hi I am a B.E (EnTC). i have 29 months IT exp. SSC: 85%, HSC :80%, B.E: Distinction holder. i want to get into an IIM desperately. targetting CAT 2012. have given CAT before but dint score well enough. I am planning to quit my job (work presently at Wipro) to focus on my MBA studies. i tried balancing my mba prepn with job in 2011, but cdnt focus on studies due to hectic timings. Will this gap of 1 yr be problematic in my MBA admissions? i want to give my very best at CAT. Please guide me.

I would suggest you to not leave your job.It would be better to take leave of 2 months or so before exams siting some problem.I took a break last year cat did not go well got only 96 so no iims.but I had few other calls everyone asked me about this gap,I told them the truth.I don't know how interviewers will take it.I have been waitlisted 900+ in NM and also waitlisted at IMT.waiting for few other results. If you have any other query you can PM me.good luck with season.

Hi dost,
I guess u can easily turn this so called disadvantage into an advantage which very few people can boast of. It depends the way u put it in ur C.V. Do u think everything glossy tht MBA aspirants put in their C.Vs' are worth quoting there in the forst place. The simple reason u can give is tht u were in involved in the family business. Come on, u r aiming for a B School where the word B Stands for Business. what else would a B school want more than a person who has experienced Business first hand ?? It is anyday an advantage over a person who comes from IT Sector with an experience of 3-4 years.
Look at it this way. U did not take up an IT job after ur engineering like the rest of ur batch but chose to get into ur family business. See, u already stand out of the crowd. Infact if possible, i would suggest that u hold on for another 2 years or so and try for Ivy League colleges in the USA or some of the best B Schools in Europe. But if ur not in a situation to take tht step, atleast tailor ur C.V to show ur POD(Point of Difference). I guess Indian B Schools are now broad minded enuf to accept such applications (i know tht atleast the ivy league do). Since, ur dropping out was for a genuine reason i do not see that as a curse but rather as a boon. A boon which if used properly can work in ur favor.
Thanks & All the Best

Hello PG world...

I am final year student of B.tech Computer Science , my brief profile is as folllows.

X : 82.4 [ CBSE]
XII : 82.4 [CBSE]
B.tech : 74.0 [ Upto 7th sem from UPTU ]
Work ex : NIL [ Fresher ]
JOB in hand : Infosys [ Through campus recruitment ]

I want to do MBA from any of the top 20 institutes of PG list of most preferred institutes.I have not wrote CAT before and haven't yet started preparation for the same .

here are some of my queries :

Q1 . In case I join infosys this year and appear for CAT '12 and manage to do fare with the exam then with this sort of profile do I stand any chance of getting calls from renowned institutes of India like IIMs , XLRI , NITIE , FMS , MDI ...??

Q2 . Should i wait for some years to begin my MBA journey in order to obtain some work-ex ..if so then how many years of work ex would suffice ?? Is there anything like that freshers are not preferred over experienced people during placements.?

I am in great dilemma these days unable to figure out what to do in this situation...expecting some .

Hi,

I need some help on what to do now...I have gots calls from a couple of colleges, and I have done my best in the GDPI of those colleges, but I m not sure of anything. I hope and wish that I ll be able to convert the calls.

If not, I have decided to take up CAT again next year. ( Hoping that there will be no need for that ) Currently I am working in an IT company, and as of now, I want to utilize time effectively. I was thinking of joining Toasmasters for public speaking ( as instead of doing nothing, something will be useful). Is that a good idea? Will public speaking help me in the long run

I thought of doing some certifications ( something that will end in maximum of 4 months), but all certifications are related to finance, and I want to pursue my career in marketing.

Please help me

If you are planning to leave your job and then take CAT refrain from taking such a step as CAT is the most unpredictable exam and even if you clear that you would find yourself in an awkward position as you are from IT background in case you convert the calls this season and are satisfied with your efforts in written then you can join them but if you feel that you could perform better then there is always a next time unless you are desperate to do MBA this season and certification wont be a good alternative in your case.
Hope it helps..

I have no plans of quitting my job, as 2 attempts with CAT has taught me the bitter lesson, that CAT is really unpredictable.

I wanted to know, if something can be done in these 4 months to boost my profile...

In that case anything that adds to your profile would be an asset for you by certification you could handle your inclination for MBA in a better way but be ready for grilling questions on this and improving your communication skills would be helpful in any field

What kind of certifications will be useful? Is there some certification, which is possible to complete in 4 months?

i am really confused on this...

from last 3.5 years i am working on my family business but now i am looking for a job and leave the business.....

From last 1 month i am unsucessfull and getting all call center jobs.....

Recently got to know that no b school gonna take my 3.5 years as a work ex because our company is not registered in stock market....

So since now i have a gap of 3.5 years should i sit at home and prepare for CAT....because even if i get a job these 6 month wont make a impression any way......

what to do puys please help me out....i am a bcom grad

Sir i have a query.
Given the present selection criteria of IIMs wat are my chances to get into any iim with the scores i secured
10th-94
12th-78
grad-85...
And apart from IIMs wat are the collgs which look fr strong academic background???
plzzz reply

hii friends i just want to ask u how much our 10 and 12 marks matter for admission to a top b school. I got 58 percent in 10 and 60 percent in 12 and 70 percent in bba.So what should i do now? ,should i forget dreaming of getting adimssion to a top b school.

You might not be able to make it to few top IIMs because of the acadeic record, but there are other top B-Schools where you can make it if you score decently in written exams.

So, suggest not to take load because of past acads and concentrate on preparation so that you can score high and fetch the calls.

Pretty strong chances of getting calls from IIMs if you score well. 😃

Also, apart from colleges like SPJain whic consider overall profile , you have strong chances of getting calls from other top B-Schools. 😃
