: A number/the number:  if 'The' or possessive adjectives (Your, Our or Their) are used before 'Number', then verb is always considered singular, because in that condition 'Number' doesn't represent 'Indefinite Number'; For example;

1) The number of potential cricketers born varies from age to age.

2) The number of persons interested in philosophy is always small.

In that way, there is a lot of difference between ''the number" and "a number". 'Singular verb' is used with 'The Number' and 'Plural Verb' is used with 'A Number' because 'A number' represents many, for example;

1) A number of girls have come.                              ========   Many Girls.

2) The number of girls in the army is increasing.  ========   'Number' of Girls.

The structure of some sentences is Singular Collective Noun + of + Plural Noun

Consider below sentences:

1) A team of students has been selected.

2) A set of books has been bought.

In above sentences, use of singular verb (has) is correct because 'A team of'/'A set of', is collective and represents unity and represent single object. Below are few collective nouns:

A set of, a garland of, a bouquet of, a series of, a team of, a bunch of, a class of, a flock of, a herd of, a band of, a galaxy of, a batch of, a group of;

Below are a few more sentence based on above rule,

1) A set of pens has been purchased.

2) A team of singers has been selected.

3) A bunch of key is lying there.

These above sentences are correct, use of 'plural verb' would have been wrong here.

Rule : Difficulty in the use of collective noun.

When the subject of a sentence is collective noun, and after 'of' there is no 'plural noun', there is always difficulty in using Verb, because we cannot consider it as singular/plural, for example; Government, Staff, Board, Committee, Company. The solution of this universal problem is, you can consider it as singular/plural as per your wish and keep doing it till the end of sentence, see the below sentences;

1) The Government has decided so in its own interest.

2) The Government have decided so in their own interest.

Above, in the first sentence, singular verb and singular pronoun are used considering 'Government' as singular. In the second sentence, plural verb and plural pronoun are used considering 'Government' as plural. Hence, both the sentences are correct.

Below mentioned both sentences are incorrect due to incorrect use of 'Rule '

1) The Government has decided so in their own interest.

2) The Government have decided so in its own interest.

Antecedent Rule

If the subject is a 'Relative pronoun (who, which, that)', then the verb is used according to its 'Antecedent'. Antecedent is the Noun/Pronoun that comes before the 'Relative Pronoun', e,g.,

1) The man who is here is not good.

2) The men who are here are not good.

Here the subject is 'Who' in both the sentences, but Antecedent in first sentence is 'Singular Noun (who)' and in second sentence it is 'Plural Noun (men)'. That is why, in first sentence, singular verb has been used and in second sentence plural verb has been used. See below few more examples that are correct and analyse them.

1) I am the man who has killed him.

2) It is I who have helped Rahul.

3) The pen that is here is not mine.

4) The pens that are here are mine.

NOTE OF CAUTION: One of + Plural noun/pronoun + who/which/that

When 'One of' is used in a sentence, then the Noun/Pronoun that comes after  'of' is considered 'Antecedent' and 'Verb' is used according to, for example;

1) She is one of those who do not accept this view.

Here the antecedent of who is those (not 'one'), hence plural verb 'do' is used for 'those'.

See below, few more sentences that are incorrect based on this mistake

1) This is one of the first difficulties that faces us in the library.

2) It was one of the things that was worrying me.

3) I am not one of the desk-pounding types that likes to stick out his jaws

All these three sentences are incorrect, Plural verbs (face, were, like) had to be used here.

If everyone gets marks for a wrong question..then how does it matter? Why are ppl worried about wrong questions once the exam is over! Though its really sad that those who attempt these have some of their time wasted.

But how does it matter after exam?

And why do ppl send representations for wrong ones?

I could not understand. Any bodhisattva here. Please! Enlighten.
