HI,
I had completed my graduation in 2006 and joined my job in May 2007. I quit my IT job(I worked as a Software Developer and Tester in a top MNC) in June 2011 to prepare for MBA Entrance Exams. I wanted to pursue a full time MBA as I wanted to shift my career from IT to Finance. I got calls from 3 colleges for GD/PI round. The 3 facts as mentioned by me below was not treated well by the interview panelists and the colleges that I applied for:

1. There was going to be a six year gap if I was going to join my MBA Degree now( as I had passed my BTech in 2006)aacdemic

2. I had 4 + years of Work-Ex whereas most of the other people applying had work-ex of 3 years of lesser

3. Though I had won awards in my Work and even had good achievements in Extracurricular activities during my academic career and worklife, my academic marks were poor. ie. 60, 48 and 60 in 10th, 12th and BTech.

4. I had a shit of a job where I used to work more than minimum 12 hours everyday and hence had to quit the job to prepare for MBA. But that did not go down well with the panelists though i gave very different positive answers.

Now I am in a fix and donot know what to do:

1. Shall I go back to my job and prepare for MBA again next year?

2. Shall I prepare for MBA next year and enroll in NGOs and a course in Finance to strengthen my profile?

3. Shall i leave hopes and dreams of pursuing a 2 year MBA in India and try to pursue a MBA in ISB or abroad.

4. If abroad, then what type of MBA Programs can I pursue as my total budget is not more than 20-25 lacs(including academic fees and personal expenses if it's abroad and covered by a loan. I can afford ISB as it is in India.)

5. What alternate jobs can i work on to improve my profile?

6. Please advise on how can I strengthen my profile as BSchools are treating my shortage in academic marks as a cardinal and unforgivable sin.

Please advise me as I have taken a great risk and performed a sacrifice by quiting my job for a MBA and donot want to quit midway.

***sorry for such a long query, but had to write it to explain things clearly***

yes an important point if someone can guide me..how to get enrolled in a NGO??

Hello,

I was just wondering how bad it would look on me, if I take a two months break from my career? I am currently 24 (soon to be 25) and have 22 months of work ex.

I plan to travel during those two months; however as it is, I am scared to take a massive decision like this. I am working in a MNC currently, and it's really taxing my brain every time I think about my travel plans, leaving my job.

Primary concerns are:

a) Leaving comfort zone and venturing out purely for my pleasure and no motivation for working in NGO/Volunteering activities. In other words, it's going to be a heavy-duty travel only!

b) After coming back, how do you think employers are going to view me? Would I face some major challenge in getting employed again? (Since I would be using time, not for something which is seen "productive" by 99% of career oriented mindset). After two months of travel, obviously it would take few more days to appear for interviews and hunt for a job. So overall, I am expecting at least 3-4 months gap in my resume!

Kindly pour all your suggestions! (Anyways, my dad would get a heart-attack if I ask him this q! 😐 )

You need not quit your job for this. Many MNCs allow taking a few months off on unpaid leave as a sabbatical. Ask if your company has that policy. Avail of it if it is there.

A 2-4 month gap taken for travel is not a problem. However, it should not lengthen into an unemployment gap.

Grondmaster

Dear People I appreciate the fact that a lot of you are looking to work for NGO but please don't randomly join NGOs just for the heck of it. You may do more harm to the place than help if you go there with the wrong mindset.

Look at life in more ways than a CV point.

I don't mean to demoralize any of you, just reorient you given some of the questions on the thread seem a little too vague and directionless.

Remember a very fast ship without rudder never goes anywhere.

Best of luck.

The good part about being in a start-up is that a lot of roles are majorly cross-functional.

Remember the pitfalls of being in a start-up
1) Salary shall be less
2) Work shall be more
3) You will actually do work and probably can never slack around
4) The company itself might not exist in 6 months time

So are you ready for a challenge like that? If yes, you can ofcourse join a start-up but then your core skills will be something that they would be interested in - you should have some kind of set agenda as to what kind of start-up you want to join...if you join an ecommerce start-up given you background...you will be probably given a developer's role too...may be you can shift within the company later...

or if you start out completely into a non-tech zone then you will have to start form the very bottom...and the nature of what that very bottom is will absolutely depend on the company that u decide to go into.

But it is one of the most enriching experiences of once's life to be a part of a start-up. and people with such a flair shouldn't atleast try and experience it once. No other job makes you learn so much in so little time.

Thanks for your prompt reply.I am ready for all the challenges as I really want to learn.I am keen to join an ecommerce startUp.But do I approach them?

Hi all,
I did My grads in 2010, in BBA( Finance) and then joined IFBI for a PG diplma in banking. They had promised to give a job in ICICI in operations. After completion They placed me in ICICI salt lake but what I discovered was it was a hardcore sales job requiring me to sale atleast 2 Accounts and one other product everyday.I left the job after 3months as The profile of the job, Plus distance of the work place from my house topped up with no prospect of development frustrated me like anything.(I saw ppl working there for last 5 years and drawing merely 25-26k and running from pillar to post for sales.)nyws,IFBI did not give me any certificate of the PG diploma. So I have a 1.5 year gap, from the date of graduation till today. How should I explain my situation to the interview board?( I got calls from few govt banks) PLS PLS PLS PUYS help me out.!!!!

Tell them the truth and tell them that you quit because u want to use your experience of learning at IFBI, which u couldn't do at ur stint in ICICI. Now when u r at the interview u must have faired well in their exams, so tell them that u r more inclined towards consumer banking rather than sales. And if u get recruited, its good.If u don't, its better coz they will discard u only becoz they must be needing some1 for sales!!!!

I've read a few stories and must I say - we're all in the same boat. When I was in college, I was hailed as the next best thing - at college, among my family and friends. My boss a CA, encouraged me to take up the course. I was excited about it - both studying and working. But I could not clear the exam. I then took time off to concentrate on the exam in Jan 2011, but I still could not pass. Finally, at the advice of my family, I had to give up. I have been looking for a job in finance for the past ten months and I have not been able to find something concrete yet - partly, because of this economy and partly, because I don't have an MBA or a CA .

At the cost of sounding too negative, must I take the plunge and apply to good Bschools (The IIMs would be a dream come true)? I mean I have quality work-ex (4 years), and pretty good academics. But I'm hesitant to apply because of the gaps in my CV (I have 2 more because of family reasons). I realise the CA course is tough and not many people pass it; will Bschools view me positively in spite of these gaps? Please tell me the truth - however harsh it is.

Friend,
Life is all harsh.Whatever be ur dream, take a plunge into it. I have seen people who were once back loggers in my college but are now into IIMs(Genaral 1s). Whatever be the gaps in ur CV, if u can explain that to the interviewer, u r through. Remember that speaking ability is all you need to get admitted to IIMs(fater a good score), whatever be ur shortcoming!!!
btw..I am also in the same boat with you(looking to make a shift to finance jobs being an engineer)...I also tried my luck with CAT twice but destiny has something better for me.
(1 of my group mates from college is 1 like you with 1 year gap and now into IIM C).
