was over.

7th feb mrng slot but was late due to train accident..
arrived at pune mrng 7 am for 8:30 slot..became hopeless thinking about what to do .
I just made a call to SIBM p..told all my problems .immediately they replied ki...aap aa jao 9:30 TAK....I told ok...i took auto and reached SIBM P frm station in 90 min 1000 rs to auto wala.
at that time it was 11 am.
I meet to one senior she told ki mine GE process is over.they asked me reason for being late.I told everything.
they said ok we'll adjust you in next slot 12:30 BATCH...finally some smile on my face...
after 1 pm the rounds start frm the A/V round....clip was shown twice....then I went in a group of 9 members..4 iitians ,one frm 3 yr work exp, one frm infosys ,one frm TCS and a girl frm venkateshwara...cllge...and me frm avit chennai.
we went to our panels .....I was 9th siting in the extreme left of all....15 min of A/V discussion all gave their thought including me...i saw one panelist was noting something about us that what seat no. no.. aspirants are giving the actual points...i saw wrote two words what i have mentioned....aftr that they told to summarize in 2 min ...it was a fish market in summarizing .....but was not saying ne things b coz ...if u interrupt n e one u'll lose points so when one stopped in summarizing i told two points ....was supposed to tell the 3rd one..again one IIT wale ne interrupted ......phir maine kaha....you just carry on.....that's it in A/V AROUND
WITHIN 20 SEC PANELIST GAVE US A TOPIC WHAT SHOULD INDIA NEED TO BECOME SUPER POWER IN 2025....
AGAIN the fish market
5 persons were speaking at the same time....
I don't know From vich place they have came...MY chance came on 9th while i was speaking telling the points that initally we need proper survey need to educate the children free of cost need to improve it's export rather than import....corporate world also needs to come in it ......we should our games standards in olympic dat much and repeating my points 2 wice because of the fish market.....I was scared with them....how aggressive they were....
all in all I got less time to speak.. but suddenly I realise that i BELONG to category.....hahahahaha...
PI- 2 panalist both around 60...one frm tamil nadu..one frm maharastra

I told bhah bhal....I told i AM the only candidate to get a SIBM P Call.....little smile on my face...they were very really cool
they asked 100% of questions from the Annexure.....
one from maharastra laugh at me..saying that you have written one that...in ques that not to asked why less marks in academics.....
i smiled more than him ...telling him that any one is eligible there is no reason behind it to just such ques to make fun of him......he studied well then only he has come i your cllge...
then the right one frm maharastra asked me ok..i M asking why less marks in academics I told starting frm 10th when i WAS i CLASS .I thought it is enough for me...I started thinking o much rather than doing....these things made me to do so.....
WHY MBA......and they also told me to tell about my father who inspired you...

at last they told .....hahhahaha....but I forgot....name of both..

Dude... I was in your group and I'm from a law background... funny how people have their own interpretations of how the GD went... also there were no IIT people... I guess you try too hard to portray yourself as the underdog... there are 2 sides to every story and in this case I guess it has 9 (9 ppl in Group) 😛

A Big Thanks to all the seniors in this forum for helping us in every way!!!
