Its not about the company you work for matters but the quality of work which defines you and your career.I see no reason why there should be any negative effect of working in a small company.Believe me,its good to work in any small company then to work for any coaching centre and others :)
So,there won't be any problem for you during the final Interview,as far as you're able to convince them the nature of your work and your learnings from them.
Best of luck for next year's CAT/XAT.Give your best shot and let these things take care of themselves.Don't bother much about them right now.It could seriously hurt you during your preparation.

Hello frnz,
I currently have around 3 years of experience.
Want to lay my hands on Consulting/Business Analyst Roles.
Could you please suggest me what are the companies that I should go for?
Its very difficult to move to consulting/business analyst role from IT experience.I'm not saying its impossible but then its quite difficult.
You can target top B-Schools if you want to get into any strategic/generalist consulting firm. This would not only increase you knowledge base but would also propel and give your career a new direction.

You've taken a very smart decision :)
The reason I told that you shouldn't join any coaching centre is because many companies don't give due consideration to work-ex in any coaching centre and that could affect you during your MBA.

Hello Puys!!
Came across the right thread at the right time!
Going through the most confusing phase of my life.. Would be an engg graduate in 2 months..screwed CAT this time.. faired decent in IIFT and SNAP .. So feel should give it another chance!
But I am in a dilemma that should I just take a drop and prepare or I should move out of my town, join somewhere and then prepare simultaneously..
I am a COmp Sci engg but have no intentions at all to join an IT firm..
i can try my hands on business analysis or some consultancy firm..
But then I think that those 4-5 months will be the most crucial one to prepare and i'll have to join anew job.so maybe i won't be that focused..
another option is joining some NGO..but i fear that it will change my career path completely...though it will just be part time but it's said that once u enter a field u end up being in the same..Another thing is Teach for India fellowship .. but it's of 2 yrs duration so am dubious whether to go for it or not..I also have option of ICICI fellowship..it's of 15 months..
You guys can see the level of confusion in me!! :banghead:
I would like to seek for your opinion on choosing among--> Drop and appear CAT12/ Go for a job gain an exp of 1-2 yrs/ join NGO "get some real experience" and then go for CAT this year or a year or 2 later????![]()

Hi kanu
Don't confuse urself this much. I dropped an yr after UG for CAT'11. I've got 88.26 wit equal sections and 've finished my interviews wit gud b-skools.. U r rite. Joining a consultation firm 'll be hectic tat u can't conc. on CAT '12. I had a job offer in business analytics but didn't join due to this. First think well why u wanna do an MBA and if u r really interested then drop an year. 1ly then u can put ur whole-hearted efforts. Joining NGO just for making up the drop is nt a gud idea. Work exp... u have told u ain't interested in working in IT. Bus analysis, consulting have 12-13 hrs of work(min). If u think even then u can squeeze in ur CAT plans then go for it. I've thrown light on all ur options. Its u who gotta decide.
All the Best!!!!!!

If u r sure dat u want to go for CAT next year, den this is the right time to focus ur energies on it. Work hard, and hope for the best. About Bank PO, it's not a bad option baut u have to think if it wud hamper ur preparations. Go for it only if u r sure tht u can manage bot bank job dn preps together.

If u r sure that u want a MBA then this is the time wen u shud start working. Ur target shud be to score HUGE in the written tests, nd the gap can den be justified during PI. U have all the best colgs open for u 😃
thanks mate..for the suggestion..but presently i am working as project associate/research associate in IIT KANPUR..so its a type of research work so will it be counted as my work-ex??will i face any probs at interview time..as i am shifting from research work to management work??frankly speaking,i have joined that only because i dont want a 1 year gap i dont have any interest in research field..so should i continue with this job or should i look for other IT/CORPORATE companies????
plzz reply..i am in very confused state..i dont know where to go..but i also dont want to have 1 year gap..

This wrk will surely lead to the question of y u want to shift form research to mgmt, as u said. If u can justify dat, i dnt think there shud b any problem. In fact, this kinda job can act as a differentiator for u from the majority of the people who wud be coming form the IT sector.

thanks for the reply dinesh 😃 , well i really want to get a HUGE score 😁 so it means the gap is considered a negative by almost all b schools ??? i am not talking about top 10 or 15 because i know they take the cream ... but what about top 40 ??
hi...
I have now 1.5 years of experience in IT, the job now i am almost hating to core.
I have written CAT2011(3rd attempt, though the first attempt with serious preparations) and all other exams last year, but none worked out for me.Felt the pain of losing, since i felt i had given some sincere preparations.Everything turned out to be a huge flop..some calls missed out by a lesser margins..
I am completely stressed and the worst part is the fear lingering in me about my future and also how the next attempt of me in exams will turn out to be? 😞
Was just going through this thread....And read some of the posts...
Guys 1/2/3/4 Gap yrs. matters nothing....what matters is how much u are self motivated to achieve ur dreams....Nothing else matters!!!.....
Dont waste ur time thinking about the negative points on ur CV.Rather channelize ur energy in constructive purposes..like what u can do to make ur profile better than the rest of the junta....
And plzzzzzz stop thinking about top 40-50 colleges.Believe me,in INDIA Brand name is what all matters.U/me are not born IN US/Europe that we can get ample chances.NO.....!!!
in india, career path follows Binary rule..either u have a Brand name behind u or u dont.and believe me,if u dont have a brand name here...its gonna be real tough to justify urself.....Those u say that TALENT matters in the end, they themselves are from top B-schools/engineering colleges so its easy for them to impart free ka gyaan.
Dont stop at anything less than IIM's/XL/FMS/MDI//NITIE.....!!!!
U have got one life.live it to the fullest..atleast give it ur best shot man.....
Gap Yrs. means NOTHING .....Yaar agar khud hi demotivate ho jaoge to phir to ho gya.....Stop at nothing....Dar ke aage Jeet hai ...
P.S feel free to groan
Hi.
It is the same case wid me. I did my BBA in 2010(sept) and stood 2nd, from Calcutta Univ. I joined NIIT IFBI, for A diploma in banking operations. At that point of time, they said , :You will be placed in ICICI as an operations officer." Since I was very much interested in Economics and banking, and since I knew Govt jobs takes time to get, I did the PGDBO. After 6months I got placed in ICICI. But what did I discover? I had to travel for around 5 hours daily, it was a sales profile and I was working for peanuts. (Rs 7500, 6670 after deduction). After going thrrough this ordeal for 2.5 months, I quit, coz seriously, it was not helping my cause. Since August I am sitting at home, preparing for Govt exam( yes back to square one). The only good thing that happened was I am now able to see clearly what I want in life, what my passion is. Earlier on, I was deceiving myself, for I wanted to earn high. But anyhow, I dont know how to justify this gap....
Hello,
I think you are doing ur PG diploma from IFBI? My friend, here's an earnest suggestion : keep giving exams for other exams too. They make a lot of promises but end result is not always satisfying. I did the same prog and had to quit the job after 3 months. The reasons: salary was too low, They say its "operations" but make you work like a dog in sales profile, No growth whatsoever. Not at all discouraging you. Just an advice.

U know buddy, sumtyms in lyf, Shit Happens!! So kick away ur fear, ur doubts and ur anxiety...giv it ur all and 2012 is gonna be YOUR season. Trust me, stress and fear will pull u down...think positive...dream of ABC everyday so that even if u miss, u fall in to NITIE, MDI or NM..

All the best :)

Its not about the top 10 or top 40...A gap needs to be explained. Its not a negative if u utilize the gap properly. When they ask u at the interview dat eaht did u do in the gap year, a answer that u were sitting at home preparing for CAT will definitely create a negative impression. But if u are involved in sumthng productive thru dat period, it will give u a big plus duing ur PI..
PS: Its Dhiresh, not Dinesh.
